Depends on what kind of CYOA you're in.

If it's something where time would actually be a critical factor/ fatigue would be a critical factor, something military based, or like a werepony CYOA (is that a thing, I can't think if it is or not), or heck, a CYOA like Dying Light, then time and a day/night cycle would be very important.

Other fics? Time matters not, because time is flexible like anime fight scene conversations or when the Heroes are running away from a bomb in an action movie.

So I have this one idea, it literally struck me ten minutes ago. Basically it's Make History: the Quest. Here are the basics. You are a chief of one of the Three Tribes each one with it's own pros and cons, and using your wits, cunning skills or force if necessary, you'd have to form Equestria, or whatever your future state's name will be. I intend to make all the spy and diplomatic missions real-time minisessions with periods of choosing what to do next in the larger scale (i. e. rob some Earth village of their food because winter is coming or get a trade agreement, train more ponies in archery to prevent Pegasi attack or choose spears for universal use, this kind of shit). I still need to think about it some more, but does it have any potential? I'd prefer to give as much of the influence to the players and less to me if possible, for maximum enjoyment.

I'm bored, and I'm sure there's been some new CYOAs, or at least characters in existing CYOAs, since the last time I was asked to make a paperpone.
Is there anybody anyone wants? I'm tired of masturbating to porn that doesn't even arouse me anymore and then crying in the shower. I need something to do.

I'm surprised that quests with low player participation continue to use open choice formats when they would likely see increased participation if they presented options for the players to choose from. Open inputs are useful when there are lots of players to throw out ideas, brainstorm, and talk through each others ideas. When a quest only has a few players though, most of them likely won't make the effort to think up a solution on their own, a problem compounded by poor prompts. The player is more likely to see the first response and think "eh good enough", especially because they know if they think up something different there won't be enough players around to discuss and weigh the merits of the plans.

Quests that present multiple options, on the other hand, force the players to think through a couple potential inputs, which will naturally lead them towards preferring one which they will then vote for. Even with a small number of players, it's easier for a QM to tally up votes than to weigh conflicting suggestions which haven't been fully talked through by the players. This will encourage readers to participate because they can provide input in the quest without risking stagnating it.

I feel like too many QMs of lightly-played quests just assume it's because no one is interested and the one or two players they have is all there are. In reality I suspect these quests have considerably more lurkers and the QMs should think about how to engage them and turn them into players. I think multiple choice format would be an ideal way to do this.

I think it is more that they just cannot think of anything better then not trying to.
People need to fucking learn it is ok to second a post if you agree with it even if there is no danger of it getting outvoted.

As for your idea it is fine to just give a few potentiol suggestions but always make it clear they could come up with there own.
You also want to make the potentiol suggestions vague sometimes so the players need to refine them.
