What are some books that can teach me some things on how to talk with women?

"How to win friends and influence people" is often being recommended. I haven't read it though.

Go outside and get a couple of drinks. Then try talking to a woman. You'll get embarrassed. Eventually you'll get better at it.

Harry Potter

>people tell me genre fiction is not profitable even while stephen king and jk rowling are billionaires

Is making it in literature the same as any other art (music, games, art), in the sense there's a clique of high archievers while the average pleb artists starve?

In this sense, do learning the craft of writing (metric, style rules, grammar, plot construction) will help you to overcome such odds?

Anyone else partial to works that have a vague supernatural element to them?

I'm not talking about magic realism like Marquez, or unnreal stuff like Borges.

I mean stories that are completely realistic except for one event or character, or there's something subtly off about the whole thing.

A good example is the Judge in Blood Meridian. Or a few Thomas Ligotti stories, like "Our Temporary Manager".

Kafka might fit in there too with his elements of the fantastical in "The Penal Colony" or "The Trial".

Anybody have a sense of what I'm talking about? Anyone have any recommendations?

I think the distinction you're proposing is not wholly valid and never really has been. Classical Greek prose, The KJV Bible, Dante, Milton, Journey to the West and some parts of Shakespeare were rife with the supernatural. Sci fi elements are present in most literary dystopian fiction.

I recommend Riddley Walker. A stylistically experimental post-apocalyptic novella set in a reforested England around 2000-3000 years in the future. It's written in a very Chaucerian future English and narrated by a local nomad boy who takes on his the role of local "shaman" after his father dies at age 12. He has supernatural visions, creation myths are replaced by destruction myths, and the whole book has very pagan and christian syncretic undertones to it. There is also a protopolitical element regarding violent conflicts between nomads and farmers, and commentary on propaganda and the separation (or lack thereof) between church and state.

Pilgermann by the same author might also be up your alley. It's about a castrated European Jew that has a vision of Jesus and goes on a journey to seek Sophia in Jerusalem. The landscape is grotesque and there's imagery strongly inspired by Hieronymous Bosch.

Jewish self-loathing and self-perception as a deracinated tragic nomad race is very common, and racial science was common sense in Weininger's day

He went looking for the qualities of modern man that were decadent and sickly, in a world that universally had anxiety bordering on mania that modern man had become decadent and sickly, and he found them in the streak of Jewishness running through his nature and through much of the European intelligentsia, and he attributed that to a more essential characteristic, primeval femininity, at the same time that Freudian psychoanalysis was coming up with similar ideas and various theories of ancient matriarchy were popular in intellectual circles

Those theories, of human nature as situated between two poles of masculine and feminine essence, and of deracination, are very interesting and actually presage Heidegger's sentiments on the Jews

I wrote above you
I shit on Freud, but vaguely (emphasis) human nature might indeed be situated around two poles of masculine and feminine. See imprinted brain theory

I grew up reading Stephen King. If it wasn't for his pulp-tier fantasy novel, The Talisman, I wouldn't have developed a love for reading. Lord knows high school didn't do that for me. I hadn't read any of his older stuff (pre-2000) in years and I absolutely loved the new version if IT.

Then I watched a video on youtube discussing the differences between the book and the 1990 miniseries and then mentioned the pedo sex scene. I either forgot about it or never knew about it. It was one of the few of his books that I didn't finish.

Now I'm ready to say, fuck him. I don't want to support that shit. It turns me stomach to think about it. Hell, it even cured my porn addiction for the time being. I haven't fapped since I heard about that and I have no desire to.

Anyone else have any experiences like that with King or any other writer?

Hey there /lit/, let's have some fun.

You have 5 minutes to write as much as you can about the subject below. You can write whatever you want: an essay, some prose, a poem, a song.

Now obviously you could cheat and give yourself however long you feel like, but where's the challenge in that?

So get your notepad, set a 5 minute timer and get ready to write about...

Creation!

Have fun and good luck!

When, long ago, the gods created Earth
In Jove's fair image Man was shaped at birth.
The beasts for lesser parts were next designed;
Yet were they too remote from humankind.
To fill the gap, and join the rest to Man,
Th'Olympian host conceiv'd a clever plan.
A beast they wrought, in semi-human figure,
Filled it with vice, and called the thing a Nigger.

What do you do when you finish a book? I typically spend the night thinking and make some notes about it, read a summary to refresh details in my mind, then read some reviews. Asking because it feels like any new thoughts and enthusiasm die down within a day or two, and I'm wondering if that can be extended at all

I stay put reflecting about it for a while, then read a summary and look for some info that was in the book that was new for me. After this I start another book.

So what theory of justice do social justice warriors subscribe to? Whatever theory it is, it has to somehow at the same time be:

1. socially constructed
2. culturally relative
3. and nevertheless have moral jurisdiction over cultures and individuals that don't subscribe to those norms.

You can't reconcile 1-2 with 3.

You do realize most appealing translation jobs involve translating technical documents / legal jargon? It's hardly a very interesting career unless you're autistic and autistically interested in whatever jargon you're translating. If you want to translate something popular, you have to have an established status/name to get paid or you translate for peanuts. If you translate obscure literature, you translate for peanuts. If you translate foreign films, you translate for peanuts. If you translate websites, you translate for peanuts.

Interpreting is more lucrative.
