Will my acoustic play as smoothly as my electric if I put electric strings on it? I really can't get the same bends out of the acoustic as the electric, but I don't want to waste a set of strings and not enjoy the sound

Retard. Not even being toxic here, you're just retarded
>>
>>71960925
I've actually done this. It'll be way easier to bend, etc with electric gauge strings but it won't sound nearly as good as an acoustic with bronze strings. (At least as an acoustic guitar. Come to think of it, I haven't done it as a plugged-in acoustic...)

How can I get rid of some of the attack on my picking? When I try to play tremolo stuff with heavy delay/reverb (like Godspeed always do) the CHKCHKCHKCHKCHK sound of the picking drowns out the actual notes.
>>
>>71961231
I hate pick noise too. Use a softer material pick, and/or a thinner pick, or hit the string with the pick at a bit of an angle. Flat picking is a bit chicky or clicky. Full-on cross-picking is more scrapey. But if you hit it at an angle the pick will hit and glide over...so hard to describe.

I use Pickboy Edge Carbon Nylon picks, 0.60 gauge as a standard. They seem to be really "clean" of pick noise when playing as I described above. They wear really fast, though.

before you say anything - that is a MIM strat neck, noiseless p90 in the bridge, and kluson locking tuners. i have literally no idea what the body is made of, its really, really heavy.

it sounds ok, but an MIM strat neck on ebay is 150 alone. i talked the guitar shop guy down to 200. did i fuck up?

>I don't want to waste a set of strings
either so I just put the usef strings from my electric guitars on it when i changed them. Dunno about a guitar I'd really cared about but was ok for my acoustic garbagecaster.

>What's the advantage to having less features as opposed to more pickups and tone knobs?
- Price
- Ease of use
- Low maintenance
- Less malfunction opportunity
- More time to spend playing instead of fiddling with numerous knobs, switches, wiring options and pickup heights.

what would be a ghetto fix for this broken intonation screw

i just want it all the way to the tailpiece side so i suppose just stick something on the blue mark to prevent it from coming back? what can put there?
>>
>>71962601
What's exactly broken? looks like the blue mark is obscuring it.
>>
>>71962601
Take the bridge completely off and drop a dab of superglue right in front of the saddle and one behind it on the intonation screw and let it dry completely. If you need to get it of later the super glue will harden into a "plastic" like substance you can just break off the metal surface so it's not something that's permanent.

Honestly though, just go to Stewart MacDonald and order an new screw/saddle for $5.

my 1968 Ibanez 1910 bought for $100
it was originally a full hollow but someone removed the floating bridge, and tailpiece with trem bar, cut a hole in the back and added a wooden block and installed a cheap bridge and tailpiece. the neck also has play and shifts randomly so it doesn't keep tune worth shit.

Will using my pinky finger be advantageous when learning fingerstyle? Most people seem to only use it when they have to.
>>
>>71965408
Using your pinky finger during exercises will help you use it more confidently when you need to. That doesn't mean you should force yourself to use your pinky when you are performing a song. It's important to separate exercises and regular playing.

do limiters affect the sound's volume kinda like a compressor?
i used to think it just "limited" the sound from going past a defined peak, but when i used it it made the sound louder, like it normalized to 0.0db after limiting. even the simplest limiter plugin of reaper does that

>been using 0.6mm Tortex picks for 5 years
>found some 1.0 mm Jazz IIIs and Ibanez Grip Wizards lying around from way back when
>try them out
Now I know why I switched to the 0.6 Tortex. The Grip Wizards are small as fuck which makes strumming unpleasant, and while the Jazz IIIs have a good size (not too large for picking fast, not too small for strumming) and shape (picking fast feels light and easy) and the thickness means that pick tapping sounds a lot better than with the 0.6 mm Tortex, I feel a lot less connected to the guitar (can't feel the strings that well because the pick doesn't bend) and lose a lot of the treble in the attack.
>>
>>71968452
Not that poster, but if you get a chance, sit down with a righty and a lefty, go with whatever feels more natural. Only warning is lefty instruments are much harder to come by.

Guitar and bass are similar only in where the notes are. They're played completely differently, and guitar players who say "bass is easy" usually make really, really shitty bassists. Go with which ever one interests you more.
>>
>>71968892
>can't feel the strings that well because the pick doesn't bend

If anything a solid pick would allow you to feel the strings more, as the force is transferred through the pick to your fingers.

>>

Wrong, the same force applies whether you're using rigid or floppy picks, it's just that I'm used to the feeling of that force flexing the pick rather than just angling it in my hand. I don't know how to explain it, you would have to feel it.
Maybe the fact that the thicker picks have a more rounded edge compared to the thin ones contributes to this, or maybe it's just the shape of the "point" of the pick but in any case, I feel like I get better "response" from the strings using the Tortex picks.
>>
>>71969130
That's a pretty big topic, and something that takes a long time to develop the intuition needed. How familiar are you with cadences and functional harmony? Also, when you're playing scales, are you thinking about the notes in relation to the root (i.e. chord tones)?
>>
>>71969548
Yes, I am familiar about "intervals", or as you call them chord tones. Root, Maj 2nd, Min 2nd, Perfect 5th. Root, Maj 3rd, Perfect 5th make a Maj Chord. Add a Maj7tth and you get a Maj7th chord, etc. I know Lydian's main character is its raised 4rth (#4), etc.

I am not so familiar with cadences, and functional harmony. That's something I need to work on. I am still all ears though(Though, in this case, eyes).

if your acoustic guitar is not made to receive steel strings (or nickel, etc.), then don't fucking put them on it, you'll fuck it up. Metal strings exert a much higher tension on the instrument.
>>
>>71969628
Intervals and chord tones are similar concepts but not the same thing. The kind of playing I'm referring to is sometimes called "vertical playing" where the musicians aren't just playing a scale over a progression (which is referred to as "horizontal playing"), but thinking in arpeggios relating to each chord in the progression. The notes of the arpeggios are the "chord tones" I'm talking about.

Both are important ways of playing, but many beginners only know how to play horizontally and have a hard time connecting their notes their playing to the chord progression (other than the fact that they're in the same key).

Sorry that this is getting long-winded, just trying to get us on the same page. It's hard to talk about modal stuff without this reference point. Give me a second to try to turn the focus back to modal playing.

Here's a video that discusses "vertical" and "horizontal" playing in very basic terms, though it's on a piano (also I didn't watch the whole thing, so I have no idea where it goes after the first three minutes)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PmNh5y2PAs

To get back to playing with a certain modal sound, there's a reason I asked about chord tones, functional harmony etc. If you take the major scale and play the notes without any tonal reference anchoring things down (either from backing tracks, other musicians, or in your head), you're not consciously playing in any "mode" (or you could say you're playing "all" of them).

Playing modally is about changing the way you focus on a particular scale. People tend to say stuff like "Dorian is the major scale starting on the 2nd note," which is kinda true, but also misses the point. Dorian is the mode when you use the 2nd note as your root note, the thing everything centers around (both melodies and chord progressions). If you're not basing your thinking around that particular note, you're not playing Dorian. You're just noodling around on the major scale. And to be aware of your notes in relation to that tonal center (the root), it really helps to be able to think in terms of chord tones.

Let me know if this is making sense. It took me a while to feel comfortable with the topic, and it's pretty hard to condense it into a couple posts.
>>

You can't into physics.
>>
>>71970152
Not only that but the guitar was released only five years ago and it was cheaper new.
>>
>>71970169
It makes complete sense. One question I do have on the topic is how you make the second note of the major scale, in this case the "Dorian note", the "focus"? How can you make other notes sound like they are being based on that note in specific(2nd note "Dorian") instead of the root. Do you avoid the root note at all cost?
Also, please, feel free to continue, I am learning a whole lot from this section. I truly do appreciate it anon-sensei.

As for playing modal progressions, I would really, really encourage you to learn about common practice cadences at the very least, which is a good intro to understanding functional harmony. Wikipedia's article on musical cadences is decent (though a bit abstract), but it's a very important concept so I bet you can find some other good explanations of the ideas. I think cadences are pretty intuitive, but defining the intuition can be tricky and might take time to settle in. Using cadences with the basic major key is pretty straightforward, and playing with that is a good idea before applying the idea to modal progressions.

Like with melodic modal playing, creating modal progressions also means writing a progression that "centers" around the note of your mode. The ii V progression (Dm G, in the key of C) that jazz and jam bands love playing over is essentially a Dorian progression if it doesn't resolve to the root chord (Down By The River is a well known example that does this).

>>
>>71970476
Awesome, I will look for some cadences, and functional harmony articles to get my feet wet on the subject. I will practice on the subject as well after restringing my guitar(new strings yay).

One question tho, is it possible to sound "modal" without a backing track? Stupid question, but I felt the need to ask it lol.

Also, what is your favorite mode, and why? Which mode is your least favorite, and why?
>>
>>71970562

well I do it hoping others will post theirs, Idk
>>
>>71970353
That's a really good question, and it's kind of hard to answer because a lot of it comes down to intuition. It was a gradual understanding about the idea in my case.

But for starters, I'd suggest playing over a progression (or just a single chord) and coming up with phrases that start and end on the "root" of your mode. That's going to immediately frame your playing around that particular note and help put you in that "mode" (and will also sound pretty boring after a bit, but the goal is developing focus, not expression, at this point). Once you feel comfortable with that, experiment with that idea. Maybe make phrases from different chord tones (going upwards in diatonic thirds is really useful), or see other ways you can tweak the idea.

You don't need to avoid any notes, you just have to maintain your focus on your "modal root" or whatever you want to call it. And melodically, that comes down to being mindful of your phrasing and how your notes relate to the root (i.e. "chord tones"/vertical thinking).
>>
>>71970207
You're technically correct, both picks do NOT resist with the same force (at least within a limited amount of time). Let's look at this more in-depth.

When applying force on a rigid object, it resists with a counter-force of the same magnitude and 180° phase shifted, i.e. in the opposite direction. F_C(t) = -F (note that t does not appear on the right side of the equation, i.e. the counter-force is time-invariant.)
When applying force on a spring-like object, the counter-force is time-dependent with F_C(t) = F*(e^(-Ct) - 1) where F is the initial force and C is a constant whose unit is s^-1. As you can see it is an exponential function which approaches -F for t -> infinity and which starts out at 0. This means that while the floppy object INITIALLY doesn't resist the force, after a certain time determined by its stiffness (here C), it will resist with almost exactly the same amount of force as a rigid object.
The fact that the pick doesn't resist the force initially means that it stores energy, by bending. This energy is released once the applied force vanishes, leading to the pick oscillating. The exact nature of the oscillation depends on the pick's stiffness and shape as well as extraneous factors (grip strength, mainly). In any case, this oscillation is dampened and stops after a short time.

I think what I'm used to and perceive as "responsiveness" is this progressive counterforce and the oscillation of the pick after "releasing" it. In any case, with thick picks these effects are less pronounced.
>>
>>71970644
Awesome, excellent practice idea anon. I will practice that along my phrasing. That's another thing tho, how do you jazz musicians(I am assuming you play jazz, based on your knowledge in music theory, because let's face it, only jazz players care about music theory lol jk) never run out of interesting licks? How can I work on my phrasing so that I always come up with interesting licks, and not the same boring, muscle memory kind of licks. Thanks a lot anon.

>One question tho, is it possible to sound "modal" without a backing track?
Yes, totally. But it's trickier and requires a good familiarity with the idea to do it consistently.

>Also, what is your favorite mode, and why? Which mode is your least favorite, and why?
I'm not sure I have a "favorite" but I end up playing Dorian and Lydian a lot when I'm just noodling at home. I also like messing with the jazz minor scale's modes a lot (basically the melodic minor scale).

Locrian is my least favorite as far as the OG major scale modes. It's not that I don't like Locrian, it's just a difficult one of work with that doesn't have a lot of outside application (especially when there are similar scales/modes I like/use more).

The best thing about playing guitar is that there's no race. You take your time, take it slow and steady and make sure you play something cleanly before you start to go fast. Build up some muscle memory, do chromatic and picking exercises.
>>
>>71970779
Cool, I too, like the sound of Lydian, and Dorian a lot. One of the main reasons why I wanted to start playing modally is because I want my playing to be more "exotic", and to not rely on the pentatonic scales so much. Not that playing pentatonic scales is bad, but it kind of gets old after a while.

First of all, I think every musician occasionally gets the feeling that they're playing something stale or overdone. Always strive to improve, and don't get overly frustrated if you feel stuck. Happens to everyone, including the best improvisors.

That said, I think skilled improvisors do a few things that set them apart from who play stock licks. For one, they have a strong connection with their internal musical ear and their instrument, look at guys like George Benson and Keith Jarrett who sing along with their playing. That's actually a really good exercise to reinforce that connection. Being able to do that means you're only limited by your creativity (within the realm of your technique), instead of struggling to find those notes on your instrument.

But on top of that, jazz musicians know many ways to play over a progression or chord, and they've practiced and internalized those ideas to death, while the average musicians know one or two scales and some licks. Just being aware of the vertical/horizontal thinking and chord tones makes ideas like substitutions, altered scales and so on much easier to deal with.

Also, practice your scales in many different ways, other than just straight up and down. Practice them in sequences (e.g. 123,234,345,456,567,671) and in different intervals, like all fourths, (e.g 14736251).

I've got to take off, but hope that gives you some stuff to mess with. Don't get frustrated if it doesn't sink in immediately. Some of this shit I learned years ago and didn't click intuitively until way, way later.

Yes. Jazz III was so small that it started to hurt my hand. That was the main reason I wanted something else between my fingers. Wegen plays a lot more smoothly, because the tip is beveled and the material seems to have less friction. The grip is great too. Not as deep as in Big Stubby for example and the grooves prevent rotation. Jazz III is more accurate but GP is more versatile and the risk of me hitting a string with my thumb is also smaller. Tremolo picking is easier and I don't have to move the pick between my fingers as much depending on what I'm playing. Gave the other one for my friend to try and he soon asked, if I want to sell it.

genuinely fell asleep after posting the reply.
it's not. you can set a compressor up to work exactly the same way as a limiter.
depending on the limiter they might have a set compression ratio on them which whoever designed it thinks works the best.
Anything 10:1 and over is usually considered limiting rather than compressing.
As for attack/release, you can limit with a standard compression attack, but the faster the attack the more you brickwall your sound, especially with a high compression ratio.
You can do it all in a compressor, and you probably get more freedom to experiment, but limiters are gonna have their own output sound which you might not be able to distinctly recreate

I'm looking into acoustic strings for my archtop, and I usually keep strings on until they break, or about a year. Anyone know any good long-lasting strings for this purpose? I do tend towards middle of the road tension, as I like to be able to play hard to achieve buzz if desired, but also have a fair dynamic range before buzz occurs. I'm only interested in round wound or polished/ground/pressured strings.

On electric I've found d'addario very long lasting, but I'm not sure I should assume acoustic strings will be the same.

Just a tonal choice, man. I know it's unusual, but I don't tend to corrode strings unlike most other people when I sweat, so for me it makes more sense to get strings that take a while to break in and get mellow than to get strings that start out mellow which I have to replace often.

Don't get me wrong, I hate gross strings as much as anyone, but strings just don't get nasty as quickly when I play. I know I'm in the minority there.

A mode is a different set of notes, if you use the notes that are different than the "normal" scale you'll sound like you are playing in that mode

That's not how modes work, eg: D dorian contains the same notes as C major and A minor.

Man, this is what I'm talking about. When everything is focused on your favorite shitposter and meta /gg/, you can't even talk about what strings you like. If you love shitposting and apparently replying to shitposters, then you need to go to /b/.

I swear to god, nearly every aspect of guitar has a hundred answers, and if your response to anything different is "what the fuck," there's not even conversation to be had.

Just a doubled or 8 string bass. They aren't guitar strings, though. Generally they are higher tension for a more even tone.
>>

This is about as far as I've gotten with modes too. I know you can get a modal sound if you play those notes over a drone of the root note of the mode you want to play.

So if you play the notes of C major over an A drone, it sounds like A minor, and if you play them over a D drone they sound like D dorian. I don't know how it worth regarding chords though.

They are meant to mostly be played simultaneously with the paired string, and are tuned one octave up from the double. Same as a mandolin or a 12 string guitar. Well, some mandolins, and most 12 strings, also have unison pairs on the upper strings.

Rubbed oil finish anon, feelsgood. Painted necks are gnarly imo, don't feel good sliding up and down, often too sticky
>>
>>71980533
Leave it as it is. Painted guitar necks generally feel a bit stickier, plus nobody cares what the back of your neck looks like. Wood necks are easier to sand and oil should the neck get worn enough to need it.

i used to have a glossy black Epiphone LP, and holy shit I hated that neck but it was so pretty I couldn't sand it. the only plus I can see about a glossy neck is when lubricated with sweat and shit playing live it became slippery which was kinda inspiring in a weird way

sold it for 100 bucks to some kid like a decade ago. i actually like the cheap matte finish they put on my gibson melody maker though, the neck on it feels amazing
>>
>>71977399
Once every 3 months or so desu. Anybody who says that's outrageous is an ADHD scrublet.
>>
>>71980861
Very glad to say the only gloss-painted guitars I own are pretty comfy too. But they're older, one has the gloss on the neck basically worn off, the other two are old nitro finishes, and despite being a gloss finish, don't get sticky unless they're wet. All in all, not that bad.

Most modern poly finishes though make for nasty sticky necks.

And yeah, the satin finishes on the more modern Gibbos are pretty decent. I played a Les Paul Standard faded model a few months back, was quite memorably a good finish on the neck. Whole thing was nice, really.
>>
>>71980900
This mostly. Depends on your needs though. Strings sound new for about 4-5 hours of heavy playing. After that they hold out for a while without too much change. Then they start sounding and looking like shit after a month. Typical at-home guitar player should only have to swap once every 2-3 months or so. All of this is assuming you take good care of them and you don't sweat lemon juice.

When playing shows though, it's important to swap your strings out far more often.
>>
where can I get this?
>>
>>71981044
i have a buddy with meat hands, he will literally make strings go dead in like 5 minutes. just nasty, nasty hamburger hands. sucks too, because he has really nice guitars and I can never enjoy playing them because when you run your hand down the neck you just feel chunks of hamburger and dickcheese all over the strings.
>>
>>71962718
I'd go something by Seymour Duncan. I think they have some "jazz" pickups that probably sound good. Throw in super distortions if you want some hott pickups
