If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Just installed diablo 2 and there's a weird bug. I got this weird white layout when I play. If I make a screenshot you see the picture normally as if there's no bug

These boards are for the support of Arch Linux, and Arch ONLY

If you have installed Archbang, Antegros, Chakra, Evo/Lution, Manjaro, Whatever, you are NOT running Arch Linux. Similarly, if you followed some random video on YouTube or used an automated script you found on a blog, you are NOT running Arch Linux, so do not expect any support, sympathy or anything but your thread being closed and told to move along.

Arch is a DIY distro: if someone else has done it for you, then showing up here asking to have your hand held for more help is just help vampirism and is not welcome.

zsh is a meme made up by macfags who got greeted with an outdated bash shell, so they thing bash is shit, don't bother reading the manpage and so they install zsh, write blogs about how much more awesome zsh is and created even a whole community -> oh-my-zsh everyone on /g/ is praising but it's basically 70% macOS aliases and other crap you can set up yourself

that said, zsh has some averanges like, floating point math (so you don't need to use bc) and with oh-my-zsh a bunch of neat autocompletitions, which can be useful, at least when you don't know what you are doing anyway

>Much of the Open Source community tries to advertise the community as one happy place to the outside. Where contributions are valued only by their technical quality, and everybody meets at conferences for beers.

>Well, it is not like that. It's quite a sick place to be in.

>I don't usually talk about this too much, and hence I figure that people are really not aware of this, but yes, the Open Source community is full of assholes, and I probably more than most others am one of their most favourite targets. I get hate mail for hacking on Open Source. People have started multiple "petitions" on petition web sites, asking me to stop working (google for it). Recently, people started collecting Bitcoins to hire a hitman for me (this really happened!). Just the other day, some idiot posted a "song" on youtube, a creepy work, filled with expletives about me and suggestions of violence. People post websites about boycotting my projects, containing pretty personal attacks. On IRC, people /msg me sometimes, with nasty messages, and references to artwork in 4chan style. And there's more. A lot more.

I actually, unironically agree.

What does Pottering do? He writes free software. Which is good. Nobody is forced to use the software he is wrote. If a distribution is forcing you to use certain software, blame the distro, not him. The whole systemd meme thing went pretty much too far.

>git shouldn't have used sha1 in the first place
You didn't read a single word, did you?
(1) What's the difference between using a hash for security vs using a hash for object identifiers in source control management?

Both want to use cryptographic hashes, but they want to use them for different reasons.

A hash that is used for security is basically a statement of trust: and if you can fool somebody, you can make them trust you when they really shouldn't. The point of a cryptographic hash there is to basically be the source of trust, so in many ways the hash is supposed to fundamentally protect against people you cannot trust other ways. When such a hash is broken, the whole point of the hash basically goes away.

In contrast, in a project like git, the hash isn't used for "trust". I don't pull on peoples trees because they have a hash of a4d442663580. Our trust is in people, and then we end up having lots of technology measures in place to secure the actual data.

First off, installing vanilla Ubuntu is much more easy than installing Windows.

That said, even normalfags who "don't care" actually care when you laugh abou them, they may ask "why r u laughing faggot?" building room for discussion about the problems with running a completly proprietary operating system.

Here we see the fantasy of the anon. He thinks that laughing at someone and making fun of them creates dialouge, when in fact it does the opposite. In his fantasy, making fun of someone makes them receptive, while in the real world, it gets you ignored at best, and comes across as antagonizing at worst.

Next week I'm purchasing a second-hand Sony Vaio computer with Windows 10 installed on it. Because it only have 4gb of ram, I'm wanting to install ubuntu, because I've heard that it takes up a fraction of the ram and is a good step into a more neet way of customizing my experience. My old computer is a pre-owned Alienware 15x with 8gb of ram and I have things like rainmeter and several other things to customize the look and feel of my desktop experinence as well as other things.

My issue is this. I've found many decent alternatives to programs that I want/need to use. I don't game much at all so that doesn't bother me.
BUT all I've done in terms of ricing before is very basic and has required no real knowledge of processes hiding in the background.
I've only riced for a more aesthetically pleasing desktop, ect.

Where should I begin when I install Ubuntu? Is Ubuntu even the flavour that I should be using with such a limited skill set?
What should I be doing to get things running as smoothly and easily as they are on my Win7 setup? What should I be researching first, what do I need to learn how to do so that I'm not stuck with something I don't know how to use the minute I get it running?

Pic related, my current desktop on my Win7 Alienware.

yes, learn about different desktop environments, maybe try a couple of them out on Ubuntu in a VM, see which one you like and stick with that for the time being
the most prominent ones:
- Unity (the default Ubuntu DE)
- GNOME (the one Unity is based on)
- KDE
- Xfce
- lxde (really lightweight)
- Cinnamon (default Mint DE)
you can use multiple DE's at once, but it's best to stick with just one in the end, because your system will be very bloated at best

Reminder that you don't need a client to control mpd; you just can send it the commands you want mpd to do. For example, to get a list of supported commands run this:
printf '%s\n' "${@:-commands}" | nc localhost 6600

With bash, it's even possible to control mpd with the shell only, without additional programs like nc, for example:

    exec 3<> /dev/tcp/localhost/6600;
printf "${@:-currentsong}\nclose\n" 1>&3;
cat 0<&3 | sed '1d;$d'

Boring examples:

Generate a random hex colour:
printf '#%s\n' "$(openssl rand -hex 3)"

or generate a random mac address.
openssl rand -hex 6 | sed 's/\(..\)/\1:/g; s/.$//'

etc, or for some actual fun, here a loop that changes the background color using the hex variant from above:

It's damn easy actually. Most of the programs you install will be something like
sudo apt install steam
if you go with any ubuntu flavor or derivative. Anything not in the stock repos will be easy as doing a web search for a PPA and dropping the command in your terminal (it's easy). Manjaro is also pretty noob friendly since it comes set up with yaourt and you will be able to find damn near everything program you will need in there.

It's not hard it will probably be pretty exciting and you will probably have a pretty good grasp of it inside of a week and be disgusted at the old way you used to install programs/update etc.

Ubuntu is a great place to start. Check out the flavors (come with different desktop environments) and pick one you like and make a live usb try it out and install it (i reccomend LiLi to make the live usb on Windows). Once installed if you want to you can install as many DEs as you want and switch between them as you please from the login screen.

Ubuntu is incredibly easy and a great OS. Don't listen to the literal Microsoft shills.

I just had the weirdest laptop failure. I'm running Arch on a few year old Thinkpad. The machine was turned on as I picked it up from the table to put it on my lap. Then suddenly, it just powers off like someone pulled the plug and there was no battery. Few seconds pass and the machine automatically starts to boot again. It goes through the boot manager just fine, the login prompt shows up and POOF, there goes the power again. I repeat this process couple times with no progress. At this point, some kind of hardware failure, like the motherboard, was starting to seem likely. I had some old live usb stick lying around so I decided to try out booting that. To my surprise, everything worked just fine. I reboot the machine normally this time and, what do you know, Arch boots with no problems. After 20 minutes, the machine is still behaving normally.

Any ideas what could have caused this?

Even fucking rms admits that the direct effect of non-free games on GNU/Linux is likely to be positive:
https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/nonfree-games.en.html
>However, if you're going to use these games, you're better off using them on GNU/Linux rather than on Microsoft Windows. At least you avoid the harm to your freedom that Windows would do.
>My guess is that the direct good effect will be bigger than the direct harm.

However, we should not celebrate Steam. But hoping to not get it is probably not good, either.

The propaganda for animal rights / vegetarianism / veganism is doing pretty well nowadays, and they also do it kind of like that: they insist that eating meat (and other animal products) is always bad, but they also advocate things like lacto-ovo-vegetarianism and "vegan challenges" like "don't eat meat for a month" and "vegan days" (in school etc).
Their message is: if you can't stop completely, at least do what you can. If you can't be a vegan, be a lacto-ovo-vegetarian. If you can't be that, at least drop your consumption of meat by half. Etc. If you can't 100%, do 50%, there is no excuse then.

"C:\" is the contents of $prefix/drive_c, where "$prefix" is the wine prefix in use, by default ~/.wine
so "C:\Diablo II" would be "~/.wine/drive_c/Diablo II" with the default prefix

worth noting you don't need d2multi at all, you can run it multiple times simply by using multiple wine prefixes, since prefixes can't see processes from other prefixes

I wouldn't worry about only having 4gb of ram. That plenty to run any DE just fine in my experience. I'm on this toaster right now and it's hard to push it past 3.2gb of usage no matter what I do. Pic related not even hitting 2gb in GNOME at the moment.

I'm currently having a problem setting up japanese input on Ubuntu Gnome 16.04.2.

I'm not able to find an option to select "Japanese (Mozc)" inside the Region & Language settings.

I've been able to do it easily on Ubuntu 16.04 on Unity but I'm having a difficult time doing it here on Gnome.

Anyone willing on giving me a hint or two on how to use Mozc on Gnome? I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm running Manjaro with XFCE.
I've installed some of MS core fonts (Time New Roman) to
/.local/share/fonts
and it worked fine.
However, FF started to display the web pages with different fonts than it's used to be as well as the fonts in system started to render differently.
All stopped as soon as I deleted the added fonts.

How do I install fonts to be used by specific application without affecting others?

I'm gonna reformat (mklabel) one whole hard drive, but there is one partition in it that I need for later. How do I back it up?
Does
dd if=/dev/sda2 of='/mnt/backup/sda2.img' bs=4M status=progress

If so, what is the resulting file type, and how do I use it?

The only difference is the Desktop environment.

Xubuntu is Ubuntu with Xfce4 on top

Kubuntu is Ubuntu with KDE Plasma on top

Ubuntu GNOME is Ubuntu with GNOME Shell on top

Then it should do, though a TARBALL would be faster since dd would copy the "empty space" as well.
IMG would be just a large file, not different from a large superhottenticalechinesecartoon.avi
As for how to restore the img
run
dd of=/dev/sdax if='/mnt/backup/sda2.img' bs=4M status=progress

Be careful though with dd.
>>
>>59347860
I can also mount it, right?
# mount -t loop -o uid=1000,gid=1000,ro /mnt/backup/sda2.img /mnt/sda2
>>
>>59347899
Yes.
Though a TARBALL would do the same.
Why do you need it in that way instead of simply copying it?
>>
>>59347899
I meant
mount -t ext4 -o loop,uid=1000,gid=1000,ro /mnt/backup/sda2.img /mnt/sda2
>>
>>59347920
I need it that way exactly because I can mount it, and access its files as if they were on the filesystem, unlike a tarball, which I have to extract.
Plus, that partition was ~95% full, so not a lot of empty space is wasted, and it wasn't very big, only 30GiB.
>>
>>59342186
New thread when?
>>
>>59347723
Okay you're on Manjaro and I'm on Arch so this should work exactly the same for you as it does me.

I'm using freetype2 but with a configuration file to make it look nice. The file is located at
/etc/fonts/local.conf
you might have to make it if it doesn't already exist. And this is what my local.conf (just a text document) contains http://pastebin.com/tNF0M2Fh

Or you could just install infinality fonts (google it) but that's what I was using about a month ago and a harfbuzz update conflicted with it and fucked it up so I had to move to freetype (infinality isn't in the main repos so it's my fault)

Hopefully that's helpful.

Anyways pic related is what my freetype config looks like.
