The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>Lars Horntveth - Kaleidoscopic
>Contemporary Classical, Electronic

Expected some Classical vs. bleeps fuckery here... and I kinda got that?
This is like a one-up of the two Moog synth albums I've heard, and is essentially a soundtrack for a non-existent short film.

After a very space-age like opener, the orchestra slowly plods through a(n asteroid) field, soars through a nebula, watches the birth of a star, and seems to find extraterrestrial life-- all within the first 10 minutes of music. Sounds a lot like a Pixar movie... which is where is why it doesn't sit perfectly with me, since it does feel a bit TOO much like stock music at times.

Still worth a listen, especially if you like music that tells a story. Or contemporary classical work in general.

7/10

>Sweet Trip - You Will Never Know Why
>Shoegaze, Dream Pop

So where exactly do Sweet Trip go after their previous hit? Traditional dream pop, mostly. Cooper's vocals are still airy and youthful, while Burgos carries the melodies often, which are notably more catchy in this album. Acting, Air Supply, Milk, and Misfortunes are Cruel were what popped out at me the most. The appearance of synthetic beeps is toned down to accompany the dueling vocals, swirling comfortably within the band. It even serves to close the album as jubilant techno.

Perfectly understandable for them to take this path after how dense V:C:D was. As consistent as they are with their tracks, the dream pop albums side by side do grow weary, but enough to make me hate it. Makes for only an OK record, though.

Quick review of the new Junkoo)) record.

Starts off with crowd noise and the appearance of Junko's off the hook vocals out of nowhere is probably the best thing about the record.

Still, the expression and the power of her voice is admirable, the record is pretty short. Wish it had more variety. When is she going to play around with effects and her voice a bit more than she already did?

>Fishmans - Orange

This is a clear step in the right direction. Their songs have become more layered and fleshed out, consistently hitting the five minute mark. Their songs are original and seem to have their own unique identity instead of sounding like an awkward appropriation of genre conventions with occasional dub flavoring. I don’t think I’ve heard an album exactly like it. This fusion of dub, funk, and rock simply sounds cheesy coming from other bands. This was the first record of theirs -- of the ones on this chart -- that I enjoyed quite thoroughly. There were few real weak points. They drift into some corny over-emotional pop territory on My Life for example, but it’s reigned in quick and basically it’s just Shinji’s overdoing the vocal performance that hurt it. They play very much to their strengths on this record, with their ability to craft really upbeat, catchy, and happy songs. I feel like this record is really hard to dislike on that quality alone, unless you just have it out for pop music. Also, the mixing and mastering took a huge step up on this record. It sounds incredibly lush and those digital organ tones on the keyboard fucking kill it. Rhythmically too, every song has a distinct, infectious beat, as opposed to cut and paste dub rhythm. I would recommend that people start with this album as an entry point into their discog if they already listened to Long Season or don’t want to start out with something so heavy.

>Fishmans - Kuchu Camp

I don’t think this consistently hits the same highs as Orange, but it’s a solid record nonetheless. It meanders at times, especially the first half, though occasionally it does pay off. Fishmans is a band that excels at crafting initially unassuming songs that hit hard emotionally out of nowhere. The best example of this and the standout track on this album is Night Cruising. It’s a layered and surprisingly experimental track centered on a simple, melancholy guitar riff. It’s joined by a simple downtempo drum and bass beat. Then they keep on adding layers and layers of rhythm and some really touching piano flourishes. As the song progresses they add streams of guitar noise and what sounds like radio interference. It all flows and fits together so well and feels like the title implies, a melancholy drive at night. The combination of the background guitar noise squalls, the piano melody, and the surface noise of a record playing just hits me so hard. You can really hear the seeds of Long Season here. I predict that this song will destroy me on the live album. Other than me gushing about Night Cruising, there are some other great cuts on this album, like the closer, again hitting that emotional core with the voice sample, the whistling, and the melodica.
>>

> Orange > Kuchu Camp
Slightly edgy but I think I'd actually agree. Orange is really underrated.

btw if you have a positive opinion on 98.12.28 maybe don't post it unless you want yamir and jangle to throw a tantrum. Or do because it'd be funny.

>I predict that this song will destroy me on the live album.
Believe me it will. I think it's my most listened to fishmans song by far.

I think Baby Blue is a bit unsung for Fishmans, but I totally agree that the latter half of Kuchuu is the better half. Nice Choice and 新しい人 are both fantastic pop songs.
>>
>>72390761
I'm not sure where I'd rank it, but probably top 3 for me. The most memorable riff to me is the one on MELODY. As basic as it is, it's so infectious.

>>72390847
Honestly, I could see Orange going up in the future. It's the album I've been revisiting the most. I think I just really like super well done pop music. I honestly don't know why Kuchu Camp is more popular. And though I didn't mention Baby Blue it's actually my second favorite track on the album. Not sure why I didn't mention it, but I guess I was focusing on the second half of the album.

Yes. I'm a fan of Nara Leão's work. (Dez Anos Depois is a favorite)

Getz/Gilberto is an unholy fusion of boredom. It's elevator music for elevators that don't work. Etc. Etc. I think Getz' solos are some of his weakest and bossa nova is, yeah, actually among my least fav genres and I only like Nara because she stands out from what I've listened to.

This is giving me really cool first impressions after a listen.

Jazz with violin, accordion, trumpet and bass. Often somber but varied with some happier quirkier moments, just avant enough without being difficult listening and all throughout with a very strong european atmosphere at times sounding more like gypsy jazz. Great melodies all around too.

Really enjoying it strongly recc'd to anyone who thinks the description sounds cool.

Major imporvement from Debut, however there were a few traces of the issues I had with Debut in here. However, this whole thing sounds a lot more mature, better production, vocals, and lyrics. Highlights are "Hyperballed" and "It's Oh So Quiet" (didn't think i'd ever use sexy as an adjective to describe a song). Still though, this album was just alright.

Check out Riley's Reed Streams if you haven't, it often gets overlooked. Other than that I've only heard In C, Rainbow in Curved Air and Persian Surgery Dervishes. I recommend them all.

I haven't really decided for sure how I'm going to structure it, but it's going to be mostly focused on pre-80's development. I'll definitely have some post-minimalism and minimalism inspired 21st century picks, but I don't want to end up with a 1600 album long chart full of shit because I added everything that was slightly minimalist. My Bloody Valentine - You Made Me Realize
It took me a long time for Loveless to click. When I first heard it, I was honestly really bored and didn't get the appeal. Listening to this EP was the exact opposite. From the moment I turned it on, I fell in love with the sound. I loved the noisier, raw, and lo-fi sound to this EP, and I think I like it more than I like Loveless itself. I loved every single song on here, and I was surprised about it too. I totally thought it would just be more songs like the ones that were on Loveless, which I would have obviously been ok with. Looks like I have to check out Isn't Anything ASAP now.
4.0

Jim O'Rourke - Halfway to a Threeway
hehe.. its a collection of B-sides from Eureka. No way in hell I wouldn't enjoy this. Jim does his things on all of these tracks, and I don't deny he did them well. I still loved this EP as much as I expected to, and I'll definitely be listening to it lots. But I don't think this was as good as Eureka. It was just a few more songs that didn't make the final cut. Nevertheless, I still very much enjoyed.

Holy shit, this is like the first time I've ever seen someone agree with me on this. I dig Loveless a lot don't get me wrong - I just really love this EP. Like you said, the punk/lo-fi influence is just terrific. Isn't Anything is pretty close in quality, I'd definitely recommend checking it out.

i'm really glad that i've conditioned myself to not wanting to kill myself while listening to albums over an hour

Gilberto Gil - Gilberto Gil (1968)
>tropicália

A cool, very earthy take on tropicália. Gil couldn't be more far removed from his contempories if he tried, even with Os Mutantes as his backing band. Os Mutantes mostly abandon their psychedelic sound and play a sound much more rooted in traditional Brazillian music than anything else, and this fits Gil's vocals and lyrics more than any pop band could. There is some pop here, and these pure pop tracks are generally the weakest, but they're balanced out wonderfully by the folky tracks, and the whole album culminates in the exceptional "Domingo no parque", one of the finest songs the genre has to offer.

This was definitely better than Debut. There were some more interesting songs and concepts here. But holy shit, for 46 minutes, this felt like an hour to me for some reason. It just kept dragging on. When Bjork does it right, she does it so right, like on It's Oh So Quiet. But when she's not doing it right, it just kinda drags for me. Still, better than Debut.

this reminded me quite a bit of some of the dark ambient artists I really enjoy, but when it comes to unsettling ambiance, I really like a synthetic atmosphere as opposed to a more organic one, as is presented on this album. sadly, while it was definitely unsettling, I don't remember much about the music aside from how it made me feel, which was anxious as hell. however, the sobbing on tracks 5 and 6 had me frozen at my computer; that was pretty neat.

Woolite goes on a jazz binge or 4.0 - the chart.

Jimmy Smith - The Sermon
>Soul Jazz

There’s something so unique about jazz organ man. I’ve only heard a handful of albums in this niche category but man they’re terrific. Hearing an instrument like the organ whirling in the background of a funk song is one thing, but having it front and center is just majestic. On average, these tracks seem to be the mellower cuts from the House Party sessions. They still have quite a bit of energy but they don’t quite reach the same level. The whole thing kicks off with the 20 minute s/t epic, with Smith trading off with Lou Donaldson, Tina Brooks and Kenny Burrell. It has that passionate feel that’s on most soul jazz records but it isn’t quite as upbeat or fiery. The whole thing kicks up a notch when Lee Morgan joins on side 2 though, he gives the band a lot of energy.

Anyway, awesome stuff.

4/5

Miles Davis - ESP
>Post-Bop, Modal Jazz

This is the first album released by Davis’ second great quartet and it’s a definite shift in style. Basically all the tracks have that weird modal/post-bop style where they sound pretty catchy and engaging but still have a slightly off-kilter feel. It’s like the tracks are on the brink of falling apart but each soloist pulls the song back to focus, only for the next member to go ahead and do the same. I’m not sure how else to describe it or how Miles himself composed in this style but it’s super fascinating. I used to think it was a bit frustrating, as I’d rather see him completely dive into something avant-garde but it’s a style that’s growing on me a lot. Hancock’s addition, “Little One” is a great example and shows what Herbie was doing on his own with Maiden Voyage and Empyrean Isles. And “Agitation” is just fantastic.

Anyway, really cool stuff, maybe more intriguing than it is entertaining though. I’m gonna have to revisit Nefertiti now.

Rev. Louis Overstreet - An Evening With Rev. Louis Overstreet: His Guitar, His Four Sons, and the Congregation of St. Luke Powerhouse Church of God in Christ
>Gospel, Rock n' Roll

That's quite a title!

This release makes up for what it lacks in any sort of conventional musical talent with pure God-driven passion and energy. Everyone here puts their all into it, even if they don't exactly know what they're doing. The Reverend sings with all the gospel charisma he can muster while the rest of his band clumsily jams along to the rhythm of chants, claps, cheers and stomps from the audience. I really can't overstate how fun this is, I'm surprised it has so little attention outside of being RYM and Tortscore.

This totally kicks ass, 4/5

v/a - Myзыкa ceвepнoгo cияния (Music of Northern Lights)
>Samoyedic Traditional Music

This is more of a museum piece than anything unfortunately; the actual musical content is a bit lacking, focusing more on capturing local folk stories in a half-sung manner. Some of the tracks documenting weird local instruments are neat but ultimately you probably won't get much out of this unless you have a hampus-tier hard-on for /trad/. I do appreciate its existence of course, given that many of the cultures documented are dying out (the Soviet Union is predominately responsible for that, and this is a Melodiya release...).

3/5

Hank Mobley - No Room for Squares
>Hard Bop

Oh boy, I hate getting coerced into reviewing jazz because I am especially terrible at it. I haven't listened to much jazz unfortunately, so I haven't listened to as much Hard Bop as most of /daily/'s jazz fans have, so I don't have much of a reference point to go off of here. I think the piano and trumpet were my favorite parts here. I think I preferred the second side over the first side slightly.

Look at Mobley on the cover though, try telling me he's not cool.

Гyнeш [Gunesh] - Bижy Зeмлю
>Jazz Fusion, Avant-Prog

What a mess. Not an uncontrolled mess, but a mess regardless. I am not quite sure why every minor Soviet territory had its own jazzy avant-prog band, but they did, and Gunesh was the one of the Turkmen SSR (which, oddly, was easier on independent artists than the following Turkmenistan, which is basically North Korea run by a EDM producing dentist in the desert). This album - their second, more famous album - has been a long time favorite of fans of international prog pretty much exclusively, which is why you only see glowing reviews of it across the board.

The concept of making some prog rooted in Turkmen tradition instead of the Western canon is interesting, but as I said, it comes together more like a mess of half baked ideas. The actual jazz part of this noticeably lacking; if it was just some weird Turkmen prog rock it would have been a much better listen. As it stands, this is more of a historical curiosity for prog nerds than anything. Rishad was definitely a talented guy, but I would have preferred if he stayed closer to the Turkmen aspect. Still worth hearing I think, if only to experience the weirdness.

Hell yeah, great past couple of days. Some new favorites here:

>Otis G. Johnson - Everything - God is Love '78
Probably one of the most unique albums I've heard to date. Definitely not for everyone, but a minimal synth x gospel album off the bat already seems really intriguing to me. It's so skeletal and simple, yet so attractive and enjoyable. Not every track is perfect, the second half is a bit lackluster (probably because a lot of the magic is lost over the first half) but regardless, I would rec this to everyone, even if you don't think minimal synth sounds like your shit.
8

>Gachet - Elite Sounds
Edgy opinion of the day is that I enjoyed this slightly more than Jungle Spliff. In fact, those two mark the only two jungle-related outputs I've really dug to any extent. I think the mixing in general is great, and the energy is unmatched. Production values on the individual tracks are more rusty and not as clean as the more modern stuff I've heard, but that probably contributed to my enjoyment of it quite a bit.
8

>ၼၢင်းၼၢင်း - လိူၵ်ႈသဵင်ၵႂၢမ်း
Nang Nang makes another great, sort of unnecessary release. This is what makes it hard about reviewing this band. There's so little info about them on the Internet that I want to say "They copied so many elements (and, like, entire songs) from their first release in 1978" but DID this album come out after this one? I guess I just assumed so, but in reality I can't find when the hell this came out. Nor any people associated with it, nor any info really. Just some online rips and some live performances on YT (which, by the way, are much higher quality than their actual music lol ((and also have hundreds of thousands of views?? What???))). I mean, I can find plenty but pretty much zero of it is in English. If anyone else can find more English or translatable info about Nang Nang hit me up because I'm dying to know.

>Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Afrika 70 - Zombie
Though I've really enjoyed the time I've spent with this guy's music, I can't help but feel like all of the high energy is fast-depleted from me when these jams stretch into the 10-minute mark and are exhaustively repetitive. Don't get me wrong, there's some great shit that happens in these worlds that Kuti crafts, I'm just not sure I'd want to live there.
7

>Ali Akbar Khan - The 80 Minute Râga
Exhausting and beautiful, but DYING to be reissued on CD. Songs end abruptly just as a consequence of vinyl's storage ability. The cuts are pretty ruining of an otherwise fantastic experience. Not only that, but even if these songs weren't interrupted, I don't think I really possess the ability to listen to two 40-minute tracks with so little variation with as much intensity as I'd like. It's a bit tiring after a while, but a worthwhile listen nonetheless.
7

>吉村弘 - Green
Literally the most chill album ever made. If you're a fan of the New Age-y production style and looking for something relaxing to just let flow over you, this is perfect for you. Especially if you don't mind the fact that either side begins with pretty much the only truly worthwhile track on the beginning of either side, and as each side of the disc runs out, so do the ideas.
6

>emamouse - plant spiral bio bombing
Denpa is track 110% of the time but I actually didn't hate this? It's so hard for me to describe, but even though the vocals are fucking awful, the really spastic, bright, consistently changing and cheery instrumentation was really gripping. Probably not something I'd dig for more of, but decent nonetheless.

>平沢進 - 救済の技法
Something I think a lot of these deeper-level prog/art pop japanese artists I've started to dig into is that there's so much lush, beautiful instrumentation going on in all of their pieces, but rarely do they ever have any semblance of anything in their song to hold on to. Similar artists like Haco, Gesu no Kiwami Otome, and Shiina Ringo (not on every occasion, mind you) have these beautiful soundscapes with little substance in their actual song-writing. They're missing the really simple melodies that artists like Kate Bush, The Beach Boys, and Fishmans are such experts at crafting. The only authentic-feeling melody I could really pull out from underneath the layers of strings and synths was the opening track and "橋大工", my personal favorites. While very beautiful and unique, it doesn't really have much I feel I can hold on to.
5

>Dead Can Dance - Within the Realm of a Dying Sun
There's a lot of interesting stuff here (I particularly enjoyed the first and last tracks). But for the most part it felt overblown, gimmicky, aesthetica without much substance. Super overrated. Just listen to Renaissance music man.
5

>Paris 1942 - s/t
Wtf. Having Sun City Girls collaborate with a original Velvet Underground member shouldn't be allowed to be this bad but it really is. Fuck. Totally bogged-down, purposeless music that gives me no incentive to return to it at all. Some catchy stuff in between (I gurantee this would've been like a 2 had it not been post-punk-oriented), but also really shitty.

The Go-Betweens - 16 Lovers Lane (1988)
>jangle pop, indie pop

A further realization that I really don't care for jangle pop at all. It's a nice, affable pop record that has a penchant for the unmemorable and a very clean, sickeningly sweet sound. It's very '80s production wise, the drum sound is particularly terrible, but the whole album just has a sheen on it that makes even the nicest pop songs seem bland, and this album gets hit hard with it. The acoustic instrumentation is a nice touch, and it's certainly got some pretty jangly guitar work, but music really can't get much blander.

2.0+

The Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat (2004)
>progressive pop, art pop

76 minutes of spastic, off-the-wall, incredibly fun pop music. This is the definition of throwing a bunch of shit at the wall and seeing what sticks, and since the album is a bit absurdly long a lot doesn't stick, but what sticks makes up one of the most memorable, unique pop albums I've ever heard. The dueling vocals of Matthew and Elanor Friedberger are absurdly compelling, and the instrumentation is fantastically varied. It switches between pristine pop sounds to scuzzy blues-esque rock without skipping a beat. Not for everyone, and with a lot of flaws, but one of the more gripping listens I've heard recently.

3.0-

Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band - Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band (1976)
>disco

Disco with big band elements and a shit load of camp. I can't say I like much disco that's not electronic, but this is fun. Not great, by any means, but a fun listen that tends to repeat itself a lot.

which songs on Blueberry Boat would you describe as "pop" exactly? I don't think you could describe more than about 1/3rd of this album as "pop". This is why people go into this album and go "what the fuck, this isn't indie rock???" I mean the songs are in tune... mostly, except when they are frequently and intentionally out of tune. It's got some jumpy guitar like 50s music, but so does, like, Captain Beefheart. The vocals are catchy, in a showtunes kinda way, but is all music with catchy vocals automatically pop music? There are about 3 or 4 songs with choruses on the whole thing. Maybe if your reference points for pop music end some time in the mid 70s and by pop music you actually mean AOR, there are some influences from that, but man it'd be weird even in that context, like Forever Changes meets The Crazy World of Arthur Brown.

I think the beauty of Fela is that his music is that exhaustive repetition though. He kind of lulls you into thinking nothing is going to happen and springs these little ideas at you throughout. It's this weird combination of hypnotic and energetic that I didn't think could possibly work that well.

I'm also a huge sucker for anything remotely funk-influenced so that's probably it.

Yeah, all it really told was that it was a person and not a band. You could also try this: http://shanviews.com/?p=68

All I can really do is assume, but per the Cambodia doc I watched, most of the SEA countries in the area had a fairly small independent scene that remains consistently popular because most of them went to hell later. Cambodia and Thailand were really the only one that had a HUGE scene though, I think Burma and Laos were practically nonexistent.

If you'd want to find more, you'd probably have the best luck going on /asean/ on /int/ and hoping a Burmese person shows up and is willing to tell you what it says (Burmese isn't exactly an in-demand language, so I doubt we'll see any online translators become useful). Be forewarned though, it's predominately Muslim weebs.

Nothing but good things to say about this. A female vocal performance that is fragile and timeless. The minimal accompaniment of violin and piano turns every single track into a lament, overpowered with passion.

Interesting historical recording. The restoration might not be the greatest thing ever, but it is definitely worth a listen.

Here is some interesting background on the performer if anyone is interested

This is very nice, thank you. Given that Armenian history is basically a series of tragedies, it is no surprise that much of their culture is so profoundly sad.

I'd say the whole album is pop, just incredibly deconstructed and fucked with in a lot of ways. there are hooks and melodies but they're constantly manipulated to sound off, which is where the "progressive" nature of it comes in. I'd consider it based in pop but just done in a very idiosyncratic manner, which is why the album is so cool.

Mind Over Matter might become one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time. Loved it.

Ethy with the sneak cross-map double kill. Lost the round but Co's rec was a'ight and MCR made me want to die so fuck it, my main man Ethy takes the spot.

Garunteed no bamboozles from this point on. 0% incoming bamboozles. No further heck will be had. None at all. Pinky swear. This is a safe space for tournament recs. So safe.

True, they're not that bad. What's your favorite order? For me, it's the McChicken. The best fast food sandwich. I even ask for extra McChicken sauce packets and the staff is so friendly and more than willing to oblige.

One time I asked for McChicken sauce packets and they gave me three. I said, "Wow, three for free!" and the nice friendly McDonald's worker laughed and said, "I'm going to call you 3-for-free!".

Now the staff greets me with "hey it's 3-for-free!" and ALWAYS give me three packets. It's such a fun and cool atmosphere at my local McDonald's restaurant, I go there at least 3 times a week for lunch and a large iced coffee with milk instead of cream, 1-2 times for breakfast on the weekend, and maybe once for dinner when I'm in a rush but want a great meal that is affordable, fast, and can match my daily nutritional needs.

I even dip my fries in McChicken sauce, it's delicious! What a great restaurant.

Frisk Frugt - Den Europaiske Spejlbue
>Freak Folktronica, Modern Classical, Neo-Psychedelia,

Light, bubbly. The first track comes by like a time-lapse of the froth of a pond, before a human hand reaches in to grab it away. The instruments themselves, a sine wave, a few clicking levers and trinkets, a lone old piano plinking away, the album clears itself a space to be itself. Homemade instruments from Frisk Frugt himself are also used amongst the "symphony".

The next track follows with midi instruments awkwardly like Foodman, before a small chorus of voices give the confusion a bit more direction. The Anders Lauge Meldgaard's Danish vocals are clear, but nothing crazy-- the narrator of the story.

Much like Owen Pallett, Frisk Frugt sought to create a fantasy world, but leans more towards a folk tale during the album, thanks to the huge variety of sounds he utilizes. They all seem to lie in the upper ranges, which is what makes the album feel like spectating a microcosm. The deepest it will get with harmonies is when the small string section fills in emptiness behind Anders Lauge Meldgaard's singing.

Fugens Flugt is overcome by a storm of crackling at the end, before a miniature promenade flaunts rhythm gymnastics in Solbombe I G; Sol Og Mane is the most traditional of songs, with a marimba, strings, and a female chorus looking out over the countryside. And there's a flexatone, the Best Instrument.

The next two tracks use more strained sounds like a sputtering kazoo and distorted guitar in a few moments of struggle. The well-named Op Op Op Op Op Op Og Omkring climbs until a mountain until it dies and its spirit keeps going, and Solhyldest 2. Del hops along like a musical number.

The final track is 16 minutes of the microcosm falling apart; the light instruments fearfully play their own ditties, a synth repeating a segment comes in, someone begins to riff on a guitar, and once the synths reach their peak it all falls apart like the conductor decided to rip apart the world itself... but it still persists.

Wish I had a lyric sheet for this.

>Terry Riley - Persian Surgery Dervishes
>Minimalism, Electronics

My first live Terry Riley album, but the quality is not affected whatsoever, even being just two electric organs.

Someone made an interesting comment about this being "electronic raga." Raga itself is " a pattern of notes having characteristic intervals, rhythms, and embellishments, used as a basis for improvisation."

So basically: Riley uses one organ to play the backing harmony, and improvised on the other with raga scales, hypnotizing at times, barraging at others. A VERY clever choice in creating a minimalist piece, when you think about it: 5 note scales with patterns, against another droning pattern? my boy we are now Reich but stronger because the amount of times he manages to lock into a groove and confuddle me is bigger than 8

Performance One's second half drops its lumbering walk to loop several several dozen notes at once, shifting into a tenser mood.

Performance Two is much more withdrawn than One in the first half, and explores a single set of notes rather than many different combinations.

It picks up in the second half of Performance Two, and Terry Riley actually plays in a WHOLE OCTAVE ABOVE MORE THAN THE LAST TIME the madman

A solid release. Unfortunately, it gets overshadowed by Eric's album.

Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile
I actually liked some of this but I have three main gripes with it
1. It's too god-damned loud, fuck the loudness wars
2. It's too god-damned long, ffs, say what you want to say in shorter burst, at least half of the songs here could have a minute or more shaved off their runtime
3. I don't much care for the way in which Reznor talks about things like mental illness, seems really cheap, he uses Mental instability and decay et al as an aesthetic that he (quite lazily) borrows from to seem cool and edgy, also this album is fuckin edgy
>inb4 swans does the same thing (they don't)

The Drones - Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By
It's really aussie, got this really ocker meandering drawl to the whole thing, first half is a lot better than the last half, all around a lot of fun,
that said, none of you should listen to it because you'd hate it, all of you, especially jangle

Beck - Odelay
It's whatever, it's like surfing on an oil-spill man, like it's cool for a while, but like, it gets in your crack man... *throws shoe at camera*

Grouper - A I A: Alien Observer
E T H E R E A L
it's also a bit boring sometimes

what m8, have you actually listened to any swans
Swans does not do it, when they talk about things like mental illness it's from a place of sincerity, can't say the same for Reznor, there's a difference between saying "UGH I'M UNRAVELLING AREN'T I COOL" and what Swans are doing, granted, Swans early work is intense in the same way NIN is, but they aren't cloaking themselves in an aesthetic of mental illness to appeal to teenage goths

>God Is My Co-Pilot - I Am Not This Body
Tuneless drivel, and not the good kind either. Little known fact: I don't care for most no wave and this album has very distinct no wave vibes. Basically just a punk album but entirely dissonant, it wants to be fun but I mostly tire of it. 1.5

>Léo Ferré - Il n'y a plus rien
My French isn't good enough to catch what's going on in these poems Ferré is reciting, but I do like the French language aesthetically, so while the content is lost on me, the form is good enough to keep me entertained. The instrumentals are also very nice, somewhat reminiscent of Scott Walker-style baroque pop with those grandiose string sections. If I ever learn French properly I'll hopefully appreciate it even more. 3.0+

>fish vs trip up

>Rufus Wainwright - s/t
This guy's cover of "Hallelujah" (not on this album) was used in Shrek. He's got a great voice, the theatrical excess of this album and his general singing style can be a little overbearing at times, but overall it's just a solid singer/songwriter record. 3.0

>Belong - October Language
A one-trick pony of an album, ambient music that involves feelings of decay yadda yadda, basically Basinski but not shit, or whatever. I do like this record, but it doesn't evoke much within me and therefore is redirected to the list of Nice Background Music, so it's basically Kind of Blue but a little more interesting. 3.0-

I don't think he's being particularly insincere, I think that it's lazy because EVERY song is about mental problems, without actually saying anything new or making any meaningful commentary, if you say something over and over again eventually it becomes a hollow platitude.
you are right about early swans though, I'd hesitate to say that they are posing though, they clearly engage with social issues in that period

(for what it's worth, The Downward Spiral is really dang good)

Terry Riley - Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band 'All Night Flight', Volume 1 (1968)
>Drone, Minimalism

A good mix of minimalism and jazz, something that’s easy to overdo either way due to the opposing ethos of both approaches to music. The horns operate nicely in this path, employing jazzy improvisation while never straying too far from the painfully obvious tonal center for a strong drone effect. The tape manipulation feels a little amateurish at times, especially with the sharp volume changes, but the pieces develop lineralry enough that no bad idea is dwelled on for too long. Despite staying consistently one-tone throughout the performance,, the instrumentation is looped, layered and manipulated constantly, so the pieces are never stagnant for too long. Good drong music can function both as foreground and background music, and this album achieves that well.

But for now, I find it easier to write what I'm imagining and thinking as the album plays, especially because I don't want anyone to think I'm not giving as much attention to their album as their competitor.

Wtf guys, music is good.

Sam Rivers - Streams (1973
>Free Jazz

A ballsy trio, playing loud and exciting free jazz. Rivers has always had a more wild and radical approach than his spiritual contemporaries, which is displayed in full force on this album. The song structures seem to be pushed by how hard Rivers is blowing into the sax at any given moment, with the rhythm section being loosely dragged along. Often, moments on this album border on free improvisation, with rhythm breaks and upsets occuring frequently. Many styles of jazz are explored in these performances; at any given time, you might describe the style as free jazz, bop, improv or even spiritual jazz (especially around the 3/4 point in the first track). The jumping bass lines provided by McBee can be described as groovy and structured fragments, rapidly exhausting ideas and moving on. Norman Connors, who was a frequent collaborator with Pharaoh Sanders at the time, employs a disjointed style of rhythm and percussion that leaves plenty of space for the other two musicians to experiment atop.
The trio setting really allows Rivers full freedom of expression, which he does on many instruments from brass to woodwind and piano, even yelling in fits of passion mid performance a la Mingus.
Perhaps the biggest strength of this performance is that every second is different, so if you’re not digging a certain avenue of exploration, it’s quickly concluded and discarded. Fantastic listen.

8.0 /10

And that's chart! Take a good gander, save it on your desktop, tell me I have good taste etc.

Hey all

Not trying to make a big deal of it, though I'm actually going to be taking a bit of a break from 4chan and the internet in general—or at least using it a lot less (may still drop some reviews time to time). I just feel like I'm wasting so much time, there's better things I can be doing with my life, and I really ought to do them while I can

Seize the day and whatnot

Keep having fun tho, ya'll

This is genuinely one of the best places on the whole world wide web
