Imagine that Doctor Devil is planning to go to the nation's nuclear power plant. If he can get his hands on the radiation crystal there he can complete his Terror Bomb and successful destroy all life in the universe.
Fortuntly Doctor Devil does not know where the Nuclear power plant is. He runs out of his secret lab carrying the still uncomplete Terror Bomb.

We don't have all that much else going for us, I guess. There also seems to be some kind of general feeling of "Weltschmerz" among most of us. Most Germans I know, even the happier ones, either struggle with or have come to terms with certain nihilistic principles. I could see this being fertile ground for philosophy, art and the sciences.
But that's really just speculation obviously.

They live on the same island but Haiti can not seem to get its shit together. So what I am wondering is was there something about Spanish colonial rule that somehow set Dominicans up with good institutions vs what the French did? Is the answer that slavery is to blame? Slaves were about 15-20% of DRs population, Haitians were 90% enslaved. Did this breed a culture of oppression and exploitation that bled its way into government?

So, as I understand it, Japan's plan, such as it was, against the U.S. in WW2 was basically to beat them up for about 6 months that they predicted they'd have the advantage, expand as much as they could, and try to bargain to a peace with honor based on the assumption that America would be unwilling to take the kind of losses that would be needed to dig them out of their chain of island fortresses and drive to Japan.
If their whole strategy hinges around negotiating to victory, why didn't they ever at least threaten to hold lend-lease hostage? It was well known that Europe was FDR's priority, and as the pic shows, the biggest port of call for Lend-Lease was Vladivostok, right where the Japanese could have easily cut if off, had they wished to do so.
It might have worked, probably wouldn't have, but the thrust of what I'm getting at is that as far as I'm aware, the Japanese never tried it, and never even seemed to consider it. Does anyone know why? I mean, if it occurs to a tipsy shitposter here, surely someone in the Jpaanese military establishment at least had the thought cross their mind.

You wouldn't need u-boats, or Japanese shit subs. You're sending convoys out into the Sea of Japan, within land based air range of a zillion Japanese bases.
You could have a dozen cruisers hanging off around Vladivostok, which would be way more effective than submersibles, and not affect the carrier based main fleet actions much. And if the Americans start escorting these convoys, you have almost unlimited land-based airpower that can join in.
The material resources were sure as shit there to cut the Pacific lend lease route.

Serbia tolerated their actions just like Pakistan tolerates Taliban activity. No European great power would have tolerated terrorist activities in their periphery and having been humiliated like this they had to do something. Whether they could have handled things more diplomatically is a different issue, but their claims were essentially in the right.

Also yes, you are correct, the sentence structure seems almost intentionally dense and confusing.

This certainly looks like a bad translation. the middle part of the text isn't too difficult to get to but parts like this are weird, and I could write another 3 paragraphs on how the author could have gotten his point across easier just by changing sentence structure and nothing else.
post the book, edition, translation and maybe someone who knows more than me will be able to tell you if it's supposed to be like that or not
