All other unicode UTF-8 files in .rars/zips are all displayed/unzipped properly on my system and as far as I can tell from a quick web search UTF-8 was supported in even earlier versions of my software.

I don't think it's an issue with my setup.

The introduction of flags to DJT is going to encourage the development of thread personas which in turn makes off topic circlejerking easier. At least put us in /jp/ if you have to.

The flags honestly kill everything. Seeing all these non-american subhuman slimes posting and realizing how many of them there are posting in my DJT on a daily basis really opens my eyes. Maybe it should just be killed off after all. Not to mention that time when that bitch posted a vocaroo of her singing and some fag was praising her and no one said anything. This website is dead anyway.
>>
>>67888017
>>67888128
DJT received special permission to be on /a/ in the first place since it's not anime or manga. Mods therefore are not forced to permanently patrol them and moderate the community like they would with on-topic threads. DJT overstepped the mods' tolerance for shitposting after 4 years and so it went. Stop being so entitled.

>>67888843
The /djt/ guide itself is one of the best resources available. And the threads themselves are quite helpful if the question you are asking is something above the very very beginner level.

And if you take issue with /djt/ not spoonfeeding people translations, then that's /a/ culture at play here. You want that changed, again, need better moderation.

I've been thinking about this for a little bit now: is there a point where it's safe to "trim down" your anki deck? Like say, purge all cards that have intervals of 3+ years? 5+ years? No idea.

It feels like at that point, it would be almost impossible to forget those words provided you still read things semi-regularly.

>>67889425
Whatever number of new cards you do consistently per day will come back tenfold as reps in ~2 weeks. If you can handle a few extra reps occasionally, why not?

Just remember that consistency is the most important factor in studying, not speed.
>>
>>67889474
shouldnt you be lined up at centerlink
>>
>>67889425
Why not go past your reading quota instead?
>>
>>67889452
When you are reading regularly - and not just manga/LN/VN, but real books and nonfiction as well - it is probably a good time to stop. As long as you are frequently using the language, you should eventually stop doing anki altogether.

Flashcards are just a simple way to get knowledge into your brain quickly. Use is how it gets cemented.

I mean I certainly don't use flashcards for English. Do you?
>>
>>67889767
because I can't read :(
>>
>>67889769
Actually I have used flashcards for English for the very occasional unknown word I encountered while reading, and I'm an English native.

It seems helpful for words I don't encounter often at all, stuff like inimical, perfunctory, intransigent etc. Since I don't have a whole lot of them it barely takes any time.

So you're basically taking up hard drive space in your brain for no reason at all. Words like that might as well not even exist. If you've lived for 20+ years and need to use a flashcard to remember a word in your native language I think it's safe to say it's useless. It's not like you can use words like that when talking to someone without getting a weird look and "huh?" then looking like a pretentious asshole.
>>

While I think that's weird, it sounds like your solution would be to move your Japanese studies to that kind of system.
There is really no point in having a card that is due next to show up in 3 years after you've already been studying for a year.

I think your time would be better spent on studying more complex grammar or speaking then flashcards that you already know.

Even if I won't use the words in my vocabulary actively, I feel it's still worth knowing passively. For example, I don't always read scientifically / academically inclined material, but when I do, it's very useful to know some of the words associated. I certainly wouldn't use the words when talking with friends or even co-workers (not in a related field), but it saves me from having to look it up in future.

Also, a lot of times the words aren't frequently used because they're sort of overly specific. It aids in understanding whatever the author is trying to communicate more precisely, and to me, I wouldn't call that useless. To each their own, though.

Either way, I'm not particularly fussed about it, since they're uncommon enough I barely get any reps to do per week.

How can one tell if it's name? Also in terms with Kanji-written names, how to know the right reading?
>>
>>67890227

literally why
>>
>>67890318
because apparently it's a big part of japanese culture, many times more so than 4chan is to the west.
>>
>>67890298
You can usually tell from context what kanji are names instead of words. Reading is a game of guessing if there is no furigana
>>
>>67890359
You're thinking of 2ch
>>
>>67890298
Over time you get to know a bunch of the more common names, also it's usually fairly obvious when someone is referring to someone by name. In a lot of cases, the author will include furigana over a newly introduced character's name, as well.

>>
>>67891019
Manga tends to use more realistic language used in daily conversation.

I get that it's easier to learn words with a text hooker but you'll probably pick up too much chuuni language if VNs are your main source of practice.

I can't argue with that.

I would agree that VNs are fucking awesome practice, though. Just pick a VN with a realistic setting if you want to avoid the Chuuni language. I know we're not on /a/ anymore so maybe there are a few people who actually want to move to Japan or have conversations with Japanese people.

Somewhere in the in the DJT COR there was a guide on how to make anki pretty, it had different font with blue text and a black-ish background, does anyone have the link handy?

it probably also kept a lot of people from using WaniKani, which was being viralled all over the place
I don't think anyone from the beginning of /djt/ is still here, I would think that people stay for a few months and then leave once they either quit due to the diffculty or get good enough to read whatever they're interested in. Taiwan is based, tradchink is the only true and unsoiled pictograph language worth of appraisal.

Japanese is the most frankensteined of all, centuries of autism condensed in a writing system full of exceptions and makeshifts.

But I have come to enjoy the pain.
>>
>>67905113
Lol taiwan uses simplified characters too.
爲>為
裏>裡
臺 can use 台
etc

Also, the reason why Chinese is simplified as such is because the main point of it was to switch to pinyin style writing, but it failed after the illiterate learnt the first batch of simplified characters. The second batch of simplified characters were roughly implemented but scrapped (such as 樱>桜 道>辺) due to unpopularity. There were little adjustments afterwards however to revert those undesirable 1st batch and implement those desirable 2nd batch. The original goal of the simplification is completely different. In contrast, the Shinjitai is simplified for the sake of simplification itself.
>>
>>67901364
I get what you mean. Taiwan and Hong Kong are still badass because of the 繁体字.

Mainland China has a weird inconsistency with simplified characters. Some characters are logically simplified while others were obviously overlooked. It's really fucking strange.
