The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

About my ratings.

A highly complex work is aesthetically worthless without (at least somewhat) commensurate depth; i.e. coherent and meaningful structuring of the material, which is required of all forms of expression to be of any real value. The magnitude of the depth is dependent on the complexity of a work; with zero complexity there can be no material at all, but complexity without depth, that is to say without meaning, is just boring, or even nonsensical (or as in the case of negative depth--material made with the dickless ambition to sound 'challenging', because the composer is a pretentious hipster, and this is how subhumans compete socially with one another--which by all healthy accounts sounds just fucking atrocious).

Listening to 'progressive' (a term which in modern times has come to designate almost its antonym) music that amounts to mere technical demonstration is comparable to reading a thesaurus, which can be relatively instructive, but when these masturbators take themselves so seriously that they elevate their aesthetically useless shred above all other--or actual--artforms, they are more akin to the pseudo-intellectual, spewing meaningless hard-word drivel in order to appear as something they are not. While there undoubtedly is some power in spouting difficult nonsense, it does not make it aesthetically meaningful.

"...every new artistic means that is evolved (instrument, technique, mechanic) expands an artform's possibility space, thereby increasing — not only the potential for a higher, more complicated and more aesthetically pleasing work, but at the same time the potential for a more wretched work than has hitherto been possible." -- Alex Kierkegaard (On the Genealogy of "Art Games": A Polemic*)

>699. 4chan is without a doubt the worst website in the history of the internet. I have never seen such an agglomeration of stupidity and wretchedness anywhere else, nor would have imagined that so much ugliness — mental, and no doubt also physical — could be possible in this world if I had never come across it. And they are all fully aware of this, which is why they prefer to remain anonymous, and almost immediately trash everything that they write, since they know it's rubbish. We are talking about individuals so weak and fearful that even the nicknames used by forum users feel too restrictive and oppressive to them. Individuals so slow and incoherent that they don't want others to be able to connect even as much as two of their posts together and hold them accountable for some measure of logic between them. This is the true bottom of the barrel of (sub)humanity. And that's why I keep an eye on it from time to time. You couldn't even meet such idiots in the street, since people in the street possess at least the minimum amount of strength required to leave their rooms and walk around. So if my site is the greatest site that exists and that will ever be made (and it is), 4chan is the lowest one, and will remain so for as long as it remains the internet's bastion for all those who are attracted by anonymity (which is to say for nobodies).
>And now sit back and watch the torrent of threads confounding anonymity with pseudonymity that will be popping up on there.

>Nobuko Hori - Xtoyourmilkyhair
>Glitch Pop, Sound Collage

Lots of reversed, distorted, choppy, and amped up sampling from all kinds of media, with female samples placed behind the mess. Think Arca, if he were asian and didn't care as much about sample quality. what is it with japanese electronic music artists and their bizarre album composition choices

Mindless warbling and a piercing chime introduces the album in Kulk, and expands on itself in Talk To You-- it's like conversing with a broken automata. GGGGR follows by constructing an actual rhythm backbone that the song notes for maybe a minute.

Sukinan uses a robotic string section to feel a bit more human, somehow. Humummm builds off of the vocals rather than the glitch, and it's one of the more unnerving tracks. ITE is a slight bit of relief as an interlude. Soi is probably the most focused and enjoyable track on the record, cutting the vocals into an actual groove, but sadly lasts only 2 minutes. Dashyou is another snippet that uses the distorted sampling to actually be catchy, but not before a harmonica (ugh) is used on XEXE.

OOO is the longest track on the Xtoyourmilkyhair, and we already hear the singer playing along on a musical toy to begin.

It's a unique product, and much more interesting than your average noise album, but a bit directionless and one-note to rate any higher.

>Royksopp - Melody A.M.
>Downtempo, Ambient

Apparently Moby - Play 's nephew. Not surprising to see why it's rated so high on rym-- it's super accessible for any music listener, and the first few tracks are easy to please with. Royksopp have absolutely no trouble in assembling groovy and catchy tracks; calm vocal features, the firm bass guitar, the timeworn synth textures, the shimmers of piano, and the drums play a huge/hidden role in supporting each track.

Royksopp's Night Out is the funkiest of the tracks on here, and a personal favorite for how winding and deceptively straightforward it is. And that two note orchestra hit that comes in during the chorus: fuckin tasty.

She's So is like watching a city get enveloped by a night sky, and 40 Years Back / Come offers two quiet electronic soliloquies.

The aforementioned tracks are what keeps the album fresh after the catchy pop influences of the first side of the album, using house and funk to mix things up. This most certainly could have been a mediocre album if Royksopp tried to make more radio hits after the first few tracks.

At the end of the album, I can't help thinking that these guys are truly one of the forefathers of at least 40% of all Soundcloud artists. But unlike Moby, it's hard not to like them.

one of these records is a compilation of some amazing psych pop songs, some ok psych pop songs, and some pretty good weird noisy shit.

the other is jarring and lacking melody, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but i just didn't enjoy it at all. I'm pretty sure i understood what they were going for (collagey soulful purposefully weird stuff) but it didn't do anything for me. also i couldn't stand the female vocals.

>Jandek - Dallas Thursday
Holy hell I HATED this. I accept that Jandek is a very interesting, self-made, DIY musician. I like a lot of his stuff and it's amazing how much of a consistent output he has. Stuff like this really turns me off from exploring his catalog though. It's basically 75 minutes of the SAME sort of Jazz improv. However, it feels extremely composed, repetitive, and mind-numbingly same-y. If it weren't for the lyrics, I would really have trouble distinguishing one track from the next. The performances by all musicians are very good, but this shit is too much.

Yeah I liked it as an out-there relase and will definitely try it again. I really like the review on RYM too, really made me think

>i wanted to find out more about Naang Naang so i searched around and i found the guy that found this cassette at a record shop one day and he ripped it and uploaded it to his blog and that's how it emerged on the internet and i find that very obtusely cool. this album is pure joy, like wow. the lo-fi, crackly guitars, the beautiful melodies, godly vocals, it's all just so perfect.

>so what this made me realise. is how hidden the beauties of life are. how hidden certain treasures can be. imagine, this cassette in a box labelled "tapes: $1" amongst some other secondhand tapes that have been played once and thrown in a box. now imagine hundreds of cassettes in this box at a record fair.

>there's hours upon hours of the best music you'll ever hear collecting dust in someone's attic. your potential favourite ever song could be a limited pressing single out there somewhere with a couple scratches piled under thousands of other singles in someone's cupboard, to never be played again. i feel it's something like this -- life's treasures are deep and hidden, yes, but it takes only one person to uncover and share this beauty to bring thousands of smiles.

Ever since I've heard that 78 RPM compilation by Dust-to-Digital from South East Asia, I've really been infatuated with the area. I want to learn decent Burmese and visit Myanmar someday.

The thing is, the Nang Nang live videos on YT have a decent amount of views, so they're obviously popular to some extent on that side of the world:

>attack attack vs infest
this attack attack album /might/ be the worst thing i've ever heard, but i totally understand (from a distance) why transgod likes it.

infest's record was better, but not good. screamy bangy hardcore punk that's just not my style. certainly not minor threat.

nat is revived, trans and nyar are out!

Yer shleepin' on 90-93 my guy. I think you'd really dig early Ween, the first two Mercury Rev albums, Heaven or Las Vegas, the first two "Bare Nuckle" soundtracks, Bone Machine, and Laughing Stock.

Also, sorry I recced so much post-punk lol but I'm biased + it was most of the best stuff released in the 80s.

Really? That's awesome! Do many of the people speak English? What exactly did you visit/see? What you recommend seeing there? SE Asia is a really fascinating area of the world to me just because I really know so little about it.

Johnny Cash - Johnny Cash With His Hot and Blue Guitar! (1957)
>country, rockabilly

A very primitive form of Cash playing some no-frills rockabilly. For an album done by one of the most confident, booming voices in music in a genre that necesitates confidence, this is a shockingly meek little record. The instrumentation is oddly subdued especially when compared to Cash's vocals, and some of the more gospel influenced tracks (background vocals and all) really don't fit well with Cash's voice or personality at all, the tracks with these aspects seem like somewhat cheap, hokey cash-ins. The stuff that Cash is known best for is still here in spades, though, with the trifecta of "The Rock Island Line", "I Walk the Line", and "Folsom Prison Blues" done immaculately. Cash's guitar playing is also in top form here, he has a very unique, bassy style that doesn't rely exclusively on bland chord work, and it makes even the most snooze-worthy tracks worth a listen.

The Mountain Goats - Tallahassee (2002)
>indie folk, singer/songwriter

A big departure from All Hail West Texas, lyrically and musically. Lyrically it's not as direct and much more shrouded in metaphor, waxing poetic about Darnielle's personal life and emotions rather than telling stories. This approach works incredibly well, and this album cements Darnielle as one of the finest lyricists around, managing to blend the bitterly humorous and the bluntly bitter perfectly. Musically I'd say that Darnielle doesn't work that well around lush, full instrumentation. There are some fine melodies here and there, and "No Children" is probably the finest, most satisfyingly passionate song ever put out by the Mountain Goats, but something's lost when these songs aren't shouted out with an acoustic guitar and a four-track.

2.5+

ABBA - Arrival (1976)
>europop

Proof positive that ABBA was very much not an album band. Most of the deep cuts here are thoroughly unmemorable pop tunes or weird flirtations with sleazy euro-rock, and neither of them work well. The singles ("Dancing Queen", "Money Money Money", "Knowing Me Knowing You") are damn fine, of course, but the rest of the album is filler.

2.0+

Kath Bloom / Loren Mazzacane - Restless Faithful Desperate (1983)
>contemporary folk, singer/songwriter

Absolutely stunning. I didn't even know Mazzacane had much of a career outside of his improv works, but here he turns in some of the most beautifully delicate guitar performances I've ever heard, perfectly complimenting the soulful, defeated vocals of Bloom. I've never heard a vocalist/guitarist duo that work this well together, no kidding. The album is admittedly one-note, with very little variation outside of a few bluesy electric riffs, but it's so damned beautiful none of that matters. Recommended to any fans of Sibylle Baier and the like.

>Mark Pritchard - Under the Sun
Apparently Mark Pritchard is a member of Global Communication, but you can't really tell from this album. Like Global Communication, Pritchard's solo stuff is ambient electronic music, but this is just so safe and bland in comparison. Don't get me wrong, it is pleasant, it is diverse (sometimes illogically so - why is there a Linda Perhacs folk song on this album?), but nothing particularly makes me go "I want to listen to this again." Compare it to another ambient album on this chart, October Language. While I wouldn't consider that album great per se, it did have its own sound, its own shtick, something that makes me want to return to it. This album, meanwhile, is 67 minutes of all sorts of things, of which pretty much nothing is especially memorable. Pleasant enough for one listen, but I am not sure if I'd ever revisit it. 2.0

>nirvana - in utero
i never had a nirvana phase when i was young (unless you count slamming breed on repeat for four hours once a week) but outside of nevermind i'd heard bits and pieces from all the albums, eps, demos, etc etc. and it's all been fine. fine. in places kind of try hard, in places kind of kick ass. nevermind as a whole really bugged me. in utero is fine. good even, enjoyable overall. but who cares? it's nirvana. right?
3/5

>hamid drake and bindu - reggaeology
inelegant but passionate coming-together of two genres that would never seem able to work together - the beatboxing is strange but the slow reggae release of the horns and the gentle/hard percussion work i will always be a sucker for. spiritual in an obtuse sense, to drake's own personal 'above-all' deity - 'Kali', god of destruction. spoken word pieces invoke love and chaos over mismatched instrumentals. interesting above all and a sense of personal pride establishes the work as something more than just morbid genre-frankensteining curiousity
3/5

>dropdead - s/t
grindcore/powerviolence is really hit/miss for me and there's such a big ratio of misses to hits. of the bands i can get behind there's bands that i despise and bands that are boring and bands that are functionally good without having anything really interesting or unique about them - that's how I felt here. kind of cool but lacks momentum and manages to drag even though it's under a half hour. samey same but well enough constructed that fiends for this genre would get off to it
2/5

>anomie - discography (94-97)
mostly french lyrics with that sandpaper in yer throat style vocals that hit you in the stomach and pull you in outta desperation - cool bass licks but mostly middle of the road emo instrumentals. some samples (?) don't really work with the overall theme of the album (probably because culled from different eps and singles or whatever) but yeah this was fine

Music is pretty cool guys

Al Green - Gets Next to You
>Southern Soul

By far the funkiest album I’ve heard from Al Green. The bass is bouncier, the rhythms are tighter and there’s less of that smooth stuff going on. Though I love Green’s voice over the skeletal production of Call Me and the smoother Let’s Stay Together. All the tracks are enjoyable, from original to covers. In fact, I think his cover of “Light My Fire” is one of my favorites on the album - or out of his discography. Though, “Tired of Being Alone” is up there as well. Really energetic as far as Green releases go and it’s awesome. This four album stretch might be one of my favorites in music, dude really had something magic going for a few years.

4/5

Wayne Shorter - Adam’s Apple
>Hard Bop

Pretty standard hard bop stuff, with a relatively nice mix of styles. It isn’t as fast paced as much of the movement but it has its moments. Shorter does a great job mixing it up, just as Mobley did on No Room For Squares. Anyway, solid stuff, with Hancock standing out in particular.

3.5

Miles Davis - Sorcerer
>Post-Bop

Man Davis was really good at this style. The whole album feels incredibly anxious, with each soloist puttering and wandering around in that semi-avant-garde style. Hancock in particular is fantastic on the piano and Tony Williams drives all the songs home with some out there drumming. And when Davis comes in on “Masqualero”, it’s like he’s tearing through the fabric of the song, it’s terrific. I feel like I wrote the same exact review for ESP too but man this is similarly fascinating.

Royal Trux - Twin Infinitives
>Experimental Rock

Well, I’m stumped.

This may actually be the weirdest rock album I’ve ever heard, alongside TMR. These guys basically just fuck around and wail, screech and blend all sorts of grating guitar noises. They essentially depart from normal rock structure, roaming around on terrible solos and adding effects to their already grating voices. It’s incredibly dissonant and none of the ideas match up in any way. “(Edge of the) Ape Oven” starts with this tribal drum machine and a mellow piano and then departs into a droney mess of lengthy experimentation. I think that captures what these guys were going for perfectly - every time they get into any sort of musical groove, they go the opposite direction and fuck everything up purposefully. If they had any musical talent, you certainly can’t tell from this album, as it’s the least musically competent album I’ve ever heard. You could’ve put me on guitar during this album and I genuinely would’ve been able to play more harmonious music than these guys.

That being said, I like that concept. It’s dadaist, a lot like TMR or free jazz with the guys just completely abandoning all musical structure for a majority of the record. It’s not quite uncomfortable though, sounding more creepy and unrefined than anything. Either way, it isn’t an enjoyable record in any sense of the word but I admire the complete dedication to musical chaos.

Has to be one of the most fascinating albums I’ve ever listened to because I can’t tell if it’s utterly brilliant or complete and total garbage.

I guess 3/5 but that seems equal parts too generous and too low

Totally agree, and that's why I often have such a hard time reviewing experimental albums. It's challenging to talk about all the weird things that are happening but it feels wrong to completely avoid discussing the music idk

Glad I gave it a listen though
