IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Unless of course something is genetically wrong with you. This doesn't mean that you can just draw an anatomically incorrect human being, of course. Look up what sort of changes happen to said human being, the symptoms, etc... Understand why they happen and create your art from that knowledge and what you see in front of you.

At the very least, you might learn something new.

how do you find the will to go on? it's like a cycle of seeing progress, then spiraling back into depression where you and your art will always be shit. this stuff takes weeks or months to fully understand, but i hate myself immediately. the mental struggle feels harder than the actual drawing at this point.

In my case i have experienced this kind of process before, with fking LoL, went from bronze tier to Challenger tier, took me 4-5 years. Inb4 lol wasted 5 years in a shitgame, it was fun tho.
If you draw daily and practice both, fundies and fun stuff it isn't so annoying, i am still shit tier right now but compared to when i was starting i am pretty satisfied with how thing are going considering the little ammount of time i have spent
Here, have a laugh at what i used to draw in the beggining, hope it makes you feel better

This may sound like putting the cart before the horse, but how do I improve my character designs?
I mean, I can visualize a character in my mind and assign them traits and even think of a general design, but when I try to draw it it either looks like shit (from a design standpoint) or looks very generic, is this related in any way or form to being a beginner or am I just an uncreative shit in general?

learn to look at original sources for inspiration, like i dunno, maybe look up aztec warriors, then look up 1950s bikers, and merge elements from the two.

The key is to avoid the delusion that everything original is new, you need to look at real life for inspiration, and for char design i find that history is the best.

Since you read comics and play videogames you already have a source for inspiration, if you draw better than that pic (Which is not a hard task by any means) then you are not as bad as i used to be, now you just need to grind and read about it (Insert Loomis meme here)

Broaden you scope of consumed media, often times people mimic what they see most often, and this leads to several cancerous OCs and re-skins.

But on the contrary to just shutting it out, go watch stuff that you have never heard of, inspect why a character desighn works, and when its just forcing it, case in point of forcing it:

The shading still looks funny and not very smooth.
666petportraits improves it but I think it makes it look too anime like (the type of ) and not sophisticated enough - detail is lost.

Specifically from the original:
Lips shading is v. good.
Clothing shading is v. good
I'm not sure what is going on with the horns either anatomically or in terms of shading - get a reference or fix from the reference.
Nose shading seems too dark (but the shadow underneath it looks good) and face shading is funny - right eye is misshappen on the rightmost side and the shading of both eyes needs to be fixed
Nose shading
Hair shading on the sides is fine but the top fo the hair looks funny and the hairline needs to be fixed
Clothing shading is quite good but could use more detail.

This is a poor reference but the light goes around as it does in your original drawing but not in 666petportrait but other aspects of their version eg the eyes is better.

Here anon. With just a little bit of cleaning up, which took only a few mins, you can see much more of the face and features. You just have to paint what's there.

Start clean with simple values like >>3040953. It's much easier/faster than to start messy and then try to blend.

Advice or links to tutorials on how to shade with pencil crayon or water-color pencils would be super appreciated. I can generally paint a face in Photoshop (after taking a long ass time) but blending, shading and getting skin tones with physical mediums is killing me. I think my issue is that I don't know the process, or a structured approach to layering faces. My pencil work is fucking shit as well, which is masked through the layers I use in Photoshop. This is probably why shading and colouring traditionally is wrecking me.

Anatomy of her top half is bad, her arms are way too tiny and her grip is pretty bad. Pick up a broom/rod and hold it like that and look in the mirror, take note of here your elbows hit your torso and where your hands are in relation to your face. Also look at how you're gripping the rod and study the shape of the fingers and hand. Her lady bits look a bit too low as well,

Your contour looks good, just pay more attention to the alignment of the facial features and you'll be gucci. To me it looks like you're relying on your wrist too much let your shoulder and your elbow get in on the action too. You are mere steps from the next level, its in reach you just need a little more perspective. Oh and the chin is off.

keep going you'll get there eventually, try to draw a construction drawing underneath your contour drawing very lightly before you actually start making the contour drawing.

It's called a key light. It's focused on her torso, and is a tight beam, not a flood, for a specific effect. It's mainly for photographic effect, and should be used for art reference. (the references posted here are iffy, at best, anyway)

There's 3 kinds of lights to worry about:
Key light - main source of light
Fill - ambient light
Back - background lighting, to create halos and contrast lighting.

The key light isn't always mimicking the sun, or a big, bright light that illuminates the whole figure.

In al my years of art school, and knowing artists, I've never seen people talk like this. It sounds to me like you have clinical depression, from other sources than art, and you need to deal with them, before tackling art.

it's terrible because your reference is terrible. Overcast day, no shadows, hardly any contrast or depth in value. It won't look like much of anything if you manage to draw it.

Choose a landscape with clear and simple forms, bright with plenty of shadows and value variation.

Learn to paint skin, and then, specifically, black skin. This is cartooning. Black skin has a lot more color in it than caucasian or asian, it's pretty beautiful, when you can see it. They have deep reds, blues, and every other color.

You're also mixing line art and realistic, which is probably a mistake at your skill level. Pick one, and finish the piece, then do another of the other style.

You've also given her white features.

Your lack of understanding how the face is constructed is pretty blatant, you need to go learn how to draw the various parts of the face, and then combine them. Then learn lighting, then form, color, and texture.

This is above your skill level, honestly.

Determining the center of mass, and where the weight of the body is focused on. Muscles will change shape when under weight, or not. One thing to always be looking for is to ground your character, by determining where the center of mass is, and where the weight of the body is centered - like on one leg, or the butt while sitting. It's part of the gesture itself.
Plumb line is one of the more less-studied things, so don't feel bad for not knowing.

Possibly, but you construct a scene like this, like you would anything else - a piece at a time. You wouldn't have to pose all those people at one time, you pose them one or two at a time - where they interact/touch each other is where you'd need more than one.

Also, learn our app. Photoshop, for instance, has line tools, and, if you use the brush tool, just click on the origin, hold down the shift key, and click on the next point, and it will draw a line between them (if you're using a tablet, turn off pressure and all effects - I have a line tool brush so I can switch to it quickly.)

It's not racist to say someone is black, if they're actually black. I will be charging $15 an hour to start, but will bump it up to $20 or more when I get really good.

If you can draw perfect lines and cicles without the tools then good for you. It's convenient and much faster than having to use tools. But it's not cheating.

Cheating is smudging a photo and call it painting or painting over photo and claim that you draw and paint from scratch. Like most "artist" on reddit do.

I charge $250 an hour, when I charge hourly, which is rare. That's full color. Black and white and page layout I start at $150 a page. I generally charge a set/project price, and how much time it will take dictates the price more than anything. Market, size of company, budget, and history with a client also come into play.
I'm working in a market that's professional, though. Your mileage will vary.

The burn/dodged areas are way too dark, yeah.
>>
>>3042121
I think nice lines and an understanding of lineweight come with practice, it's good to be confident in your lines like instead of being super sketchy about a line just make the motion. Word of advice: try to use your arm for larger strokes, instead of just pivoting your wrist move your entire arm. You'll get smoother lines, even if you feel a little goofy doing it.
>>3042130
that's actually really good, nice job. agreeing with other anons about going darker in the shadows but it looks pretty great.
>>
>>3042218
Smoother lines yes, but lines that don't go where I want them to.

Because I'm inexperienced and still developing.

Not to sound like a broken record, but it just takes some time to get used to it. I do a warmup where I draw a bunch of lines as straight and uniformly in a row as I can in every direction, then crosshatch those, then coils and circles to loosen my arm and hand up.
>>
How exactly do I construct feet?
>>
>>3040694
Anatomy is the lesser of the issues here, gesture is the major one. There's nothing here that moves the eye through the figure-- far too static.
>>
>>3042242
Could you show me? How do you crosshatch straight lines? Isn't crosshatching just shading?

The gloves are too tiny. It looks like his hands can barely fit in. They should be big enough to completely cover his head. His abs look like they're giant pimples or something. Instead of having individual muscles pop out, try drawing his abs connected to each other. His forearms could have more details. Other than that it's pretty good.

His hands should be big enough to cover his chin to his eyes. His feet should be as big as his head. His head is too big.

Late reply, but I don't believe you (or anyone else) can really do that. You have 2-3 hours at most of creative power, then the rest of the day will be spent either refining something, or sketching to ease your mind.

Granted, I'm just regurgitating the words of this guy:

But he's a professional, so his words have a lot of weight.

>>
>>3042507
You know I can see that you put extra details on shits like the star in his eyeball and these extra tattoos or whatevers. That's a lot of mistakes beginners make. Those extra details won't make your drawing look good, just more crowded.

What you want to focus on is the the line works. I'm sure you've already heard this but you need to work on your anatomy and perspectives. Any coloring and quirky flairs can come later.
>>
I have trouble with structure. I get lost because I don't know what to do or practice.

Does anyone have an example of a study schedule or guide?
>>
i looked through my stuff from a year ago and apart from being slack i doubt i could reproduce it. i think ive gone down in quality
>>
Is it better to sharpen the blades or just order new ones?
>>
>>3042576
its easy enough to sharpen them, even if you just need to realign the blade. only worth if you already have a whetstone though
>>
>>3041164
How dare you say that on BEATORICHE!?
>>
>>3042576
Sharpen your pencil with a knife instead, works just as well and gives you more control on what you want your pencil to look like.
>>
>>3042542
What do you want to draw, anon?

>>3042500
I think it's good if you remember what exactly you did wrong and make sure it doesn't happen again in your next drawing. Besides that, your drawing on the reference doesn't have to be a 1:1 copy. Feel free to move have the body be a little different in your drawing. It's fun to exaggerate a pose. As long as you're aware of the changes you made to the figure.
>>
>>3042434
Maybe you can try constructing a few figures using exclusively straight lines. It will force you more into giving something proper form and perspective, instead of the eyeballing you're doing now with the more complex curved lines.
>>
>>3042258
Read the sticky, get the books
It's explained in the books

In the end it's like constructing anything, really. If you can construct something properly, you can construct anything as anything is a complex shape and can be abstracted to a less or more complex shape.

Not completely sure on the focus, but I'd like to draw environments and some fantasy stuff like pic related. Slightly stylized, bright colors and stuff.

what is the water doing

light source seems inconsistent, almost like pillow shading in some places but some places the light is hitting from the sides
>>
>>3041023
vary your line weight
>>
>>3042461
water isn't blue, it's the colour of whatever's around it. so you'd have black-ish lines to show depth and a paler tone of the hand refracting through yo show the shape of the water. also your highlights are inconsistent. on the left side the light's coming from the left and on the right side the light's coming from the right
>>
>>3042636
just an fyi these arent particularly well drawn, but expect rigorous study to still reach this level in an acceptable time frame. since youre noob by the sounds of it practice lighting and perspective. op has links
>>
>>3042652
not quite true. water is blue the more there is. in such a small quantity its nearly clear, though larger volumes will be blue when theres nothing else but a white light source.

I dont get why people dont reply to my posts. This is the third piece I get almost no direct reply on and it makes me really sad and fustrated. I try making experiments on how I introduce it, ie unsure, desperate, meh, or slightly proud but it doesnt matter.

If it was horrendeusly bad I would guaranteed get replies so its not that. And its not good since then I'd get positive replies. Is it all just so painfully boring and unnoticable that no one gives a shit?

Needs more shading and definition anon. Some of the anat is off especially the thickness of the arm near the elbow and the wrist. The current image is okay but if you will have to Loomis and practice shading real people a lot more in the future if you want to progress more.

draw a vertical line down from the centre of mass to the ground. if the contact point is between the feet the pose is balanced
>>
>>3042776
Her left leg in your sketch is a bit off, so the point probably won't be between her feet, it will be behind them, further away from the viewer. Even if it will, the pose will look weird, as if she's making a pretty awkward squat. In the reference her left leg is vertical.

Here's a warmup sheet I did, cross hatching is a shading technique, but it's also a good way to practice doing confident line strokes. Do some small ones with just your wrist and practice your speed, then do longer ones using your arm and focus on making a line you're happy with. And I do strokes going up down, down up, left right, and right left. My left right stroke is the weakest so don't feel bad if you find out there's a direction you're not as good at. That's why you move the paper around while you're drawing. Think of a warmup session as structured doodling. You know the things you're going to do but do other shit you feel like. Wanna draw a quick gesture? Go for it. A warmup helps loosen your joints up and kickstarts your muscle memory.

I can't cure my object drawing and I am depressed with esteem issues and many other things, I am looking for drawing as a means to escape.

I know I am on the right path with my understanding of gestures, for example both marked K are Keanue reeves, except notebook one is only looking at what lines and individual shapes makes me feel and translating that while the other one is looking at relations, and lines and all.

Do you guys think I have skill? should I wait until I get shrink to help me fix my mental state? Perhaps I shouldn't beat myself up until then.
