Question: I generally find ARs to be very boring, but recently have been thinking about building one. I'd like to have an A1-lookalike chambered in 6.5x39 becasue why the fuck not.

The only issue I see is all the 6.5 uppers are tacticool as fuck, so I would have to buy all the bits separately and then have a smith put it all together for me, which sounds like a lot of money. So my question is about how much would getting a rifle built like this cost? Would it be ore than a thousand bucks? If so, I probably won't go through with it, I just thought it would be a nifty thing to have.

Building an upper can be done with nothing but a leather belt, a pair of pliers, and a razor blade though. Especially with how tolerant milspec barrel nuts are to varying torque levels.

And other than needing a special-snowflake barrel and bolt the rest is the same as a regular AR. You could probably do it for around $900, and that's WITH a semicustom pencil barrel in 6.5G.

Where exactly would one go to get a "semi-customer" barrel then? You'll have to forgive me, I know jack all about putting ARs together, or whee to find the parts, let along the myriad of manufacturers. Brownells is the only pace I know of off the top of my head, and for what they are charging for 6.5G barrels, I find your claim of sub-1k final cost a bit dubious, especially when you factor in what a set of triangle handguards will probably end up costing, unless there are new manufactured ones out there that can be had for less than the 2-500 that "collectors" charge for them.

well $200-250 can get you a ballistic advantage or larue barrel. both are very accurate and the ba comes with a sub moa guarantee with match ammo.

i have used 2 BA barrels and can confirm the sub moa with match ammo.

Like Greenie, it likes pretty much everything. ADI 55gr, PP U55gr 52gr Black Hills, and 62gr Fusion will hold 5 in a nickel at 100 yards. It hates PMC 55gr. Haven't tried wolf or any 77gr other yet. 70gr barnes holds about a quarter sized group which Greenie did better but oh well.

Finally got the last of my AR parts together to finish my first build. This has been almost 4 years in the making as crazy as that sounds. Started when I got the M&P stripped lower for 50 bucks at a gun show. Then just kept collecting parts as I found good deals on them. Barrel is a BCM light weight barrel, WMD NiB-X BCG+hammer. Stock came with the buffer tube, buffer, and spring for 20 bucks local. Might change that out to a MFT stock, not sure yet. I like the ALG hand guard but hated the stupid shim system, would rather the wrench have a 1/2 drive on it and use a TQ wrench. The muzzle device is not on right since it was in the mail as I was walking out the front door for a trip to the mountain house, I don't have a vice up here to tighten it down. I tested it without a muzzle device then just hand threaded the birdcage till I get back home. Right at 600 bucks total for the build. Ran the 1 mag I tested without issue. Maybe tomrrow i'll try bench resting it and seeing how accurate it is but this is my first non 22LR rifle so i'm not a great rifle shot yet. Gonna keep my eyes open for a deal on a budget red dot, maybe the halosun one or something like.

Also look at this pic, what is the purpose of the bigger red dot? Both have no magnification, both seem the same in brightness and modes. I know these models have different reticles but the micros so come with the dot inside a circle reticle the bigger unit has. I don't see why you wouldn't just always go for the micro reddot over the bigger style.
