Old thread sucked ass. Lets do better.
No resolution rules, that's getting a bit dated as monitors support larger resolutions and there are no mods to enforce rules so whats the point. If you want your art critiqued provide a decent, reasonable photo or scan and people will be happy to view and give feedback.

Everyone knows that I take shortcuts in my art. Tracing and paintover photos at times but they don't care. They know I've got the skills to do it all freehand. They understand my situation, they know it's just what professional artists do (especially concept artists). It's all about time and once it becomes a part of your workflow you do it without thinking about it.
It's a moral grey area but no one cares as long as you're a legit artist and don't just steal from the reference 100%. It's a terrible thing to do if you're working on studies or a beginner though. You're not exactly working as a pro at that point so time isn't as important.
It also looks awful if you try to do that if you're a beginner. You just don't have the knowledge to properly make stylistic changes or counter-act the distortion of a camera nor do they know enough about the principles to properly blind things together. This is why when artists like Ricky Martinez do it, it's looks awful.
The only people that care are the jealous and haters...

great anatomy and line work, you can tell
i see a lot of talented artists doing line art with a brush that has little to no width variation, which kind looks like what you did, any reason for that?

>>3041997

>>3041997

>>3042001
I don't think it's something I consciously chose to do. I just feel I have more control and can add more detail with thinner lines and big canvases. Of course, both techniques have their advantages and disadvantages, and it mostly boils down to preference.
I played around a bit with silhouettes and lineweight a few weeks back, and it was an interesting experience. I found that it was easier to create a sense of depth and form when you really push the lineweight, because the two sides of a thick line serve different purposes in defining the shape of what you're drawing, and it's easier to create the illusion of overlapping forms by drawing over something or carving something out with an eraser.
I've been stuck in my comfort zone for far too long, so I really should branch out and experiment more.
>>3042016
thanks, that's really helpful. what i'm getting is basically that carving out the line weight instead of relying on the pen pressure for it gives you more control and keeps you more conscious of the form. neato burrito
>>3042026
You get slightly different effects. If you draw with lineweight and you're good at it, I think you get more dynamic lines, but when you carve over a line with an eraser, the overlapping effect creates a sense of form. The best example would be the right girl's ribcage and stomach.
I really don't have much experience with this though, so I might be talking out of my ass.
>>3041997
Did you reference this off something?
>>3042045
No. I occasionally use reference for feet if they're in focus or need to be foreshortened, but I generally draw without reference.
>>3042022
>"Don't have a blog"
>>3042052
I thought it kind of looked like this but I guess it's just a pretty common pose.
>>3042080
Well, that's unfortunate. It does look similar enough for someone to accuse me of using it as reference, but I didn't.
Hard for me to prove a negative, though.
>>3042102
To prove it you must create a pose that is unquestionably one of a kind.

>>3042136
I have a couple questions
1.) Do you color/add value to your sketches
2.) Do you draw other subject matter
3.) How long have you been drawing and how old are you
4.) Are a hobbyist or working professional ?
First time trying futa thoughts?
>>3042440
thanks! i'm going to really push myself to get good this year. here's a render practice I just finished, trying to be loose and use only 1-2 brushes and a mixer brush.
>>3042453
This is just so bad. It's embarrassing. Your anatomy and perspectives need a lot of work. Coloring just makes it look even worse than it could've.
>>3042454
Damn! I really like what you're doing with your brush work. Need to start limiting myself with my brushes too. I've started experimenting with the smudge tool with a textured brush for blending (textured so you won't get that Brad Rigney-esque airbrushed look). You could try that too. Makes doing painterly shit a little quicker...

Continuing my Shriek fan art thingy. Decided that it's not gonna be Shriek after all because nobody gives a flying fuck about Shriek...
Going for dat Applibot vibe with this. Still playing around with the clone stamp trying to create interesting shapes and trying to build up my values before going into fine detail/color. Probably gonna need to kill the darkest blacks and lightest whites at some point. Also gonna kill the rim lights. They're just place holders.
I might add a staff to her hand on our left to get a little diagonal action going. Probably gonna have the hand on the right have one of those "magic fire" thingies like she's making a spell or some shit.
Give me some feedback. Color ideas would be cool too.
>>3042175

>>3042651
i like the armor and body shading so far. the claws on her right hand (our left) don't all need to be curved down, some of the claws should probably be angled more towards the viewer since that's where the palm is facing.
your biggest challenge here will be the face and the lighting. find references for the face, make sure it is the strongest part of the piece by the time you're done. right now it can use some work, especially with the nose.
For lighting, look at multiple applibot artist's work and see how they handle lighting a dynamic pose. the most non-obvious part is the bounce light and diffuse light. i still suck at lighting so i can't really give you specifics.
anyone see something wrong with her expression? im going for a "head pulled back in surprise" kind of look. feels off somehow, but i cant pin-point what.
>>3042668
the head is a bit squished i think.
>>3042662
Thanks a lot for the feedback bro! I was the guy talking about your brushwork before btw. The textured smudge thing I was talking about was something I did for her stomach area.
I'll probably do a staff on the arm on our left like in the pic I'm posting now. You're right about those nails...
I really need to give a lot of love to the face. Gonna spend several hours on that. I don't normally draw females so this is going to be extremely fucking hard. I really want to have the top part of her face in the shade to give her a bit of a mysterious look (even if it's not a 100% realistic).

did more to this, would really appreciate some crits, guys.
>>3042796
Would be nice to hear what you were going for with this. It's kind of hard to give a crit otherwise. Like what goals did you have going into this?
>>3042797
fundamental painting. thin wash of darks, with thick lights and colors on top of it. I tried doing my underdrawing in charcoal instead of pencil, and I focused less on making every step of the painting perfect, and instead on working from ugly to appealing.
A problem I was having was that I was afraid for the painting to look ugly at any point in the process. I was starting an area without an underpainting, and just slowly filling in the canvas. With this one my goal was to build it up over time.
In the end this painting took me about an hour, and normally if I was just painting freehand and filling in the canvas it would take me three or four.
But my goals and process aren't as important as critiquing the painting itself. My goal was a nice self portrait. Did I succeed?
>>3042801
Well I like the overall colors in this but some of the facial features are slightly unappealing to me. Like how close the eyes are to each other and that sagging right nostril you made. I don't know if those are facial features that you have and just exaggerated. That's why I was asking about your goals.
With a strong lime green background I'd expect more green hues in the shadows. I recommend looking at Sargent's stuff for some fill light ideas.
You might want to start your next piece with a wash/sketch that's close to your BG color and working to build more local color over that.
GJ anywayz...
>>3042810
Maybe I should make the background a more blue green than a green yellow. It might make the shirt less distracting and bring more focus on the face
>>3042810
Also yeah my eyes are close together and I have big nostrils. I'm kind of ugly
>>3042796
Was the head painted excessively large to match your ego or are you just that shit?
>>3042811
I dunno about that. I don't think the BG color is the issue. It's just that there's no sense of a fill light or cohesion with your shadows. I think you should just focus on this stuff on your next piece so you can build this stuff from the very start.
>>3042812
I feel-ya. I'm a balding midget with a fivehead myself <3. Feels good man.
>>3041980
amazing brushwork, did you learn from any specific artists/books?
>>3042818
sorry i can't be as insecure and beta as you senpai :( one day maybe.
I think the blue background helped bring more attention to my face, and I added some more blue into the figure to match the background.
>>3042810
I changed a nostril and the eyes are more prominent so they don't look so weird. next time i'm gonna do a wash for the background so im not stippling onto wet paint.
>>3042854

That's really awesome man. If you can sculpt this stuff well in Zbrush it's gonna be super valuable for jobs in the gaming industry. I'm having slight problems with how big those hand and feet are. He seems to lack the muscle mass for carrying those properly in normal gravity. Looks good but doesn't look like it would animate well if you're thinking of 3D-stuff in general.
I did something relatively similar as my first Zbrush project. Yours is much more interesting though.

>meanwhile you look like this, you hideous fuck.
>>3043202
That sculpt is really damn inspiring, do you have anywhere that you post your work at all? Going to be grinding the ZBrush stuff this year hoping to make some strides, it's a great piece of software. i have some experience but I want to start putting together real portfolio pieces and familiarise myself with the entire workflow (Retopologising and UV Unwrapping go completely over my head)
I can definitely see where you are coming from in regards to the size of the hands and feet, I've been back and forth on them a few times myself, the hands were initially supported by a skin membrane (like a bat's wing) but then I got caught up in the logistics of trying to make this guy realistically able to fly, or at least glide but I ended up with these uncannily large extremities which I thought could be interesting for a species maybe adapted for climbing on a slightly lower gravity world, he does look like he'd have a bit of trouble even lifting them now you mention it
Sincere thanks for your help/feedback, as you say I think it's pretty important to take into account how they'll move and function in 3D when desigining these things

HAHAHAHAHAH HOLY FUCKING SHIT!
The parents of Brian Comforti, 20, of Fairfield reported him missing on Sunday. He was last seen on Friday, April 5, and last spoken to on Sunday, April 7.
Police believe Comforti purchased a train ticket going to New York City on Wednesday, April 10. It is unknown if he actually took the train to New York City or if he is still in the Fairfield area.
Investigators are working with the Metro North and New York City police to attempt to locate Comforti, according to Lussier.
Comforti’s vehicle was located on the north side of the Fairfield Center train station, with the keys and his cell phone inside the vehicle. There is no indication that he is in danger or taken against his will, Lussier said.
He reportedly left on his own and has not been in contact with family or friends since and usually does keep in communication.

Paper: is some really cheap cartridge paper
Pens: Pigma Micron Fineliners (the pack that has 005-08, but I use 01,03,05 and 08)
I also started messing with colored felt tip pens.

I also use random colored pencils that I have laying around.

IS this what Brian looks like?
This isn't really worth posting yet but eh why not?
Was just fiddling with a character I'm making and will post the actual picture here when i start it.
The character's ability is that she can spawn excess limbs of various kinds from underneath her garb. So she can have like 6 arms coming out from all angles, or 6 legs etc. She also has long thick hair running from her head down spine that is tied up into a number of knots. This gives her a bit of a bulky profile which I thought was a bit neat
>>3045208
looks pretty good already.
You just need to know ambient lighting well
>>3045260
I like the concept, but the drawing does not depict it well (not that it's bad).
Consider making the garment a little more flowy (like silk) so that you can specifically identify some hands underneath.

It's tough to critique someone when there isn't one or two things that can be fixed. Keep studying art books do master studies etc, the information will stick just keep at it.

Fuckin woah good stuff
>>3045559
Try going out of your comfort zone more, use thicker or thinner paint maybe, or different brushes. Maybe even completely new ways of applying paint, like with a palette knife. Good luck mate
>>3045563
This might be true but you should still push yourself to improve faster, consider what you're trying to achieve/improve before you start a painting
Also posting my shitty work cause why not
>>3046420
thanks, sorry for that huge resolution, wrong file
>>3041067
thanks for featuring my drawing. I am so slow on this one.
>>3046448
Holy shit that looks great anon
>>3046451
thanks mate!
>>3046448
what the fuck. Is this ink?
>>3046448
Was this inspired by something in particular? I'm not accusing you of plagiarizing or even referencing something else, but it has a certain familiar feeling to it. It's like a mix of classical art and Moebius' Blueberry.
Either way, good job. Everything from the sketching and hatching, to the composition, gestures and expressions are spot on. You're making it very hard for me to find a reason to hate you, and I'm a professional asshole.
>>3045208
nice one. How was your process? Did you do under-sketches then put the colours in or did you just eye the shapes out and add on layers/cut along the way?
>>3047120
This is my first landscape painting, go easy senpais
Just finished this, OG character.
what about this one ?
>>3046649
no it's a pencil brush in clip studio paint
>>3046656
lol thanks that's alright. Tavern scenery is my most favourite theme in fine arts, so I've been collecting many artbooks about dutch painting and tronies. before I start drawing I flip though these books to get hyped, so you could say that I use references, but very loosely and what I try more is to catch the spirit and the essence, the atmosphere of these genre paintings.
>>3046021
I like the expression on the guy's face, but that's about it.
My main issue with your drawings are the lack of depth. You should play around a bit with line weight.
Otherwise. Keep at the fundies.
I'm losing my mind, can anyone suggest what I do with the kid in the foreground?
Maybe I've just been staring at it too long today but I can't seem to get her to look right, like I've over shaded her, but then when I try to reduce the values she looks flat. Maybe a different outfit? Different pose?
If anyone has any ideas about that or anything else before I finish this thing I'd appreciate it.
>>3041997
are those... cat tats?
>>3047301
You're pretty well out of my league so take it with a grain of salt, but the only suggestion I can offer about the kid (she looks mostly fine to me) is to do something about her feet, specifically her right foot.
>>3047301
As the other dude said. You're way out of my league, so do what you want with it.
But I'd try and make the skirt look a bit see-through and allow some light to shine through. Not for sexy reasons, but to create a sense of depth and make it look less stale and more like fabric.
And is the anatomy of the legs correct? It's hard to see, but it looks wonky.
>>3047301
Yeah as the other anon said its in the girls feet. Do something to them. Otherwise that looks amazing
>>3047305
No?
>>3047311
I agree. Her feet look weird. Looks like shes dragging her foot like a zombie. Maybe also too simple in rendering and lost in ground compared to the rest of her. Same for her hand. Gets lost. Would be better raised and more expressive, and getting hit with some rim light from the left to give it more contrast. Knife needs to stand out more too.
>>3047326
>Knife needs to stand out more too.
Didn't even see it, so yeah.
>>3047121
I did a study of the same picture some time ago, what a coincidence we would both search for forests on google images! I feel like you should start using a full opacity hard brush, you gotta think about controlling your edges, using a low opacity brush just messes them all up. It makes things look like they are blurry and out of focus, which you might want to do on certain parts, but not for the entirety of the leaves and the ground. It also seems like you should have pushed the bright parts brighter, in the original pic the center is being hit by sunlight, in yours that is lost, the light doesn't look strong enough to form that contrast, squint your eyes and compare the original pic with yours while you are painting, it will help you get the values right. Keep at it mate, watch those edges and values and you'll see huge improvement really quickly.
>>3047128
This is cool, what is it for? I feel like you nailed the composition, gives off that sense of dread and intrigue.
>>3047301
Holy shit this is turning out awesome! You've been working on this for a good while. I remember seeing the sketch work a while back. There's something weird with the foreshortening. If I look at the kid on the left side (green lines) and the height of the female in the foreground (red lines) I feel like their heights are too close to each other. I tried playing with some of the proportions of the characters. I'm not saying that what I did is better or more correct it just seems more right TO ME so take it with a grain of salt.
Made the main female taller and the guy on the left slightly taller. I'm guessing that you have a perspective grid that you can refer to. Just my 2 cents. GJ anywayz.
>>3047301
>>3047372
Oh yeah and to add to this: Even if I did get the height of the female wrong (I'm no expert) you might want to move her closer to the camera. That way you'll absolutely get her to be slightly bigger in the image so the viewers can get a better read on the knife in her hand (didn't notice it either). Kind of depends on what you're trying to say with the image. To me it's all about the relationship between the girl and the goat. Like she's the only one who can see the huge animal? Like it's her hallucination or something? Correct me if I'm wrong, but anyways I think that making her bigger by bringing her closer to the camera would emphasize this idea of the image being about her and the giant imaginary goat...

the rails are too far apart. Typically (european) streetcars use metre gauge, but yours look like about 1,7m, which is too wide even for standard gauge (1 435 mm).
>>3047125
Straight outta 80s-90s anime
Not that that's a bad thing
>>3047349
Treebro here, thanks a ton for the advice! In your pic, what brush shape is that, just hard round? Also if you don't mind what are some good general brush settings?
>>3041067
I made something I'm happy with. :)
>>3047475
check your pen pressure sensitivity
>>3047478
New tablet, doesn't respond to changing the settings.
Thinking to pretend that it's muh styllee?
>>3047440
Back then I was using Sketchbook pro to paint, it was simply a hard rectangle brush, but a round should do fine too since it's what I'm using now on photoshop. I don't mess much with brush settings, I have one hard round for edges and a soft one for blending, now and then I activate the "pressure controls opacity" setting if I need it, I never touch flow. I've heard it's bad to have flow and opacity both not at 100%, but I don't know how true that is. Maybe someone else can give you more tips on it, but hopefully what I said helps :)
>>3047325
shame
Blow me?
did a painting
>>3047600
anatomy is all kindsa fucked up my dude. I like it tho, has a cheesy movie poster/fantasy novel cover feel to me.
Hey, what am i doing wrong, what can i improve on?
>>3047301
this looks positively bananas in this ratio. I get how you can want to lead the eye up from the girl towards the ram, but god damn this thing feels claustrophobic. I think a wider canvas, with a busier street scene and a more standout main character would've been more effective. I get compositionally why you would do this portrait sized, but it just doesn't work. It feels super cramped.
Also in places you are forgetting to work light over dark. Some of the edges connecting the shadows to the light aren't crisp, and are really muddy on the ram. It looks like you are working the light and dark simultaneously and correcting things instead of just going dark to light.
>>3047655
yeah i see right shoulder It looks very strange to me and yes Is inspired by the old horror film posters!
messi study for a still life
did it from life so my values got fucked
>>3047713
What's that supposed to be? A gutted animal?
>>3047718
Shell and some roses, distorted beyond recognition. Thought I'd have some fun with it before I start the actual one
>>3047743
>Thought I'd have some fun with it
dude that thing looks like you were sweating bullets and nervously redoing everything the whole time. Nothing about that says "I was having fun"
>>3047747
not everyone has the same idea of "fun", you homoerotic trans fag
>>3047759
if your idea of fun is THAT thing... jesus. masturbating is fun, that looks like it was hell.
>>3047763
Hey, I'm not that guy, but quit being a fucking dick. Assholes like you shit up this board with unconstructive put downs because you're a lazy shitter who procrastinates all day and doesn't create any art so you come here to boost your fragile ego.
>>3047827
>just having a conversation
Of course it's you Brian, acting like an asshole as you often do

anon. Fuckboytown, USA
How the fuck do kimonos work, I can't decide wether to make it like a mini skirt or just go full leggings.
>>3046448
Damn this is looking good. hoping to see it finished.
>>3047948
Her eye seems to be in a weird place. Far apart. Too small and weird. Everything else is quite nice and that's why I'm saying this. In most generic masks the highest part is where the nose is. You know. Like Scorpion and Sub Zero? So that's where I'm assuming your female character mask is going. I think you should draw here face without the mask and hair and try adding them afterwards so you're absolutely sure that her facial features are right. Hope this helps...
>>3047948
>>3047962
I went ahead and did a little overpainting for you. Hope this illustrates what I was saying earlier. My style is pretty western but I still think you got some of the proportions kind of weird... Love your line work anywayz da-a-a-awwwghh...
>>3047948
Look's like lochner's piece.
>>3048009
stefan lochner ? wtf where is the likeness ?
Hey guys, what u guys think?
>>3047540
Was this all done on one layer? Diggin the face topography
>>3048036
What are you trying to do? If it's just "Nothing Idunnolol" I think you're not in the right place...
>>3048038
Nice clouds and nice rendering but your composition doesn't work imo. Try adding a character into your scene. You don't have to have him/her in your final illustration but it helps to illustrate where you want your focus...
p-plz crit
>>3048038
>>3048044
Quick overpainting thingy. Something to think about. I'm not saying you should add an actual character or anything. Just some kind of focus on some parts of the image ya know.
>>3048059
Looks pretty good at this point. Neck looks a little bumpy but other than that it's awwkay. Render it a bit and we'll see...
>>3048070
>>3048044
At a loss of what to add honestly
>>3048087
I like the one with the castle in the BG. It could be fucking epic. Just have that dude from my final selection but have him on the ledge on the top right.
The one with the dude and his kids is just fucking boring.
The one with the master and his group could be cool if you can do it right but you might want to have the castle anyways because it's in the right spot and it could be interesting.
Just forget about the soldier thing imo. I's just fucking boring.
>>3048059
Right arm (our left) is a little awkward, looks really short
>>3048087
If you don't know what to add, just put in some birds
I really wanna draw/paint landscapes, but I'm really bad at it, the shitz all fucked up. Just need some heavy critiques and general advice when attempting to start a landscape
>>3048038
i tend to make new layers every few strokes then merge them when i'm pleased with them, so sort of
thanks
>>3043596
they fucking suck. the guy looks like a goddamn toilet. make new characters
Does anyone have experience with how to paint cloth, leather and other fabrics?
>>3048033
>>3043324
How do you approach this kind of task? Do you use reference of a different model and apply what you saw to it or do you build that stuff from the ground up from gesture to finish? Just curious as I am nowhere near to be able to do this.
>>3048732
oh yeah it does look somewhat similar, but I guess a female ninja in the middle of men is a pretty generic idea I guess. It looks like shit though.
Tried to control it a little more than usual got a bit boring towards the end. Would have liked to make it look more dramatic too but ah well
>>3048794
I draw the gesture from reference, while keeping the difference between the ref's proportions and the woman i saw in mind. Then i just construct and detail like normal.
