On the point of hunting prairie dogs, have you used things other than bipods?

I've never hunted them but i have hunted coyotes in open fields and used monopods , shooting sticks and a camera tripod modified as a rifle rest. I also did this hunting from a ground blind and i assume you are laying on the ground. Just trying to throw ideas out there.

Yes. My day pack contains a bipod-style set of shooting sticks, a shooting mat, rangefinder, spotting scope+tripod (which I've tried to use for shooting with an adaptor), about 1200 rounds of ammo, and around 3 gallons of water. It weighs close to 60lbs.

I'll go out before dawn, and shoot between 60-100 rounds per prairie dog town. I usually have more prairie dogs within reasonable hiking distance of where I park than I can reasonably carry ammo for, and on a day where I don't need 3 fucking gallons of water to avoid dehydration I'll take a full case of ammo in the truck on top of what I have in my backpack, and resupply mid-day.

It's really not that uncommon for me to kill 800-900 prairie dogs in one trip. And there's ALWAYS more. In fact I've hunted the same town 5 days in a row and can't even see a noticable decline in active prairie dogs, even when they're literally having to jump over the bodies of their comrades to get out of their holes.

2 years ago WY had a $1 bounty per prairie dog killed within one public-use zone, but to claim the bounty was too big a hassle for me (had to pick up a park ranger to observe and verify the kills, since nobody wants to touch one due to disease, and of course that brought every redneck with a rifle out and it was the Wild West all over again).

And I'm not really fast and light. Summers here are brutally hot, I use a 45L tactical ruck for prairie dogs and it's overflowing as-is. I'm taking over a thousand rounds of ammo, spotting scope with tripod, a light lunch, 3 gallons of water, a shooting mat, packable rain gear (it's amazing how a 100*F day with no clouds can turn into 60*, pouring down rain, with a 50mph wind in like 2 hours here), extensive first-aid kit, dope book (I'll shoot out to 600m), sunscreen/bug spray, leather gloves, binoculars, and a satphone for emergencies.

The spotting scope, leather gloves, and shooting mat are 100% required. Whole area's covered in tiny little cacti and most of where I hunt is no-vehicles-allowed so being able to glass a valley from 2000+m off beats the shit out of walking over to it to look for towns.
