Here Herodotus tells us the national foundation myth of the Scythians and how they were divided between different groups. According to him this is the scythian version (as opposed to the greek one he tells after). How accurate was his information?

>5. According to the account which the Scythians themselves give, they are the youngest of all nations. Their tradition is as follows. A certain Targitaus was the first man who ever lived in their country, which before his time was a desert without inhabitants. He was a child- I do not believe the tale, but it is told nevertheless- of Jove and a daughter of the Borysthenes. Targitaus, thus descended, begat three sons, Leipoxais, Arpoxais, and Colaxais, who was the youngest born of the three. While they still ruled the land, there fell from the sky four implements, all of gold- a plough, a yoke, a battle-axe, and a drinking-cup. The eldest of the brothers perceived them first, and approached to pick them up; when lo! as he came near, the gold took fire, and blazed. He therefore went his way, and the second coming forward made the attempt, but the same thing happened again. The gold rejected both the eldest and the second brother. Last of all the youngest brother approached, and immediately the flames were extinguished; so he picked up the gold, and carried it to his home. Then the two elder agreed together, and made the whole kingdom over to the youngest born.

>6. From Leipoxais sprang the Scythians of the race called Auchatae; from Arpoxais, the middle brother, those known as the Catiari and Traspians; from Colaxais, the youngest, the Royal Scythians, or Paralatae. All together they are named Scoloti, after one of their kings: the Greeks, however, call them Scythians.

>7. Such is the account which the Scythians give of their origin. They add that from the time of Targitaus, their first king, to the invasion of their country by Darius, is a period of one thousand years, neither less nor more. The Royal Scythians guard the sacred gold with most especial care, and year by year offer great sacrifices in its honour. At this feast, if the man who has the custody of the gold should fall asleep in the open air, he is sure (the Scythians say) not to outlive the year. His pay therefore is as much land as he can ride round on horseback in a day. As the extent of Scythia is very great, Colaxais gave each of his three sons a separate kingdom, one of which was of ampler size than the other two: in this the gold was preserved. Above, to the northward of the farthest dwellers in Scythia, the country is said to be concealed from sight and made impassable by reason of the feathers which are shed abroad abundantly. The earth and air are alike full of them, and this it is which prevents the eye from obtaining any view of the region.

It's Herodotus, called father of lies by many, but in this case he claims to have been informed by the scythians themselves (which is not unlikely since we know that greeks and scythians had contact). Also the story he's telling is very similar to the Persian myth of the division of the world between three brothers, and the scythians were also iranic.
>>
>>1168290
>called father of lies by many
Such an unfair title. He repeatedly states that his information is not personally verified, that he heard it from a guy and it might not be true.

Help me understand something /his/, there are those who oppose torture, but also support bombing. I argue that if you support bombing people, you have to support torture. In torture you're not
Killing the person, you have reasonable evidence that they have done something wrong or are about too, and you at least gave them a choice in the matter ( compared to bombing, in which it's possible to bomb someone without them being involved.)

>you have reasonable evidence that they have done something wrong or are about too
Torture as defined by the Oxford dictionary

>The action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or to force them to do or say something, or for the pleasure of the person inflicting the pain.
>>
>>1168065
Are you saying they're not related, because they clearly are. You bomb things as a preventive measure, just as you torture for the same reasons.
>>
>>1168076
I'm saying this is invalid and not a requirement for either. Your argument is utterly invalid.

Ptolemy & Strabo.

All medievalshits operated on Roman Maps for the longest time.
>>
>>1167332
Terra Australis got propagated by Ptolemy's maps, which emphasized an Indian Ocean enclosed by land. The idea was that the Southern Hemisphere must have a large region of land to "balance out" the land in the Northern Hemisphere.

And since the Byzantines were not explorers in their own right, most Medieval maps were still reliant on Ptolemy's cartography.

Why should we ?

Before you all send me to /lit/ hear me out, a teacher of mine I remember saying, (she taught/teaches Social Science) that this book (PIC related) called in italian "the need to believe" was a good read on the matter of religion, I got it and was about to, but I am worried, because as I looked into the wikipage of this Erich fella I see that he is Fromm and a prominent member of the Frankfurt school, which made me wary.

Is there anything to worry about the philosophers of that school /his/?

Tldr: What's the deal with Frankfurt school and if people connected to them are worth reading?

>What's the deal with the Frankfurt School
A collection of contemporary, far-left philosophers that gained notoriety because particularly paranoid right-wingers connect them to a conspiracy.

>Are worth reading?
No, they really have nothing substantial to say beyond what's already been said in far-left circles.

The Frankfurt school is a bunch of left wing thinkers that right wingers uses as a meme to explain why their beloved culture is turning against them instead of capitalism
>>
>>1167637
I think the Alt-right obcession with the Frankfurt conspiracy and "Cultural marxism" is pure nonsense but let's be real, the only "genuine culture" they wanted to foster was a universal one based on "progressive" ideals

Why dont continental philosophers just kill themselves /his/? everyone hates them. they are useless. they do nothing but bitch. they will never be employed. they have done nothing to improve peoples lives.

meanwhile, the followers of the enlightenment continue to make progress every day. they make peoples lives cleaner, safer, happier, and easier.

Is there any argument that proves that an objective moral can exist, other than functionalism?

And in that case, what is the "right" moral code to follow? How can we know?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1165624
only way I can see morality being "objective" is if karma was an actual thing like gravity
>>
No, all value-systems are axiomatic in nature and dependent upon the desires of a particular agent.
>>
So assume we prove that a set of morals is "objective"... then what? What would actually be different if the same set of morals were relative/subjective?

> Would significantly less civilians had died if we invaded?

no, it would have been many more, probably by a few magnitudes
>>
Operation Downfall was projected to produce 2 million US casualties. All Purple Hearts issued by the US military since WW2 were part of an initial production run for the invasion. The US has made it through Korea, Vietnam, and the Global War on Terror without running out.

This was probably too low, as the Japanese High Command had correctly predicted American landing points and order of battle.

An American land invasion would have looked like something out of the absolute worst days of the Eastern Front, or the Paraguayan War.

Picture the Battle of Berlin times like ten.

Not to mention Japan wasn't self sufficient in food. One of the first things the US did after the surrender was rush in as much food as possible to avert the impending famine. Even without a blockade, you would see mass starvation.

I think it's almost impossible to think of a historical scenario that involves less than 200,000 Japanese dead during that time period. That's just the way it was back then.
