The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

hey all, I needed money to pay for my car insurance since I'm unemployed and looking for work, so I whipped up a full length album using some of my old tape loops. enough people bought it from bandcamp that I'm no longer in danger of losing my insurance, so I'm releasing it here

Quite good! His guitar playing and style are very versatile and though a lot of the songs seem cut from the same cloth, they all have something unique to take out. Good genuine voice too, though the lyrics aren't particularly daring. I'd definitely recommend it though.

It's solid but kind of a weak effort by Cohen's standards imo. There's some awesome tracks though, like "The Guests", "The Gypsy's Wife" and "Ballad of the Absent Mare". Just has this weird... romantic vibe on a few tracks that I didn't like idk.

Worth a listen imo

perfect prescription is a little too same-y for me the whole way through. it's been a little while since i listened to it, but the heights of perfect prescription (call the doctor, transparent radiation) imo don't come close to the best songs on playing with fire (so hot, honey, come down softly to my soul which are all 10/10s). i don't think the longer tracks on playing w/ fire are as good as those, but i still think they have enough energy to be good additions

This chart was tight! Found some great music on here

Paris - The Devil Made Me Do It
>Political Hip-Hop, West Coast Hip-Hop

I knew Paris was a hardcore rapper, I just didn’t know how much so. Dude is Black Panther and throws together clips of Malcolm X and other leaders to reinforce his political beliefs. It reminds me a lot of Public Enemy, with its fair share of critiques of the government, US culture and all that. Production wise, it’s kind of the opposite though, with chilled out, almost spacey beats that sound more like Marley Marl than the Bomb Squad. Sounds more like an East Coast record in some ways.

I also didn’t expect him Paris to be this good of a rapper. He sounds surprisingly modern, with a tighter more concise flow than a lot of guys at this time. For ‘90, he sounds kind of ahead of the curve in my book, even though you can tell it’s not quite the same style. He has some great lyrics, all harsh and biting remarks - he’s just straight up angry.

If you want some nice political hip-hop, check this out, it’s worth a shot.

>DJ Screw - Chapter 070 - Endonesia
god damn that opener, and the two tracks that follow. some of the best screw out there. after that it kinda takes a small dip in quality (still good, just not as brilliant) until the last three tracks come. he starts chopping and screwing the tracks a lot more than what i've heard in the other tracks, which was a welcome addition to the screw aesthetic.

what next? is there anything relaxing or "chill" left in this chart because i could use something to soothe myself or at least pipe down

Okay, time to start my new chart.

[1/2]

Yes - Fragile
>Progressive Rock

I’m not a prog guy but this is something else. “Roundabout” is one of coolest fucking rock songs I’ve heard, it’s really a terrific start to the album. The organ soloing is awesome and shouldn’t fit in this well on a rock song. The bassline is killer too, my god.

“Cans and Brahms” is a bit dated but hey, these guys threw a mini little classical piece in the mix and it works. It’s barely over a minute and a half so I think it’s nice to have in here. “South Side of the Sky” is a fantastic mix between little jazzy time changes and a rockier atmosphere. I don’t think many people pull this kind of style off very well but something about this just works. Once again, Chris Squire rips it up on the bass, keeping the first half booming with energy. Those riffs are just so energetic but tight as hell. It gradually winds into a few different suites, which all work surprisingly well. Everything flows brilliantly, I don’t know how they manage to transition from something rockier, to a mellow passage back to rock, without feeling clunky. Same goes with “Long Distance Runaround”.

Also - something about this record feels incredibly fresh and clean. I’m not someone who ever notices poor mixing or great recording quality - but this feels like a prime example of how to do it right. The bass booms but doesn’t overwhelm any of the other elements, the organ slinks around in the background until it needs to be the focal point of the music. Even the little wind samples they use sounds crisp. Something about the guitar tone always sounds so sharp. I’m not sure if it’s the musicians themselves, the recording quality, post-production or what. Regardless, it makes this album stand out in a good way.

Not a controversial opinion but I think this strikes a perfect balance in prog. The band meshes rock with other influences and don’t go into too many long-winded asides. Close to the Edge seemed to go on these wandering passages that I couldn’t stand - this pretty much avoids it outside of maaaaybe the closer.

Fantastic

it seems you weren't as keen on the closer as the other tracks, but isn't that opening riff just the best?

and i definitely agree with how Fragile overcomes the typical meandering side of prog. it's one of the best sequenced albums i've ever heard, long tracks in the beginning, middle, and end, and little interludes in between that give the album room to breathe.
>>
>>71749695
Oh yeah, Heart of the Sunrise is still a really solid track. The opening riff is awesome and there's some nice passages throughout. It just overstays its welcome a bit, idk.

Suicidal Tendencies - Suicidal Tendencies (1983)
>hardcore punk, skate punk

Really meatheaded album with some kinda hilariously broad suicide references. There are probably hundreds of better hardcore albums that beat how generic and predictable this is, but the guitar work is nice and it's decently fun. The vocalist is awesomely over the top, especially on the classic "Instituionalized", where he screams his heart out about how he wants "just one Pepsi". The tempo changes on this track coupled with it's interesting delivery make it the only really fresh-sounding track on the album, the rest is really standard stuff that you could find being done better on hundreds of other records.

Ciberpajé - Entranhas do sol (2017)
>tribal ambient, spoken word

Effectively creates a pretty spooky atmosphere some of the time, but it's also far too thin-sounding to envelop the listener in the way that it wants too, and the synth lines are all cheesy as hell. This artist has a lot of potential, as does this style, but it's not fully realized here.

Amir Khan - Raga Hansdhwani, Raga Malkauns (1970)
>khyal

Like triangle said, really hypnotic stuff. The vocals are very scratchy and raw, and while sometimes the more prolonged notes show Khan's vocal flaws a bit /too/ much, they convey a whole lot of passion and emotion, which is really important in music like this. The tampura drones are pretty par for the course with music like this, but they fit the vocals perfectly, and the real star of the show is of course the raw, emotional, incredible vocals. Great album.

The Harmonys - Cats Are My Friends (2005)
>contemporary folk, twee pop, american primitivism

Endearing little album, but infuriatingly simple and twee, and I generally love me some twee. The vocals seem to try as hard to be as cute as possible, but they end up being a bit affected and overly cloying, and the poppier songs fall into a lot of the same traps, and above all they're just not very memorable. The light primitivism exercises are really nice though, it's cool to see a very simple, stripped-down take on the genre. An album in that style would be real cool, but what we're left with is an admittedly cute, endearing album that's just too damn simple to make a mark.

Ema-bug-moubus-piano - Mouse Eats Bug (2017)
>denpa, experimental

This is a damn fun little EP. I don't know anything about denpa, and given the fact that it's about moe I'm glad I don't know anything about it, but it seems to be a very dancey, synth-heavy, chiptune-based genre, and what's presented here is a near total deconstruction of this genre, complete with stuttering, almost industrial-tinged beats and ambient sections. It doesn't always work, but it makes for a hell of an exhilirating, fun ten minutes. One of my favorites of the year so far.

3.0

Booji Boys - Booji Boys (2017)
>garage punk, lo-fi indie, noise rock

The sound is great, that's for damn sure. The muddy, feedback-laden production gives the album a lot of character and grit, and it compliments the immediacy and breakneck pace of the album very well. Songwriting wise, it's typical stuff. Most songs are in the same vein as a lot of other noisy pop punk artists around nowadays (think Wavves or FIDLAR), which is a bit of an inherently uninteresting musical style. Take away the production and the walls of feedback and you don't have much, but these elements are really, /really/ great additions that elevate this to being a pretty decently solid thrill ride of an album.

Iron Maiden - Powerslave
>Heavy Metal

I’m not quite sure how to feel about this record. The music itself is pretty tight, with nice shrieking riffs from the guitar, pounding drums and - man some fantastic bass. Just like on Fragile, I couldn’t help focus on the bass on some songs, it just crashes through every track and has the coolest tone. There’s a bit of a proggy feel, with tracks like “Losfer Words” and the final two cuts rambling on in extended solos, time changes, all that kinda stuff.

The singing though - I’m not too sure. The vocalist has a very 80s sounding voice, with that kind of shrill tone piercing through the tracks. At times, it adds to the energy - but it gets too corny for me at times. If the vocals on here had been a bit better, I think it would be a significantly better album. Also - the lyrics are pretty hit or miss. I know most metal focuses on demonic or creepy kind of stuff but I couldn’t get into it this time. Maybe I’m being hypocritical though because hip-hop has the same thing and I usually praise it for the exact same. I dunno though.

I think the combination of elements wasn’t quite for me. The music itself has very nice moments, with the first two tracks and “The Village” standing out. And you can tell these guys know what they’re doing. But the vocals/lyrics and sometimes wandering tone are both negatives and they’re a huge part of what makes this album…. this album. It’s a weird combination of elements that doesn’t work as well as I was anticipating. Still enjoyable though.

Queen - A Night At the Opera
>Hard Rock, Glam Rock

I don’t think I’d categorize this as hard rock at all. This is pretty much the glammiest album I’ve heard, so I don’t get the RYM label. It makes absolutely no sense that this should be roped in the same category as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

Genre discussion aside, this is kind of a weird style. Queen always felt like they tried really hard to “rock out” but they also wanted this smooth, approachable style of music. Buuut they also wanted to sound artsy so they’re stuck in this middle ground where they actually don’t do much of any of them. It’s like small bursts of each style pop up through their music but it’s never cohesive enough to be one style. Ugh.

On here, there’s “rockin” tracks like “Death on Two Legs” (even that has a little piano), a folksy little number in “39” (out of nowhere) and of course the whole baroque, proggy thing on “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Everything on this album feels kind of overblown and overdone, which I guess is the point - but I’m not too big on it. So not only does it manage to be hit or miss, it also goes way too over the top. There’s no distinct tone due to the variety of styles they try to tackle but it also manages to be cohesively glossy and bleh. It’s in the weirdest, worst musical rut.
>>
>>71753218
[2/2]

Besides a few tracks, like “You’re My Best Friend”, “Love of My Life” and obviously “Bohemian Rhapsody”, nothing seems to stand out in any way or another. “I’m In Love With My Car” is a track I’ve kind of returned to a fair amount but it honestly isn’t too great and still manages to spoil the mood and sound clunky on a hit-or-miss tracklisting. Mercury had a great voice regardless of the actual song quality, it manages to shine through. And these guys are solid musicians. But this album ultimately doesn’t add up to much. Like, what is that two minute a capella garbage on “The Prophet’s Song”? Jeeeez. Oh hey, but they played “God Save the Queen” at the end so it’s an epic right?

I think so much of this album’s reputation is because of “Bohemian Rhapsody”, which is a still a great track in my book - I always forget that it’s super entertaining. It gets painted as this feat of music, which I guess just happens when a band gets as big as Queen. Oh well, shit happens.

So frustrating.

I've got an assignment due today that I'm writing about critical theory as a research method, and every single piece of information I get from it makes me sort of angry really. Basically what I'm reading says that critical theory is more or less the same as a constructivist approach to qualitative research, except it doesn't matter at all that you have a lot of biases - indeed, it's actually based around those biases. It's all about going into a research question with a preconceived notion of who is oppressed/privileged in the situation and then working from that to change that power relationship. So it doesn't even care if your preconceived notion is wrong, it's just about changing the power relationship that may or may not be there at all.

Fuck critical theory.
>>
>>71754118
>Criticalists take values a step further than constructivists in thatthey admittedly hope and expect their value biases to influence theresearch process and outcome. More specifically, because criticaltheory concerns itself with unequal distributions of power and theresultant oppression of subjugated groups, a preset goal of theresearch is to empower participants to transform the status quo andemancipate themselves from ongoing oppression.

I mean come the fuck on.

>Jandek - New Orleans Monday

Last June I finished Jandek’s studio discography with Ghost Passing. A 6 CD affair of a piano and a theremin performer. Both played by Houston most famous outsider couple Sterling and Sheila Smith.

New Orleans Monday is yet another conversation between the two performers on their instruments. Once again, the conversation works much better than a monologue because Sterling’s piano playing seems to have a purpose and doesn’t just wander around.

The magic of Ghost Passing was it its’ gorgeous lyrical passage hidden in the middle of the lengthy piece. It honestly redeemed the length of the piece. Here? Nothing to see here other than the musical conversation I spoke about prior.

It’s a nice thing to have in the background and THANK GOD it is not 6 hours long, but even 1 hour of this seems to be a bit too much sometimes. Meh.

>Neil Young + Crazy Horse - Arc
When I saw this record my imagination started running wild. Neil Young does experimental noise rock?! Comparisons to Keiji Haino?! Sadly it doesn't quite live up to expectations though, I wanted Young's typical solos drenched in noise and stretched out over 30 minutes but what I got was just noise really. It's enjoyable and there are nice parts but it sounds a bit like a bunch of tacked together live interludes where the drummer bangs about and they let the guitars feedback. With a bit of Neil's guitar wank it could have been so much more. 3+/5

>Keiji Haino - Koko
Super dreamy. Not much noise here but the gentle strumming is just lovely and the drone ending is great. I like this atmospheric Haino as much as the noisy one. 4/5

How about this for a cover

looks purty. I like this, but it needs a more vibrant duotone.
>>

>>
>>71759406
duotone is just when there's two (technically three) tones to the image: black and whatever other color you'd like to use. In this instance you've chosen a sepiat-tinted gray, which is fine but I'd like a more vibrant color instead.

>Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me

Reviews of this have tended to focus on thematic content with little talk of the music itself outside of mentioning sparse instrumentation, but thematic content is all-encompassing here, so fine. The circumstances are well-known by now, but there's also not as much to grasp onto musically for those familiar with Mount Eerie's previous work. But we'll take Phil Elverum himself at his word; "This new album is barely music."

A note on "sparse instrumentation": if it were true for Phil's earlier albums, it's especially true here. Per usual, he gently strums a guitar throughout, backed by a muted digital drum track and bass. The point is clear: overwhelmingly at the forefront is Phil's voice. It's one of his strong suits as a musician--it's not some technically great or even good voice, but it does indeed have this disarmingly ego-less human quality to it in how it strains for only modestly higher notes with some modest arrangement and production to match. "Quaintness" is a nice word to describe it. It's relatable, approachable, and often comfortably flawed and solitary. His role here is as a storyteller, and he's closer to speaking than ever.

Notable is a similar format that the tracks follow. With few exceptions, the songs stay within a limited melodic range and employ these characteristically unsatisfying, unresolved melodies that recycle through various iterations. Take for instance "Seaweed". It's a sweet Grouper-like melody for the first minute up until the jarringly un-sweet minor-chord chorus of "I can't remember; were you into Canada geese?" There are plenty examples throughout--in about every song, for that matter. Many of the songs end--most notably in this vein--mid-thought with a minor refrain. The point is clear, but one can't help but feel that the unsatisfying melodies are just that.
>>
>>71759972
Which isn't to say this format is universal. "Ravens," for example, is beautifully arranged, and certainly the melodic highlight. Not incidentally, it's also the most structured song with multiple composed fingerpicked patterns, distinguishable sections, and a memorable longing melody. "Real Death" is another notable highlight. It's a mostly-straightforward melody without gimmick, but it's more notable for the Knausgaard-esque plainly stated story about his wife ordering a backpack for their son before she passed away--admittedly an otherwise-pedestrian story--but it's set to the most dramatic, human moment of epiphany in the album.

This is indeed music, so there must be some sort of symbiosis between theme and composition. A lot of people have already compared this album to Benji, Carrie and Lowell, and Skeleton Tree--the other 2010's albums overshadowed by the circumstances of a death in the family. I would venture to say that all of those albums have something that A Crow Looked at Me doesn't, however. A certain degree of melodic variation from track-to-track, some dynamic range, a discernable arc with some semblance of self-reflection outside of Phil's general numbness at his situation. Moreover, an expression of something. This feels more like an expresssion of expressionlessness. I get it, the readers may be jumping out their seat to tell me that this is all the point and that to hope for anything remotely dramatically satisfying is idiosyncratic, to which I say ok.

Rarely do I listen to an album that's 2 hours long and want to listen to it again. This album is absolutely hypnotic. It kept reminding me of Hash Jar Tempo (probably because theyre both psych-drones), but this album kicks their ass to the moon and back. I loved the heavy krautrock feel of this. Every song is so rhythmic tribal. I especially love the flute playing and the electric cello playing. Plus, this was late 60s!

seriously, those P's and S's were raping my ears. easily the most important part of recording vocals, well besides a microphone.

Get some effects pedals or something better to record with, a lot of times the guitar distortion sounds digitally made, like you played around with the leveler and compressor in Audacity (bingo?).

lyrics were great, your voice is fantastic, other than that and some of the tracks not really being my thing at all, it was a pretty solid album.

Jethro Tull - Aqualung
>Progressive Rock

Okay, here’s another prog album that mostly lives up to its overinflated reputation. I’d actually heard a fair share of this before too, which probably helped. The title track kicks this off really well, with that flute soloing blending in way better than it should. Maybe it’s a bit cheesy but the fact that these guys can make something so steeped in rock influence, while also throwing in that flute is a win in my book. Been said before but it’s such a unique blend.

Side one is cool, mostly dominated by folkier tracks with “Cross Eyed Mary” serving as a great second track, “Cheap Day Return” is a nice little interlude and “Mother Goose” is a weirdly Medieval sounding cut. The flutes and overall orchestral arrangements add to the experience, with little touches like hand drumming only adding to the atmosphere. Like Nat said about Fragile earlier - this is really well sequenced too. The interludes pop in after lengthier cuts, which helps break up the experience into more manageable chunks.

Side two has a different feel, with a lot more religious themes and bombastic cuts. “My God” is the longest on here by a slight margin, clocking in at over 7 minutes. It’s a bit over the top for me, with shrieking guitar solos, lots of flute and even a brief choir bit. Still an entertaining track but it’s kind of what I don’t like about Thick As a Brick, with some passages feeling a little unnecessary. “Hymn 43” and “Locomotive Breath” are both fantastic and the other two cuts on here are solid as well.

It’s hard to say why this works better than a lot of prog albums. I guess it’s mostly more accessible and less meandering. The flute and orchestral elements blend shockingly well and everything on here is pretty catchy.

Barry Helafonte - Neon Beach (2017)
>sequencer & MIDI

An incredibly simplistic album, almost to a fault. It mostly consists of MIDI synth noodling that's very reminiscent of a lot of older video games and TV shows, and I really enjoy the sound, but the compositions are pretty barebones. The simplicity fits the vibe of the music well but some tracks seem lazy and half-baked. The light house elements are a great touch, they're done well and they break up the monotony of the purely synth-based tracks. Despite my complaints, it's a solid little record.

Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
>Heavy Metal

Kind of the same opinion I have of Powerslave, except this is slightly less proggy. Dickinson’s vocals are growing on me ever so slightly, though I still think it’s a big weakness in the music. The shrill, piercing quality is a bit much for me, it sounds too aggressively 80s, I dunno.

Once again, the music itself is surprisingly tight. The bass is bouncing all over this thing, the riffs are heavy and repetitive and the drums are pounding. It’s fairly straight forward metal but there’s also a hint toward prog. Not in the same way as Powerslave but there’s little tempo shifts and weird riffs that kind of remind me of it. Though the little ascending/descending riff (how else do I describe it) on “Children of the Damned” feels unnecessary and clunky. The standouts are also great, with the title track and “Run to the Hills” probably being the best ones. The little vocal samples are also also great, I'm a sucker for that kinda stuff.

The whole vocal performance drags this down a bit in my book. Okay lyrics also, I dunno. It either isn’t my style or it needs to grow on me after some time. I feel like I should be skiing in an 80s movie.

Surprisingly entertaining but certainly not without its weaknesses.

>The Jesus and Mary Chain - Damage and Joy
No surprises here. They've not brought the Psychocandy wall of fuzz back and they're writing decent to good songs that owe a lot to The Velvet Underground and 60s pop. I didn't expect them to reinvent the wheel but it is their weakest yet, there's not one fantastic JAMC song here, it's all just good. A lot of the lyrics aren't great. They should have used that organ a lot more. It's a bit long too, there are far too many average tracks here, trim them and the album would be a lot more enjoyable. I'm obviously a big fan though so even average JAMC is still good to me. 3+/5

>Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - Deja Vu
What a load of hippy BULLSHIT! Young's songs (Helpless and Country Girl) are pretty good but the rest ranges from average to terrible, cheesy fucking folk rock and even cheesier lyrics about peace, love, not cutting your hair, letting your freak flag fly, yeah man! When compared with Young's introspective songwriting it's just embarassing. 2.5-/5

>Кaзмa-Кaзмa [Kazma Kazma] - Пляcки тpyбaдypoв
It's a bit goofy at times with the weird instrumentation like flutes and horns but this is pretty cool folky post-punk. I don't really know how to describe it, definitely weird. 3.5-/5

>JFA - Blatant Localism EP
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 nostalgia innit. Beach Blanket Bong-out is THE song here, and it's just great fast, snotty skate punk. 4/5

>Dogwander - The Exalted Garden
Really good stuff. Said it already but I'm really liking Lion Tamer, it's the strongest vocal and lyrical performance of them all imo and the quiet guitar works really well with your voice. The couple of louder and more droney parts of the album didn't work quite as well as your quiet, more ambient parts for me but it's all good, that 3 track run of Filth in My Mind, Lion Tamer and Darkness Moves are probably the best. Nice job man. 3.5/5
