Idol trash here.
What's your setup like, Anon?
>>
>>61306364
You have a nice, neutral, transparent setup, anon.

That was the intent of the setup. Wouldn't want my setup to mess with umi's voice.

Are you 300% sure? Just as an extra check, what are the constraints that force you to compromise and go closed?
>>
>>61306430
I'm aware of the drawbacks but I like (and a good bit of time need) the extra isolation due to noise in the house and to not disturb others. Were my living situation different I'd be open all the way.

>Sound signature
Somewhat neutral as I listen to all genres (electronic, rock, metal, rap, classical crossover, etc), although I want something that's kinda fun-ish, not completely cold analytical
>Past headphones
ATH-M50S, been using them for about 6 years or so, and I plan on using these at work (as they're closed), but want something a bit better for home use.

Recently I've been looking at Hifiman's HE400i and HE400s, as I'm quite intrigued in getting planar magnetics for my next headphone. I know /g/ seems to be a 2 horse race between Sennheiser and Beyer shills, so this might be the wrong place to ask; but how do these headphones rate against the best at this price point? Anyone tried them and have any (unbiased) feedback about them?
>>
>>61306488
You're pretty much describing HD600 there.
>>
>>61306488
The big issue with Hifiman seems to be build quality.
>>
>>61306486
>>61306430
For reference I'm using a pair of Shure SE-215 IEMs right now, the amount of isolation is almost perfect, though maybe a little too heavy with Comply foam inserts. I'm just sick of sticking shit -in- my ears and want to go back to full-sized cans.

DT250 80 ohm
>>
>>61306488
400i is very good and the bass sounds remarkably clean. If you don't find your m50s too sharp you should find the 400i to be fine as well. Note that bass by default is very neutral and you'll have to EQ it up if you want a more "fun" sound.
I'd suggest getting them from Amazon so you don't have to worry about the QC. If you get a dud you can get it replaced immediately.
>>
>>61306395
Also DT250 80 ohm. These headphones are the DT770's terribly unappreciated, vastly superior cousin. Much more reasonable treble output while still very comfortable.

Guys I'm having trouble deciding between a Sennheiser HD 598 SR and an Audio Technica ATH-AD700X. From what I've read they're both pretty good (assuming the AD700X is the same as the AD700 except the color), and I'm having trouble deciding.
Does anyone have any feedback on the AD700X?

HD598 SR have a slightly warm sound and ATH-AD700X have a slightly cold sound. You may find the AD700X to be lacking in bass and you may find the HD598 SR to have a bit too much midbass. It's up to you whether you want to err on the side of too much midbass or not enough bass in general; whether you'd prefer a warm or cold sound. They're apples and oranges.
This board is honestly the worst place on the internet to ask for advice involving Sennheiser in any way because of our resident shitposter.
>>
>>61306993
From what I've read the bass is pretty weak but accurate. Since I'm not a fan of boom-boom I thought it wasn't a problem (on the contrary even). Is the bass so weak that it is a major problem?

>From what I've read the bass is pretty weak but accurate.
It has a substantial bass rolloff starting at 200 Hz according to this measurement. ~-6 dB at 40 Hz isn't accurate, it's bass-light. Again, it's up to you whether to err on the side of not enough bass or too much midbass. I wouldn't describe the HD598 SR as "boom boom" either; far from it. It has a small midbass boost intended to keep the bass and sub-bass from falling off a cliff like it does on most of Audio Technica's open headphones. There's an inherent compromise with open dynamics: either you boost the midbass or you accept sub-par lower bass performance.

If anyone is interested in finding out what the HD 800 or DT 880 sounds like, just use these eq settings.
>>
>>61307168
>>61307080
For comparison, HD598 shows a small 2.5 dB midbass boost here, and a 2.5 dB difference between 40 Hz and 200 Hz response, demonstrating much better low bass extension than the AD700X. It's up to you whether 2.5 dB of midbass is too much, "boom boom," etc.
I also must note that the 8-10 kHz response on >>61307168 appears problematic to me. I think a headphone has major problems when any part of its response is louder than the ~3 kHz ear canal resonance which is supposed to be there on the raw measurement. You may find that treble peak to be harsh and grating on the ears. You may also find the HD598 SR to have not enough treble. I'm not trying to steer you in either direction; just giving you what I perceive as the truth. It's your call, based on your own subjective preferences.

Lol wtf so Sennheiser has no soundstage?
>>
>>61307204
What's funny is that the HD600's supporters here routinely bash the hell out of the HD800 yet the Snapheiser troll calls them Sennshills, which is absurd.
>>
>>61307168
>>61307074
Also, is the impedance of the HD 598 SR fine for a motherboard audio chip without an amp?
My current headphones are around 32 ohm, which is roughly the same as the AD700X, but it seems the HD 598 SR is around 60 ohm with a spike above 250 ohm around 100 Hz.
>>
>>61307277
HD600/HD650 have narrow soundstage but that isn't necessarily a bad thing and is a matter of preference. Some people enjoy exaggeratedly wide AKG-style soundstage and some people hate it.
Also, contrary to popular belief, wide soundstages do not create greater positional accuracy in video games, with or without virtual surround. Virtual surround works just fine on zero-soundstage IEMs.
Soundstage is entirely a matter of personal preference and, for those of you who haven't heard headphones with both narrow and wide soundstages, I'd urge you to make no assumptions as to which you'd prefer when making buying decisions, and I'd urge you to audition headphones with wide and narrow soundstages before making buying decisions as well.
>>
>>61307300
HD598 SR can be driven just fine with onboard sound. Impedance isn't the only factor in determining how difficult a headphone is to drive; sensitivity is also a factor.

>I am selling my Sennheiser HD600 and want to grab a dac/amp for my PC.

Your question suggests not.
Anyway, with your budget, look into Fulla2 or DAC-X6.

If you're pushing your HD600 to that sort of volume level either you've got some retarded EQ preset or you're blowing out your ears. Seriously, even on quiet recordings 75% is more than enough.
>>
>>61308555
In the years I've been on /hpg/ I've come to the conclusion that /g/entlemen have widely varying opinions on what is loud enough.
>>
>>61308590
The universal loud enough is the threshold for hearing damage. Go any louder and you're just being a retard.
>>
>>61308607
There's safe limits for listening duration at levels beyond the threshold for hearing damage. I personally enjoy 90+ dB listening for less than an hour at a time. Some people also simply don't give a fuck at all, and while this may be ill-advised, they still have a right to their preference.

>>
>>61309083
The HD598 have much more balanced sound. The DT770 exaggerates bass and treble response at the expense of the midrange; HD598 exaggerates neither the bass nor the treble. You'll also probably notice the HD598 being less resonant in the bass since they're open instead of closed.

What >>61313535 told you.
Use closed if you
- have people within 2 meters
- have people in the same room and like to listen at unhealthy loud volumes
- are surrounded of loud people
- or pneumatic hammers

Otherwise, go open. It gives you some isolation regardless of open. If music is playing at a healthy volume, you won't hear most noise around you.

Bought the DT1350 like probably three years ago by now. Those things are sturdy and should last long unless you actually throw them against a wall or something. The split headband is fucking great, but they clamp on your ears. That's fine for an hour or two, but longer than that and I need to take them off for a couple minutes to relax my ears.
Soundwise I'm happy with them, but it depends what you're looking for. For that price (which is basically half of what I bought them for) you probably won't find an all-around better pair.
>>
>>61314018
>BeyerDynamic DT1350
What the fuck is that ~200 Hz dip? Looks like this will be an uncomfortable, difficult to seal headphone with boosted bass and a very uneven bass/lower midrange response.
>>
>>61314082
https://www.innerfidelity.com/images/BeyerdynamicDT1350.pdf
Raw graph confirms my suspicions of being difficult to seal. ~200 Hz dip isn't quite as severe here.
>>
>>61314082
Pretty sure that's a fuck up on GE's side, or a faulty model. There's by no means an almost 10 dB dip in the 200 Hz area. Bass is fairly equal and goes real deep, the advantage of closed cans I guess.

>>61314108
Yeah, just wanted to link that one. They're on-ear, so yes, having a good fit is important. But thanks to the adjustable and split headband, it's actually easy to get it and after a few times you put them on, you'll get it automatically.
>>
>>61313969
>PC fans? Ceiling fan? AC? I don't have any problem with those but to each their own.
yes. PC fans, AC, air purifier, .etc. They're not loud but it means I have to turn up my volume up a bit higher if I want my music to completely block the ambient noise out, as opposed to just isolating it. I also have mild tinnitus that I don't even know how I got, I've always been careful with keeping volumes down (except maybe when playing on a piano?)
>>
>>61314125
>Pretty sure that's a fuck up on GE's side, or a faulty model.
I wouldn't assume either. See:
https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/technologically-impressive-lcd-4-planar-magnetic-headphone-manufacturers-comments
https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/head-fi-contradicts-innerfidelity-sony-mdr-z1r-measurements
tl;dr: It's not uncommon for measurements by different people/equipment to differ drastically and there's a lot of potential reasons for this. It's complicated.
>>
would anyone recommend the MDR 1000X?

I read tons of amazing things about it but im paranoid now cuz i hear a lot of people also have cracking and breaking in the headband
>>
>>61314137
Damn, those are some huge differences in the high frequencies.
So, what is there to take from this? When comparing headphones, always only from one source? When looking at one pair of headphones only, try to get as many measurements as possible to identify a potential outlier and try to average all the results?

The IF measurement is a year and a half older than the GE measurement, so if the new pads are responsible for the difference in frequency response between those two measurements then the GE measurement with the giant bass dip is more representative of the current product.

It seems implausible that GE measured the older version and IF measured the newer version when IF's measurement was 1.5 years older. I guess we can't assume 100%, but it seems implausible.

>>
>>61316340
I don't know if this applies to Mk3 but I got the less expensive T40RP Mk2 on the assumption that the little cup vent felt was the only difference from the T50RP Mk2. I opened it up and noticed the back of the drivers had more dried glue seeping over the paper vent and each had a dot mark that was a different color than in photos of the T50RP Mk2 drivers on the internet. I guess you pay more for better quality control pretty much but to be honest I didn't think the gluing made much of a sonic difference when I experimented with the backwave modding. That was around 2010-2011.

I own something called a Roland Quad Capture. It's a USB sound interface for XLR mics and so on.
I plug my cans straight into it nad I have a pair of closed backs for voice work, and that's dandy.

However I'd like a pair of good open backs for tv, movies and vidya.

The problem here is that this Roland UA-55 box has quite a high output impedance, and that if I need to find a pair of cans with 5 - 10 times as high impedance, I may not be able to drive them.

Any quick ideas?

I'll just assume that it's fine then.

I recently built a new computer and had some rokit 6 speakers laying around. I plugged them directly into my computer with sine xlr plugs. >There are a number of strategies that can be used to reduce the change of noise injury from other instrumentalists. Musicians ear plugs are generally “flat” so that bass and treble notes are not relatively favored, thus distorting perception. Nevertheless, a “vented” ear plug can be used to tune the ear cavity to low frequencies, which are less damaging. Drummers should use musicians ear plugs, such as the ER-25. Guitarists and vocalists can use the less attenuating ER-15. Too much ear protection can result in overplaying and not enough protection can result in hearing loss.

Not really related to music listening and the like that it seems like this general is aimed towards, but I've got a question regarding wireless headsets for PC.

I get an awful lot of static/background noise when using a wired mic, tried both front and back 3.5mm ports, as well as a 3.5mm to USB passthrough. It doesn't seem to be related to ambient fan noise as I can walk 10 feet from my PC or cup the microphone and the noise is still there.

I know it could be anything, but I've got two questions.

One, at the moment I've got a decent pair of studio monitors that for some reason are extremely loud. Everything I play has to be at 1-5% volume or it's deafening. Could the reason the static is so prominent be because I'm listening to things on such a low volume, which sounds fine in my ears, but there's a disparity with microphone playback being so loud, and thus the static being prominent?

And secondly, would a wireless headset help at all? I'm in the market as my old microphone headset broke and these studio monitors have no microphone, so I'm having to wrap my old pair of broken headphones around my neck to use the mic while using my monitors. But I'm not sure if it would help at all, if the issue is with static issues inside my PC, or dodgy I/O, etc.
