What does fglt think about non-Linux GNU distros?

GNU/Hurd, GNU/kFreeBSD, GNU/kNetBSD etc?

Hurd is interesting, but it will take some years till it's 100% usable, afaik current version is 0.9. Didn't try the BSD ports, but they seems to be just some rather useless experiments.

I've used GNU/Linux for long enough, I think, so how hard or easy would it be for me to try one of the BSD distros?
>>
>>61121804

Not all my shirts are red or purple, but many are. I like those colors.

None of my shirts carry messages (such as words or symbols). That practice strikes me as lacking dignity, almost like being a sandwich man, so I won't wear clothing with symbols, not even for causes I support. This is not a matter of ethical disapproval, so I don't mind selling hats and shirts with free software slogans on behalf of the FSF; but I choose not to wear them myself.

What don't you like about kde/gnome that might be fixed in other DEs?
>>
>>61122413
The whole point is that we can't because systemd makes other things depend on it. "Don't like systemd? Don't use it!" becomes "Don't like systemd? Don't use gnome!". It nearly became "Don't use tmux!" too.

Other software projects don't press third party developers into adding hard dependencies for their software. Why can't this be the case with systemd?
>>
>>61122413
I need pulseaudio, which has systemd as a dependency.
>>
>>61122585
Why would software depend on it?
I mean, I can see GNOME, a whole DE, depending on it, but what about other software? They surely provide a
--disable-systemd
configure option.
>>
>>61122574
I haven't really checked for that, I just find KDE to be bloated and Gnome works a bit redundant. Like if I'd compile and install a program, it wouldn't do .desktop the way I want it in the applications menu
>>
>replying to redmumbai shills
>>
>>61122425
Not him, but if I install another WM along with the WM that comes with my DE, the only change will be that I will get the option to log in through both WMs in the login screen, right?
So if I break something in the other WM, I can always switch back to the stock one.
>>
>>61122657
what?
>>
>>61122585
Install Gentoo, it uses OpenRC instead of systemd by default.
>>
>>61122637
>I can see GNOME, a whole DE, depending on it
Do you really mean that? Do you think it makes sense that you should be forced to use a specific init system, DNS resolver, system logger, entropy gatherer and fuck if I remember what else just because you want to use a certain DE? Especially considering that before systemd came around gnome worked just fine regardless of the software you chose for each of those tasks.

>>61122657
Even if that particular poster turned out to be a shill, there are people lurking that are not shills and may believe the "arguments against systemd are just flat-earth lunacy" propaganda if not shown otherwise.

>>61122740
Thank you for the advice. I use Devuan myself. Still, that doesn't change the fact that distro maintainers shouldn't have to fork packages to remove hard dependencies on specific init systems, DNS resolvers, etc.

I guess that the game/Terraria script doesn't get into the game/ directory. Shouldn't line 5-6 do exactly that? But if execution got to line 40, that must mean that the directories are passed down right, because if the file didn't exist, execution would be stopped by the if statement that you added.

No problem.
Noveau drivers (the free and open source drivers for nvidia gpus) struggle with basics because the company itself is extremely hostile to the practice of open source and doesn't make it easy for the community.
Their proprietary drivers work fine.

If you ever wondered - with AMD it's exactly the other way around. Community drivers work great and are stable, proprietary catalyst drivers are a huge pile of shit

Devuan.
Init wise, pretty fucking good, after years of dealing with systemdicks you get to appreciate the simplicity of some things. I've yet to encounter a problem on both laptop and homeserver installations that was related to it not-having-systemd, which I definitely consider a success on their part.

I'm nervously waiting for them to move over to the next stable which I was told it's going to take a while.
Really sad, I really expected Devuan to stay up do date with Debian. I've heard a rumor that Ascii will run OpenRC (like gentoo) instead of just sysvinit, so this might be the reason for the hold up. No idea frankly.

On files it just unlinks them so any slowness on individual files is down to the file system. The was a problem with gnu coreutils iterating over large directories slowly because the buffers passed to listdir, or whatever, only holds a few thousand dirents so they have to call it lots. There are special purpose replacements for that case floating round.

Hell even the default location for the volume changed popup is the same location as the volume change area of the panel. Meaning you can only move the volume up or down one notch before the popup springs up and blocks your mouse. This is straight out the box I didn't move around anything, it comes broken needing to be fixed. Who the fuck designed this.

gtk is the total opposite of that though? They completely changed everything for gtk3 and broke hundreds, if not thousands, of themes.
Go download a random theme from gnome-look or whatever, and chances are it will come with gtk-3.0 specific themeing and STILL be broken. Although I'm sure by now if you download the top themes you're going to be fine. But honestly go take a look back a themes a few years old, download any of them and it'll be broken in gtk3 applications, and not just broken meaning it drops you to the default theme, I mean windows show up all black, or nothing has any borders including buttons.

I wouldn't think mpt-probe would do that, but then it shouldn't be running for an input device. For me mtp-probe is in /lib/udev/ and it is run from /lib/udev/rules.d/69-libmtp.rules
I dunno if it is different on systemd based systems though. You can check your vendor and product IDs are not in that rules file (would be weird) and/or mv mtp-probe away for a bit and/or replace it with a shell script that 0 or 1 to check if it is that doing it I suppose.

I don't use upowerd ether, which is the one printing the actual error message.

Does it get past grub? If so maybe try adding nomodeset to the kernel command line.
>>

man touch fsdk more yes

So I have to choose between a workstation based on Windows 10 or RHEL. Is there any reason not to go with RHEL? This is a workstation for scientific computing.

Pic not related
>>
>>61132455
it gets passed grub on the live install yeah

where is the kernal command line?
>>
>>61132567
Are the programs you're going to be using offered nativly in linux? if not, windows
>>
>>61132630
Yeah they're all offered. Run Fedora on my home desktop, but have one software at work that is only supported on Windows and RHEL. But RHEL has a pretty large subscription fee that I doubt I'll ever use (course it isn't my money...)
>>
>>61132573
Not on the live one, on the broken on.
On the grub menu edit the entry like
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/reset_root_password
Unde the Using_GRUB_to_invoke_bash heading. Except just add nomodeset instead of init=whatever and skip the last three steps.

Why not CentOS or Scientific Linux?
>>
>>61132567
What "scientific computing" are we talking about?

Generally GNU/Linux works much better as a production environment than Windows does, with the exception of this >>61132630

If you know you won't be missing any windows specific tools then definitely go with GNU/Linux.
However, if you do need to stay with Windows I would still recommend getting a terminal emulator with something like cygwin so you get a lot of the GNU/Linux tools as well.

Also, does it have to be RHEL? There are better options if you have the choice.
>>
>>61132816
>>61132674
Just to make it clear that CentOS and SL are basically RHEL. Red Hat used to recommend CentOS if you didn't want to pay and now they bought it.
>>
>>61132567
I have a choice between X and Y.
>>61132816
Why not W or Z?
>>61132897
There are other options than Y!

Fuck this board can be depressing.

i cant get to the grub menu on the broken one at all

i did some research and it seems my ionode size is 256 and that to boot it has to be 128. is this true? why would the debian partition tool set my size wrong
>>
>>61132964
Red Hat themselves recommend CentOS.
Whatever just use rhel then fag.
>>
>>61132986
Dunno, the default inode size is listed in /etc/mke2fs.conf on debian as 256. You can check it with sudo tune2fs -l /dev/sdxy
>>
>>61133023
yeah i checked and mine was 256

christ idk what's wrong. i guess i'll try again tomorrow. maybe i'll just do one partition

So on my current- outdated- setup for usb tethering I just put
allow-hotplug usb0
iface usb0 inet dhcp
metric 30

In /etc/network/interfaces and then tell my phone to tether and thats it.
Is there an easy way to do it with systemd and the new predictable naming scheme? Because according to arch wiki you have to create a udev rules file and a service file for ... each specific usb port that you might use? Or do it manually each time.

Linux is a program which runs directly on top of ram.

What it does is allows programs an interface to operate on the hardware and separates programs from each other so they can't interfere with each other in ram. If Linux was not babysitting each program then programs could look into each other's rams and know what the secure contents were.

In essence all Linux does is host drivers and separate ram.

The programs that run atop Linux are much more crucial than Linux itself. These programs are the applications that actually drive the industry and cause work to be done. They would be available to us even if the Linux kernel had never existed.

At the base of these applications is the GNU system. The Gnu's Not Unix acronym is really just an excuse to make a free GNU clone. GNU clearly is almost identical to Unix.

Unix itself was a timesharing system that was designed to squeeze as much juice as possible out of old mainframes which were highly expensive and did not have alot of resources.

The reason Unix was good was not just that the utilities were good but because most of the early business and military applications were ported to UNIX making UNIX one of the most mature and backwards compatible systems still surviving today.

However one must remember that UNIX was designed to emulate lisp systems. If one studies the history of UNIX it was made around the same goals of the BASIC system. This goal was to replicate the timesharing abilities and functional programming abilities that John McCarthy was working on. McCarthy's system proved to be the most robust and versatile but at the time it was very slow and also very privately owned.

Now that Lisp systems are open source there is no reason to keep ourselves under the guise that either the GNU system or the Linux system are highly necessary.

All that is necessary for a modern Lisp system to exist is simply to run a single process consuming all computer resources directly on top of the Linux Kernel.
