IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Just finished this. Looks like something you'd see on an autistic person's deviantart. Critique me please, I want to get better.

My self critique would be to have an idea of the pose and what I'd like to express with it combined with her facial expression before I draw. Because I didn't, her face looks blank and her pose doesn't express anything.
>>
>>3043384
I've read through this a number of times, I get what it is saying, "draw exactly what you see, not the idea of what you see"

I just struggle with seeing the shapes, especially when they get smaller like the folds of the eyelids etc.

I dunno I think I just haven't developed that part of my sight well enough yet. Back to drawing ref.
>>
>>3043394
Research gesture drawing, and make it a habit to draw as many as possible every day. Gesture is the basis of a good figure, upon which the volumes of the body can be modelled. But you need to think about the wireframe before you even consider details. It is fundamental.
>>
>>3043397
you're not suppose to SEE the shapes.
you're suppose to literally draw the shapes you saw.
>>
>>3043394
you dont need a critique, you need practice
go draw some more and look at her anatomy.

Dont try to draw a unique picture, try to recreate the reference.
>>
>>3043404
I know what gesture drawing is! I'm not really sure what you mean by wireframe though.

Do you have any gesture drawing tips I could have?

so you have to look at it, see the shapes, and draw the shapes you see exactly as they are, which is what I meant to imply when I was talking about seeing the shapes. I was really referring to my inability to see the shapes that I need to draw to begin with. Dunno if I'm making sense.

if not you should. It kind of looks like a man with long hair more than a woman, especially with that jawline and chin. Eyes and nose could use some work and eyebrows literally look drawn on. Lips could also use work, ears look pretty lazy.
>>
>>3043513
I can't tell if you're fishing for compliments or really that self deprecating. It looks good. The proportions are good, the color blocking is nice, it's a good drawing. It doesn't have to look exactly like the reference to be good.

It looks like a dude. Do you have a wide face like that? Just wondering because it's said that people tend to unknowingly make their drawings resemble them.

So here's a few things to point out. The face is too wide and square. The eyes are too close together. The nose is too small. Chin too big. Keep practicing with a reference.
>>

resize your images.

>art is all I have
No it isn't because judging by your work, you haven't spent much time doing art yet to be able to say that.

> I've been doing this for a year and I'm so bad it hurts.
Improving at art has nothing to do with your feelings. Remember that. The reason you're not improving can be narrowed down to how you practice, if you are studying correctly.

A year in drawing time doesn't amount to much. Art is not easy and you will be shitty at it in the beginning. What do you expect? Just keep practicing.
>>

>>
>>3043570
>Art is all I have because it's the only thing I'm mildly good at.
That's negligible. You've just started. You barely know what art is at this point to claim something like that.

>someone who's still young and insanely good.
Age has nothing to do with it. Whoever it is,, they worked hard for their skills and earned it. Maybe they've been practicing longer than you have or study better, you never know. It's kinda shitty of you to make comparisons like that though.

I've tried before to copy the upside-down Igor Stravinsky and other similar beginner exercises, but I can't even get half the image done before getting too confused by all the lines and giving up. So I've been trying to design some characters I've had in my mind for some time now and I can't help but think they feel very off. Especially in the hands and feet.

What's the proportions for spacing the scapulae?
>>
>>3043578
Well, learn how the masters drew.
Learn the bean bag method of drawing humans. It's actually a lot more effective in drawing humans from imagination than the Loomis meme (I'm trying to become a key pose animator or a comic artist so I might be a bit biased here). In animation drawings, gesture and form are the biggest components to their appeal aside from being correctly timed and spaced. Then find their sketchbooks or artbooks and start drawing like them if you really want to be like them I suppose. You can check out the art book thread, I'm currently trying to study the Yoshinari sketches to make my figures more animated and natural.

It looks like one of those meme images that uses the mirror effect. First off the eyes are way too fucking close and the jaw is too wide. Women's faces should be drawn like "heart" shapes; this means that it starts from the jawline and gradually gets wider as you go upward toward the cranium.

Hey /ic/, I've been trying to get back into digital drawing, but I'm struggling with the settings of my tablet.
I'm using an old wacom bamboo that used to do the job, but now it seems like it doesn't detect small motions of the stylus for some reason. I have to trace long lines, or there won't be any line at all (the tablet thinks I just "clicked").
Has this happened to anyone before? Don't know what to do about it, and yes I've been trying it on several programs.

Saying 'muscle through it' makes it sound boring, instead of drawing a bunch of boring shit like vases and flowers draw fun stuff. It doesn't matter what you draw from life as long as you're drawing what you see and learning basics of object construction, perspective, shading, understanding light sources, and weight. Have a cool vodka bottle? Draw it. Have a weird mug? Draw it. Have a gun? Draw it. Go outside and find a building you think is cool and sketch out its basic perspective. If you want to draw people go to the mall and people watch, gesture people as they walk by or stand around texting. If you have friends who play a lot of vidya draw them, gamers are great to draw because they don't really move around very much. Most people love to have someone draw them so just ask friends/family to stand around for 30 seconds while you do a quick gesture. If you can't stand around somewhere for too long take a quick pic of people buzzing around at a store and get a bunch of candid postures.
They only thing I would heavily advise against drawing would be figurines, your symbol drawing might kick in and you'll stop drawing what you see.

I would strongly encourage you to attempt the drawing as a rough sketch using simple shapes. (Boxes, etc) While doing so, ask yourself whether you can see a certain plane of a facial feature or not. Ask whether it is tilting, twisting, foreshortened, etc.
>>3043917
Aside from not resizing the image, looks good. Though I would make a stronger attempt at showing the brow ridge/eye sockets

Your fear for not shading, stems from the fear of destroying something you cherish.

Thinking in this way prevents growth, because if you make a drawing and you like it, then someone tells you that its not good. You're going to ignore it because you're not willing to make mistakes or take a chance to ruin what you created.

To fix a drawing you will have to ruin what it was previously in order to get it to become something new

buy a big wad of printer paper and a clipboard for around 5 dollars, problem solved. I don't really think you need to do it every day and drawing smaller isn't the best idea but you still could. You should fit at least 5 figures on a page of standard sized printer paper
>>

ah, I didn't realize printer paper was so cheap. I had been using a sketchbook that I found lying around my room, so it felt a bit precious, but yeah that should do it.

start with the fundies of course, grind that for a month or more until it starts getting easier and better quality (doesn't have to be perfect, but of a good quality)

start with basic circles, then spheres and cubes, then cubes in perspective, etc.
basically read the sticky.

Probably the best pen of it's kind (plastic tip or whatever), but I prefer ohto graphic liner. I think I am in the minority here since most people genuinely enjoy the pen, but I did not like the feel of a plastic tip. Overall a decent pen (better than micronpen), but not my favorite.

I've learned that a good design usually comes with an interesting silhouette. Your design's silhouette is basically a human with weird ears.

You can do much more fish related stuff with his body and still keep him humanoid (Like fins on his arms/legs)
Do some research about other fish-men designs (Don't outright steal a design tho, it's only meant as inspiration)
Also do some research about different kinds of piranhas and what makes them piranhas. And I cannot stress looking for an interesting silhouette enough.
>>
>>3045085
Right now hes a hunchback midget.
Fix the spine, make his legs longer
Also, don't use shitty air brushy effects when coloring

I haven't slept in days all I've been drawing is slightly less shitty versions of some guy I made up. Should I get some sleep or is it a better idea to do some more? I feel like I'm on the edge of face proportions being good and I don't wanna forget in my sleep
>>
>>3045499

>>
>>3045453
When drawing the face head on, you should be able to fit an eye length between each side of each eye

Divide the head horizontally into fifths, then youll have your eye lengths

As for lips, the outer edges of the upper lip should be darker and get lighter as they go in, don't putline the lower lip, just hint at its existence by showing the shadow underneath it

As for your art, work on construction, when I draw faces, I spend most of my time trying to construct the head before i render it

Also, don't be afraid to use the entire spectrum of pencil (5h-6b) it really helps emphasize detail. You can better show the highlights of the face by having a skin tone that isnt already paper white

How to improve? Learn anatomy, and learn perspective. You have no skill in either, and you're drawing crude 3rd grade cartoons. There's no point in trying to help you until you take art seriously and start at the beginning.
The lower legs look as terrible as everything else in the image.

I use a graphite stick to do basic shading on the whole head, then go in after and add smaller details with charcoal, then add smaller details with a blending stump and my fingers

>>
>>3045898
how do i get gud at shadows and learn all the terminology and stuff?
>>
>>3045901
terminology is not important, as for shadows, copy the values you see, if there's an important detail that gets swallowed by shadows, consider highlighting the edges of it.

also, I use charcoal because it adds a larger value scale, and it really makes my whites bright

learn to use the whole value scale, and use it to copy what your eyes see, not what you think it should look like

also take into account the planes of the face (when you have no reference) where will the light hit them
