First of all, Star Trek TNG is not comparable to MLP. You're going to have a hard time even arguing that it had character arcs in the first place. TNG and The Simpsons are also almost totally static in comparison to MLP.
Second of all, Star Trek as a franchise was at its peak during TNG S7 and the two years following it.
And third, if anything we are in the opposite of doldrums with the MLP franchise getting a second wind with such a strong season 7, the movie, and other media.

Weird, I don't think I'm a "doomsayer" at all. It's funny you interpret it that way.

The show is still good at what it was always good at. It still feels like the characters have a story-telling "spine" (some stronger than others) and that the writing staff prefers introducing new characters instead of squishing existing characters into novel scenarios.

I guess the closest to "doomsaying" I come is acknowledging that the show is getting old, with predictable effects on the engagement of the fandom. IMO this is more good than bad, but it's a result of the show's strengths.

Sometimes I'm too tired and busy to really enjoy it so I don't watch it until I've slept or dealt with whatever the problem is. Plus I prefer a high resolution for my first viewing and my Internet is shit so I have to wait several hours and by then I'm usually asleep if I worked the day before.

I still enjoy the show too. Ponies are my job. New episodes are gifts. I really need to rewatch Season 5-7 though. I don't think I've appreciated them enough.
