Have been wanting to set up the idea of this kind of story for years.

Anybody have any pointers? The last time I tried to get some help from /lit/, it didn't work out because I was trying to hide the fact with a slow buildup.
Will be more frank and forthcoming this time.

Any gift ideas in form of books for an awesome kid and her parents? She's only twelve but she's making a translation of Pindar just for me, and she's made a habit of reading Boethius and Aurelius every night before bed. Both her parents are practically geniuses, top level scholars, they have a ton of Loeb books and let me borrow a bunch at a time as long as I want. I'd like to get them some special titles, but they're all super well read so I'm at a loss. Any suggestions for something very obscure but which they'd doubtlessly love?

When the adults put them in their ship after stopping Jack from hunting Ralph, It is implied that the navy is hunting an enemy very similarly to how Ralph was hunted. But you tell me, who's gonna stop the adults from murdering?

At what age do you guys think that Shakespeare should be read? I think reading him at an age too young invites too much misunderstanding, especially with the themes of his more serious (and lauded) plays. I myself started reading Shakespeare intermittently when I was already in my 20s.

What's your favorite Shakespeare play?

(I'm currently reading pic related, since it features the best villain Shakespeare wrote.)

Haven't read Absolam, Absolam, but tbqhpfam TSATF was more accessible than I previously had thought (before reading it, that is. It's a matter of mentality, I think. Don't go in expecting this book to be difficult or you'll be looking for things that might not even be there.
>>
>>8095612
I had an easier time with A,A! once I finished reading with TSATF. It's complicated at times, but just read through it. In the end everything just coalesces and makes sense.

>If someone were to assign to every person in the world the task of selecting the best of all customs, each one, after thorough consideration, would choose those of his own people, so strongly do humans believe that their own customs are the best ones. Therefore only a madman would treat such things as a laughing matter. There are many weighty proofs which confirm that all people have these strong attachments to their own customs, but let me describe this particularly interesting one: During his reign, Darius summoned the Hellenes at his court and asked them how much money they would accept for eating the bodies of their dead fathers. They answered that they would not do that for any amount of money. Later, Darius summoned some Indians called Kallatiai, who do eat their dead parents. In the presence of the Hellenes, with an interpreter to inform them of what was said, he asked the Indians how much money they would accept to burn the bodies of their dead fathers. They responded with an outcry, ordering him to shut his mouth lest he offend the gods. Well, then, that is how people think, and so it seems to me that Pindar was right when he said in his poetry that custom is king of all.

Why do people discount Herodotus based on trivialities about animals in far-off regions when he is sharp as a fucking razor on the stuff that really matters?

MUH REALPOLITIK HELLENE

*grabs pais and shuffles feet*
>>

Because most people are ruled by custom, and it is popular to dislike Herodotus. If you ever find an unpopular thinker interesting you'll be met with ridicule by most. Remember anon: most people are more affected by connotation than meaning.

Thucydides is based too.

"The strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must."

/lit/, who can say this guy didn't finished philosophy?

Protip: You can't

he didnt finish it. he only clarified how it works and why it emerges. it is as if someone described the anatomy of the body and how the digestion works to give the body cells material to build.

in the end it is equals to nothing, because none of us needs to know how our body or mind works for them to work.

when one is done with this guy one is where one started but with a different view of things, as if one first had some magical view of the body and food based on nature gods or magical substances and then after the anatomy class one had the scientific view: one still goes to eat the same lunch and the body still does the same stuff as before the new "insight".
