It's cool but honestly so far we really haven't got much out of it. I swear Joy isn't letting us talk to her without her being there on purpose. She's the one with Pips leash firmly wrapped around her hoof and i'm not sure I like that.

I guess it feels weird to admit it, but I wanted Pip to be ours. She did strike the deal,(whatever deal that was) to make her come with us, but we were gonna try and sneak her out anyways.

I'm kinda excited to see how she's gonna change things though, she seems like she'd be a strong party member to have.

If you are the QM of CQ (I have my doubts) the reason why I play is because I enjoy the characters and the story surrounding them. In a way it's like a book or comic and we've just entered the early phase of ACT 2. I just feel like there is so much to do and explore and I don't want to miss out on stuff.

So yeah I am still enjoying the ride and hope to still be enjoying months from now. As I doubt it's going to end anytime soon.

Actually there are two demons in CQ. One that's in his amulet and slowly corrupting Emerald's soul and then there's Pip. Pip is cute though evil. So far she really hasn't done anything yet to make us regret our choice.

But that's sort of the problem she hasn't done anything yet. Joyride has been keeping such a tight leash on her that we haven't been able to get any answers from her. Things like the demon in the amulet or what the ritual was that Emerald's step-parents were doing.

In fact I'm concerned that Joyride has probably made it where the only info Pip will give us is what has been pre-approved by her. The demon is bound to her after all, not us...

I think it's because the QM fostered that paranoia. Anytime we would attempt to take any sort of risk we would end up in a shitty situation. We almost panicked and bailed out of lewds with Hope because of the writing sending up perceived red flags.

For all the things he knows, he's still inconveniently vulnerable. I wish some of you guys would get that through your heads. We can only use wits to do so much before we have to take a safer way out. He's not a coward, you carefully choose your "battles" if you don't have anything to back yourself up with. He's still pretty much a beginner in magic and alchemy. I'm getting pretty sick of people harping on him,(and the players) for being a "coward" just because we don't do something risky,(and sometimes very stupid too) that we aren't sure how it will turn out.

Remember the first time we tried to take the book with us and passed out on the way out of the village because we were already hungry and on top of that didn't get any sleep yet? We really didn't have anything at our disposal to counter that situation. And when we were leaving the village after Joy got there, people wanted to just run away with it. Which would of been fairly risky in itself cause they wouldn't of forgiven us a second time for taking it, if they would of caught us.

When we are more prepared for anything bad that could happen from having "fun" then i'll be all for taking some more risks.

This isn't like a video game where you know there is a good chance nothing bad will happen. Or at the very least you can just retry if you fuck up on something. We do something stupid, and that's it for him. Fic said that wouldn't be the end of the CYOA necessarily, but I think i'd stop playing then even if it did go on.

I really like adventure though. Playing Colt Quest is like looking at a dungeon full of loot and saying "Nah, I think I'll just ignore it until I get to level 50 first. Even though ignoring the potential reward it gives will make getting to level 50 longer and harder."

I think they were small edits that didn't change much.

I feel like that comparison falls flat cause it's more like; we're in a dungeon that could possibly have some loot or a lot of loot in it but we don't have a map. And there is probably a fair stock of traps in it, but the only way we can find out is by stepping into them first. While there are some traps we end up noticing, others we don't even see, let alone know about.

If there was some actual items/events that we missed that would of been beneficial to us, I might agree with this point. But as far as i'm aware of, there hasn't been anything like that.

So... If you actually played the quest at all, and or knew halfway what you were talking about, you'd know that he is training in magic and alchemy. He doesn't need to become a meathead just because you think that's the way he should "toughen up".

I've said quite a few times that, at the moment, he isn't ready yet. He hasn't even gotten much time to practice magic and stuff. I doubt you play the quest anyways so I don't know why you're suggesting things for it when it's not relevant to how we're playing it right now.

And i'll keep harping on the point of saying that depending on what risks it is and what we would get out of it I don't see much reason to take them. We mess up badly and we're fucked. We almost died once as it was, and a second time, had we decided to mess with the large clay pot in that room with all the pots in it. Fic said we avoided a bad end by not messing with that. No one has really given any instances where we should of took a risk,(at least not that I remember) that would of greatly benefited us. The closest instance that I can even talk about, if i'm trying to think of it from another side of the discussion, is when we wanted to take Pips book after Joy arrived. We were waffling between a few choices of just taking off with the book and taking it with us. Or taking the book and smashing open the lock that apparently wasn't as sturdy as we thought and letting her out and burning the book to free her. Which might of been fine and dandy, cause I honestly really don't like LS, but for one we would of had to make a deal with Pip. That and just taking the book/Pip probably would of ruined any chances we would of had maintaining a neutral/lukewarm relationship with LS. It just seemed like it was too much of a nuisance to handle ourselves. And we would of had a hard time convincing LS to part with it when we had nothing to offer. I do wish we could of had a chance to strike a deal with her at the very least, but letting Joy handle it I don't feel like was the worst choice. Though I will admit that i'm already wondering why we even bothered with it when Joy has her on a tight leash anyways. She'll still be an asset I suppose. I actually thought she'd be more ours to use though, as weird as that feels to say about an ally.

Even though i'm personally fine with the pace it's been going, I will admit that sometimes there doesn't feel like there is much opportunity to have much meaningful autonomy. It might not hurt to give more opportunities for personal growth and stuff. Besides, I would argue that even getting to the point where he met Joy he had to fend for himself quite a bit. And just in that part of his story he probably had quite a bit of personal growth. We just don't know how much traveling/fending for himself he had to do after leaving Alacris to her fate.

We have instances were we do things, like the whole village visit with LS and LE. But we honestly couldn't do much cause of lacking our supplies and means to help ourself. With this trip to the beehive hopefully giving us some chances to grow some. I'm very keen on avoiding a bad end. If this was a vidya I would be more adventurous cause if you screw up, depending on the game you can recover from it.

I will agree that maybe sometimes we should take more risks, but saying when it's an appropriate time to do that and when it's not it is hard to say for sure. And entirely subjective. Hell, I was somebody that was all for taking some potions from him so we could eavesdrop on them better.

I just feel like people get waayyy too abrasively vocal about not taking risks. And it must be hard to keep all these things in mind while making a story.

Not necasarly bad, but the players are pretty much always arguing because ficfic might kill emerald. Which means no fun allowed and playing the quest means arguing every point.

ficfic has given the players many options to improve emeralds survivability but that haven't been able to take advantage of them recently.

So after reading Dirty Work and Heart of Iron, I've realized that I'm tired of the hard prompts that have a character turn around and ask the MC directly about something out of the blue. It's usually 'Post yes to continue' in the most immersion breaking way that doesn't at all match the conversation it was a part of.

It might be fine for playing but it's really annoying to read afterwards constantly.

I disagree. The only reason it's called a "bad ending" is because the character either ends up being dead due to consequences during the actual story or, because they can no longer pursue the overall goal of the whole CYOA or specific target the QM and Players were aiming towards. Instead of calling it a “bad ending”, the better term would be a “premature ending” or simply “ending” as that’s what actually ends up happening. Yes, it’s an unsatisfying conclusion but if you remove that possibility you end up with nothing but a boring, straightforward novel.

CYOA is a game, it’s an adventure. I’m of the belief that every game should have a potential failure state. Of course, I’m not saying that every CYOA should have a possibility of character’s death, no. Some CYOAs might have severe and grave consequences that you can still push and continue through, but if a character death is one of those possible consequences, then it will be kind of weird to not end the character’s story with his or her passing; though I'm being a hypocrite here.

I disagree. That is certainly one way to tell a story, but it doesn't have to be the only way. When you are playing a story in a narratively minded video game (for example) and you die, it doesn't say "tough shit, you chose wrong, better luck next game". It says "well, you fucked up and died, but don't be discouraged. Continue?" and lets you try again. You can say that when players fuck up the quest bad ends, OR you can say when it fucks up you show them the bad end but then let them keep playing to try and do better.

Both are valid ways to run a quest. I personally prefer the second way, though.

Pick any two quests. Now count the number of letters in both of their names.

If one quest has an odd number of letters, it's main cast will be dropped into the quest with an even number.
If they both have even numbers, the quest worlds will merge, and the main casts will be able to help each other out.
If they both have odd numbers, The main casts will swap worlds, and be forced to deal with the circumstances of that.
