As I awoke, I was met with a blinding light. I could not move, but every nerve in my body was screaming out. As the light dimmed, I found myself surrounded by a thousand creatures from an origin I know not. The point thingy between his eyes feels like it's going sideways, not in the same direction as his face orientation.

Are you planning to fill in the left side? Otherwise, crop it. Now your composition is extreeeeeeeemely unbalanced, while the clouds are leading the eye just straight off the page.

it was a general experimentation with the gouache. i dont like relying on lines and i want to be able to do more actual painting but i'm not sure how to start without lines or how to make them less obvious. but rest assured i dont like them. is there some process to recommend i could try out to not use line in a traditional medium? i know how its done in digital but no in traditional with watercolor formats.
>>
>>3032723
Way better, really like that first one. Thank you so much
>>
>>3033002
Really just draw lighter and looser, and then rely on edges or changes in value/hue instead of line.

Think hb or 2d pencil and just getting the general shapes down, and maybe drawing in the core shadows/separation between light and dark on each form.

Also if you want to go lighter, you need to use less water 3ith your application for the gouache to become opaque

You seriously need to customize the pressure curve to be able to do anything in Procreate

Procreate is super streamlined and slick but I prefer paintstorm for the superior brush engine, and not having to click to open the color wheel. It takes guts to delve into though, as you'll have to customize your own brushes to really hit home. but I'd strongly recommend it once you're comfortable working with the ipad.

I actually transferred Greg Rutkowski's and Aaron Griffins photoshop brushes for use in paintstorm. Procreate won't open the brush pngs sadly. Rutkowski's texture brushes are ace though.

If any of you want them drop an email

Quick question.

I felt like the bodies I've been drawing have been too stiff and unnatural looking during my construction practice; some other anons pointed it out too. I started using Drawabox and finishing up on lesson 1 and plan to complete it in it's entirety since it's been a great help to get over my fear of failure, but I'm not completely sure if it'll help me with my gestures.

Is there a decent tutorial, guide, or hopefully, a book to help me improve on my gestures? I also don't draw from gesture references too often but I feel like I should also get to know some ground rules for gesture drawing.

Drawabox is really only good until figure drawing

The Vilppu Drawing Manual and Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing start with gesture and build on that.

> hopefully, a book to help me improve on my gestures?

"Figure Drawing for Artists: Making Every Mark Count" by Steve Huston.

It's doubly valuable because Huston is both very experienced teacher tied through his whole life with ArtCenter which is one of the top art schools in USA AND accomplished painter on his own, being shown in galleries and whatnot.

Book is very good because it shows stuff that /ic/ talks about in disconnected way or not at all, and I mean the whole talk about doing gesture studies and construction.

Huston emphasizes (and rightfully so) gesture/structure priority, but in his workflow you naturally can fill your gesture with structure and he doesn't shy on both of those.

He also says some IMHO very important stuff about perspective in figure drawing and how to keep it, but without that heavy and unnecessary VP approach. It's even different from what krenz shows in his box method.

Anyway, read it, I think it is for you and generally seek for his videos on youtube, there's a lot of goodness in what he says, you just feel the years of experience from him. Even his Proko interview that isn't about techniques per se is golden.
>>
>>3034564

Try painting simple forms first to practice your value control.
Use only two values first, then three values. Don't try to blend.

Right now, you are just smearing random values onto a page until you get something close to an animal.

Nice values, but try to refrain from using saturated cools when adding shadows to the face. Shadows on the face can look blue, but don't be compelled to actually use much blue paint.
In the painting, you randomly used blue in conjunction with dark reds in the shadows, resulting in a "muddy" look.

In my paintover, I quickly evened out the shadow hues to demonstrate how you can simplify shadows.

Consider doing a painting with limited colors as an exercise in controlling hue and values at the same time without getting overwhelmed.
>>
>>3033347
looks great
the colors lack character imo, if I were you id add more contrast between cold and hot tones, the cold highlights could be more prominent, I would also add more color variation in the shadows. I would also change the bg's door, looks unappealing. or you could go for a deliberately low contrast result, almost sepia, although it would carry an entirely different message. it depends for the mood you're going for.

Hey. I love your style. Do you have a tumblr?
>>
>>3034959
there's only one thing for you to do at this point: study fundamentals, learn forms, lines, study how things look, and then copy them. study for half a year and then ask again. what to study? everything. get some books in the artbook thread, read them and work through them.

for colored pencils: stack thin layers of color over each other to get an even coat. don't overdo it though, like you did on the hair. generally, you want to mix colors to get an interesting look out of colored pencils. also, only one line at a time. take your time coloring with them, you don't want it to look like a child's drawing for mommy's fridge.

I hate rendering so much, it's not fun and it takes forever
>>
>>3035141

Looks pretty nice! if you want to make thing quicker you could probably start the rendering by using the lasso and pen tool with gradients or airbrush just in black and white and adding the hues later. The look will be different but I don't really know what you're going for... You can add the painterly strokes later too, though if you want to.

Hey guise. Just a 1.5h. sketch. I'm trying to split my workflow into bite sized parts because working on everything at once seems a little overwhelming at times.

I'm gonna try and do my version of Marvel's Shriek character.

This is just part one which is costume design so I'd like to get feedback on that specifically. I suck at fashion design and female anatomy so yeah... My overall workflow would be:

- Costume/character design
- Material studies
- Female anatomy studies
- Composition sketch (3 value block in)
- 3D block in
- Final painting

So yeah. What do you guys think of the costume? Is it too slutty/complex/simple? Also what do you guys think about working in a more iterative fashion? I'm still learning so I thought it might be a pretty good idea even though it's gonna be a bit slow...
>>
>>3035454
>Marvel's Shriek character.
I mostly feel it's too generic. Headed in the right direction, because I like it more than the original costume, it just doesn't have anything to hold interest. Can you add one element on what you try to achieve? Like, what makes it "your version of", what do you want to be different etc.?

Thanks for your thoughts. That's a great question I should be asking myself and I really don't know the answer yet. In the comics she's a magical, interdimensional, ex drug dealer who uses sound as a weapon.

My main idea was just: "If they were doing a rated R movie with this bitch what would I show the art director on day one". But yeah. It's definitely missing something. Dunno what...
>>
>>3035493
Changed a few things, you might not agree if your vision leads elsewhere. I just don't know what your vision is :)

In your version, there's too much contrast between the raggy parts (hair, scraps of cloth at skirt) and supertight parts (like shoulders), so it's good to pick one of the two for the main costume and use the other merely as an accent (e.g. in the form of a sleek badge on a scraggly costume or in the form of a bandage on a tight costume)
>>
>>3035502
>>3035503
Maybe just decide on sleek versus scraggly. Does she look supertight, afraid of loosing control, or is she trying to hold everything together but falling apart? This >>3035503
is more the first option, holding a tight grip on everything.

I don't know the character.
>>
>>3035503

Man, I re-he-heally love what you did with it. Almost all of it. The asymmetric shoulder thing is also an awesome idea. One thing I really don't agree with are the red parts. I'm gonna substitute them with gold or a subtle blue tone and be done with it. I'm gonna have to rethink some of the materials now. Might also change the gold stuff into silver so she doesn't look so "classy".

Anyways, can't thank you enough. I'll start working from here.
>>
>>3035502
>what would I show the art director on day one
Oh, also, avoid "bad" words in a studio & always show minimum three designs. Different designs, not same design with slight changes.
>>
>>3035509
Have fun! :)
>>
>>3035504

I think that even though >>3035503 did a great job on the overpaint I'm going to go for a slightly more scraggy look. Basically what he did but removing the gold parts and making the costume look like it's centuries old. Like a sexy spooky witch lady.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

howd u learn to paint like that?
>>
>>3036560

I paint using a cross hatching method. I have mainly done traditional studies beforehand.

It helps to visualize the forms, and you hatch paint on top of those forms of where it is going, in or out. Then it is just a matter of rendering the hatch part to make it blend together.

Hope that helps

I think just grab some more references and look at how they hold the bow - the angle and slight curve of their arm, the finger grip,
and their spacing of legs
Also think about how the fabric creases can better indicate the leg position, strengthening overall pose.

quick redline
Try to make lines with more confidence. Draw with straight lines if that is easier for you.
Just don't scribble. Always make lines with intention.

It seems like you are trying to attempt perspective, but you don't have the anatomical knowledge for it.
I suggest that you learn the basic skeleton and proportions first, then move on to basic muscle groups. It's okay to continue trying to draw things like that as you study to gauge your skill.
Also doodle boxes when you can to help yourself draw in 3d and perspective.

Continuing with my Shriek fan art thingy. Just made a 1h. composition sketch for the final using some design doll and basic shapes. Not focusing on rendering at all at this point. Just trying to nail down the composition and value structure. Would like some feedback on this. It's probably gonna be buildings in the bottom of the background and an eclipsed sun behind her head.

I will NOT be taking this sketch to finish so I'm really not looking for advice on the rendering or anatomy on this. I'll be building the final with a posed Daz 3D model that I'm gonna sculpt to look more like my character sketch in ZBrush and I'm gonna be bringing that back to PS for a 100% paint over (Marek Okon style)

Tl;dr: What do you guys think of this composition and value structure for an illustration?

hey Nile, I really think you should take time to learn anatomy, landscapes, composition and drawing individually instead of spending huge amounts of time on big pieces that full of flaws from the get-go
>>
>>3036484

I don't think it's a good idea to split your image in half like you did. Try to have more diagonal shapes or just focus on the right side and cut off the rest. The character looks promising at least. Look at Peter Mohrbachers stuff maybe?

Exaggerate your color palette more: with a greater range of lights and darks in the right places your work will get better. Your draftsmanship is okay but needs some improvement but I'd say this is halfway there. Composition is nice, if a bit cliche.
Try working with more saturated (not full technicolor though, you don't want a piece that looks like a rainbow shat on it) colors as a whole. Overall, fine, but needs work

The tip of the nose is too slim which also makes the distance from the upper lip to the bottom of the nose too long. Just move the whole bottom of the nose down a bit.

You could do the core shadow on her chin a little subtler. No need for those directional strokes there.

Highlights on the shoulders and neck. Don't be afraid to go to 100% white in some parts.

I like how in the original image we kind of lose the silhouette on the top of the hat. You don't have any of the lighter values she has on the hat. You could also try to experiment with some different brushes for the material on the hat.

Looks good anyway! GG...
>>
>>3037728

Oh and the bottom of the upper lip would probably be darker than the lower lip even though I really can't tell because the original image is kind of small. Also, look at the directions on the stripes in her hair. It's a U-shape. Yours is just going diagonally to the bottom right. The eye lash is also a pretty U-shape.

If you want to get better I don't recommend you using the pencil tool like that. You can get used to the software and the digital stuff by using the painting brushes. You can sketch the proportions and suggest the values with the 2b pencil . Then add the base values and blend. Unless this was made just for fun . Then i suppose they look acceptable. The mouths and lips look wrong. Measure them more carefully. Also the eyes. They have no depth.
>>
>>3037891
I'm pretty new to digital art, so I guess you could say this is a muck-around work. Thanks for the tips. I'll give this a go with other tools and see how it goes!
>>
>>3037894
In order to better use the digital tools i recommend you painting a spheres , cubes etc. It looks like you have the grasp the basics but digital art is a new medium so i recommend you doing that at first.

No problemo, dude. You fixed a lot of the stuff I was talking about but I still you could still work on it. I did a quick 15 min. version. Not sure if you're going for a 100% likeness tho so take that into account.

Made some quick texture on the hat (not really necessary but why not). Brought some highlights to her face and added some subtle values to her cheek and eyelid. Blended a lot of stuff with a textured smudge brush (You could try that. It keeps the painterly feel while blending). Some other minor tweaks. Hope you don't mind. U good anyway...

I kept looking at mine and couldn't figure it why it didn't have any volume at all . And you literally came and saved me with the high light. I will use the smudge textured brush a little more often. Thank you so much !!! Sometimes i forget there are nice people here that are willing to help.

Value should almost always be your main priority. I actually think you should have worked this further with value only. Bounced light shouldn't be as bright as the top side. Also I think you might want to have that other hind leg showing because your version doesn't really read properly.

Oh and make a perspective grid. I really think you need it because the face, legs, eyes, horns and tail are all from different angles.
>>
>>3037966
Brilliant critique, faggot.
>>
>>3037990
Thanks, I realized I messed up the values when I turned it to grayscale after that other anon's post. Also I don't feel i'll learn much by using the in-program perspective grid, but i'll work on un-fucking the perspective myself.
Those claws were meant to be kinda wonky-looking though, I love how komodo dragon or eagle claws sometimes slant on their sides, but I still appreciate the fixes.
>>
>>3037998

I didn't mean the in program perspective grid. Just make some vague lines going to a vanishing point/points. Just a 1 minute thing. I don't think you'll be able to un-fuck the perspective just by eye. Hope you'll prove me wrong though.

Keeppidup!

>>3037983

yea..believe me it's not workin out.

get your FUCKING SHIT TOGETHER.
>>
>>3037119
I think it should be other other way around,
use hard brush more extensively to set down values, use soft brush to blend where necessary.

>>
>>3037983

Not him, but one particular thing I notice that's wonky anatomically is the face. If you look at the angle of the eyes vs the nostrils, for example. It looks like his nose is twisted. The left nostril is below the right while the left eye is above the right.

Kinda looks like he is wearing a reversed baseball hat with how circular the top of his head is. The front right paw has a toe that looks disconnected to the foot. I like the flipper appearance of the ears (kinda like a seahorse)

Agree with >>3037925 it's a bit boring at atm. Idk about a human figure, but it'd be cool to have skeletal bug creatures or sth

My most recent... thing, i dunno. I wanna get better with backgrounds and buildings and stuff but im still working on it. i tried rlly hard not to back that background fountain look like a dick.

>>3038344
color theory is my protip. Try to balance out colors. If you think that your picture looks kinda bland, try to use an unexpected color and that will usually make your picture pop like you wouldn't expect! For instance, the opposite of blue is yellow. In that picture you posted, you notice the big blue sky against the yellow dessert. That's all intentional. Brown is a neutral color, so that's why that spaceship works and adds to the picture.
>>
^ just going on the assumption that you didn't draw the spaceship picture

Yeah I wanted there to be backlighting but I'm not entirely sure on how to shade shoulderblades, or I guess how to draw them haha

Also what do you mean by the right and left leg are on the same plane? Like they don't look like one is in front of the other?
>>
>>3038191
nayrt, but it looks like you just drew the mech, then added the background and figure as an afterthought.
The mech itself looks pretty cool on its own, but the perspective with the rest of the scene seems off. It looks like you're showing off what the mech looks like, rather than incorporating the mech in the scene to tell a story.
>>
>>3038187
great job anon, it looks a tonne better now, I think you can even keep it figure-less because of how much more character the building has.

adding onto what the other anons said, it'd be interesting to play with angles that emphasise the size contrast between the mech and the man.

idk anon. i think you positioned the guy wrong. hes facing his back to me and it's just off. the perspective on the bird is weird. his hand is on the ground in the mid ground but his head looks like its in the bg which makes it then look flat to me. this painting is not really captivating. looks like you spilled your fruity looks on your tablet or something.

Weird. I actually sketched the composition as a whole out from the beginning. I did have to fix the perspective a couple times flipping horizontal back and forth but now I can't see anything wrong with it. But I'll look again, maybe it'll look different after having slept and left it alone.

If you're spending so much time on it why are you leaving it unfinished? Push the details if you're serious , don't leave things messy looking

yeah, i think i agree, but i cant figure out what exactly is going wrong with it. i think ive looked at it too long, if someone can elaborate and suggest changes i can make without completely redrawing the soldier id appreciate it
