I'm no audiophile, but I got the new Piston Hybrid's. I don't know if this is the right term, but they sound a bit "empty". Something seems off about them, and they're also stupidly loud compared to my other earphones.
What's going on here? I've got a broken pair of original Hybrid's, only one side works though so any comparison I make is based off one ear. I'm not sure they seem as good though really. I liked my old Piston Hybrids

What should I get in their place? KZ's I'm not high on, just looking for suggestions.

Depends on the sleeves used. Compliant sleeves, soft silicone and foam will help. I can wear them for more than 16 hours at a time.
The fit issue is overstated, and the Etys in general are much slimmer than most other earphones. Simple to insert, without requiring you to force some giant bulge deep. But not everyone actually likes putting things in their ear to start with.

>noise from a frontal loudspeaker
>frontal
The key word here is frontal. The sound of a frontal loudspeaker is not relevant here. See: http://hauptmikrofon.de/theile/1986-3_Standardization-of-studio-headphones_JAES-1986.pdf
>A study of recent work on the properties of spatial hearing shows that the free-field equalization applied to headphones cannot produce good results. A more satisfactory equalization is obtained by reference to the diffuse field...
Headphones do not present spectral properties similar to that of frontal speakers.
Free-field (frontal) equalization in headphones produces linear distortions referred to in the above study as "tone color defects." Therefore, HD600's accuracy relative to frontal speakers is completely irrelevant in terms of its perceived neutrality.
>>
>>61988709
But they ain't foldable...

>>
>>61988843

>>
>>61988772
>>61988801
Putting
>HD600
>neutral
at the top of the image leads one to believe that the point is not demonstrating that different people will perceive any headphone differently, but to attack the HD600 by implying it's not neutral because people don't perceive it the same as they do frontal speakers.

Can't you just buy parts? Like this:
http://headphonespares.sennheiser.co.uk/hifi-tv-headphones/hd-600-avantgarde
>>
>>61989104
I'm sure I could but I'll probably spend more on parts than I would buying a used on eBay. I wouldn't even know where to begin to figure out how to fix it. There's a lack of QC3 guides online
>>
>>61989068
I'm not surprised. That's why I recommended a cheap, cost-effective IEM like the ZS5

You could get an extra braided cable for it, as well as some more comfortable eartips for sleeping in
>>
>>61989301
Well, maybe BOSE wasn't a good idea after all, in hindsight.
When making the decision on spending on items for long term use like headphones, things like availability of spare parts do matter and should weight into the decision.

>>
>>61988971
I have slept countless nights with my Sony MDR-V6 on. Most of the time I wake up with them next to my pillow because of all the turning during sleep. Keep in mind that they may block the sound of your alarm in the morning (if you still have them on somehow). This is why I always set an alarm on my phone and my alarm clock.

I've had these headphones since Januari 11 2013. I have been using them every day for multiple hours since I got them and they still work fine.

I wouldn't really recommend sleeping with full size cans, but if you do intent to sleep with them on, get a pair with a flat cup backing (especially if you intent to sleep on your side).
>>
>>61989655
One that connects to your computer via USB, I guess? I'm not too familiar with them, but that way you wouldn't need to worry about having to get an amp with a phono input for it

>>61989734
What would be the strangest place the headphones ended up after you've woken up? Even with all the turning, I still don't know how mine ended up on my back folded. Curious to see what happens in my sleep because I know I turn around a lot since my sheets end up on the ground at times
>>
>>61989868
>>61989802
I'm pretty new with this trying to figure out all the connections I need and I have to say it is a labyrinth.
Lets say I get the magni+modi u2 combo then I'll have the magni plugged into the modi plugged into my computer. Then I guess I'll have to unplug the modi and connect my recordplayer to the magni in order to use it.
The dream would be to have a amp and dac with the ability to have both the recordplayer and my computer plugged in at the same time but I guess that isn't a thing.

>What would be the strangest place the headphones ended up after you've woken up?
I honestly don't know. I don't think my headphones have ever ended up in a weird place.

I have had other smaller items (like my mini gamepad) that ended up between the sheets at the foot end of my bed. I honestly thought I lost it, but I eventually found it when I was changing out my bed sheets.

There is literally no objective measurable difference between a 50 dollar USB dac and a 400 dollar imported from china placebo. An "end-game" dac/amp combo unit should not cost more than 100$ USD, full stop, and if you paid more than that, you're an audiophool.

Do you not have the retards edition, or whatever the latest stable public build is called?
It supports USB audio class2, which is what the so called expert mode exposes.

zs5's are the real deal. I don't usually care about iems because I mostly use them for running and it then comes down to comfort and the song more than detail. All you poorfags/iem fiends need to buy them if you haven't yet. They are genuinely great for the money.
>>
>>61991022
Mine are in the mail. How's the comfort and tips? Most IEMs tend to build up pressure in my ears, do the zs5s do that as well?

Try michael bolton 'once in a lifetime' on spotify or whatever you have access to. You don't have to enjoy this style in order to appreciate this song and his voice. Especially on your/our setup. I'm the guy you used to recommend anime to for a short while, and this isn't my usual music, but it sounds great regardless.

Idol trash here.
I've got a confession to make. I've plugged my HD600 to my (dell) monitor's soundbar, something that's like 15€. It does sound decent. Back on Magni2 it's an improvement, but it's not that much.

Wanna upgrade to some comfy good headphones, i have CB-1s and regret buying them, I've tried my friends beats studio 2.0's and they are so much better, but id like something as comfy as the the bose QC25 or 35, but those suck from what I've heard and i like the beats a lot, what do you guys recommend?

Price range 100$ maximum
I use my LG V20 to commute to school and use my desktop aswell, i have an old sound card that helps the CB-1'S but not crazy, (got it for free)

Yeah, like I said a few posts below, it's not my style either but the power of drink makes certain things sound much better, and his voice sounds great on that song.

I'm always tipsy at minimum when I come here, and honestly I don't care about this stuff on a serious level, but I do love japan in general, though I could never watch a 1hr+ video on that. It's just not my thing. Give me a 60fps catchy video/tune and we're talking though.

Not as good quality as i was hoping, sound wise, comfort wise eh was nice but not my ideal,
Also 32 ohms so i couldn't put my V20 in high impendence mode and they sound quiet as hell on my V20, i can't put it in the mode manually as the phone itself detects the impendence of the headphones etc, you can trick it with an adapter but id rather have nicer headphones, last time i said anything bad about the CB-1s people just sperged out and it was stupid

Is there a specific reason it has to be from Aliexpress? The standard recommendations for sub-$100 here are SHP9500S (erring from neutral on the side of brightness, non-replaceable earpads) and HD558 (erring from neutral on the side of darkness, replaceable earpads), neither of which you'll find on Aliexpress.

ANC is for blocking out low frequency noise.
As it turns out, headphones isolation is completely ineffective at low frequencies. The same goes for in-ears if you don't insert to the reference plane. ANC is built into closed headphones for general isolation.
>>

Using different earpads will change the sound, so not being able to replace the earpads with identical earpads is a legitimate drawback which should be mentioned whenever recommending the headphone.

Garbage avoid. They're a downgrade from the HD558.
HD558 is the best/coin they have. Above that, there's the HD579 which is also very good value.

It's difficult to describe properly, but open headphones usually somehow sound more natural and "right." One tangible, easily describable difference is that I can usually perceive bass resonance in closed headphones which is absent from open headphones.

Closed feels unnatural. Music is clearly coming from your cans, no matter how good. Speaking while wearing closed headphones is unpleasant as if you were underwater, and you can even hear your breathing and other such internal noises in an exaggerated manner. Using them for an extended amount of time is headache inducing.

Open feel like not wearing headphones at all. As if you were listening to music on speakers in your room, or live. Sounds within your body aren't highlighted like that, and it's possible to speak (or sing ;P) with a natural feel to it, as if you weren't wearing headphones. If loud, other people in the room can hear your music. Otherwise, a few steps away from you it's silence. You'll hear people just fine if they speak to you. They tend to be very comfortable. I can wear my HD600 all day long just fine.

Open backed headphones are simpler to construct and tune. There are some general trends in the response with open and closed backed headphones, but none of these are definite.
Closed backed headphones block out sound. If you want that, exclude open backed headphones. If you don't care, consider something open backed as well as closed.

Neither is really better.
>>
>>61992949
Open-backed is better according to Tyll from innerfidelity. And before you dispute/ask who that even is, because I know nobody but me in this thread actually read the OP and followed the link to the installgentoo wiki page, he's literally mentioned right there in the wiki for this general as a trusted source for what /hpg/ recommends.

I can't tell if you're serious or not. FWIW, I occasionally make edits to the wiki page.
Open backed headphones usually have a set of traits that are generally useful and desirable for acoustic reproduction. These desirable traits are still a step removed from the actual sound output.
>Tyll
I don't know where he said that. Tyll occasionally shows a few gaping holes in his knowledge. He performs a useful service in headphone measurements, but he has particular shortcomings in acoustics.

i want to get HE4XX for clean planer magnetic bass, but with these measurements for the bass, is that what I'll actually get?

If not, is it something that can be remedied with EQ? I'm under the impression that it's not ideal to EQ for bass because it tends to be distorted, at least for dynamics.

Bass distortion is incredibly difficult to perceive. I have literally equalized https://www.innerfidelity.com/images/KossKSC75.pdf to flat, Etymotic/planar/electrostatic-like bass without audible distortion resulting. You wouldn't think that'd be possible given the THD measurement, but it's reality. You can't hear that shit.
>>
>>61993571
If you really want good planar magnetic bass, I recommend the monolith m1060 instead, unless you're on a budget and/or don't mind waiting until December for those. Also, hifiman has kind of a shoddy reputation, whereas monoprice has been nothing but a rising star since they started.
>>
>>61993669
IEMs. Use an earmuff on top when needed.

i myself was looking into the MEE audio M6 PRO, Etymotic MK5, and the SE215.

I ended up with the SE215, but it's probably not the best value for sound quality. The earphone and the (detachable) cable is built like a brick though which is what I prioritize more for an IEM to commute with.

if you end up with any of Shure's SE215, make sure to get a clip of some sort because the cable is relatively heavy compared to the competition and this can be uncomfortable without a clip supporting the weight a bit from a shirt.
>>
>>61993743
I've had three Monoprice products and all of them broke within months, none through fault of my own. There's been a lot of reports of even second revision M1060s having problems. I maintain that Monoprice is only useful for cheap cables. They make breaking-prone Chinkshit.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, and I'm sorry to hear that you are plagued by really bad luck, but your experience is not what most people went through who ordered them. And I certainly hope you're not the type who thinks that because a handful of people complained very loudly on a certain forum, that somehow that tiny sample represents the experience of the vast majority of customers.

Did have to change the cable about 5 times though. How much longer can I expect them to live?
>>
>>61993819
I won't argue with that, but when it comes to sound, the m1060 destroy the hifiman 400/s/i/x series, and monoprice at least has decent customer support, whereas hifiman is a fucking nightmare.

>>
>>61993872
You can tell it's not because they changed to 2.5mm plugs in the 2nd rev. However, the cracking was still being reported by a tiny handful of people.

I'd also like to take a moment to point out that even the Audeze LCD-2s are known for their cracking. It's kind of why making your headphones with wood in them is a bad idea in general.
>>
>>61993844
It's completely laughable to imply that price = quality, in terms of sound or build, in the world of headphones. You should know better than that.
>>
>>61993900
Let me guess, you paid <$50 and expected non-chink shit?
>>
>>61993900
It certainly doesn't equal quality, but it's also completely laughable to argue that there is no correlation whatsoever between the two. You certainly aren't going to get the same quality sound coming from a cheapo pair of 20 dollar bargin bin headphones at Walmart compared to sennheiser HD600s. There's a certain point where you get into the realm of diminishing returns, but that's also subjective.

>open headphones generally sound better than sealed headphones. Open designs typically sound more spacious, airy, and transparent, where sealed designs are typically more congested, resonant, and closed-in sounding.
Given the small confines, sound field reverberation is going to be in similar phase as direct sound and/or crushed out by the precedence effect. The rear cavity does have utility in tuning, and presents another element that must be considered in the final sound. Subjective reports of seeming to be congested or airy are normally associated with the magnitude response.
Crosstalk factor for open backed headphones over the spectrum stays well below -20dB. For the few headphones that have even the slightest significant amount of crosstalk factor, you may notice that they aren't the ones considered to have a "large soundstage".

The 400i have been reviewed many many times as being very similar to the HD600s but a bit brighter and with more sub-bass. This means they are slightly less than neutral, but unless you are doing audio engineering work, you do not really want a completely neutral analytical sounding headphone, unless you intend to modify the sound using tube-amps, EQs, and DSPs.

For casual listening I would recommend the 400i over the HD600, but either of those headphones are extremely good for their price point, as well as the monolith m1060s, which I personally would recommend even above the HD650s.
