>>
>>72128609
>attempting to play at least 20 minutes a day

Back in the day when I was NEET, I used to get up at 11am, have breakfast, play til 7pm, notice I hadn't eaten and I was feeling light headed, have some food, play til 9pm, watch tv, go to bed. Did that for years, got gud. If you can't play for at least an hour every day then you're wasting your time and you might as well sell your guitar because you will never learn anything.
>>
>>72128609
You can get a lot done in 20 minutes if you concentrate on one thing at a time, but I would reccomend practicing for much longer, albeit with regular breaks.
>>
>>72128609
Also, join a band or start one when you feel confident enough, I found that I learned a lot more within the context of a good band when I started playing bass. It can really help in terms of motivation.
>>
>>72128609
20 minutes? Sounds like you aren't motivated
>>
>>72128609
Play more than 20 fucking minutes in a day. Why do you want to get better at guitar? Because either you've got the busiest schedule anyone's ever had, or the amount you feel like playing guitar every day is 20 minutes, and if that's how little you want to play, what's it matter how good you are, you obviously don't really give a shit
>>
>>72128756
Ill take this opportunity to ask you a question then, ive been playing for 4 months and both me and my instructor feel i need new strings, They go out of tune quickly and are real loose which makes playing up higher a real bitch.

The thing is Im working on a real nice heirloom bass from '79 with a custom pickup it sounds great and I don't want to disgrace my dead uncle by putting on some shit strings.

What should I buy
>>
>>72127803
Great sound. What are those pickups ? Look kinda like rick pickups, or some of the ones from old Eastwoods
>>
Just did a string change on my acoustic. New strings are fucking awesome. I will have to record a clyp later.
>>
>>72129195
Thanks! I have no idea what sort of pups these are as there is almost no information out there on these guitars, my only guess is that they're a variant on the gold foil pups you see on other cheap guitars from the era like Teisco.

>>
>>72129104
what bass? post a pic from the side so I can see the neck
>>
>>72129545
Yeah they can be really inconsistent with their build quality, it doesn't help that they're going up in price now as well, which is something I partially blame folks like Mac Demarco and Ry Cooder for. I bought mine from a Cash Converters for about £80, but I've seen them go for twice that on eBay, and even more for the two pickup variant. I personally think it ruins the charm because whilst these sorts of guitars look and sound quirky they have some of the worst build quality. I genuinely can't stand the neck on this Jedson (or it might just be the string spacing, I have no clue desu), and I can't do much about intonation either due to the bridge just being a solid lump of metal, which is why I use it for stuff like this.

If you can find one dirt cheap go for it, but you'll have to scour a lot of pawn shops. It might be a lot easier if you live in the States, but here in the UK the market for stuff like this is virtually nonexistant.
>>
How difficult is it nowadays to create an original piece in 4/4 without resorting to 9ths etc?
>>
>>72129674
>This much effort on being a shitstain and not improving your instruments/playing
I think the guy is doing alright. Mods like this + quality hardware can only raise the resale value if the guitar was only $150 to begin with, assuming you know how to set it up nicely.

So far the neck still feels solid. As far as I know it is glued from all the sides so I don't think it would come off that easily for just reshaping the part where your hand plays.
>Will i risk it if i do the same thing on my $600 les paul?
-Will I risk IT?
Unless it has binding, probably not, read above.
-Will I risk my money?
YES. Do it only if you never plan to resell it.

Always wait until you need a string change to do mods.

Baritone here, I know just how you feel. Pretty much every band is off limits unless I go falsetto or lower the octave but fuck that. If that's what you want to do, go for it. Actual success depends on how you network, promote, play, work, everything. It's hard even if you're awesome. That's why people who graduated from Berklee or went through a conservatory get work as teachers.

Getting a big break is different though. Might as well not think about it. Just work as hard as you can. Play as much as you can. Get PAYED for playing as much as you can. Meet as many people as possible. If you make it, great. Otherwise you're doing what you love even if you're poor as shit. If that's not the case, don't even try.

>>
>>72133490
I don't want to be presumptuous since I don't know where you're at ability wise and I'm far from being a qualified professional but...

The best thing you can do is just practice a bunch. Never stop. Learn your theory. Get a band together and have fun. Don't wait too long to start playing with other musicians. Once you have some original songs start playing gigs and don't let up. You don't want to lose momentum as a band if you are serious. Never be satisfied with the status quo. If you aren't having fun anyways, you're doing it wrong.

I'm assuming a standard band set up here. There are lots of other paths out there for a musician and they will differ. None of them will get you a "comfortable" living.

I just started playing guitar about a month ago and I was wondering If anyone can help, I can play basic scales and chords but I just don't know what songs to practice that will get me better.

So far I really only know basic riffs. My most recent is carry on my wayward son and I can basically play sweet child o mine. I fuck up here and there on that though.

As for chord stuff I can only play good riddance but I know about 10 chords.

tl;dr I'm a beginner what should I practice/focus on?
>>
>>72135225
Just learn a variety of songs. Certain genres like bluegrass will emphasize certain skills. Music written for solo guitar or guitar + vocals is a very good choice.
>>
>>72135225
I can't really give any songs in particular, but whatever song you play, try to familiarize yourself with the scale that song is played in and each note you might use in that song/scale. Knowledge of the notes and the structure thereof will help you start to better learn music itself, which will help you learn the guitar conceptually as you do finger training exercises.

Well, I have an SX J and I put noiseless classic stacks in it. They sound really great, and very much like a classic fender tone. I get a lot of compliments on my tone, even though I play straight into a solid state PA amp. I'm not sure what I'd put in the P, depends the sort of sound you want. caliguitar makes some cool pickups but I haven't heard many demos. personally, I don't like the classic P sound, but luckily many people don't so there are quite a few nontraditional pickups out there.

Gimme a while to look some pickup demos up. Also, are you the guy with the vintage white PJ? can you post a pic?

You might try putting a dimarzio ceramic model p or a cali neodymium power plant in the P position. That should give you a very strong Rickenbacker vibe. Ricks are around 33", but that does make an impression. On the other hand you essentially now have two bridge pickups, but hey, EQ can do anything. If you do that, you might have some issues with the P being too loud. Well, you could always keep in the P you have in now, it is ceramic after all. But I think the model P/powerplant sounds a bit nicer. If anybody else makes a copy of the model P that's lower output, you could pair it with a hot stack in the bridge and still have balanced output.

Take a plastic sack and put it on the Machine head with a rubber band. Dust can fuck up your gear ratio.

DO NOT USE POWER TOOLS. Sand the neck where you play and then test the feel, test it often

Since youlle likely be removing finish in areas you will at least need a sealer to keep the neck from sponging too much humidty, tung oil works nice

Also tak a 400gr sand paper and "rough up" the neck, this will increase playability greatly

Good luck

>>

It probably will, but don't set the pickups too close to the strings. That's what amateurs do and it's A Bad Thing. It throws off your intonation and the pull of the magnets creates unwanted effects like deadening the string vibration and introducing odd "wolf tone" harmoinics if you take it too close.
>>

Thanks.
>>

Fender publish a list of recommended spacings for various pickups, just google recommended string height for whatever pickup you have. If one pickup is still drastically quieter than the other then it's possible it's sustained some damage, throw it in the trash and buy a new one.

if it sounds like there's a bit of distortion through my hot rod on the clean channel, does that mean one of the preamp tubes is fucked?

what does that even mean

Yeah, or there could be something wrong with anything in your entire signal chain.

Hope that narrows it down.
>>
>>72139540
I really like the two strats behind the telecaster. Great colors.

The tele is pretty cool too despite the binding.
>>
>>72139755
You have a good eye my man. 2005 HSS Strat in sienna sunburst and a partscaster in metallic aquamarine with Fender SCN pickups. The Tele is beautiful beyond description, a 1987 MIJ with the radius planed to 9.5 inches and big stainless steel frets installed.

unf. I would love to play those. I've got a 1984 Tokai tele copy that is pretty similar to what you've got. Such a great guitar. Same radius neck but vintage frets and one piece flame maple.

I'll have to keep an eye out for a metallic aquamarine guitar. Very unique color.

>>72139870
I don't know why I don't love binding on telecasters. I like binding on other instruments. I don't think they look bad but it's not my preference. To me, the tele is a wood plank to go crazy on. They're simple and solid. I guess frills look weird on them to me because of that. It is a very pretty tele though.

I have that issue too. Tone Zone in the bridge, Air Norton in the neck. I did raise the pickup a bit but it didn't help much. I think the Air Norton is just a less hot pickup so it's going to be a bit quieter. It's really nice for clean tones, but the gain drop is kind of annoying for distorted leads, especially for playing live.
>>
>>72139917
Not usually a fan of bindings on Fender stuff but this thing is bitchin
>>
>>72139928
>but the gain drop is kind of annoying for distorted leads, especially for playing live.
My problem exactly, live or not I never play the neck pickup because I barely hear myself.
Still sounds good tho.

You do know all the tubes in the world today are only made in three factories right?

>>72139922
I'm a sucker for metallic finishes on Strats. This one's my pimpest partscaster, FSR body, US Standard neck, Shawbucker and two Fat 50s.
>>
>>72139939
>I never play the neck pickup because I barely hear myself
Damn, my case isn't that extreme. Sounds like there's might be something wrong with the pickup then. For me the only thing is legato parts start dropping out a little bit if I'm not careful to put in the extra force
>>
>>72139941
I meant that the owner changed to tubes to his liking and has been doing so for the past 10 years or so, not that he had them made specially for him.
>>
>>72139917
hnnnnnnng

Mine's almost exactly the same, but with a rosewood neck. The only shame is that it's got the contoured back, so it only has a binding on the front edge.

>>72140285
Also I meant to say maple neck, obviously.

Not as nice as yours but here's mine. I was going to swap the pickguard to white but I never did and now I really like the black guard. Was going to swap the pickups too but I ended up really liking the way the stock ones compress.

Yeah. Everything is stock except upgraded pots and a new cap. The guitar body is pretty much lower end (you can see it's a 3 piece body) so it didn't get the totally accurate 3 saddle tele bridge.

The baja tele is cool I hope you get a lot of use out of it. Very versatile.
>>
>>72140636
Just let 'em be dirty.
>>
>>72140694
No, I always see videos of players with old as fuck busted guitars like Frusciante or McCready but the frets are good as new

>>72140684
actual fenders body are made of 2 and 3 pieces

a single piece body would be different from fenders and

some say it sound different than the stabilished fender sound because of that

Mike McCready is great
>>
>>72140714
Stainless steel frets stay bright as lot longer, they don't tarnish like nickel silver and they clean up a lot easier
>>
>>72140743
so why you fucking bother with your guitar being 3 piece and bothering not put a 3 saddle bridge because of that?
>>
>>72140761
It's got compensated saddles, intonation's pretty damned good too
>>
>>72140720
Neat. I figured it was supposed to be 2 piece but they went with 3 piece to save some money. I don't know specifically which model they based the copy on. I just know it's a 50's design.
>>
>>72140736
So how do I clean the frets
>>
>>72140799
leave the neck in a bucket of warm soapy water overnight then clean it with a wire brush and Dettol
>>
>>72140813
Alright thanks
>>
>>72140799
mask off your fretboard and go over the frets with a metal polish paste, buff with a cloth. Autosol and Flitz are good brands.
>>
>>72140813
lol leaving it on water will fuck the shit up

>>72140799
with a toothbrush
>>
>>72140843
This is correct. I usually don't use a special cleaner on mine but if yours are bad you might need to.
>>
>>72140827
don't do that senpai.

Because they have guitar techs, who are paid to go over their guitars before they are handed back.
>>
>>72140799
I clean my fretboard when I change my strings. So while all the strings are off, I use a pick to gently scrape off the worst muck (I use fairly soft ones) and then use a toothbrush and/or soft lint-free cloth to wipe the rest off.
>>
>>72140878
a pick? does it work? why no just rub a toothbrush with strenght
>>
>>72140799
run a hot soldering iron tip across the frets, gets them cleaner than any polish

That's a weird fucking guitar. I'm assuming you've got it spec'd up exactly how you like it?

I'll be doing a warmoth/partscaster build eventually as well.
>>
>>72140887
Because you need less strength for the pick, reducing the tendency to get wanker's cramp when you're cleaning 24 frets thoroughly.

>>72140933
TL;DW
>>
>>72140964
whats "weird" about it bedsides the added middle pickup

>>72140729
cool, dude
why you chosen a lipstick pickup for the middle position instead of a regular single coil
does it not sound muddy because its closer to the bridge?
>>
>>72140964
The only really weird things are the extra pickup and the 4-pole switch so I get pickup combinations like this:

1 - bridge only
2 - bridge + middle
3 - bridge + neck
4 - middle + neck
5 - neck only

So it's classic Tele sounds in 1, 3 and 5 then the Strat conbinations in 2 and 4

Oh, yeah it's not super weird. The pickup arrangement makes sense. I didn't mean to exaggerate. It just looks kinda weird. The neck not matching is the biggest thing I guess. It's not as bad as that guitar with like 5 pickups that gets posted here every so often.

THAT is a weird fucking guitar.

I've been learning some Pink Floyd songs such as Pigs on the Wing, Fat Old Sun, and Mother. All have pretty basic chords (some barre chords in some parts) and have a smooth flow. It also really helps to be able to sing along with them to get the feel for where the chord/ your voice needs to be for harmony.
>>
>>72141049
FACT: no guitar needs more than three regular pickups

The middle pickup worked really well, position two sounds unbelievably good. Really pleased with that mod but the 4-pole switch was a bitch to solder up and still get it to fit in the control rout.

>>
>>72141075
Yeah I bet. When I do my first build I'm not going to do any special circuits or mods. I'm going to try and keep it simple because I'm sure I'll have issues just doing that anyways.

I'm thinking of doing a semi-hollow tele with p90s. Still mulling it over though.

>>72141113

Well yeah, it's not a Strat sound and it's not quite a Tele sound. But it's a good sound nonetheless.
