Hey /g/, what meaningful differences are there between Plasma and lightweight DEs like lxqt and others. I've heard that lightweight DEs don't have thumbnails, advanced search, poor USB compatibility. What other things are there? I like minimalism but not at the expense of critical functionality.

Hello there! You seem to have used the term "open source".
The term "open source" was created by a group of people that did not want to be associated with the free software movement. When I say "free" software (which is one of the alternatives preferable to "open source"). It's not about price; in that case I would say "gratis", or "free as in free beer". It's about "freedom"! This is what the free software movement is fighting for.
So what is "free" software? Free software is any software that guarantees the user the four essential software freedoms:
> 0. Run the program as you wish.
> 1. Study the source code and change it so it does what you wish.
> 2. Redistribute exact copies of the program.
> 3. Distribute your modified version of the program.
Some people decided that they wanted to restrict the user; but being able to study and modify the "open source" code is not enough! This is directly hurting the cause of the free software movement because it takes away the sociological "freedom" aspect of free software and turns it into a technological one.
So for those reasons I ask that in the future you use the terms "free", "free/libre" or, if necessary "FLOSS" (short for "free/libre and open source"), though the latter should still be avoided.

I have a problem with my Samsung monitor.
Under Windows it displays colours normally, but under Linux it's too contrasty, I thought it was the drivers, but I dont think so anymore.
It's not the output either because screenshots of Linux viewed under windows look normal
Then I got the idea it might be colour profiles, so i started tinkering, but the Gnome/Unity colour tools wont let me calibrate, the button is greyed out.
I even had Samsung Techsupport "IT specialist" call me and all they told me was "yeah uh, I dunno about Linux man, I cant even read out the basic colour profile delivered via the driver. You're on your own, man!"
Any help?

A DE is a collection of software.
Thumbnails depend on the file manager. Every one I know has a thumbnail/preview view.
Advanced search is built into the file manager, so it depends on that.
USB compatibility is on the kernel level and it works the same.

Doesn't KDE ship there own FM? Won't using a diff one under Plasma cause error?

Yes, KDE has their file manager. Every desktop environment has one. That doesn't mean you can't use other software "with" KDE Plasma.

>Yes I know but some DEs make USB usage easier by detecting it when plugged and mounting automatically.
Most file managers implement some sort of automatic removable drive monitoring. At worst you have to install additional packages.

Trying to limit mpv to only 1 instance. My approach was to check if one is already running, if yes, kill it and start a new one. Here's the Bash script, but it doesn't work. It terminates the new instance as well. What am I doing wrong?

if pidof "mpv"; then
pkill "mpv"
mpv "$1"
else
mpv "$1"

replace

Lets say theres a security bug in a program you must use every day. If its free, you can fix it, most likly someone else already fixed it. Show me how you do this with nonfree software, cuck.

The problem wasn't that you shitposted as a free software advocate, but that you did it in relation to a problem where it doesn't apply. Yes, planes use proprietary software. However, the passengers aren't using the nonfree software. It would be more appropriate to ask why he still uses nonfree javascripts to connect to McDonald's WiFi.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

I have a USB connected Harddrive with MOST of my stuff on it. It's called "MyBook"
On the previous Linux installation (Ubuntu 16.04) it one day decided to be called "MyBook1", which fucked up my bookmarks and filing system
On THIS installation (also Ubuntu 16.04), it just decided to be called "wwn-0x50014ee2....."
Why does that happen and how can I reverse/prevent it?
it's still called "MyBoon" in the explorer, just the adress seems to be fucked up

How do I disable a device on Linux? On Windows I just go to the device manager and click on a button.

I'm trying to mount a .vhdx file using libguestfs-tools so I can access some files from an old windows backup. The command to do this is

guestmount --add yourVirtualDisk.vhdx --inspector --ro /mnt/anydirectory

In my case, I'm trying:

guestmount --add //media/root/My Book/WindowsImageBackup/Steves_Computer/Backup 2017-05-03 215309/8d5ab3a8-0da8-11e4-81d7-806e6f6e6963.vhdx --inspector --ro /mnt///media/root/oldfiles/

In the hopes that this will give me a bunch of files I can look at in the file browser with the original structure intact inside //media/root/oldfiles/.
But there seems to be a problem with folders that have spaces in their names, because it gives me this:

//media/root/My: No such file or directory.

How do I get this to work? (and yes, I know I'm an idiot, I ended up in this situation because I am an idiot)

so i understand that linux systems generally are far more secure and less likely to get viruses on them, but if you do get infected by something that do you do? serious question since there seems to be so few antivirus programs for linux, and also because i only really know windows
>>
>>60238107
On GNU/Linux you install software via package managers from repos of the distro maintainers. It's almost unlikly that someone would ever create something malicious and it goes into these repos (except when you have repos with nonfree software). So, whatever you install, is basically clean, but be aware of community repos where everyone can contribute, since these are usually not audited.

You really don't need any Antivirus. There is clamav which can check for windows specific malware, which can be useful when you dualboot.

Most Antivirus programs/personal firewalls are scam anyway. Read this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/security for actualy security on GNU/Linux systems.

I had the same request yesterday. Umpv doesn't work for me, because it only appends videos to the end of the playlist. I want it to replace the current video.

With some help I managed to find a simple solution. Basically use this script, make it executable, put it in your $PATH.

#!/bin/bash

pid="$(pidof mpv)"

if [[ $pid ]]; then
kill "$pid"
fi

mpv "$1"

Then add this desktop file (in .local/share/applications if you don't want it globally). Then you can associate it with video files from your file manager.

imho linux shouldn't be used as a gaming system. linux is for workflow, not entertainment. if you want an entertainment station, you have an entertainment station - use the necessary packages/libs on an isolated linux distro based around gaming. if you want to have work-linux, get server-grade hardware, or use a business laptop and learn how to use linux

if you mix work and play you don't get good things

videogames are sold entertainment. windows is sold entertainment, too, as an extension to that

It's supposed to give you more performance; only anti-feature about it is closed source, it's up to you. Latest kernel is not that important though, but it's your choice

type "woman are" and "man are", google doesn't censor this; although it uses different ways (type white happy couple on google images)

Anyone knows if Trisquel uses libre-linux? On their website it says they are using " patches" from libre-linux, but OS never calls itself "Trisquel GNU/Linux-Libre" it just calls "GNU/Linux" Parabola calls itself Linux-Libre, for reference

Exactly like that. It works now though. I have no idea why.

>use sh, it's 2000x faster
Not really in this case and it doesn't matter in most cases. On my distribution sh is a symlink to Bash.

>replace [[ with [ and always quote variables
Fixed that now.

It seems like that chcking for running mpv processes, getting their PID and killing it specifically is overkill now, but it wouldn't work any other way while I was trying to solve it yesterday.

>>60244407

You're an idiot. Why do you think that a regular microcode update would add a backdoor? Why wouldn't there be a backdoor already installed?
Your idiocy is beyond comprehension.

[[ on bash [ or test on sh, bash supports both because it's compatible, but not vice versa
>>
>>60244449

>if bash is invoked as sh, it behaves like sh
But does it affect startup time? Even if it does affect it, it's 0,0002 seconds in this case and that's negligible.
>>
>>60244440
Remote access already is a backdoor.

Is there a "just works" solution to transfer files between gnu/linux and an Android device on the same network?

Software Data Cable app on the play store sets up an FTP server on the phone you can connect to with your file manager or a command-line FTP client. I believe it has a read/write option.
>>
>>60244616
Install termux on the android device and set up ssh. It will even work if your phone and your computer are not on the same network.
>>
>>60244616
I use some ftp server app to host an ftp server with my phone, then access it to move files.

I tried formatting 2 USB Sticks that I used for Ubuntu installation and running Memtest
Then i tried formatting them. This is the result. One is 4GB, the other 64GB. I can only access the frontmost partition, but it won't allow any pasting or creating of new files. The relation of total space and formatted space seems to be the same on both sticks.
All options in the dropdown menu are greyed out for the free space

Any pointers?

Are you sure of the keysym generated?

Have you restart/reload i3?
Did you modify the correct config file?

Logging out and back in fixed the problem. And yes i restarted i3 after making changes.
