SCREEEEEEEEEEE SCREEEEEEEEEEEE SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

how does this work what do i do when i can only do vocals and basic acoustic guitar shit (and not even simultaneously lmao)
>>
I won't participate
But I think it would make more sense if people could pick songs from the list first if they want to
That way everyone can do what they are actually able to cover properly
>>

the point is not to cover it "properly"

>>
>>72370990
My reasoning was it should be a comp with recognizable songs. Also a challenge. Ideally they'd be standards so anyone could interpret them, i.e. cover them properly. We're going with the flow now though

Most game I've had in my life lmao. Glad you enjoyed it! I'm hoping to get working on some new stuff this summer, but seeing as I'm starting my bachelor thesis tomorrow I probably won't be cooking up anything anytime soon.
>>
>>72371057
im super rusty at guitar i figure so that'd take enough of an effort but it's probably the best i got, unless i can find an instrumental of a track floating around somewhere/find someone to play the instrumental for me lol

Hello /citypop/, I need some recs. I've listened to Tatsuro Yamashita, Sugar Babe, and Tatsuhiko Yamamoto and it was all pretty good, but Naoya Matsuoka was a whole new level. A Farewell to the Seashore and 夏の旅 are exactly in the style I want them.

Anything more like it?

Bad. There were some songs on here that legitimately irritated me, like the Harder Better Faster Stronger by Daft Punk kind of irritation. I really didn't like the funkier/ dancy production either. The lyrics themselves were pretty unbearable at times too, which wouldn't normally irritate me except for how prominent they were here. She sounded like she either A) Had a very limited English vocabulary B) Was improvised singing while not knowing what to say. Take an example from, in my opinion, the worse song on here, Human Behavior.. "If you ever get close to a human...
And human behavior... Be ready... be ready to get confused." Like was she trying to sound deep or was she improvising I honestly couldn't tell. The only pros on this album was the song "Venus As A Boy", that track was actually good.. other then that though, the tracks were at best tolerable and at worse irritating. Also her voice was hot at times ngl desu.

I still see potential in her, but I don't think I'll like her dancier and funkier stuff if there's any of that in the future. I hope her later albums will be more on the lush side and less on the ""fun"" side.

2/5

girls got some pipes. im familiar enough with bjork that i know her more popular stuff is very electronic, so it was interesting to hear that her roots were in dance and house and the such. that being said, i didnt find much enjoyment in this album either. i liked the first few songs, but i just got more bored as the album went on. i see why this is one of her most popular albums, though.

Nothing is quite as odd as Cukor Bila Smert'; check out their only album (Manirna Muzyka is a collection of various independently released singles/EPs) "Selo" for something more melodic and chamber-ish. These albums all have some aspects of what you might have liked in Manirna Muzyka, though

>Oneohtrix Point Never - Comimssions II
>Progressive Electronic, mixes of D&B and Noise and Ambient

Obviously pulling from "bullet hell" games, it's strange to hear OPN doing this kind of genre, let alone doing it successfully. Bullet Hell Abstraction I doesn't stick to being just a video game soundtrack, but does what its title implies and brings the track in a collagic (but equally heavy) direction. The game's doing something it's not supposed to, but there's a beauty in the way it collapses.

Bullet Hell Abstraction III seems to approach white noise more than the prior track, and walks closer to an actual song structure. The familiar chorus of R+7 appears for a final epiphany before the 18 minute Suite From Magnetic Rose begins.

Definitely one of the better Ambient/Prog. Electronic tracks I have heard. The more-believable choir connects between Lopatin's GoD synth plinks, Replica sampling, and Returnal ambiance.

7/10

>Mort Garson - Mother Earth's Plantasia
>Progressive Electronic, more Moog Synthesizer

super fucking comfy.

Definitely of the same era of synth-only music as Woolite's previous recc, but of original compositions and the polar opposite season. Makes me feel a mixture of bliss and sadness while listening.

I don't really need to explain it any further, honestly.

7.5/10

Woolite just barely edges over with more moog synth fuckery, the mad man

One more round between Eric and Shamepai and it's on to the final 4

Frank Zappa - Absolutely Free
>Experimental Rock, Satire, Doo Wop

I love Freak Out but the follow up doesn’t seem to have the same impact on me. There’s a number of doo wop parodies, little rock tracks, etc. A lot of purposefully flat singing on here. Most of the tracks feel like little jingles, clocking in at about 2 minutes for the most part. The ideas don’t end up feeling fully developed, which I guess is the point - but I wasn’t too fond of it. It’s fantastic to hear Zappa tackle a number of musical styles and his doo wop covers are surprisingly catchy. “Status Back Baby” and “Brown Shoes Don’t Make It” (what the fuck though) are both big standouts but ultimately, this feels too scattered at times. Still enjoyable and legitimately great at times but it didn’t quite blow my mind the same way Freak Out did. Seemed to pick up steam by the end but maybe I just got used to Zappa’s style over the course of the album.

I need to come back to this and reevaluate soon honestly.

3.5/5

Don Cherry - Symphony For Improvisors
>Free Jazz

More bluesy/spiritual free jazz fuckery from early Cherry. There’s two great extended cuts suites on here that are equally engaging. There’s a nice Eastern flair on the album as always, with Cherry blaring into the cornet, someone on vibraphone and Pharoahe Sanders chipping in on sax. It’s about what you’d expect from this guy but it isn’t quite at the same scope as his later material. It’s more approachable and engaging but doesn’t have the same impact as a result.

Not sure how to write about this but yeah it was great.

>>72378618
I think an important thing to "getting" Absolutely Free is that each side is basically one song. They each have a lot of themeing, continuation, and lyrical connections. I would argue this is rock music being crafted like a classical piece, arguably making it one of the first (if not THE first) progressive rock albums ever. Rock albums so meticulous, composed, and cut up didn't really exist at all in this kind of music. On top of all of that, it's just catchy and surprising. Doesn't mean you HAVE to like it, just some reasoning as to why I see it as so great.

And yeah, for fucking 1967 "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" is fucking insane.

>>
>>72378763
Yeah it's definitely one of my favorite images I've found in the last year or so. I'm afraid I don't have the Boris one though :/

Huh I didn't really pick up on that it was basically two different songs. I'll definitely keep that in mind on my next listen and maybe I'll appreciate it a bit more at least. Interesting that you call it the first prog rock albums, I hadn't even thought of that. I'm also a bit out of the loop on prog's history so it wasn't something I had even thought of.

Thanks for all your insight into these Zappa albums btw, you've been super helpful so far
>>
>>72378820
>Antiwarhol was like the third person to rate this in like 2011
of course.

>>72378989
Yeah. Side-A is about vegetables and Side-B is about American Culture/Pageantism, but even though they're basically two different pieces, they relate in a really subtle, cool way.

>I'm also a bit out of the loop on prog's history
Don't feel bad about this. You aren't missing much lol. Zappa was an influential guy to the creation of prog, and arguably one of the firsts to make that kind of music. Looking at his influences on the liner notes of Freak Out, most of them are classical composers rather than rock musicians, which I think is really interesting and telling of his style of creating music.

I'm sorry if I seem annoying and ranty/gushing at all I just know how intimidating his discog can be if you don't know much about his music.

ALSO: Don't feel like you should feel obligated to like a Zappa album more than you do just because I'm sitting behind my keyboard waiting to post a essay that disagrees with you.

Idk, Zappa made cool music and was a pretty inventive guy, but he at times he was a dumb edgelord and let some of it show through in his music, especially in his comedy era.

Steve Lacy - Steve Lacy's Demo (2017)
>hypnagogic pop, alternative R&B, lo-fi indie

As a demo should do, it gives insight on what an artist is capable of while being just barely decent by itself. Lacy is undeniably talented as hell (and he's a year older than me, which is depressing), but his songs here don't do much. They meander along with some nice production and some nice production but they're little more than just "nice". Shows great promise but it's a boring listen.

Fiona Apple - Tidal (1996)
>singer/songwriter, piano rock

Apple's a great singer, and she's got a nack for melody, but her songs lack any real progression and her musical aesthetic is /really/ uninteresting. It's piano rock filtered through a very '90s lens, which is just an unappealing combination no matter how you look at it. Her sound would get much more interesting as she incorporated more jazz and folk influences, this straightforward alt. piano rock, doesn't do her songwriting justice, and her songwriting isn't nearly as concise as it is on her best track. Singles like "Shadowboxer" and "Criminal" are undeniable, but I'd say they benefit from the trimming of a single version, like every other track on the album they're weighed down by about two or so minutes of unecessary shit that only detracts from the song. A bit of a rocky debut.

2.0+

The Shins - Oh, Inverted World (2001)
>indie pop

This is alright, honestly. It's admittedly bland, as a fair amount of indie pop albums, and the brevity of the album works against it, not allowing any track to leave any real mark, but it's got a mysterious, cold vibe to it I really like, and "Caring Is Creepy" and "New Slang" are undeniable tunes. But for every "New Slang" there's another track that does absolutely nothing, which makes for a really uneven album, which is a killer considering how short it is. Pretty darn pleasant though. Anyone that likes Murmur should probably listen to this, it's a modern update of that album in every way, all the way down to the tracks that don't do anything.

Yeah don't worry I'm not. I just know Freak Out didn't stand out too much on first listen but it really blew me away around two or three listens in. So I'm trying to keep an open mind with Zappa in hopes that another of his albums does the same idk.

So I'm coming up on 1,000 ratings and I'm probably gonna do a ridiculously long album for my 1,000th. Thinking about this:

Any better ideas?

by doing a rating? Fishmans have been praised here long before Jangle, Yamir, or I have been here believe me.

probably a good choice anyways so those two people don't cry
>>
>>72379876
Yeah my GF had a RYM briefly but she got burnt out/doesn't listen to much new music anymore. But I showed her my account the other day and she was basically like "holy shit, you've heard that much music?". That was about it though.

I still feel like a huge nerd when people find my account though
>>
>>72379980
yeah I'm picking my 1000th rating solely based on how it will affect Jangle and Yamir
>>
>>72380027
Same. When a friend of mine asked me how many albums I've rated on rym I lied and told them I'd rated just around 2,000 and they were still like "holy shit that's so many!"

To be fair, it is, I just hate feeling like such a dweebus.

Yowie - Synchromysticism
>advanced math rock
not much to say if you heard their previous releases, they're still totally true to their philosophy, only they got better in terms of phrasing, transitioning and structuring their weird and intricate riffs so this might win over some who thought cryptooology sounded like a blur. there's a pulse to these tracks even if it's never steady for long
9/10
>>
>>72380495
It was boring af compared to their earlier stuff though
>>
>>72380520
dunno man, prolly just that i'm not as excited about cryptooology as i was at the time so a bit of a change of pace was welcomed
i revisited to their second album too and i'd also say i like that one more

Couple of reviews

Amon Duul II - Phallus Dei

For some reason I never got around to Amon Duul, and after listening to this I don't feel like I missed heaps. While I did enjoy it it didn't really present that much to excite me. The last song was a clear stand out, but some of those vocals were far too camp for me. Still, plenty of really great instrumental parts. 6+

Bert Jansch L.A. Turnaround

I was previously familiar with Jansch through a couple of guitar pieces, yet hadn't ever listened to a full album. I learned the song Chambertin a couple of years ago, and I still think it's an incredible piece. However, the rest of the album was a real disappointment. I really don't care for his songwriting, and Lady Nothing was the only song other than Chambertin that I liked (also the only other instrumental song). His guitar playing is of course great, which made some of the other songs ok, but wasn't enough to hold up the album. 4

I will never finish this hecking tourney now will I

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra / Yoel Levi - The Rite of Spring; Pulcinela Suite (Shamepai) vs MX-80 Sound - Big Hits / Hard Attack (rym robot man)
The Stravinsky's piece is honestly amazing. Tense, complex, an interesting concept behind it. This exact performance succeeds to deliver a very specific atmosphere, so yeah that's p cool.
Big Hits kinda sounds like an extended improvisation rather than a collection of separate songs. It's made in a peculiar way, like using instruments you never ever hear in post-punk. Still with all its queerness it sounds quite safe and neutral, I guess I'd prefer it to be more of a statement.

Alban Berg Quartett - String Quartets (s) vs Boris - Flood (rym robot man)
In my opinion, Boris did drone better than they do anything else. It's really great how the album manages to be mellow and intense at the same time. The absence of vocals is appropriate.
Subtle delivery of Debussy and Ravel by Alban Berg Quartett. Kinda a little bit too subtle sometimes. Still, I liked it.

Shamepai (Kanzler)
