I put flatwounds on my P-bass and I get it now. This sounds like all the P-basses I hear on records, and with the musicman humbucker in the bridge I have more sound variations available.
Daddario chromes by the way, so they still sound fairly sharp/snappy and not just like a dead thump.

There are lots who could match him in technical ability and theory knowledge.

Alnico, the pickups are Delano PC5AL and MC5AL, I have a 3-way miniswitch for the humbucker, series, parallel or single coil.
>>
>>72108625
No, serial number checks out. Rickenbacker 650a circa 1992. Got her off reverb. Previous owner did a "Kurt ballou" mod to it. Locking tuners, emg 81 bridge, emg H neck. I actually really love the neck pickup. Tons of gig wear, wouldn't be surprised if it was secretly Kurt's back up 650. Came with the original case and all the paper work.

>>
So my guitar instructor doesn't really correct my form as much as he should (too late to change now, moving soon anyway) and I've come to realize my techniques are somewhere between "not 100% right" and "completely wrong, stop" - I've been playing about six years but got REALLY lazy (read: insomnia fucking up my life) over the last 3ish

My strumming is really bad, my picking is probably not right, my left hand doesn't even look close to correct when playing and so on, any good ways to fix this with online resources? Everything I read tends to contradict eachother, especially with holding a pick properly and where to place the left thumb on the neck
>>
>>72113048
"Improve" is subjective but it changes it drastically. Vintage 30's have a significant mid spike which can be grating, but is easily fixed by rolling back the mids and highs a bit. It's also really good for clear high gain that cuts through but if you want a darker tone I wouldn't use it
>>
>>72113083
pi/gg/u should offer helpful advice when summoned, but always in the form of riddles or half-truths
>>
>>72113102

>>
>>72113084
The best thing you can do is practice while paying attention to your weak areas. Unless you're aiming for classical jazz master level, what's best is what sounds the best for you. Most instructional sites are just regurgitating their writers' personal preferences.
>>
>>72113178
I'm more or less trying to spot my weak areas, what's wrong specifically and how to correct them
>>
>>72113158
Yeah they are perfect for that kinda stuff. V30's are pretty much the go to speaker match for 5150's so it'll get you the Van Halen sound and Black Sabbath. pretty much every genre of metal sounds good on them. I play death metal with a 6505 through them and despite most people telling you to get a closed back for higher gain I actually prefer an open back cab with these to help soften the mid spike

>>72113084
A lot of techniques with playing guitar, and instruments in general, come down to your biology and preferences. Holding a pick for instance is a very personal thing. What you need to remember when it comes to choosing the right styles for yourself is that you want your playing to be relaxed, tension free, and as economical as possible. More tension will only tire you quickly and prevent you from moving quickly. Your movements should only be as big as you need to hit the string, and no more. Same thing with your pinky, it should be as close to the strings as possible as much as you can manage. With your thumb you'll usually want it to be in the center of the neck at the apex of the curve, lined up between your index and middle finger. It can help to study other instrument techniques because these same ideas apply all of them.

>>72113375
They're worth it if you make experimental music. Bought one probably 10 years ago, never regretted it once.

If this is your mindset you'll never be happy. Either write everything yourself to how you want it or work with the band mates and let them be creative how they want. Otherwise you will continue to be miserable since you'll never find the "perfect bandmates".

Working with friends is also unwise because they aren't connected to you by similar musical tastes or aspirations unlike other potential band members you may not know yet.

I went to a jazz jam tonight in
Poughkeepsie, NY, at "The Derby"
and it was
"JAM"-
packed with talent.

It was so amazing, yet also so depressing.

I asked four of them (most of them were probably twice my age, and i'm early/mid 20s) if they had any CDs, recordings, internet presence, anything at all...and nothing.

they're singing playing better than artists that sell out madison square garden, to a group of 10-20 people at a tiny tavern / bar.

most of them have been doing this for 20+ years, twice a week at least. some paying gigs, some not.

but.

it makes me so sad.

if you're playing 100 shows a year, I'm not saying you need to be "that guy" bringing tshirts and stickers and posters everywhere, with some cute girl at a merch table selling them while you play, but it would be really great to say "Here's my bandcamp/soundcloud/demo-disc, if you like my stuff, here's some more"

Even an amazing guitarist my age "oh, yeah, I keep meaning to do that..."

Like, these are people who (some of them anyway) are looking at sheet music they've never seen before, improvising, playing off of the other people there, and absolutely kicking ass. I can post some recordings if you want.

Some of them, it was their first night there, some of them had been there like 300 times.

But what I mean is, they were all very, very, very good. So good I only played one song at this "open mic jazz jam" kind of thing.

And the bottom line is, kids, no visibility, no exposure, no distribution, and you (and your music) will get you nowhere except a "hey man that was amazing/awesome" from some strangers at a bar.

And if that satisfies you, great, but we all know that the world shouldn't work that way.

(not gonna lie the vibes in there were awesome and I'd rather play to the 15 people there than a sold out MSG, but the point remains.)
>>
>>72116878
I would love to hear some recordings. I used to do the same thing here in Chicago while I was in college, and the experience of playing with older, more experienced musicians really pushed me to improve my jazz playing and general improvising. I'm actually looking to put together a funk/jam group like the ones I used to play with. Kind of like The Roots meets Vulfpeck.
>>
>>72115698
Buy a solid state amp if you're playing bass. I don't know of many bassists in any genre that use tubes. The condensed dynamics of a solid state amp are well-suited to where a bass should sit in the mix.

Jazz Jams are the Blooze Bar Bands of the jazz world, lots of good players but most of the people that go to these regularly have shit for creativity so they just settle in the old and comfortable for the rest of their lives. Nothing wrong with that but if you want a career in Jazz you're going to have to get used to composing and experimenting with contemporary styles of improvisation.
>>
>>72117205
In my experience these jams tend to draw in younger guys in their 20s. All of the guys I used to jam with either have careers in jazz or make a living playing in instrumentally-driven bands and teaching.

It's funny because when older musicians do turn up at these gigs they tend to be middle-aged guys with a Les Paul and can't play over anything more complicated than a I-IV-V cadence.

While I would say I have composition skills that I learned from writing, I'm just now realizing that I need to learn a couple songs in the same genre(s) I write in to help me both practice, but see how certain parts are written.

tldr; I get you don't want to learn full songs, but it will help in the long run if you learn a couple that capture the sound you like to play, and a couple that are polar opposite because that will help you understand it more

My first guitar was a Squier 51 that was actually my main guitar for 9 years or so. I bought an Epiphone LP Studio after having played for a year but I constantly had problems with the input jack and the guitar was eventually stolen anyway. I kept using the 51 because it was reliable, sounded good (I replaced the bridge pickup) and was easy to play. I bought a Jazzmaster a couple years ago but it didn't write have the "bite" for leads that the Squier did and just didn't play as smoothly. So when I decided to upgrade again, I realized that I was basically looking for a Strat, which is what I bought and I couldn't be happier with the decision.

Alright guys, I think I'm a pretty decent player but whenever we record with my band I sound like complete fucking trash, and I feel I'm the weak point of the band. I have been playing for years but never bothered with eq's and amp settings. I didn't even learn how to properly set my pedals, I used to put the wah right next to the amp, what's a good site to learn how to get a good tone?
>>
>>72121758
You need more mids.
>>
>>72121758
>>72121788
Probably less gain and/or reverb too.
>>
>>72121788
So I just set the mids on 10 on the amp?
>>
>>72121818
I don't know the exact values you'll need. Most guys when playing by themselves want as big a sound as possible. Lots of bass and treble, distortion and reverb. Once you're playing with a band it all turns into mud. Mids and lower gain normally make you sound more guitary and less fizzy.

What are your normal amp/effect settings? What kind of band are you in? How many guitarists are there? Keys?
>>
>>72121726

No. . . . I guess I should
>>
>>72121870
I'm the only guitar player in the band, no keyboards. Just bass/guitar/drums, normally when I play alone I just put the bass on 8, mids on 5 or 6 and treble on 9, gain on barely 3 since I have a shitty amp and gain is also master volume, at least on clean. This is the tone I've always wanted: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiXLavFXfcs
>>
>>72121742
thanks, I learned the root note whith each pattern, I just have a question regarding this, please help me out here:
If I play A major, will A be my root note for the whole song? Or does the root note change with every chord that's played in a certain bar of the song?
For example if I play the a major blues, the root note of my pentatonic scale will shift, depending on where I am in the blues scheme, meaning that my whole scale shifts with the root note right? (I, IV, V is what I'm talking about, for example A, D, G)
>>
>>72121298
Good advice to be honest.
>>
>>72121925
You need like... no bass when you're playing with a guitarist. It'll just create mud and clashing harmonics and it'll be nasty. Especially for that kinda sound. It can kinda work if you're doubling the same part and want a blown out sludgey thing. Also a 9 on treble would be harsh and piercing but it depends on the amp and if your drummer goes spastic on his cymbals.
>>
>>72122067
Alright thanks, I'll guess I'll lower both the bass and treble and up the mids

You don't need anywhere near that much treble.

Here's how your EQ fits in a band's live mix: you can think of your bandmates as each occupying their own unique "sonic sphere", or frequency, that is both a distinct musical texture and supportive of the other instruments.

Bass drum/toms/bass guitar: lower register, or bass frequencies
Guitar/vox: middle register/frequencies
Cymbals/lead guitar: higher register, treble frequencies

Unless you're Yngwie, you probably aren't playing leads ALL THE TIME, so your EQ as a guitarist should sit mostly in the middle. If you dial in too much bass, your chords and riffs will get drowned out by the bassist, and if you're too treble-y, you'll get lost in the cymbals.

Now, don't get me wrong, a scooped mids kind of sound has its place in the music world -
check out literally every metal band between 1983 to 1990 - but beyond that you're better off occupying that middle zone in your mix.

Here are my EQ settings. They work really well for the prog rock and jazz fusion stuff I play and for most rock in general. I based them off of those used by some of my favorite guitar players in the same genres:

Mids: 4.5
Bass: 6
Treble: 3.5

So to answer your first question (Chicago guy from earlier here): both? You can't study jazz guitar without knowing a healthy bit of theory or you'll run into a brick wall where your playing won't sound as "developed" as a jazz guitarist's should.

There's nothing super special about the technique involved in jazz guitar if you've already gotten comfortable with lead playing. Alternate picking, arpeggios, hammer-ons and pull-offs are all common devices in jazz guitar playing. I already had a fair amount of technique under my belt when I started getting into jazz, so the biggest hurdle I faced (and continue to struggle with) is how to sound like a JAZZ guitarist. So that's what brought me into the world of dom7add9 arpeggios, tritone substitutions, 2-5 cycles, melodic minor harmony, etc. If it's pure technique you're after, watch some Steve Vai or Guthrie Govan videos. Just keep in mind that their phrasing is informed by years of studying music theory.

As for the jam session, yes, you should absolutely go. One of the best motivators you'll ever experience as a musician is getting your ass kicked by someone much better than you. I wouldn't have developed as a musician without those late nights jamming with music school students in Lincoln Park's dive bars. It's a great opportunity to pick your fellow musicians' brains, or at least get a feel for more creative improvising. Which shop is it at, if you don't mind me asking?

dayumm man that's the truth right there
>>
>>72123232
people say its objectively and unarguably bad to rest some fingers while picking, for getting a spatial sense or whatever reason

but famous virtuosos like michael angelo batio and others do that, so...

practice till you can do it without touching, its better to be able to, anyway

>>
>>72122813
Alright, might try and grab one if it plays nicely then, thank you
>>
>>72123359
>what to practice
spider exercises, scales and songs and licks
>how long to pratice it
till you git gud at it
>at what tempo
start slow so you can play it perfectly clean then speed up gradually
>>
>>72122907
I guess I'll take a theory fundamental course before I tackle Jazz, my lead playing is decent so I don't know how I'd fair but I'll study Steve and Gurthie and see what I pickup

The lead guitarist in my band is amazing since he's been doing daily 3 hour scale runs since he was 11 and he's been pushing me to learn discipline in my playing and getting humiliated by a couple old guys might be the final nail in the coffin.
It's at Revolution Guitar Company in Elmhurst, there's a lot of musicians there due to the local college

Even in a hollow acoustic guitar, how can tone be impacted if the pickups are under the strings? Does the string vibrate differently due to the construction?

I thought the pickup would have to be in the airbox (like in a violin) for it to make any difference.

YES
FUCKING YES
THE STRING RESONATES WITH THE BODY, FRETBOARD AND ALL
HELL

WHAT ARE YOU GONNA SAY NEXT? STAINLESS FRETS DO NOT SOUND BRIGHTER?

TRY STRETCHING A STRING WITH YOUR HAND AND PRESSING WITH YOUR HAND IN THE MIDDLE. THEN PRESS IT WITH A PLIER. THATS HOW FRETS AND SADDLES AFFECT TONE

I've owned this Stratocaster since 1987. Had it refretted with stainless steel frets a few years back, it still sounds exactly the fucking same. And believe me, I would know the difference.

What's a good delay pedal that goes well with reverb?

>>72113655
Ibanez S420. Its extremely light, (probably the lightest guitar I have ever touched). Been playing that for almost 4 years, and now I am afraid to switch to anything heavier sense I am so used to jumping around on stage with pretty much a weightless guitar.

hey fellas a guy on my local CL is selling a squire vm jaguar bass w/ a gator hardshell case. I'm only interested in the case as I have a bass already; he's asking 100 dollars for it. Is that price worth it? What can you tell me about gator cases? This case will fit a fender p-bass right?

Yeah, I've never seen any one get away with a Marshall MG live save some local death metal. And they were just scraping by.

Your rhcp clip sounds more "Marshall" than "Fender." By that I mean it has a lot of mids and treble with little bass. With "Fender" cleans like you'd normally hear from rhcp, you'd get more of a 7b/4m/6t curve. This is for a pretty big sparkly clean. Pushing the mids on a lot of valve amps acts as a little extra gain, so the headroom shrinks.

For the most part, Fender/Marshall/Vox tone stacks are anemic. The amps kind of default to the tones I mentioned above and the stacks let you shift them a little. Since they're pretty much locked in, just be liberal with the eq and try to get the guitar to a good place in the mix like anon mentioned. If you can get the guitar heard well without fighting the bass, vocals, or cymbals then you've done something right.

I really need to replace my strat with an S500.
>>
>>72125461
You could sell it for an upcharge, or have a pretty cool spare base with a case for cheap. A new case shouldn't run more than 50 or 60 unless you order one and have to pay shipping.

On second look, the pocket the body sits in is not sculpted in a specific shape. Will probably fit unless your headstock is a but longer or whatever.
>>
I desperately want to play in a psych band but my brain and fingers are too retarded for chords. Should I just start learning Bass and sucking up to charismatic prodigies?

>>72125676

Bingo.

Remember to play the 5th and 7th instead of the root note.

That's about all the information you need to play bass.
