Friendly reminder: the kiddies who post in /gg/ threads have nearly ***zero*** experience concerning guitar. Playing, repair, new player recommendations, etc. The average age in these threads is around early 20s: green as shit grass.

If you have an actual question this is probably one of the most uninformed & least knowledgeable places you could ever expect a proper answer to come from.

Be weary of any advice given here as it's amateur & perfunctory at best.

Been playing bass for ~3 months. Practicing scales, simple 12 bar blues, easy songs, etc. Have some questions:

1. Will using hand cream fuck my calluses? I work in a metal shop everyday and have been using hand cream/really abrasive soap everyday to clean off my hands.

2. About how long should I/how much hand pain should I expect? I'm trying to use proper fret hand technique ( thumb on back of neck, directly across from second finger) and I seem to still be getting really bad hand pain.

3. Should I try to be learning theory/reading music while I'm still a beginner or just stick to tab and practicing basics and then go back and do theory?

4. How do I tell if the action rod in my bass is fucked? The string heights came way high from the factory and even after adjusting them at the saddle something doesn't feel right.
>>
>>70499040
>thumb on back of neck, directly across from second finger

nobody actually does this
>>
>>70499040
if you are doing 12 bar blues songs you are learning theory, practically. if you can play along to any song that's using the 1-4-5 chords and recognize by ear when each of those chord is occurring, you're doing pretty good.

as far as pain, it's a matter of feeling it out. too much and you could injure yourself, and doing it the "right way" is equally a matter of learning what works for you as of following some guide on hand position or whatever. there's a difference between pain and soreness, they say in exercise. pain means stop or you're doing something wrong, soreness is normal.

the hand creme shouldn't be a problem. and calluses will always come and go. if you stop for about a week they'll go away, then if you play for a week they'll build up again. but take care of your hands.

That could be from a lot of things. Tensing up too much, posture not being as correct as he thinks it is, or just beginner discomfort from using hand muscles never exercised before. It doesn't mean purposely using improper technique will make it better

>>
Anyone have experience with the Boss Katana?
>>
>>70499040
1. no
2. Your action could be too high. fretting hard shouldnt hurt too bad. you should be able to fret notes even without using your thumb for support.
3. If i had to start over i wouldnt use tabs; just learn by ear, read notation and learn theory right from the start. They're good habits to get into. Although if you look at tabs and learn a shitload of songs quickly that will help too i guess. At the end of the day it depends on your goals
4. take it to a tech. Its not rocket science but it does take some knowledge. Pay the $50-80 bucks, and if anything have him show you so you have an idea of what to do. Theres different factors at play; the saddles, truss rod, and even pickup height. You'll fuck up your bass if you turn the truss rod too much w/o knowing what youre doing

I have the real book. Learning the melodies and chords helps....Im gonna get a book on chord melodies eventually and start putting together arrangements.

Again, im mostly looking to learn how to play pieces....classical or jazz Guitar arrangements

...As in not just the melody; complete pieces put together for guitar, so i can just learn them and not think about the theory always.

Theres so many books on theory, but i wish there were more with just straight up songs. Its hard to find one that is somewhat progressive on the difficulty.

You mean recording DI vs recording with a laptop mic? You can try both, but I always like getting a good quality recording and then affecting it, it gives you more control. Use any stock EQ plugin to make your own lofi. Hard hpf around 300 Hz (mutes low frequencies), and hard lpf around 4kHz (mutes high frequencies). Then maybe boost mids a bit. That'll give you your basic telephonic lofi sound

What does /gg/ think about music with guitar that isn't necessarily technically extreme in difficulty like Punk/Garage Rock or even textural music like Shoegaze or Post-Rock? Do you prize "good (technical) guitar playing" as inherently desirable in music above all else, leaving all music that doesn't aspire to technical complexity as mediocre, or do you think there's something more to music than just technical detail and complexity (in a classical sense)?

That is partially why I enjoy all of King Crimson. It's the perfect balance between extreme technical ability and extremely great songwriting with enough texture to make it sound just right

I like the idea of shoegaze in theory. But in practice I don't like it most of the time. I think the jangly bullshit is partly responsible for that.
I like most technical bands without really any exceptions but I don't think a band is bad if they're not technical.
I do however hate punk and garage rock.

Songwriting questions:

1)what are basic rules when writing chord progressions?

2)how do you connect "feeling" or "emotions" to the technical aspects of music writing. Do you compose when th e emotion is hot, or let it cool off and then analyse it?

3)how do you get into a composing mood? i find that if i have little time and i must force myself to practice a lesson note per note i can do it. But if i have to improvise or write songs i must be in a certain creative mood, is there a way to get in that mood in a jiffy?
the problem is that between job and college i can never find enough time to really calm down and get into the mood naturally, that takes a lot of time
>>
>>70507722
You have to have a reason to write a song. If you don't it will come off as fake and feel forced. Your song should match the emotion of the lyrics. Id recommend writing about an experience youve had or a short made up story with as much detail as possible. From that story you can begin to draft up lyrics (which I highly recommend treating as its own separate art form and buying individual books online to improve your ability) and the emotions that story evokes in you can be matched up with a key. If you are a beginner I recommend looking at songs that match how you feel about your own sing and using the same key. Good luck anon stay hustlin

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1GlW3r5crft

As an example here's a song I've been working on but I wrote the lyrics a long time ago around the time my grandmother passed. I try to include symbols and such in my lyrics most of the time but this example is heavy in the emotion lines (which describe how you feel) and lacking in physical lines (what is happening in the song or where or who etc.) To keep your song interesting you want a good balance of both of these. You don't want to tell people how you feel (I was so sad! Or I was so angry!) You want to show it in clever ways (I watched my reflection in the water as my shadow trailed over the sand, or I was a burning building in the night)

Just trying to help out anon
>>
>>70507722

1. Look at the circle if fiths, ut generally. I start with a chord, then pick a note in the chord to be the root of the next chord.

2. Look at minor and major scales. If you want happy, go with more major chords. Sad or dark minor. Use different modes to find a different chord progression. Mix it up.

I find drum tracking harder, but it has a simple rule. Accentuation is better than saturation. Star with a capital, end with a period, or exclamation.

Keep it short and simple. Nobody wants to hear a 22 minute love ballad about the girl that rejected you. Aim for 2-3 minutes. Expand from there after youve worked out your style.

3. Drugs. Or a routine of opening cubase and working, or even make no changes but opening and working on a song every day for at least 30 minutes. Its a skill to practice like all others.

Another question, don't you ever start writing a song out of nowhere, without knowing what's it going to be about and then "add" the meaning, or realize what you were aiming for?
>>
>>70507722
>1)what are basic rules when writing chord progressions?
well once you have a couple chords that sound good together, any key in which they coexist will do. modulations will usually come in pivotal points and there are lots of ways to go from one key to another
>2)how do you connect "feeling" or "emotions" to the technical aspects of music writing. Do you compose when th e emotion is hot, or let it cool off and then analyse it?
depends, personally i write lyrics when the emotion is "hot", and then i can take all the time i need with the music or maybe i'll come up with a cool chord progression or melody and i kind of save it for when i figure out some theme or feeling that goes with it for a song.
>3)how do you get into a composing mood? i find that if i have little time and i must force myself to practice a lesson note per note i can do it. But if i have to improvise or write songs i must be in a certain creative mood, is there a way to get in that mood in a jiffy?
yeah, people tend to get pretty mystical about inspiration and creativity like it was a gift or an abstract meditational status but really it's more about practice than anything else. you sit down as often as you can and write stuff, not in an emotional cathartic way but more as a methodical excercise of conveying ideas in a certain way you like, and you'll get better at it. reading and listening to a lot of music helps too.
>>
>>70510147 (my example)
>>70507945

when it comes to writing music you can start in whichever order you prefer, there is no set rule in this, however you want to be consistent. The reason some people listen to Ariana Grande for example is because her music is consistently sexy and promiscuous, the reason some people listen to [your favorite band] is because it is consistently [your favorite bands vibe].

to answer your question, my preference is to have lyrics/emotions/vibe already written down or plotted out in my head before going into writing chord progressions and song structure.

never forget that people listen to music because of the emotions that are invoked in playing. if you write out your music in the most technical, manufactured fashion, people will still like it, but they wont like it as much as people who are very expressive and hypnotic like Kurt Cobain for example.

9 out if 10 times it's not the gear but the musician's head that is defective.

Can someone explain this phenomenon?

This Neely guy specifically says to NOT hold your thumb behind the middle finger. Why are you guys telling me wrong information?
>>
>>70511667
a chord is just a particular set of notes and there are lots of different ways to voice it, as well as multiple ways to finger a particular voicing
>>
>>70511680
I don't remember him saying that, rather just mostly "stay relaxed", in which video is it ?
>>
>>70511783
>"People who aren't shit do it"
>"its improper technique"
>A successful bass player and composer says not to do it

I'm not sure why I thought people here would know what they're talking about

you don't need a capo, but should know that chords are given relative to the capo, meaning you have to transpose up if you want to play in the original key. Ex Gmaj with capo on 2nd fret would be a Amaj without. Cmaj would be a Dmaj and so on.
>>
>>70511957
I agree with him, but the classical stance on the left hand is that the thumb and middle finger should be aligned.
I've been messing around playing more with the classical thumb positioning (as opposed to his technique I've been doing on guitar since I started almost three years ago) and I have no pains whatsoever after doing it for about two months, multiple hours a day. The problem's not your fretting technique but rather how much you tense up doing it.

He's got a great video about the whole "finger stenght" bullshit people keep repeating.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_RdSSQeqU0

Also you mentioned your action being maybe setup wrong, how high is it ?
>>
>>70511667
most regular chords consist of three notes called a triad. A Cmaj chord would be the notes C E G. As long as you have these notes you can play a C chord without caring about the order of notes. C E G is the normal chord, but E C G would also be a C, but an inversion. Inversions pop up a lot on guitar because of the way the instrument is made.

On guitar its perfectly normal to hold the thumb over the guitar, at least for those of us who have bigger hands. For me this is important as i would be bending my wrist way too much if my thumb sat behind the middle finger. As for bass, i would use a combination of whats comfortable and also a position that doesn't put much strain on the wrist. You shouldn't feel any pain in your wrist if you play in a "proper" way. If you have the thumb behind the bass it should at least be at around 90 degrees.

Will this allow me to split my bass signal into clean and overdriven through a pedal, and send them both to the same amp?

i don't think that will sound like you think it will sound.
if you want to be able to blend clean and OD this overdrive does that

Thanks. I guess I'll have to open a theory book.
>>
>>70512579
I think it will sound like a distorted bass tone without losing the low end

Am I wrong

What would it sound like?
>>
should I take a use ampeg 4x12 with casters for $150

it has a bunch of gay spray paint "666" on top and some band's name on the side. i guess i could try to paint over it
>>
>>70512607
oh yeah that makes sense
i was thinking more like a balanced mix of the OD and the clean sound which would probably end up being really messy but yeah if your OD is cutting the low frequencies then having the clean sigal underneath will probably "fill" it up
>>
>>70512613
i don't know how often you come across a deal like that in the country of burger but i'd get that cab in an instant no matter how many dildo stencils it's covered with

Yeah I use a Blues Driver which sounds rad on its own but I lose all presence in the mix when everyone else is playing.

I just want a little bit of dirt without being lost, and I also want to keep using my blues driver because I use it on guitar too and cba getting another pedal
>>
>>70512739
makes sense
that MXR bass OD looks rad though, i don't want to shill it too much without having tried it but it looks very promising
>>
>>70512704
it's an ampeg v i think they're much less quality than the b15s or anything like that

It looks good yeah but $$$
Maybe in the future

That was a beautiful song senpai

I didn't notice anything wrong with your rhythm. I guess I can see what you mean by that slow sweeping sound but it's not like it doesnt work with the song

>>

steve terreberry, he's hilarious
>>
>>70513103
This I have a cheapo guitar. IT's not possible to lower the bridge low enough for proper string height, 6th string gets fret buzz when playing certain frets and the 6th and 1st string can't be adjusted enough to actually get the intonation set right, they can be set REALLY close but still not quite there. I'm about to trade it in for a better guitar.
>>
>>70513157
Oh, and used this shitty guitar still goes for nearly as much as that guitar the guy posted goes for new.
>>
I've been playing guitar for about 5 years now and I picked up bass about a month ago. I waited for so long because bassists always tell me how technical and difficult it is.

Bull.

Fucking.

Shit.

Bass is so retardedly easy. I can't believe I ever listened, I can already play at or above the level of any bassist I know. Almost all the bass parts to songs are really simple and rarely fast. The only thing you could possibly say are the strings are harder to push down, but that isn't a problem if you aren't a wimp.

TL;DR bassists are all retarded, but I am having fun with bass.

alright fa/gg/ots.
i wanna learn swing guitar. mainly rhythm so don't sperg out about django or charlie or wes.
giggle only results in books people want to sell or jazz lessons in the style of djanog/charlie/wes etc.
>>
>>70512512
I've been thinking about getting one of those for my guitar

Have the A signal go through my normal pedalboard and guitar amp and then have B signal go through an octave pedal into a bass amp

Ill be able to switch between guitar and bass or both seamlessly

Mostly true but there are exceptions. Playing bass is much harder in a funk band; funk guitar is brain dead easy. But for most genres bass is much easier.
>>
>>70513264
maybe it's because you've been playing guitar for 5 years

Don't be such a fag, everyone wants a flying V uke.
>>
>>70512613
Try and research which particular cab it is. If it's an older one that came with a v4 then cop it. Later ones came with the same speakers that crate amps used (aka shit) and aren't anything to write home about.

Does your amp have two inputs?

I learned to play by watching YouTube tutorials for songs I liked and learning chords.
