Are there any potential issues or downsides I might run into if using the iGPU to power my second monitor? As far I understand, it shouldn't affect performance, but could it cause stability issues, or problems with poorly coded games?

I'm just tired of having my r9 390 idle at 70+ W for no good reason at all.

It is a bit hard to explain. I see that whenever you try to do something 'extra' in the house (connect a new device, turn on the TV to stream, open a torrenting app) then it 'drops' for some minutes. After sometime seems to come back.
In the meantime not even Google.com can be reached.
Torrents seem to be fuckslow in general.
Direct downloads are good as long as you don't at that time when you add a new thing to the network.

Yeah, don't just check the model number. Check the compatibility list to see if any versions aren't supported, and only buy one you know is. Also you need one that supports barrier breaker or newer. I'd go with LEDE instead of OpenWRT if you're installing your own.

It's more that if you don't know what you're doing, it's easy to brick a router. More often it just doesn't work though, and it's back to the drawing board. It's also surprisingly easy to accidentally buy a router that isn't compatible, or one that's too old to support the feature you need, or one that requires to compile some weird ass custom version of the kernel.

no, but raid and baking a cake are different. in a raid-0 of 2 256gb drives you still only have 256gb, so in that case one would think that the total writes to each drive would be reduced by 50%, half on each drive
is that correct thinking?

>in a raid-0 of 2 256gb drives you still only have 256gb
no, a raid0 of 2*256GB is 512GB, it's just striping
for example, lets say you have disk "A" and disk "B" and they have four sectors, it's like this;
disk A;
AAAA
disk B;
BBBB
raid0 of A and B;
ABABABAB

>total writes to each drive would be reduced by 50%, half on each drive
yes, for example, a 10GB file on that raid0 would have 5GB of the file on each disk, the wear is spread across both disks

>>
What's the best free web crawler?
>>
>>62284321
np, you can also see in that basic example why raid0 can be dangerous
since everything you put on it is split into small stripes, losing a disk in the raid means every file larger than a single stripe will be full of holes
like say you have;
ABABABAB
and a file takes up say, 5 stripes, so;
ABABABAB
^^^^^ file is on these

and "B" dies, you're left with;
A-A-A-A-
^?^?^

where "?" is missing data
>>
why do people use ./something.sh instead of bash something.sh?
>>
>>62284407
i know how striping works, just for whatever reason i thought raid-0 only allowed for twice the speed at half the capacity
i was looking into this trying to figure out what would be best for a scratch disk, so really if i lost any data due to disk failure i wouldnt lost anything, since all that data is also stored in other places. Looks like raid-0 is the best option desu, better performance and increased drive size. Would that be fine to do through a software implementation? like with 2 m.2 drives?
>>
>>62284444
>i thought raid-0 only allowed for twice the speed at half the capacity
you might be mixing up raid1 (mirror), where the same data is maintained across multiple disks
this allows for faster read speed, as the system can read multiple (parts of) files at the same time from multiple disks, but since the disks store the exact same data, you only have the capacity of one of the disks
write speed is also no better than the slowest disk, since that's the bottleneck (if you wrote faster to one disk, then by definition they can't contain the same data)

raid0 is good for a scratch disk, it's really all it's good for, at least by itself. it's also mixed with other raid levels, such as "raid10" or "raid50" to try to strike a balance of tradeoffs between them

>Would that be fine to do through a software implementation? like with 2 m.2 drives?
yes, i would recommend software raid where you can, it's much more flexible, and you aren't tied to specifc raid cards
whatever you do, for the love of god, do not use fakeraid (that is, on-motherboard raid), this has the disadvantages of both raid cards and software raid
>>
>>62284534
>fakeraid
I know to avoid on motherboard shit, ive just typically been leery of software raid. most of what I've done raid wise has been better suited/required hardware raid, so in this case i just wanted to be sure.
since the endurance ratings will be higher I should be fine going with something like 960 evos for the drives right? i was leaning towards something like a rd400 even though the performance is a bit lower due to the 50% higher write endurance, but now im not sure given the higher price/lower performance
>>
>>62284431

I want to wget a html file, run magic javascript on it to extract links, wget those html files, run magic js to extract other data and store it.
>>
>>62284661
np, since it's just for scratch, it should not be hard to change it later if need be, just read into things as you go, benchmark, find alternatives, benchmark those, etc. it sound like i don't need to tell you that different workloads benefit from different setups (like raid type, stripe size, etc), so what you end up with will need to be tested with your own load in the end, if you want to most out of it

However, I set up /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf to authentify with 802.1X using my wired interface.

I know that my conf file has enough information to pass authentification because I can run it by hand and authentify.

However, this apparently isn't what wpa_supplicant does on boot (or maybe dhcpcd doesn't wait for him to finish) because I am improperly authentified on boot. I'm not sure why. Any comments?

while (PressedKey.key != ConsoleKey.D1 && PressedKey.key != ConsoleKey.D2)
{
Console.Clear();
Console.WriteLine(line[0]);
PressedKey = Console.ReadKey();
}

In your code you are making an unnecessary call to a function, and for each part of the if statement it needs to read another key from the console. Also by using || you are saying that the key has to simultaneously be ConsoleKey.D1 and ConsoleKey.D2 for the loop to end, which is impossible.

There are two common setups.

In bridge mode, your VM has a network card with a freshly generated mac address, and on the host machine that mac is added to your physical network card. In linux, this means that a bridge is created with eth0 on it, and a bunch of virtual network cards also on the bridge that the VM software links to the in-VM network card. In this setup, your VM behaves just like a physical machine on your network, and other machines on your network would not see the difference. You can do network manipulation as normal.

In routed mode or NAT mode, your VM software behaves like a NAT router, providing your VMs with limited NATted access to your internal network. Your VMs may be able to talk to each other, but other machines on your network cannot connect to your VMs unless you set up port forwards. In this system, you can still do things like port scanning (just like you can port scan the internet behind your router), but you can't set up servers in your VMs that you can actually access (unless you go out of your way).

Both systems are common. libvirt can set up either. I generally use some form of NAT connections for isolating seriously untrusted software, and bridges for everything else. (Read: I have used NAT on occasion for special projects, but generally use a bridge.)

>>
>>62288490
>wait what's wrong with mobo raid?
The basic problem is that if your motherboard goes, so does your RAID array. Recovering it is usually possible, but a pain in the ass. Just letting your operating system do it for you is better in roughly 100% of cases.

Additionally, you cannot easily configure and otherwise manipulate the RAID setup using your operating system tools. You will probably have to resort to using a horrible BIOS tool, whose exact functionality and reliability varies from motherboard to motherboard, and which requires restart and a physical keyboard and screen to mess with.

In 95% of cases, hardware RAID adds roughly nothing over software RAID while being much less reliable and more fiddly. This rises to 100% for fake hardware RAID (hardware RAID that just uses your CPU to do all the RAID computations, rather than a specialized chip).
>>
>>62288400
The head is marking a really loud noise, like loud click, this even stops the computer from booting into BIOS.

>>62288373

>>
>>62288620
>this even stops the computer from booting into BIOS.
Than this can't be a HDD issue. Check your PSU or something.
>>
>>62288620
Not really. If it's a mechanical fault then you might as well get a new one. I've been told just exposing the disk can corrupt it.
>>
>>62288490
Not him but if your motherboard dies it will be harder to restore than a software raid.

But for RAID 1 it shouldn't matter.
Most likely it will generate two disks that work perfectly fine on their own (do check this first though!) and in any case it should not be too hard to get the data off (also make sure to get that procedure down before putting valuable data on it).

And if you use RAID 0 losing the data should not even be big deal to you.

Other than that it will run on the CPU just like software RAID.
So don't expect any performance gains.
In fact in my experience with the build-in sofware RAID in Windows 7 it's much faster than most mobo RAID implementations, as it balances the drives very well.
>>
>>62288586
This is the board I'm using for my server and what I was hoping to use for a RAID array. (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H97%20Pro4/) I'm pretty sure it has a dedicated RAID chip, but I'm not sure.

Here's the documentation for setting up a RAID with it: http://asrock.pc.cdn.bitgravity.com/Manual/RAID/H97%20Pro4/English.pdf

>>
>>62288671
I can't be bothered to research it in detail, but that's almost certainly fake raid.

Note that as said, I am of the opinion that software raid is STILL the better option in 95% of cases EVEN IF you are using a true raid card.
>>
>>62288671
>I'm pretty sure it has a dedicated RAID chip

That would be so unusual they would point it out.

Every single mobo RAID I've ever seen had it as part of the BIOS (firmware) and runs it on the CPU (no big deal though, even on full load it only takes up a couple % max)

Yeah it's going to be more than sufficient provided you don't do any heavy video editing and shit like that, then getting a 1700 would make sense but it would still be more than enough either way most likely

Copying everything over from the USB drive to the new storage device with cp -a should do the trick and then you just have to configure GRUB to boot from the new storage device

How does mega.nz work?
I noticed it doesn't download like a normal file, like in your downloads folder or browser.
Why does it do that is it faster?

I'm on debian using nightly, and for some reason twitch stopped playing videos. It'll load, play like half a second, then stop. The player button doesn't show it being paused, and I can still stream myself and view the stream preview in the dashboard, but I simply can't watch streams.
Recently I was looking over the wiki and the firefox recommended config settings, so I tried making sure autoplay was true, but that didn't help. Maybe one of the other settings there caused this?
Google says things about clearing cookies but that didn't seem to change anything. I also tried changing the quality to the lowest, and unchecking the html player, but that didn't help.
I can still watch youtube video, and twitch used to work so it's not my connection or computer specs. The chat works too, it's just the video player.

do not link an ms account on a machine you'll be doing anything illegal or dodgey, on.
ms account gives them a real person id for you, and telemetry monitors installed programs and use frequency and shit. so while I won't go so far as to say they directly spy on what you do, they certainly gather enough incidental information about you to tip off authorities/copyright holders, etc...
>>

you download the file and then un encrypt it, and that's what you see downloading

Trying to learn how to Hello World! in c++. The book says to use Visual Studio but I'm on Kubuntu so I'm trying to use the terminal like you guys.

#include "std_lib_facilities.h"

gives the error in the pic.

but if I add the following lines instead of #include "std_lib_facilities.h", it works.

#include<iostream>
#include<string>
#include<vector>
#include<algorithm>
#include<cmath>
using namespace std;
inline void keep_window_open() { char ch; cin>>ch; }

What am I doing wrong?

Youtube decerases bitrate based on resolution.

So I have this laptop from 2012 that I was basically using as a desktop since the screen got fucked when it dropped.
One day it just stop working properly, wouldn't display anything on the monitor it was hooked up to, didn't seem to even start the hdd or anything.
Like months later I found a capacitor, or what I think is a capacitor as I don't really know too much about this stuff, on the carpet. The connectors seem to fit where there's a marked space on the motherboard where it looks like maybe it was ripped from the solder.
Do you guys think if I just solder it back on that it might be usable again? Or maybe turning it on when it was missing that capacitor fucked it up for good?

I have a 2009 iMac and have never replaced the hard drive (500GB HDD).

About two years ago it started giving me errors (“invalid sibling link, corrupt drive”). The first time that happened I had to format the disk and reinstall the operating system.

It worked fine after that, but after a few weeks it gave me the same error. Oddly enough, it was still working pretty well. However this week it has started slowing down again, and sometimes will not boot correctly.

I’m guessing it’s time to replace it. Is it normal for an HDD to last eight years? I just want to be sure it isn’t something else
>>
I have an old laptop with a broken keyboard and dead hdd. I plan to use it for streaming videos in our gym. Will it be better to use a usb flash drive for linux or an sd card? Will using those all the time as a hard drive damage them?
Also I wonder if there is a linux program with which I can use my phone to type stuff into that laptop with Bluetooth or wifi.

I used slack for the first time yesterday/today. I stopped receiving messages despite not closing the tab.

For a 2009 Apple HDD, yes it is.
For a WD Blue HDD that is more or less the average lifetime.

Make a backup with clonezilla to a new HDD.

Call me stupid because I don't fucking get this. This is a shell sort in C++ based on, basically copied, from tutorialspoint pseudocode.
void shell(vector<int>& foo){
int gap = 0;
while(gap < foo.size() /3){
gap = gap * 3 + 1;
}
while(gap > 0){
for(int outter = gap; outter < foo.size(); ++outter){
int insert = foo[outter];
int inner = outter;
while(inner > gap - 1 && foo[inner - gap] >= insert){
foo[inner] = foo[inner - gap];
inner = inner - gap;
}
foo[inner] = insert;
}
gap = (gap -1) /3;
}
}

What I don't get is if I change that third while into an if statement it doesn't sort it properly. So apparently I need the while loop to do something. But once it gets to the line that says
foo[inner] = foo[inner - gap];
I don't understand how it's not fucking up all my values and changing them to something else if it actually needs to loop. There must be something I'm getting hung up on but I'm not sure what it is.

So.. Going to take my PC to a repair dude because I've fucked with it enough that I don't want to try anything stupid with it anymore. Thing is, I don't have much money. Do you think anyone would buy the following and what would be a fair price for the lot?
-2 10+ year-old bulky CD drives
-unused PCI-E card, about 5 years old, decent enough
- 1 fried Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 mobo (AM3+)
- 1 old as shit mobo+processor. Don't know specs too well other than the CPU being single-core and that it counted as a good PC in 2006.
- 1 low-efficiency 10+ year-old PSU w/ 350 watts that still works, might not be the safest part for one's computer tho
Pls respond 4 science
