The point of these threads is to critically analyse musical traditions from all over the world, including the western pop canon, and perform discourse on the topic. This discourse shapes what is allowed to be discussed and who is allowed to take part. As a shibboleth against lowbrows, the highest caliber of dank memes is used as communication. By doing this, we can create a utopia for true music lovers and colonise the planet, solar system, and galaxy. Every single utterance here is broadcast wirelessly, somewhere, some time, and will as such be launched into the infinity of space.

Fun fact: pedophilia is condoned by Islam through both the Qur'an directly, and Muslim scholars as well as religious leaders. This is practiced in many countries, particularly ones where the majority population is Muslim.

First one starts this weekend, so have something by Friday or Saturday I guess. If you pick it Sunday afternoon not a lot of people will have time to listen to the record really.
Ideally something not everybody has heard already (and not too shitty either) but you can pick anything actually.
If it's on youtube or soundcloud or any place that you can stream through plug.dj we'll have a listenalong of the listenalong record (duh) at 15:00 GMT on Sunday. Otherwise people just download the record and listen to it, or maybe somebody uploads it to yt for the listenalong like it has been done some other time.

Woo, almost through this chart.

Nick Cave - Tender Prey

Haven’t dug this guy’s style so far and this didn’t really change it. The first few songs are really solid, managing to mix bluesy stuff with more menacing sounding post-punk. It seems like he’s trying too hard to sound evil though, I think he polishes up the act better on Let Love In. Nice moments but not exactly my thing.

2.5/5

The Byrds - Mr Tambourine Man

The jangly guitar is just great and these guys really know how to make a catchy song. The title track is obviously classic and actually makes me pretty nostalgic. My dad used to have a Byrds Greatest Hits tape that he played and that was definitely my favorite. Anyway, consistently solid, I’m really becoming a sucker for this whole 60s style.

3/5

The Byrds - Fifth Dimension

The whole psych/space rock doesn’t really work for these guys. There’s a handful of good ideas, like the sampling on “2-4-2 Foxtrot”. There’s also some nice moments on tracks like “Eight Miles High” and “Mr Spaceman”. Ultimately, it isn’t anything special and their version of “Hey Joe” is also awful.

2.5

Young Gangstas - Pre-Meditated Gangsterism

I always expected New Orleans rap to be more of an equal balance between west coast and Memphis influences but it always leans heavily to the west. I guess it’s b/c Master P is from the Bay and he brings a lot of those ideas into the mix in No Limit. This is more Southern sounding to me than usual, which I loved. There’s a lot of those creepy 3 6 sounding beats with the occasional whining synth - a great combo. The rappers themselves are entertaining, rapping about some hardcore shit but the beats ensure they don’t sound too cheesy. This style sounds a lot like a musical version of a psychological thriller, with all this talk of mental health and psych wards and all that creepy stuff. I love the balance it strikes, this is one of the cooler gangsta rap albums I’ve managed to find.

Shuggie Otis - Inspiration Information (1974)
>psychedelic soul

I seem to have the exact opposite opinion on this that most people have. Most people seem to take the a-side over the b-side, as both sides are split evenly between different styles. The a-side is the soul with Otis' vocals, and the b-side is instrumental, kinda easy listening music. I really don't like the soul that much, mainly because Otis' is /not/ a good soul vocalist, at all. The instrumentals are also kinda flat. They're chill, but they're very light and nonthreatening, which isn't what I look for in soul or funk at all. The b-side is some real cool spacy elevator music instrumentals. Think of Booker T. & the M.G.'s if they were a lot cooler and they had some badass drum machines. Otis' greatness as a multi-instrumentalist is really prominent on these tracks, and the primitive drum machine makes them feel truly psychedelic, unlike the more flaccid psychedelia on the a-side.

How was your day /daily/?

Went through some records I found in my Dad's basement. Not much of interest, I did get a weird promo LP of The Downward Spiral and a couple other things (he apparently had a PiL Metal Box his friend gave to him as a gift but I couldn't find it). I'm saving up for a Pro-Ject so I can actually use them, as the turntable that he had is beyond saving (rest of his old stuff works great, barring some scuffs). I've been checking Craigslist for a nice used table and all I see is a sea of Crosleys.

We also found a shitload of old demos and bootlegs of random old local punk/metal/whatever bands he taped, I might rip them if I ever get a half decent deck. Would anyone be interested in that? They're almost certainly bad.

I'm probably going to listen to Yamir's album now

Autechre - Confield (2001)
>IDM, experimental

Why did I put these guys off for so long? I really don't think better production exists on record, this is the dictionary definition of a "headphone album". Tri repetae, out there as it is, still has a very obvious base in dance music and techno. Booth and Brown completely eschew this influence here, opting instead to make an album that sounds more like Ryoji Ikeda than Aphex Twin. Some shades of incredibly deconstructed beats are still here, and I'll admit that the tracks like this are probably my favorite over the ultra experimental tracks (which, in all their experimentation, come off as a bit /too/ calculated), but they've got both styles down and they mix them together to create an incredibly surreal, intense album.

3.0+

Man Is the Bastard - Sum of the Men: "The Brutality Continues..." (1996)
>powerviolence, sludge metal

Another album today with a very obvious divide between the first and second halves. More standard sludge metal takes up the first half, and it's awesome. It's so damn heavy, and the fat bass work is immaculate. The second half is when the power electronics are brought in, and it's not nearly as good. Like a lot of power electronics, it seems pointlessly, vapidly provacative, screeched vocals and all. Doesn't take away from the goodness of the first half, but the compilation as a whole is really hurt by the second half.

2.5+

Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock & Jack DeJohnette - Changeless (1989)
>post-bop, ECM style jazz

Jarrett is by far the driving force behind this whole album, his piano work swallows every single piece whole and it's incredibly hypnotic and beautiful. Peacock and DeJohnette provide affable backing, but Jarrett still completely overtakes them. I'd definitely prefer if the other musicians get some weight in the sound, because Jarrett's playing can be a bit too much after a while, but this is great nonetheless.

hi i'm an rym noob i have 400 ratings most of which are in the top 500 rated and yet i have a perfect curve wew look at my beautiful curve haha wow thats what its supposed to always look like regardless of the quality of albums i listen to hah i only listened to the 1 highest rated album from a well regarded musician and gave it a 2.5 to perfect my curve lol i have no idea how normal distributions work but it makes me fit in on a thread on a board on a website about another website haha

Sounds neat, you should slowly listen to them all and rip the ones that are dope, especially if you can't find them anywhere. I have a handful of 90's punk 7" I might rip some day; can't even find the artist for some of them.
As for my day: just got annihilated on a midterm but luckily it's a best 2/3 thing so I have to do better on the final.

There's only like 6 or so power electronics tracks though and they're each like 2 minutes or less, and while they're not perfect it's a great change in style from the first half. After the p.e. tracks it goes to stuff from their splits which is mostly their normal style but a bit worse production.

I did it boys, I destroyed all the monsters and wrote some long, shitty reviews in the process!

>To the Throne of Chaos Where the Thin Flutes Pipe Mindlessly (Runtime: 1:06:38)
So here's the last disc on the compilation, and I'm still not totally sure what to make of it. It's definitely chaotic, and it's definitely lo-fi. This disc offers probably the best punk songs and noise compared to the past two, but again, it lacks in consistency. It still rocks though.

Highlights:
-PEANUT BUTTER MOTHER FUCKER
-The noise that comes in at the end of the Boots cover... cathartic!
-To the Throne of Chaos is a 7 minute noisy punk jam featuring free horns, screaming, electrifying chords and a nice steady beat.
-Barnyard is a free jazz track with fart noises. So punk.
-The punk songs on here to check out are I Want to Live (featuring some instrument I can't even begin to imagine what is...), Shakin' All Over (barely makes the cut, but this is some intense noise rock), Acid Monster (Manic vocals, walls of noise, sick!), Detroit (DESTROY ALL THE MONSTERS DOWN IN.. DE-TROIT), and 21st Century (the closer to the compilation, ends in a freakout while we listen about how we're all gonna die in this decade).
-Crunch Drone is another 7 minute feedback drone track

Also: The last question on my test was: "My nephew is in a band that rose to popularity through the album "The Moon and Antarctica". What is his band and who is my nephew?" for bonus credit.

After the test I went up to him after the test and I was like "Are you Isaac Brock's uncle?" and he was like "Yeah!" Small world. I told him about the time I met Brock at a music festival. Thanks to my entry level music knowledge on Indie music I earned probably another whole percent on my maths final. Thanks, /mu/.

Also, I realized after making my "year by year favorites" list that I basically have nothing rated before 1955 other than a lot of stand-alone singles. Rec me albums from 1955 or before.

glad i finally finished that. here's my final thoughts:

>Destroy All Monsters - 1974-1976
This is an extremely taxing listen. Like one of the RYM reviews say, do not listen to this all the way through in one sitting. You will fry yr brain, or at least leave with a headache.

Nevertheless, this compilation is stuffed to the core with some of the most interesting noise, tape and punk music I've ever heard. To imagine that this is all from 1974-1976 is ridiculous to me. These songs reminded me of so many different bands (Bugskull, Half-Japanese, Residents, Faust, Sonic Youth, yr favorite punk band probably) and yet most of these bands were after these guys. This is essentially prehistoric punk. It's an overlooked classic that predates all the other big-boys in the genre. You still gotta give this comp some credit.

Now, from an enjoyable standpoint, personally, I'm not sure I could listen through all 3 hours of this ever again. I could listen to individual discs, absolutely. But I do think bands like Bugskull and Half-Japanese are better and more enjoyable to listen to. That's not to say you shouldn't listen to this; I think everyone should at least hear one disc off of this compilation. There's so many different ideas going on there's bound to be something you'd like if you remotely like experimental in the first place.

Overall, this comp is an experience that's hard to put into words. It's the most raw, lofi punk I've ever heard, and that's putting it in light terms. All in all, if yr thinking about trying this, do it.

James Blackshaw - The Glass Bead Game (2009)
>american primitivism, psychedelic folk

The guitar-based compositions are pretty, but derivative and a bit too droning for my tastes. Conversely, the minimalist piano compositions are fucking gorgeous. Celeste is one of my favorite modern primitivism records, and it's admittedly very simple, so I never knew that Blackshaw had this much talent as a composer and as a pianist. These pieces do sound a bit like film scores, but the most beautiful, epic film scores you'll ever hear.

The Cars - The Cars (1978)
>new wave, pop rock

Sure, I'd probably rather listen to Talking Heads or Big Star or any other band I love that this heavily reminds me of, but for a no-frills, straight-forward pop rock record it absolutely does not get better than this. The songwriting and the instrumentation is so damn tight, and when they switch up their style like on "I'm in Touch With Your World" they never lose how in sync they are with each other as a band. Some vapid tunes, sure, and I've never gotten the hype for "Moving in Stereo", but there are so damn many bonafide classic songs that I have to overlook the slight duds. "Just What I Needed", come on.

posting quick thoughts, I got some studying to do. Sorry if my sentences make no sense.

>Lee Noble - No Becoming
It started off as cheesy but fun folky ambient. The interesting elements started to slowly become less and less common and I was eventually left with just some standard ambient. Still good.
6

>Time Machines - Time Machines
Amazing drone. A bit samey, but for it to be samey for 70 minutes and hold my attention all the way through is no easy feat. I can see this growing on me a lot.
8

>Steffen Basho-Junghans - In the Morning Twilight
Very dynamic and (at times) weird solo guitar. His playing is impeccable. I liked it a lot.
8

>Eric Taxxon - The Anthill
This album was hit or miss with me. Some tracks were fun, namely the instrumental ones and the one were he unexpectedly starts rapping. The piano song was quite beautiful. Many of the vocal tracks, while they had great lyrics, were quite bland on both the vocal and instrumental fronts. Cool album, but not great.
6

>Yarn - 1991
Most of these songs were very catchy, and there was a nice eerie atmosphere throughout, but the vocalist got on my nerves after awhile. The recording quality is also pretty bad. While the rhythm guitar had a nice sound, the lead guitar parts were very awkward and never felt confident/dominant. Also pretty much all the songs sounded exactly the same. The last track was pretty good though.
5

>The Sound - Jeopardy
A little on the boring side as far as post-punk goes, but there were some really catchy tunes on the great first half.
6

>Kushal Das - Raga Marwa - Surbahar
Definitely not my usual type of music, but this was very cool. I love how it begins slow and hypnotic and becomes more rhythmic and manic as it goes on.
7

>Joe Harriott & Amancio D'Silva Quartet - Hum Dono
Jazz using vocals solely as an instrument; it was interesting. I also never really liked guitar in jazz but it was executed well here. Lots of ideas and variety.

unrelated anyhow, clouddead fall more in line with a2), there's no arc or anything to their songs just random sections stitched together, i hate it

>there's no arc or anything to their songs
what is an arc? I mean lyrically there definitely is a logical thematic progression. Your point about loops makes me think you only remember the first track cause that one is basically just one loop (not saying there is anything wrong with that, plenty of great hip hop out there that consists of only one loop) but the rest of the comp is p diverse. And the switching between ideas thing I feel is more of an issue with the tracklisting. Each song is basically just two average length songs.
>now what does that mean?

>less mind-numbingly nasal voices
this is definitely something I can see as being an actual gripe. D-1 has a pretty grating voice.

the development or resolution of the narrative or principal theme, i don't know if this applies to the lyrics but you do know what "development" means in terms of music, right?
>Each song is basically just two average length songs.
this is exactly what i mean, there's no interrelation, it's like a prog rock band tying together a load of undercooked ideas to make a song long and thus "progressive" by any means
>le drill

Not 100% sure what you're saying here. Are you arguing that most anime characters are white, or that the Japanese should make a live, ethnically-correct Death Note? Because they did that and it sucked.

I'm not gonna be the guy that goes blasting about it being some sort of appropriation, I just hope it doesn't become a trend. They look bad.

Wow what a shocker, films targeting a predominantly white audience feature predominantly white actors and characters. Such fucking RACISM. MIND BLOW STAY WOKE.

Seriously though, it's not weird, it's not racism, it's not bad. Sucks that the films will be shit, though. Also if they had jap actors they'd catch all the weabs, so that wouldn't be a terrible idea either.

Dunno, see how dumb it is. I read bits of it. There was literally no practical information on how to read horoscopes. It had a short history in which it called astrology the first accurate science (lol) then said that planets cross the zodiac and depending on where they are when you're born it will affect your personality (lol) and then it had the typical list of gemini, leo, etc. and said specific characteristics for each. Apparently me and my girlfriend do NOT go together, kekaroo.

It doesn't, I literally asked something else before that. However, the intensity of your obsession with pigs is almost fetishising, that's why I asked.

That's fine and all, but it is a bit weird that you attach random images of pigs that are in no way relevant to your post almost constantly. That's why I postulated that it was because you think it's funny (lmao le random pokemon pigger XD) first, before even asking if it was anything sexual.

From your first post:
>Do you think it's funny to anyone?
Key word being 'anyone'. You implied that nobody finds it funny (and by extension enjoyable), and if that was my goal then I'm failing at it. I understand it was mostly perplexity but you must have been bothered enough on some level to make a low grade dig at me.
Also don't try to act like that was innocently interrogative, because then you tacked on that I 'could' have a sexual attraction to animals.
