Hello /mkg/ britbonger here.

What are my options when it comes to ISO UK layout Topre boards? Am I basically limited to realforce or are there any other alternatives.

Cheers
>>
>>58604449
There are only three topre brands out there. Realforce, Type Heaven, and Leopold. Cooler Master did have topre keyboards, but those were all discontinued

I have a Rosewill RK-9000 with Cherry MX Blue Switches, the usb slot is acting up, don't know what to upgrade to. The cherry blue switches are ok, they have a bit of a click, tension is just right, I'm looking for of a slightly more pronounced click response. I'm looking into a Ducky One TKL RGB keyboard, which would fit what I'm looking. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Saying that MX Reds feel like Topre is like saying that fish tastes kind of like steak.

Topre feels like a really good and consistient membrane keyboard. It's comparable to older membrane keyboards except that it's lighter and the key registers half-way down. The feeling isn't guaranteed to wow you in the same way that an MX switch might. Best way I can describe the feeling is "pleasant and unintrusive".

its the capacitive sensors that are the most expensive part. Topre switches were never designed for consumers, but rather for industrial applications since they were some of the most durable keyboards out there. It wasn't until the late 90s did Topre start selling their switches for consumer keyboards

If you can spare the extra cash I'd still get the essentials for the very nice USB cable (braided, gold connectors, etc) and then get some genuine Cherry PCB stabs from a different retailer.

Have you considered getting a fully programmable board, setting caps lock to something like F24 with caps on the Fn layer, then binding push to talk to F24? A rubber dome has a conductive nipple underneath it that needs to make contact with a membrane, hence why you should be calling it a membrane and not a rubber dome as the rubber is just a part of the actuation. It'd be like calling a cherry MX switch a "spring" switch, you're just naming a single part of a system when you should be addressing the system as a whole. With Topre there is no nipple, but a capacitive spring that is always in contact with a board. Topre is considered mechanical due to the requirement that the spring that causes the change in capacitance must be compressed. A rubber dome (or membrane as it's correctly called) has no physical change to cause an actuation. Membranes have to simply touch each other to actuate and this is not dependent on the rubber domes. Again Topre uses the spring to actuate and not the rubber domes (or cup rubber as the officials like to call it) so calling them rubber domes when the domes itself don't do any of the actuation is absurd.

First of all, there exist two types of rubber dome switches, neither of which work as you described in the first part of your post.

The typical rubber dome switch that you come across in most modern keyboards uses two membrane sheets which are separated by a sheet of plastic which has cutouts for the membrane contacts. When you bottom out on the rubber dome, a small rubber nipple presses the two membrane sheets together.

A variant you typically find in older rubber dome keyboards is the rubber dome with the conductive pad. These domes have a conductive pad that presses down on a second pad which is on a PCB. Technically, you could have NKRO like you do on regular mechanical keyboards with these.

Furthermore, rubber dome =/= membrane

Topre does indeed not rely on physical contact when it comes to the actuation, but saying that topre is a rubber dome with a spring is not incorrect in the slightest. It's fairly accurate actually.
Referring to topre as a rubber dome is omitting some information as to how it works, but I'd argue that this still is valid since the rubber dome is what gives the switch almost all of it's weight and tactile feel.
>>
My favourite part of this whole rubberdome argument is that it will never not get a reaction from triggered Topre fans. You can make it as obvious as possible that you're just baiting and you'll still get a response.
>>
Its kinda funny how cherry MX, buckling spring over membrane, and Topre all came out in 1985, yet here we are almost 30 years later and nothing has changed.

bolt mod it and swap your flippers around and create your own layout.
>>
>>58619778
depends, which way do you want to go?

>>58619898
thats a thing you can do?
im gonna bolt mod one of the ISO ones i got cheap when i get the kit i need to gut it, but if thats viable i might bolt mod my SSK too
>>
>>58619934
Definitely possible. Under the plastic stabilizer inserts is a contact point, if you put the flippers in the right place and mount a spring on it you have a functional key that is usually already detected. ISO and ANSI Model M's use identical membrane sheets.
>>
Cheapest 75% keyboard?
>>
why do you people hate tenkeys
>>
>>58620008
That's my preferred layout though.
>>
>>58619954
ill look into that, this SSK is already crisp af, so probably worth a bit more than the average SSK, i imagine if i bolt and ISO mod it i should basically have the most desirable possible model m config shy of an industrial one

>>
>>58620023
Yeh with the exception of an industrial and a displaywrite ssk, that'd be pretty desirable to me. Do you have the original box for it? That seems to drive the price up right to the £400+ range.
>>
>>58620066
sadly no, i dont
i kind of overpaid on this one slightly, but i had to get one for myself, and given just how much more crisp it feels than my 1994 lexmark model m id say i didnt do too bad all in all
>>
>>58619934
Definitely don't want to go much smaller. I use the ten keys on my noppoo a lot. I don't really care about the switches as long as they arent reds or blues.

HHKB Pro 2 looks nice but I'm not sure

hi i have no idea what i'm doing so go easy on me

>Budget
preferably <150 USD but can go over if its worth it

>Location (continent at least)
north america

>Preferred switch type
haven't quite deided yet, something clicky that's between a brown and blue in terms of volume would be nice, maybe clear or white, idk. i've tried a few at microcenter but haven't gotten a super good idea of whats going on

>Layout
full, tenkey and everything

>Form factor
ansi

>Backlight
might be nice to have if it's somehow configurable, at least a on/off toggle

>Previous/current keyboards
currently a wyse 901716-06L that i like a lot, pic related

Thanks

I mainly listen to electronic music, though I wouldn't know what genre it fits in. I like slow comfy experimental music.
Other than that, folk rock, rammstein, etc. Depends on what I feel like.

Given the amount of anons who have no idea how to answer this, I think we should change the template. Maybe something like:

>clicky/tactile/linear?
>weight? (light/medium/heavy)
>>
>>58620272
yeah, i do too. "i want something with both physical and audible feedback that's not too loud" is a lot easier
>>
>>58620113
let me rephrase, what switch do you have now, and what do you want from your next keyboard?
>>
>>58620272
That's pointless. People can figure that out themselves by looking at a chart like the one that's in one of the pastebins. If someone says they want a light clicky switch for example, they could just instead look at the chart and say Blue.

Need some opinions on my first keyboard building project.

I realized I am too much of a fuckup and I won't make a great first keyboard. So, I want to make a keyboard as cheaply as possible.

>shitty cheap switches
>shitty PCB
>shitty caps

I don't care, it's experience.

Any ideas on where to get those three things? I'll probably make my own case in wood or 3d printed plastic.

I'm guessing Outemu or Kailh switches, if there isn't a cheaper solution, but I have no idea about the other 2.
>>
>>58620387
>People can figure that out themselves by looking at a chart like the one that's in one of the pastebins.
Except they don't. Not to mention that those charts don't usually cover non-cherry switches.
>>
>>58620417
I forgot to add, I want the keyboard to be as small as possible while still having arrow keys.
>>
>>58620417
techkeys for gaterons
aliexpress for keycaps
banggood for the GH60 PCB

There are also kits on ebay that include everything but the keycaps for 100 bucks
>>
>>58620426
>Except they don't.
So why enable them? A lot of people come here looking to be spoonfed, just don't do it and let they do their own research instead. There's plenty of information on the OP for that. Those are the same kinds of people who then come back here later complaining that mechanical keyboards are shit because they made a bad uninformed choice.

I'm not saying the pastebins can't and shouldn't have more added to them, quite the contrary, but I think the buying template is pretty thorough as long as people actually use it properly.
>>
>>58620482
>for 100 bucks

That's too much.

The switches should be about 15€ at most. I have no idea about the PCB, but could a pcb and a keyset cost about 80€? I'm really reaching for the shittiest materials here.
>>
>>58620417
let's split is super cheap for a pcb diy keyboard, gaterons are cheap enough and good, so if you don't fuck up too bad you will have fun with it.
>>
>>58620513
The 100 buck kits have an anodized aluminum metal plate and a plastic case as well as either cherry or gateron switches. The PCB comes pre soldered and is fully programmable.

If you really want to cheap out you can get a gh60 plate for 15 bucks some gateron switches for 20, some resistors for $2 and then you handwire the whole thing to an arduino
>>
>>58620579
I want to solder too, part of the experience.

How much is the arduino/teensy? I'm looking at prices around 15$ after a brief search.

That would make

>plate - 15
>switches - 20
>resistors - 2
>teesny - 15

>total - 52

Not bad. I think I could still cheap out on the switches, though. Also, keycaps are a bitch, too expensive.
>>
>>58620640
You can get cheapo pad printed keycaps bucks on elitekeyboards
>>
>>58620640
the cheapest keycaps are the ones you salvage from used boards. just make sure they are pbt.
>>
>>58620708
>>58620686

I no caps I can salvage.

I can see pbt sets on aliexpress for as low as 9€. Seems like a good deal.
Also forgot to say, I'm from Europe so I will refrain from ordering from the USA
>>
>>58620640
Get a used cash register for like 20 bucks that way everything is already done for you, then cut it up and turn it into whatever layout you want, or desolder the cherry switches and use them and the keycaps
>>
>>58620749
>europe
can't you get stuff like http://www.ebay.de/itm/Tastatur-Konvolut-7x-Cherry-G80-1851LPMDE-gebraucht-G80-1800-Keyboard-MX-Black-/192084845060?hash=item2cb9262204:g:7fgAAOSwjDZYhLt3
