Is it normal to have trouble with katakana past the initial beginner stage? I'm by no means fluent or even advanced, but I can at least read "normal" VNs without a texthooker, and yet I often need to sub-vocalize katakana words to figure them out unless it's extremely common stuff that I see all the time. How do I fix this? Is it even possible to fix it?

personally I think the biggest problem with katakana is their retarded way of spelling foreign words, mostly english though... when you read japanese movie titles of hollywood movies for example you feel like getting a stroke

Yep, pretty much. I also have troubles with reading (and writing) katakana words, but, just like most vocabulary, once you get used to it it becomes easy to spot and read.
We just assume it's hard because it's an "obvious" word to our foreigner eyes, but coded in a strange way. If you really think about it, it's still easier to learn than complex kanji stuff or onomatopoeic words.

を marks the direct object of a verb (not all verbs take direct objects - revise transitive and intransitive verbs).
Also keep in mind that particles describe the word in front of them - you shouldn't think "I'm using a verb so I'll add an を before it", but instead think "this word is the direct object so I'm adding を to the end of it".
It's the particles themselves that describe the word's function in a sentence, not the order like in English. You can actually play around with word order because as long as you still have the right particles attached to the words it'll still make sense.
Belgium already answered your question but I also wanted to point out that は can actually replace を if the object is also the topic (even though that isn't actually the case here).

i think you should focus on learning hiragana and basic grammar so that you understand the basics of how the japanese language works. i then suggest getting a few children's picture books and letting her read them for you, and you could try reading for her. teaching a language is very difficult, and trying to have a conversation will be difficult too. but reading a book together can be a shared experience despite the language barrier, that you can learn from. i'm sure she would be happy too that you want to learn japanese.

I read the first volume of YrYr with an English translation available to check every time I didn't get anything. Would check every other panel.
Now I'm doing the same with vol. 2 and checking barely every other page, and for points that are not so key to the story.

This is going faster than I thought.
I learned English playing FFV, in the beginning I couldn't for the life of me say why the pirates kept shouting "hat" (Cap'n! Cap'n! Cap'n!), and by the end I was understanding pretty much all of the story.
FF is what, 50 hours long at best?

I guess we also get better at getting nuance and vocabulary in a specific type of work after getting used to it, staying in the same universe with the same expectations of characters creates a sense of confidence.

Alright been studying Hiragana and Katakana for the few past days and now I feel ready to start with Kanji and Vocab. Would it make sense to use the Kadansha book + Anki for Kanji and a simple core 2k6k Anki deck for vocab? Would 15 kanji+ 15 vocab a day be doable?

most people recommend reading from the very beginning and adding words to anki as you go using yomichan (if using chrome) or rikaikun (if using firefox), also called mining, instead of using premade decks.

Also there is a debate about as to whether to study kanji at all. I'm in the camp of doing just vocabulary but I'm too early in my study to say whether it worked for me or not.

まず、未来が響の音楽プレイヤーでシヴァイウィングの曲を聴いた時、何故驚いたの?って事ですが、この時未来は「響がシヴァイウィングの事を本当にどう思っているのか分からない」状態でした。
何でそんな意思疎通が出来てない状態になったのかは、冒頭に簡単な小説としてそっと置いておきます。文字が潰れてたらごめんなさい。
あっちを読むのが面倒だって方は、「ライブの惨劇後、未来が響に対して罪悪感を思えてシヴァイウィングの話題は出しにくかった」とだけ理解していただければ。
で、内心どうやってリディアンを勧めようか悩んでた未来ですが(リディアンには翼さんが在学している為、もしシヴァイウィングに何か思う所があれば勧めにくい)響が聴いていたのがシヴァイウィングの曲だったので、色々思う事はあるが勧める決心がついた、という流れです。

次に、響のお母さんの電話について。相手は響の通う中学校の、それなりに上のほうの人という設定です。
学校側が「安全の為に、登校を控えたほうがいい。テストだけ受ければ特別に出席扱いにするよ」と言ってきたのに対して、お母さんは不満そうにしてます。

実際、授業受けられないのに自主勉だけでテスト受けろとか、なかなかのハードゲームですよね。
響としては、これまでは周りに心配を掛けたくない一心で登校を続けていただけなので、学校生活自体に未練は持っていません。

最後に、未来がリディアンを「難関」と言っていた事。
リディアンが難関校というのは、あくまで想像です。
だって、授業料が安く、校舎の設備は整い、学生寮はその辺の賃貸より上等なんですよ?
更に現役トップアーティストが在学…これだけでも倍率はかなり上がりますよね。
しかも、「シンフォギアへの適合が見込まれた装者候補」以外は落とされていたみたいですから、世間一般からみれば、リディアンは成績だけでは入れない難関って認識だったのではないなか、と。

So why was Miki surprised when she heard Zwei Wing's song from Hibiki's MP3 player? It's because at this time Miki didn't know what Hibiki thought of them at this point in time. As for why this confusion arose, that's explained in the story at the start. If you're too lazy to read it, let's just say Miki felt guilty about the disaster and didn't want to bring up Zwei Wing. So Miki was unsure how she'd recommend Lydian, since Tsubasa's there, but when she realised Hibiki still listened to Zwei Wing she knew it would be fine.

And lastly, Miki called Lydian difficult to enter. This is just my imagination. After all its cheap, the facilities are good and the dorms are better than your average apartment? And one of the best artists in Japan is there... Since most people don't know about the Symphogear candidates, to them it must look like a really high-tier school, right?

For me, subordinated clauses. It can get particularly bothersome without punctuation (not even spaces).
For a more near-future issue, you'll notice Yotsuba is hella slurred, because they really write the way people speak. Takes some time to get used to it, but if you know the grammar behind if (even sparsely), you'll be able to figure it out.

So I've come to the conclusion that anime, and even to some extent drama, is awful for training listening comprehension. But not for the normal reasons. I don't think it hurts your Japanese or anything unless you're an idiot or watch nothing else. But essentially, I think they are relatively bad for study just because the density of speech is low. With podcasts and some variety shows and such you have people talking constantly, at a fast pace. Whereas with anime you have lines spoken slowly for dramatic effect, 10+ seconds of scenery introducing a scene, and more repetitive dialogue.

Basically what I want to say is, if you just want to get good and are doing large amounts of listening, you really should take into account the pure density of sentences. If you can listen to a podcast and hear 3 times as much Japanese as you would in the same amount of time watching anime, then (assuming it is all over 80% comprehensible) you are getting more than 3 times the value out of the same amount of time.

You should start making tables to condense what you know in a handy study guide.

See a verbal conjugation you don't know? Add it to the verbal conjugation section.
New use of a particle? Add it into that particle's sheet.

No use in going in and out of the same guides over and over again if you're not absorbing them.

Don't worry, I've been at it for 15 months and still can't read much more than Yotsuba shit, but I'm so much better now than I was around 10 months, it's not even funny. And I haven't even studied any grammar, so more than worrying about what you don't get, you should start worrying about what you do get and build your memories around sentences that work.

If it's too harsh on you, read alongside an English translation and treat it as a last resort.
Try reading a couple volumes like that, then going blind for the third one. If you're lost by the end of it, read volume 4 with a translation, then 5 blind. Keep doing this so you won't lose all motivation by hitting walls, if that's the kind of thing that bum you out.

Our teacher went over this in 301 how it's one of the differences between reading simple grammar sentences and reading real sentences. We had homework where we had to identify clauses. I think it helped. Perhaps you should get an intermediate-level book like Tobira.

Although I'll disagree it's impossible to reach my English level in Japanese. Specially by having real life experience, a year or two of immersion should do the trick. At least regarding the little knacks that give away a foreigner, but that's just for show.

If I want to say that nothing is different that before, do I include or exclude と in 「今までと何も変わらない」?

Just not sure if I need と for comparing states.
