Spend some time on bass, it'll help improve your sense of rhythm. Try playing along to blues and jazz tracks.

To be fair I'm not sure why people think bass OR guitar are difficult.
>>
anybody here adjust intonation themselves? if i were to do it on a strat, would i just need a screwdriver and a tuner pedal? i don't need to touch the allen wrench things, right?
>>

I can tell you've been sucking a lot of dick lately.
>>
>>70514021
please try jazz or funk bass and then tell me bass isn't difficult
>>
>>70513830
I've heard of fanned frets, but this is ridiculous
>>
>>
>>70513980
cute but out of tune
>>
>>70514029

yes you do
>>
>>70514029
You adjust how close the sadles are to the fret board. You need a 1/10 cent tuner for that. I got a sledgehammer pro custom off of amazon for 35 that is 1/10th cent accurate don't get the stanard pro it has a rattle and uses more expensive batteries without nearly as long of battery life get the pro custom.
>>
>>
>>70514029
you do not use a screwdriver for anything. You're not touching the truss or undoing any bolts. Use an allen key to adjust the intonation at the twelfth fret to match the tuner.
>>
>>70513979
in big band swing, bass has his own work for him, as well as the pianist. guitar is in it's own "cubicle" as well even though they are in the rhythm section together.
aside from that, lemme elaborate

i want to learn jazz, specifically swing music, around the 20's-40's. i want to learn about the chord progressions and common keys they would use.

>>70514019
i think of him more as a rockabilly player, but technically you're right
>>
>>70514021
The flashy parts of guitar definitely require you to be awake.

>>70514080
That's what I thought maybe at first but I just don't think so.

Now I know why girls play bass so much.
>>
>>70514029
Yeah.
Tune the string to pitch, Play the 12th fret and compare to the open string (using tuner and your ear as well). If the 12th fret is sharp, tighten the screw on the back of the bridge. This pulls the saddle away from the nut making the length of the string from the saddle to the 12th fret longer therefore making the string flatter than before. If its too sharp, tighten the screw to do the opposite. Just make sure if you have to make the 12th fret sharper, that the saddle actually moves forward and youre not just pulling the screw backwards out of the bridge. If it does this, just push the screw in with your finger.
>>
>>70514058
True, I won't disagree with that. Especially if you play on an upright. Upright bass is much harder than guitar, but fretted bass guitars were explicitly designed so that they could be picked up quickly by guitarists.
>>
>>70514100
Yeah, just tuned to DADAC#e without doing intonation afterwards cause its fine in standard
>>
>>70514148
what are you talking about? i would be using the screwdriver to adjust the scale length on each string. i was under the impression turning the screws in pic related with a screwdriver would either bring the saddle closer or further away from me, depending on which way i turned it

it's as much of a strawman as "bass is so easy!!!" when you're just talking about play root notes on a punk tune. i mean even the bassline on "is this it" by the strokes is sort of hard to get perfectly right with rhythm and attack, etc.

but jazz bass is in a whole nother league

>>

Yeah but in comparaison to other instruments, bass and guitar have the bar set really low.
>>
>>70514683
no they haven't, what the hell are you talking about. i play piano, drums, and trumpet and none of those is harder than playing guitar. do you even remember trying to play an F barre chord for the first time?

i mean if you're comparing it to instruments that just have a stupidly high learning curve (violin, oboe) then yeah it's easier to pick up, but at a high level of playing every instrument is difficult

Minor 7

Dominant 7
Half-Diminished
Diminished

and you'll be well on your way.

I'm talking about the absolute bare minimum that's required to play what's considered a "normal" song for the instrument.

Of course you can take the highest level and say "hey that's difficult", but that's not what I'm talking about.

Also just for bragging, I never struggled with the F barre. No idea why.

>>70514775
It's the same shape as one of Dean's LP iirc. I think it looks ugly.
>>
>>70514724
well, i never said i couldn't do it, but it's a fact that certain genres require more technical skill and, in improv especially, theory knowledge. And just because you admit something is difficult doesn't mean you are setting a wall in front of yourself, it just means you know that its not gonna be learnt in day or two.
>>
what's the cheapest way of sending GK3 midi guitar signal to a DAW with VST, i.e. without buying a guitar synth.
>>
>>70514854
>certain genres require more technical skill and, in improv especially, theory knowledge
i agree with you on the improv but there's a wide spectrum of skill/style in each and every genre that ranges from highly technical to mediocre.
take for example rhapsody of fire vs dragonforce. both bands have include techniques that not every band uses. however the guitarist for RoF is a technical player beyond the guitarist for dragonforce

Go to a local store and check their used section, find something you like, check reverb prices, if its reasonable buy it. B&ms will probably cost a little more, but 260 compared to 300 isnt bad. Its not uncommon for cheaper guitars to vary in quality(especially used depending on owner), so even though you might save money online you know first hand what youre getting.

There's not too much to electrics. Different pickups make the biggest difference in sound, after you find the sound you want its all about how it feels. Find out if you like single coils or humbuckers more, there are other options like p90s or soapbars but the first 2 will be the most common. I can tell you youll enjoy a guitar that sounds and plays nicely over one that looks good. The things youll notice first, as far as playability, are neck shape, bridge type and fret height. Neck shape will affect how comfortable your fretting hand is, bridge type will affect how comfortable your picking hand is, and fret size wont be as noticeable. Jumbos are easier to fret a note with but its easier to press too hard and make the note go sharp, medium are harder to fret but harder to go sharp with. Thats all slightly, most players can use both with no issues, only shredders or ancient blues players may notice a different(hyperbole). People will develop a preference, but overall its the same, as far as feel goes.

Youll start to notice things between manufacturers. Ibanez have thinner necks, ginson uses tune o matic bridges that some people cant stand. Just try a bunch out, even new ones. Youll find something.

Buy used though, 2 reasons. You have a lot more buying power, and if you pick the wrong guitar you can sell it for about the same as you bought it for.
>>
>>70516698
>hobbies

Why does it bother you how much someone else plays? Are you that insecure that you have to compare yourself to other people to feel validated as a guitarist?

>>
>>70517297
>>What's the difference between a "blooz lawyer" and a bedroom player?
nothing, but neither of them are gigging or working musicians, they're just hobbyists
>>
>>70517297

blooz lawyer has lots of money, is an old-ass white collar worker who buys $5000 Strats and Les Pauls to play nothing but E blues scale and Lynyrd Skynyrd licks.

Bedroom player probably doesn't have that much money, plays whatever he wants but not super good cause he's not a pro at all. Bon Iver covers or something probably idk.
>>
>>70517327
here's a thought: most gigging and working musicians accomplish nothing of worth in their lives, live a meager existence, and then die without achieving any amount of fame to speak of
>>
question:

am i think only person that doesn't understand the point of the middle switch position on a 2 humbucker guitar? in instead of combining both pickups, it seems to neuter the best qualities of both.
>>
>>70517327
Most musicians are hobbyists. Even gigging musicians. Unless playing music is your job, what you do to put food on your table and a roof over your head, it is a hobby. Im sorry if you don't like that word, but a majority of musicians arent making liveable(if any) money from music.

Which drink goes with your amp lads? 68 Deluxe Reverb.
>>
>>70517394
The first 3 replies have it right. Without invidual controls it's kinda useless. When i was in punk bands my favorite thing to do was switch to neck, turn volume up just enough to hear clean notes coming through, switch to middle, dime the bridge volume and both tones, switch to middle and play into a dirty amp. It made everything a lot less muddy.

It's easier to just throw a 3 position switch in instead of finding a 2 position. With that, most guitatists would notice something abnormal or feel cheated.

I've been playing the guitar for about six months but in the past couple of weeks I've decided to focus more on it to improve (normally I'd just dick around and learn songs but I'm trying to learn chords and stuff now).

It's really aggravating, anyone have tips? I also don't know if I'm using the optimal finger position for the barre.

each figure represents 5 frets of guitar (looking down on the neck from your pov)
just hit those notes and all the sudden you will be making music
(position1 would be 5th fret in a minor btw)
>>
>>70516188
>>70516390

PLAY SOMETHING THAT WE LIKE
>>
>>70520181
>>70520232
Also DON'T just play the scale up and down in the same position or you'll sound like garbage
try sliding two positions up or adding notes from other positions to make it sound better.
Guess what now you're a musician.
>>
>>70520288
>DON'T just play the scale up and down in the same position or you'll sound like garbage

he will have to play the scales up and down for a long time though for practice, but after you are familiar with them i agree, running up and down box patterns sounds really lame

>>
>>70520356
this is what a minor pentatonic looks like on the neck, every 12 frets the same thing repeats

you can probably make out the positions from >>70520059
within this whole scale

>do i have to play them in a specific order?
as long as you stay within the scales, all notes will be in key, and playing them out of order is called music

once you're familiar with 5 note pentatonic you can add extra notes to get blues and natural/harmonic scales

>>70520496
root note is the key signature so A minor the root would be A, G major the root would be G
>>

>>70520524

>>

>>
>Ernie Ball has introduced their new Paradigm line of strings blah blah blah
>if your Paradigm strings break or rust within 90 days of purchase, we will replace them free of charge.

lmao these fools. who even keeps the same set of strings on for 3 months?
>>
>>70520651
all the black dots are the same exact note, just at different octaves
they are your friend, they will help you know where to start a scale and get your positioning right
if you dont understand what keys are you really do need to brush up on stuff even more basic

to be a great guitar player all you need is:

-to memorize scale shapes
-be able to transpose them into any key
-memorize names of notes on two lowest strings
-and have an understanding of the circle of 5ths and relative keys

the rest is up to you and your creativity

3. start writing riffs and progressions in a similar vibe around it
4. add harmonies and leads
5. tell the rhythm guitarist what to play
6. argue with the bassist about his part that he's greatly over-embellishing to the song's detriment
7. eventually browbeat him back into place
8. let the drummer and vocalist do their thing
9. ????
10. profit

advancing guitarist says to record yourself experimenting with riff ideas for a couple minutes every day without listening to any of your old stuff, and then to listen to all the records at the end of the month or whatever and pick out the good ones and expand upon them and throw the rest out. steve vai in an interview said something similar. so i've started doing that

Man I can relate, friend's a bassist and always oveplays and tries to add all these slaps and weird shit into some songs where the style just doesn't fit, good thing we usually play funky stuff so he can do his thing

Not sure what rhythm you're going for there, so I'll just right the dyads how I see them. That tritone shit in the second one is pretty weird, but I feel like this would resolve it well:
