The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Assuming I listened to the same album everyone else did, this is a very fun and consistent album. It sounds like it was recorded in the 40s, which gives it an odd nostalgic old film score vibe that made me like it more.

>divine styler - what the fuck
i expected this album to be weird but not THIS weird. the first 3 or so tracks are spoken-word affairs over strangely 80s-tinged half-beats. his lyrics lead me to believe that he's fucking nuts, evidenced further by the two tracks with an actual beat that follow. the production choices are just so OUT there, so wacky, that they left me kind of shook. the guy is a decent rapper but the bars he's spitting are so heady and retarded that i can't exactly "vibe". then there's that one track where he's just screaming about autumns of light. the rest of the album is a guitar solo-infused mess of idealism and "hip hop." while it was wacky, it was only enjoyable because of how wacky it was, and not necessarily because it was "good."

>mob deep - the infamous
shit's dope. the beats are nearly exactly my style, the dark piano lines and boom bap drums are fantastic throughout. the rapping is consistently great, and the lyrics are grounded and realistic.

The more you listen to it, the more you start to realize that it is simultaneously wacky AND good.

Plus, this album came out on Warner Bros. Records. Total madness on a major record label.

Jay Munly - Jimmy Carter Syndrome (2002)
>gothic country

Simpler, less expansive, and more Nick Cave-esque than The Lee Lewis Harlots, all of which are pretty negative characteristics to me. Something about Munly's vocals and lyrics really grates on me here, they're still filled with grit and bravato but the vocals feel a lot less natural and the lyrics are a bit too out there and not in a good way at all. Instrumentally it's a bit too gothic for me, and I know that sounds like a really fucking stupid criticism but 16 Horsepower is really the only band that can pull off this punky gothic country sound off well, so the tracks where Munly owes more to standard alt-country and americana are the best tracks here, and they are pretty great tracks, not gonna lie. He'd definitely improve, but this is a decent album nonetheless.

2.5+

椎名林檎 - 勝訴ストリップ (Shōso Strip) (2000)
>art pop, pop rock

It's sad that even someone as creative and inventive as Sheena can't make J-pop sound distinct at all. Kalk Samen Kuri no Hana is obviously still indebted to j-pop at least a little bit, but this album really embodies that super typical Japanese power pop sound that I don't like at all. The saving grace of the album is the noisy production, it's probably all just brickwalled to hell and back but it makes for a super cool sound and some truly heavy, demolishing moments, which can make even the cheesiest, most generic J-pop song sound cool as hell. And of course, there are some pretty great moments that show off Sheena's talent as a songwriter, but they're just a bit too buried.

Ghédalia Tazartès - Une éclipse totale de soleil (1984)
>electroacoustic, experimental

Not nearlly as sonically interesting as Diasporas. The first track flirts with some cool sound design and some fucking awesome, pounding drum machines, but it slowly devolves into some standard electroacoustic stuff. It's never bad (well, the crying child on the second track is grating), but Tazartès is capable of so much more.

Luciano Cilio - Dialoghi Del Presente

Meant to talk about this yesterday but sleep got in the way. Really beautiful combination of styles. I loved the guitar playing and the layering of the voice in the first part. The more avant-garde percussive improvisation in the second part is the sort of thing that would often put me off, but with the woodwinds over the top it was very effective. Of course the solo piano was beautiful. Finally the interlude really sealed it. That guitar picking was amazing. 8 for now, might go up

Ringo has made some of the best pop music out there, but I totally agree with you. She really does bury a lot of great songwriting under a lot of unneccissary stuff.

AA is really interesting to me. I won't say he's the reason I didn't follow in my family's hardcore Catholic ways (I'd probably give that to Carl Sagan lol), but when I found him when I was a super impressionable tween I really gravitated towards his stuff. Every year I've hated him more and more. By the time I was almost done with high school I fucking hated his stuff.

Good vid btw.

Thoughts on the new DOOM track?:
https://soundcloud.com/metalfacerecords/mad-nice

I think the feature is great, DangerDoom's instrumental is pretty incredible, and DOOM's flow is great as always, but what's with his voice? It sounds...rusty to me for some reason. I don't buy that this is just how his voice is now. After all, on the new Kool Keith song he sounds fine, and same thing with his feature on that Avalanches song from last year. Regardless, I liked it, and I hope DOOM puts out that fucking Ghostface collab already jesus christ.

Holy HECK

I emailed Fantano today asking him what he thought about the thing that Owen Pallett tweeted (here >>72217882 for reference) , wondering what his thoughts were one musicians hating him for his reviews and whatnot. This was his response, saying he'd never even heard of that.

He retweeted the thing Owen Pallett said, changed his name, and is tweeting about it now. I think he's being a bit brash, but to be fair what Pallett said was level 200 retarded.

I hope I didn't become the catalyst for internet/music drama but if I did that would be kind of hilarious.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Let Love In (1994)
>post-punk, alternative rock

Probably my new favorite Cave album barring Skeleton Tree. It's the perfect summation of his post-punk years. It's got the bluesy grit, the gothic soundscaping, the hammy vocals, but everything is tied together in a fuller, more mature package than anything else he'd done prior. There are some really bad, overly synthetic production choices that plague the album, and some of the crazier tracks sound like half-baked thoughtless Tom Waits rip-offs (still not that burnt up on Cave as a songwriter), and I still don't ever think I'll fully get into this man, but I'm a decent fan of this.

2.5+

Interpol - Antics (2004)
>post-punk revival, indie rock

Garbage. I'm not even a huge fan of their debut but it looks incredible compared to this. The bass lines are still pretty good but Banks' vocals are processed to shit, the guitars aren't catchy at all, and every single track just blends together with no rhyme or reason, the whole album is just a gray mass of meh.

Joan Baez - Joan Baez (1960) - Great voice and nice guitar playing. 3.5

Bert Jansch - Moonshine (1973) - Not much to say about this one, it’s just a good folk record, though it gets a bit boring in the end. 3.0

Mississipi John Hurt - Today! (1966) - Great guitar playing, enjoyable voice, warm and uplifting 3.5

The Ganelin Trio - Catalogue: Live in East Germany
This was rad; had some Art Ensemble of Chicago - People in Sorrow vibes with the use of way more instruments than musicians and everyone kind of scuttling around to find what they wanna play, but where that album went for a slow build up this just goes barreling down the tunnel immediately, you can hear the urgency and momentum in each instrument played (as well as the odd moment of catching ones breath) and it presents itself with such immediacy and physicality, you can't help but be enthralled. and fuck me, this is a trio??? amazing. many more listens to come
3.5/5

V/A - Back Roads to Cold Mountain
ehhhh any 'historical document' type collection of music hand is some significance and is always a super interesting listen but this one just had far too little variance. a lot of songs inevitably melded into each other and the stand out tracks were the standards that are kind of impossible to do poorly. but yes of course solid music and interesting musicians

i really have no idea what he's doing anymore.
in one way, it's going the disintegration loops route of slapping a disaster on your bandcamp ambient album to give it artistic merit, but ferraro has made himself such a whirlwind of modern culture whiplashing between every genre he feels like making that this might have just been picked from the same raffle as iphone cameras and yankee candles for album topics. maybe it's a garage rock epic. maybe it's a sincere look at the impact of the boston massacre. maybe it's just about the boston marathon in general. maybe it's a satire of albums like the disintegration loops.
i'm terrified. will listen to it later and report back.

im speedrunning through the rest because I've mostly been dissappointed by these albums anyway

Black Stone Myth Chant - Mane Thecel Phares
>Progressive Electronic, Drone, Spoken Word

Was afraid of another mediocre house album, but it wasn't that at all. Instead, I got guttural, ancient chants, like Egypt put through an electronic filter. The album fails to do anything past that, though, and becomes boring after the initial tracks. Especially because the chanting never changes in tone.

Reminded me of Patten - Ψ. Listen to it only if you liked that album.

5/10

Russell Haswell - As Ssure As Night Follows Day
>Noise, Industrial Techno, Glitch

Experimental viginettes of sound interspersed between compressed techno beats, usually reserved to a few samples per track. Let's Go actually made me feel like my jaw was shivering, while Gas Attack tricks you into following a completely different beat from what it started with. Interlude to increase the frequency of a sample, morphing from sci-fi equipment, to a siren, to soda bubbles, to a scream, to a ring.

This guy is good at raising discomfort, for sure, because it feels like I'm putting my head next to broken speakers during many of the songs. If you like minimal techno and industrial, you might like this.

6/10

J.G. Biberkopf - Ecologies
>Sound Collage, Ambient, Grime

Much like Elysia Crampton and other recent artists who use stock sound effects to play with the mind, 'cept Biberkopf is looser with how much he pumps in. That is, unless it's hard hitting shit like Age of Aquarius. Otherwise, Biberkopf dabbles in that same archaic and unknown corporate world Crampton released music in, in a shorter and more palatable form.

John T. Gast - Excerpts
>Acid Techno, Ambient, "IDM" aka music that sounds like it isn't in 4/4 but actually is

co-producer of Hype Williams makes some techno and slowed down tunes B)

Infection and Congress are actually very dissimilar from the second half of the album, which is more of the grainy and distant music Hype Williams is known for. Claim Your Limbs is the only other progressive techno track in an album of entropic tunes.

6/10

Ron Moreli - A Gathering Together
>Drone, Industrial

A lighter side of industrial, apparently. Actually soothing. Wouldn't agree with the term "Techno" used for it on rym; this is essentially a rough ambient album with crackly samples. There are a few standouts that caught my ear too, like In Secret and Desert Ocean.

Would recommend if you like Autechre, or Noise genre music without the noise.

7/10
Jac Berrocal, David Fenech, Vincent Epplay - Antigravity
>Electroacoustic Improv, Tribal Ambient, Post Punk

uh

its s'alrite

spooky whispers + random trumpet + someone smacking a pot in the beginning

But it also delves into jazz and global -- plus electronic buzzing to accommodate chanting, Jac Berrocal's trumpet, percussion. Post Punk influences come from the whispered french and liberal usage of guitar. Someone on the bandcamp page left a comment describing the album as film Noir jazz, as well. It's an interesting and unlikely blend that manages to work (most of the time), not including some particularly grating synth work that pulls down acoustic performances.

Ty Segall - Emotional Mugger
Not Sure if I care for Ty Segall's stop start instrumentation on Emotional Mugger, it gets really annoying, like yeah it's supposed to be weird and dark but can you not beat the horse until it's a mass of gibblets and viscera on the floor... hopefully the other albums from him are better

Ewa Braun - Stereo
Good and also nice
not perfect but pleasant to listen to all the same

Omni - Deluxe
It's pretty standard Indie rock, doesn't really do anything interesting but it's not offensive all the same

Dialect - Gowanus Drift
>Ambient, Progressive Electronic
Knew I'd like this right after the opener. A nice balance between abrasive and dreamy, like walking through an abandoned industrial area at twilight. Waterfront Epiphany seems to take the sadness of the beginning and burst it with colorful synths, and Wings drifts back into the inhabited part of the city with an old guitar's strums and vibraphone strikes.

From here, the album guides the listener around Dialect's home in Liverpool. Coney Island Fog opens with a saxophone (yeah), before descending into ghostly nostalgic chords, covering radio talk. Flesh In The Pan drifts through a derelict portion of town, before Gowanus hopefully gazes over its inhabitants with plucked strings and breath voice.

Cloud Chorale transitions (with an honestly cheesy chorus) into Ghost of Red Hook, with hints of a dance club in the background. The duet of lonely saxes is humanizing (and groovy) against the somber drones, right before Broken Pipes comes back in with a recollection of sorts. Glass Drift and Bleak Drift echo more sounds you'd expect from dance music against bubbly textures. Chewing Springs offers an awkward smile and sound from an old toy, before the closing track barely manages to say goodbye through its broken down electronics.

It's a twisted kind of beautiful, bending the angelical nature from the Kara Lis Coverdale and LXV album with grubby man-made hands. Definitely think that some people will find connections to their hometown in this album.

For me, it's the McChicken. The best fast food sandwich. I even ask for extra McChicken sauce packets and the staff is so friendly and more than willing to oblige.

One time I asked for McChicken sauce packets and they gave me three. I said, "Wow, three for free!" and the nice friendly McDonald's worker laughed and said, "I'm going to call you 3-for-free!".

Now the staff greets me with "hey it's 3-for-free!" and ALWAYS give me three packets. It's such a fun and cool atmosphere at my local McDonald's restaurant, I go there at least 3 times a week for lunch and a large iced coffee with milk instead of cream, 1-2 times for breakfast on the weekend, and maybe once for dinner when I'm in a rush but want a great meal that is affordable, fast, and can match my daily nutritional needs.

I even dip my fries in McChicken sauce, it's delicious! What a great restaurant.

There's no "conspiracy" friend. For me, and millions of other /daily/ posters, the McChicken really is the best fast food sandwich there is. Great value, excellent quality, and friendly staff are what makes McDonalds so successful and popular.

I'm lovin' it.

The signature McChicken patty is crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, but with a bit of chew...it's not overly soft or watery like the products offered by Burger King. The seasoning is just right, it offers a noticeable pepper flavoring but it is not meant to be spicy, furthermore the McDonald's mayo and shredded salad combination work in perfect harmony to accent all of this along with the perfectly toasted buns, and dare I say it goes best with an order of hot McDonald's french fries

Let's see, for Fishmans, I've heard almost everything from their discography but I'm not that into the first couple ones with more reggae and stong dub influences. My favorite one was their last, Uchuu Nippon Setagaya. They sounded more cohesive, at least for me.

For Kate Bush I've been kind of disappointed with the last two releases, I think. The Dreaming and Hound of Love are so good, though!

Haven't heard anything form XTC, yet!

>arca - arca
this is my first arca release and i was surprised by how much i enjoyed the production. it's theatric in its desire to create an atmosphere and it succeeds most of the time. the vocals were here-and-there, and since they're apparently a new facet of his sound, i'm not sure if he should stick with incorporating them. either way, very pretty and dark.

i filled in my previous ratings too fish

New Arca was aaaaaalright. To be quite honest, I found myself kind of confused at most of the songs on here. They were enjoyable and the electronic timbres were pleasant, but I found the conclusions and progressions of many of the songs rather boring. I actually really dug the dude's voice, I'm just not sure if I thought the vocals and the tunes fused very well in most cases. Piel, Reverie, and Desafío were standout track for me, and most others were either forgettable or just passable. I'm really interested in Arca and hope he continues to experiment like this, but I haven't really enjoyed many of his projects as much as other people have so far.

>I am a Lake of Burning Orchids : Hieromartyrology

Surprisingly less harsh than I was expecting, I got through it pretty easy. I was still bored though, it really felt like loudness for the sake of loudness without any of the textural complexity that I listen to noise music for. It was very pretty at times, but it sounded like an ambient album shoved through sixty distortion filters for most of it's length.
