Any late night lurkers?

Wondering if you could critique this flash story. I am willing to take some insults, but maybe you could offer some general critique as well.

Thanks for your time.

I've finished my two eggs. Scrambled. With pepper. Two and a
half shakes of pepper. I

left one bite full on the plate. Have to leave the one bite full on the plate.

I have to turn off the light above my stove. Off. On again to make sure it's working. And off. Good. Everything is good.

I have to make sure the outside is still there. I don't have to. I want to. It's just a joke really. I do it every morning. But still. It's just a joke.

I have to put my shoes on before I open the door to check if the outside is still there. It doesn't matter that I'm not stepping outside. I have to wear the shoes before I can check. I don't have to. I want to. It's just a joke. Really, it is.

I tie the laces tight. Left shoe first. Always the left shoe first. And then the right. I cannot do the right one first, it wouldn't be right. Left. Then right. It's the right way.

Shoes on. I can go check. I unlock the door. I lock the door. I have to make sure the lock is working. I unlock the door. I lock the door. I unlock the door. I lock the door. I unlock the door.

No. No, no, no, no. Did I check it twice? Unlock, then lock, then unlock, then lock, then unlock? Or did I only do unlock, lock, then unlock? This isn't good. If I check it again, will it be right, or will I have done it too many times? I have to do it the right amount of times. I can't do it less. I can't do it more. No, no, no, no. Why is this happening? It's just a joke, really. I don't have to....

Twice or three times? This is not good. How many times? Do I check it again? I could just walk away from it. But I have to check to see if the outside is still there. I don't have to. I want to. It's just a joke, really. I have to check, I have to check, I have to decide on the lock.

One more time. I'm sure of it. That will be two. It has to be two. It doesn't have to be. Lock. Was that two, or three? I have to check if the outside is still there. Unlock.

I open the door.

The outside is not there.

That's not the outside. That's not the normal outside. It's yellow. It's bright yellow space. And dogs. Dogs are flying. I think they are dogs. They are animals. And they have children in their teeth? Or dolls? It doesn't matter. I checked to see if the outside was there. I did do that. I did check. I didn't have to. It's just a joke, really. I have more pressing concerns.

Did I check the lock twice or three times? I can undo it if I did it three times instead of two. Before I close it. I don't have to. I want to. It's a joke, really.

Lock. Unlock. That's minus one. Is it at two now, or did I make it one? Lock. Unlock.

The outside that is not there is being loud. I have to concentrate.

Lock. Unlock.

Very good depiction of OCD.
good job on not breaking the present-tense narrative.
Flying dogs aren't terribly creative, but I don't think that's the point.

Good job, I like it

Yes. It's neat pairing it with a dfw. Seeing how dfw was inspired by him is cool

I liked it.

A bit slow, though.

The ending is a pretty good payoff IMHO

If the story isn't written with a third-person omniscient narrator in the past tense, it's tryhard "experimental" bullshit and fails as literature because it's fundamentally inauthentic.

What do you do when you finish a book, /lit/?

Do you write down a review? Or maybe write a summary and analysis of characters, thenes, motifs, etc? Do you try to have a discussion (in person) with others who've read the book? Or do you simply close it and never think of it again?

Personally I like to create my own "SparkNotes" for future/more in depth readings. Curious to see what others do when they finish a book.

What did /lit/ last read, what are you currently reading, and what do you plan to read next?

Rules: to post you must recommend books to another anon. I get the advantage of being OP, fags.

Last read: Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Wolfe
Current: Gravity's Rainbow by Pynchon
Next: The Lives of Girls and Women by Alice Munro

Last: tcol49 ( second read)
Current: Infinite jest ( around p700)

Bruh, get a grip.

Also, do you feel like you're getting meme'd on Infinite Jest? I sure didn't, I actually loved it. Could hardly ever put it down.

If dubs, read The Sound and the Fury.

Inherent Vice is as good an approximation of a rich prose-sylist novel that we're gonna get.

Novels that are able to work as stories through translating their concrete imagery from language to film work better, something like Mouchette or One Flew. Even the best directors have trouble making films from novels beloved for their stylish prose, especially modern ones: see Kubrick's adaptation of Lolita.

Thanks, gotta say I hated the film Inherent Vice. Seen Lolita. Will check out Mouchette.

Let's talk submissions, acceptance letters, rejection letters, etc.

Have submitted a few pieces of flash fiction, a few short stories. I started with no pay stuff, but then decided pay markets.

Did you receive form rejection letters, personally written rejections? What did your acceptance letters look like?

Mostly interested in short story submissions, but also curious for you novel writers who submitted to publishers or agents.

So far I've got two rejection form letters from Clarkesworld. The last one literally took less than 12 hours to get back.

I have an english sonnet submitted to Phobos magazine right now, no response yet, also a horror story I submitted to Apex Magazine.

Still a couple of flash fiction pieces out in the void to no pay markets that are going on 4 months.

Here's an example of a form rejection letter from clarkesworld.

Dear Anon,

Thank you for the opportunity to read "Cockroach Vapor" Unfortunately, your story isn't quite what we're looking for right now.

In the past, we've provided detailed feedback on our rejections, but I'm afraid that due to time considerations, we're no longer able to offer that service. I appreciate your interest in Clarkesworld Magazine and hope that you'll keep us in mind in the future.

Take care,

Whats the most you have even spent on a book? Or the most expensive book you have ever received as a gift?

I clock in at 90 dollars or so. A friend managed to track down an out of print collection of short stories called 'The Azathoth Cycle' and gave it to me as a Christmas present
She was the best.

Do textbooks count?

I spent $90 on a math book once. I think that's the most.

I pirate all the super-expensive piece of shit ones that my university requires for courses.
>>
if you count college textbooks then like 400 bucks once

if you only mean literature, then I think I capped out at 40. I got that pretty Frank Miller cover of Gravity's Rainbow.

Excepting textbooks, maybe Katai Tayama's The Quilt and Other Stories for $35.
