I ran into a weird problem.

I'm on arch. I'm using AMDGPU. Using KDE (no bully)
I launched a game through steam with the "stream" option so it ran off a windows PC. First time trying this. After playing a bit and closing it out, it seemed like my DE was all.. stuck.
Like I couldn't minimize windows. I couldn't alt-tab. I could right click on windows, but clicking "close" did nothing. But I could close them with their close button for most of them.
I ended up having to reboot the machine to "fix" it.

Scares the shit out of me to have a problem like that.
When I tried again, the same thing didn't happen, which just makes me feel even more uncomfy.

I'm trying to setup a systemd unit file to increase the sensitivity of the trackpoint on my chinkpad at startup, which is dog slow by default. tpspeed.sh works when I execute it directly as a root but I keep getting permission errors when I try to use the service I made and do
systemctl start tpspeed

echo -n 225 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/serio2/sensitivity
echo -n 225 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/serio2/speed

journalctl -xe gives:

May 06 13:34:02 purgatory.mbase.int audit[2318]: AVC avc:  denied  { execute } for  pid=2318 comm="(speed.sh)" name="tpspeed.sh" dev="dm-1" ino=789671 scontext=system_u:system_r:init_t:s0 tco

Hello /fglt/! I want to permanently switch to Linux for programming purposes, I don't really game at all anymore. I was thinking about going to Kubuntu or Fedora. However the ONLY thing that is holding me back is that my motherboard is a bit fucked. I have an i7 6700k and despite the temperature never going above 35C my motherboard thinks BDPROCHOT is going and throttles my system. I have to run a program on Windows called Throttlestop to not have my processor downclock itself to 500MHz.

What can I do? Does something like this exist on Linux? I saw an UbuntuForum post where the programmer for Throttlestop posted the registers involved that he messes around with, but I don't feel comfortable enough with C to write a program to do what he did.

Am I forever destined to be on Windows?

I assume it's ext4.
You have no write permissions for the drive. Change the owner/group (what I'd do) or give everyone write permissions (I wouldn't do this).
>>
>>60250208
ffmpeg expects a final argument which is the title of the output file ("done/$file"). Maybe try moving the threads option in front of the output file name. Looks like your subtitle filter is also getting confused.

I tried playing around with the "'s around subtitle and the $file but it proved fruitless.Removing threads count completely resulted in the same error

Looks like there's simply no files ending in .mkv in that dir, so file is empty, so the subtitles filter doesn't know what to do.

The files i have are soft coded subtitles, my media player dosent detect the subtitiles,and im stuck with just this one media player as an option.The subtitles are embedded in the file,i know the command line works because if i do that command line without variables and do it manually,it works.The subtitles are pointing the filter to the file for the embedded subtitles and it then hard encodes it,so that the subtitles appear as part of the video its self without the media client having to look for embedded subs

Wait wait wait, so you have a file containing video data (ending in .mkv), and you have a file containing the subtitles, and you want both the audiovisual data from the mkv file AND the subtitles hardcoded to be within one single mkv file.
What is the input file for the subtitles? Is it an srt file? Is it the same mkv file that also contains the audio-visual data?

Bash, it's the standard. No one with a job cares about shell
>>
>>60251501
That's the point. /bin/sh is just a symlink to whatever shell you like. /bin/bash is an actual binary. If your shebang says "interpret this program using the shell /bin/sh" then the system uses the shell that /bin/sh links to and uses that. You don't know what shell the user might have /bin/sh pointing to, and it might not be compatible with the shell that you used to test your program, unless you took care to conform to POSIX standards and you know the user's shell understands these.
Little example.

$ cd /tmp
$ echo '#!/bin/sh
-- echo "This is my shell script."' > tmpfile
$ cat tmpfile
#!/bin/sh
echo "This is my shell script."
$ chmod u+x tmpfile
$ ./tmpfile # assuming that /bin/sh points to a "sensible" shell like /bin/bash
This is my shell script."
$ ls -l /bin/sh
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Mai 7 00:53 /bin/sh -> dash
$ sudo ln -sf /bin/cat /bin/sh
$ ./tmpfile # /bin/sh is now cat, so the entire file gets catted.
#!/bin/sh
echo "This is my shell script."

shell binarys behave differently when called as "sh"
even when you only have bash installed, invoking a script a sh speeds it up, sine bash enters posix sh mode

Well that's my question, what's a lightweight browser?

I know my computer is a POS but heck, I installed Minecraft for shits and giggles and it actually runs full speed. I've compiled a bunch of stuff, I can use something as heavy as Eclipse or LibeOffice just fine, and I basically never have any problems in my day-to-day usage. I'd have expected to be able to load a web page properly.

It's not the JS executing or anything like that either, because like I said I can run browser games just fine.

Forgive me for being a dumb nigger but I have no idea - the thinkpad has integrated Intel graphics, does that count as hardware acceleration?
I'm using an SSD. I've also used Firefox on hard drives before, on relatively high-performance desktop PCs, and never experienced this difficult page load slowdown.

I've used linux for almost a decade but this is my first computer with UEFI and not bios.
I installed arch and grub, rebooted and arch and windows were listed and it worked fine. Once I booted into windows 10 and then rebooted instead of booting into grub, it just went straight to windows.
When I go into my efi to try and change the boot device the drive with arch is no longer listed.
I thought that I probably just messed something up so I tried again with ubuntu but the same exact thing happened.
I want to attempt the install again tonight. how do I avoid/fix this?

Midori is lightweight, if you can prevent it from crashing long enough to use it

yes Intel graphics are accelerated (and quite polished in linux desu)
I just figured that if you were using Icecat you were trying to avoid firmware blobs/binaries
I am also using a x220 and using Firefox but I don't experience slow downs like you are having
Icecat does use libreJS, but I don't know how optimized it is compared to the alternatives and JS is the biggest thing I could think of that would be
causing huge slow downs

Hi /fglt/. I have a few sites that I'd like to mirror quickly without getting banned, and I happen to have two different internet connections where I work, one I can access through ethernet and the other one through Wifi. I wonder if it is possible to configure both of them on my laptop so that I can run a wget instance on each one. I know it's possible to bond interfaces to use them all at the same time, but as far as I can tell there's no way to control what goes where.

>>60252589
I don't know if this is still the case, but a long time ago I installed IceCat on an old laptop and it was noticeable slower than Iceweasel on Debian. Try installing Firefox from your distro repos and see if it's different.

That's kind of the point, it removes the inconvenience for the developers and instead passes it on to the users (translation: providing a shitty user experience out of laziness). Copyleft is when the license has an viral effect which makes a fork of a copylefted program also a copyleft program. Public domain doesn't have such rules/protections. Public domain also has the problem that its definition changes from country to country, so its always a good idea to use a public domain licence like CC0. Public domain is GPL compatible. All you need to know about systemd is that ironically systemd wouldn't be able to exist today if we had been using systemd's design philosophy on GNU/Linux from the beginning.

In other words, we'd be stuck with outdated technology and only able to replace it if we create another monolithic init system that interacted with everything in exactly the same way systemd does.

Systemd is basically exploiting the flexibility of its predecessors to kill the flexibility we have in the area of init systems. People might like it now, but we're walking into a walled garden.
After systemd becomes the standard and everything depends on it systemd will never receive any competition because it would be an extremely monumental task to try and create a systemd alternative.

All the newbies here support systemd because it "just werks". But using things just because it works is a very Windows mentality.
They're forgetting (because init systems isn't really on their radar in the first place) that the reasons we all use GNU/Linux in the first place is for flexibility, being able to do things _our_ way not the way someone getting paid to do their job decided we should do it, and design philosophies.
Systemd is the exact opposite of all of that.

I have a graphics tablet (Huion 610pro) which I managed to get working on mint with help from https://askubuntu.com/questions/500141/huion-h610-tablet and it was working just fine back at the end of January.

I tried using it again yesterday and for some reason I can only see the stylus using xsetwacom -- list rather than pad and stylus.

Any ideas why this happened or how to fix it?
