Post your component list, rate other anons', and ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

Assemble your parts list; built-in price comparisons by vendor and a compatibility filter.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Kaby Lake has been released! Skylake is depreciated if corresponding chips are similarly priced (i.e., i5 7600K vs i5 6600K)!
>Some Z series motherboards will have a one-click, 5GHz on air OC button that works for 80% of i5 7600Ks
>Z series chipsets have an "Enhanced Turbo" under XMP, which allows all cores to run at the highest single core boost clockspeed (works for Skylake CPUs as well)
>Pentiums now have hyperthreading, and are thus the new default budget / entry level gaming CPUs
>Pentium G4560 is the best price / perf four thread CPU on a modern platform
>All Kaby Lake CPUs work natively with 2400MHz DDR4 memory
>Do not underestimate the impact of fast (>2400, 3000MHz is price/perf champ) RAM in conjunction with a Z series chipset, which often provides as much of a performance boost as a moderate CPU overclock

I need help with this Kaby lake build. I'm skeptical about the board and case that I chose. Zero reviews out for z270 boards, and I suspect I'm overpaying for features I don't need.

I intend to OC, so I want a board with a decent bios that will give me some OC headroom. I also want a case with good airflow, easy to clean, and dust filters. The case I picked seems to have poor airflow when the filters are in, and no filter on the side panel so dust is still going to get in despite the filters.

Any ideas on how to fix my build? Also I have a 1TB hard drive already, should I add an SSD?

>wanting a poorly-placed M.2 port with only PCIe2.0 4x maximum
You're in lucky, PCIe-to-M.2 adapters not only allow you to mount a heatsink and keep them away from the hottest part of your motherboard (under the graphics card), but they're guaranteed to be faster than native M.2 ports on nearly all LGA1150 motherboards.

How can I improve this build without going over 880 dollars?
>>
>>58553471
No, it's only Windows 7 and it will install, just not without some workarounds. It's probably best to install something like a Type-1 Hypervisor and run Windows 7 as a bare metal VM.
>>
>>58553460
You could get a well reviewed Z170 and flash the BIOS with the Kaby Lake update if you don't need the extra PCIe lanes.

>>58553494
Might want a smaller case

>>58553516
Can you link me? I'll delete that post if so
>>
>>58553494
You could potentially:

>Drop down to 8gb RAM

>Remove WD HHD
>Drop down to i3

Up to you though
>>
>>58553460
>should I add an SSD?
Yes
>>
>>58553554
Intel only said that Kaby Lake and onwards wouldn't support Windows 7, which means that there will be no firmware updates or the like if anything goes wrong with the install or operating system in general. It does NOT mean that you can't simply install the system and hope for the best.
Which is why it's probably better to install Windows 7 as a Type-1 Hypervisor, since the operating system will rely on the virtualization "operating system" and its drivers in order to use resources. Plus, if anything goes wrong with Windows (which is guaranteed), you can always start from a "clean slate" within minutes with a copy of the original VM's image kept on a separate drive.

Can you guys help me pick out a monitor?

I have the ubiquitous ASUS VG248 1080p/144Hz 24" now which I'm totally happy with for daily use and PC gaming (5820k/380x CF). Ideally I'd like to pick up a second, larger display to be used as a spare screen for controller based PC games/emulation and maybe a PS4 Pro down the road since I might like to check out some of the console exclusives. Ideally it would be 27" or slightly larger and 16:9.

High refresh rate isn't a priority for this screen, I think I'd be fine with 60 Hz given what it's intended use is. Any problems with a PS4 trying to upscale from 1080p to 1440p? When will 4K HDR monitors show up? Q2? Worth waiting for? Any suggestions? Thanks senpai.

i need some wise eyes on this. buying parts over the next few months to put together, gonna buy the motherboard on sunday

build 1. kaby lake, z270, modern. has a big m.2 for the aesthetics, plus a white/blue finish

build 2. skylake, z170, still relevant. has a small m.2 for boot and an SSD for all the rest. red/black finish to make it interesting

i already own the case, but it's holding an old AMD phenom II/660ti build and i'd like to experience some modern gaming and a modern pc experience.

so,
-kaby lake or skylake?
-1070 in SLI or single 1080?
-m.2 to boot and SSD, or m.2 for all storage?
-i'm going to be overclocking, air cooler or liquid? i can fit a top-tier radiator in this case with 140mm fans

i'll be gaming in 1440p, and i'd like to see 70-80fps on max settings in multi-player FPS' like R6siege and BF1

Help me /g/. I need an m.2 SSD. This SSD will be used solely as game install space. I install a good 50% of my library at all times as I don't like waiting for the game to re-download. I currently have a Samsung 120GB 840 series for OS, Samsung 250GB 850 EVO for Linux, Samsung 500GB 850 EVO for game installs.

I'm looking to make the 500GB workspace for when I edit video. Should I keep the Samsung streak going and just get a Samsung NVME m.2? If so which one? 950 pro or 960 EVO?

Are the Intel 600p drives good? Anyone have one? I know in synthetic benches, the Samsung drives are top dog. But in real world, would I even feel that?

Last option was a 1.2TB intel 750 series but they're sold out everywhere and where they're not, they're all stupid over priced.

Go with Kaby lake. The chips have been seeing higher overclocks than Skylake. Plus Kaby seems to handle the higher clocked RAM much better.

If you have the money, always go for a larger m.2. M.2 booting vs SATA is a waste of money. If you're going to buy an m.2 SSD, go for the largest one you can afford. You can always add less expensive SATA based SSDs in the future.

As for 1070 SLI vs 1080, if you're only gaming at 1440p, get a single 1070. No really. I have a 6700k and 980 TI build and max everything at 1440p. When running 1440p, you only need max x4 AA compared to x6/x8 at 1080p because of the higher pixel density. Take the money you're saving and shove it onto a larger m.2 SSD or bump that i5 to an i7. Many games, especially games like R6 and the new BF love moar coars. Not uncommon for me to see load across all 8 threads on my 6700k. My buddy even sees properly distributed threads on his older i7-990X build.

Lastly, as for air vs AiO liquid, always Air cooling IMO. I'm running pic related. Cooling my 4.4ghz bumped 6700k and I see 67C at absolute maxe when encoding video for 8+ hours at a clip. A good air cooler will last you forever. Worst that can happen is the fan dies and you have to dust occasionally. AiO always runs the risk of the pump dying, or the unit outright leaking. Broken? Hope you have 6 weeks to play phone tag for the warranty and/or $110 more for another unit.

Just my 2 cents.

>>58555323
That's what came in my Fractal R5. I could remove the bottom 3, but why? My entire build is almost entirely quiet, air flow is no problem. Case doesn't have a window, and there is sound dampening foam all over the place. Removing the cage would only make me lose it when I need it.

I intend to make something akin to pic related. Make my entire main build nothing but SSDs and mitx. Just haven't had time to really sit down an plot out an Mitx gaming build. Plus I'm waiting on 10TB disks to come down so I can buy 4, throw them in RAID 10 with a dedicated SAS controller.

>TL;DR
Because why not and I can
>>
>>58553710
If you're willing to spend a bit, corsair cases are lovely. Fractal design cases are solid, and phanteks cases are amazing.
>>
>>58555385
I'm willing to spend around 100-120. I want to spend towards quality I don't care if it looks nice I am 100% function over form. If it has great air flow, easy to clean, and filters, and fits all my parts, I am happy.

Do you recommend anything specific from those brands you mentioned?
>>
>>58555400
I'm currently using a 600c. Gorgeous case, tons of space (really too much), very easy cable routing, super minimalist and lovely looking. Only two problems, and that's that it only has 2 3.5 bays. (HDD) The front filter also requires taking off the front panel, which is pretty easy to get at.

What I did is I got a 5.25 (cd) bay converter and used it to install my extra harddrives. It does, however, have 3 laptop hdd/ssd bays.

The phanteks enthoo evolv cases are super sexy and lovely, in both function and form.

However, if you just want functionality, any of the fractal design cases are solid. As long as you don't go NZXT or for some of the more awful thermalitke/coolermaster cases you're fine. (NZXT because all their cases feel cheap)
>>
>>58555190
Buy the cheapest one. At those speeds, you won't really notice the difference in loading times.
But what you could do is use the 960 EVO as a workspace drive and keep the 850 EVO for games. It has higher endurance rating and you will notice the difference in speed. Again, you only gain about a second less loading time over the 850 EVO which really doesn't fucking matter for online games since you still have to wait for everyone else to load their session. The 950 PRO is slower than the 960 EVO until the 960 runs out of cache. Then it drops to just over the 850 EVO's peak write speeds. Consider the 950 PRO over the 960 EVO if sustained sequential write speeds are essential.
I'm about to retire my 950 PRO myself, I've gotten nearly 100TB of writes on it due to it working as both a direct record drive and a cache for editing large video files.

I got a few questions.
1. Is it OK to choose Skylake CPU over Kaby Lake if KL pricing is significantly higher? As far as I can tell, performance-wise it's not much of a difference.
2. Will KL CPU work with Z170 motherboard and is it possible to BCLK-overclock non K Kaby?
3. What is the best cooler for moderately overclocked SL/KL within 25-35 USD price range?
>>
>>58555928
Honestly wanting to run the hardware at default settings isn't that unreasonable. Heck the 7600 turbos only 100mhz lower than what I keep my 6600k at. A 7600 plus a cheap board and the free Intel cooler is considerably cheaper than 6600k, z170 board, and at least $22usd for a decent cooler.

>>
>>58555980
1. Kaby is slightly better, but if you havent upgraded in a while and dont mind spending $20 more on a better cpu, go with Kaby.
2. Kaby will work with Z170 after the Bios is updated. The Catch is that you will need a Skylake CPU to install the Bios update. After that, Kaby will work.
2.5. "BCLK-overclock non K Kaby", i dont know, but i dont see why not.
3. Hyper 212 seems to be a standard for most builds. Toms Hardware has a bunch of charts comparing Air Coolers.
>>
>>58555980
1: go for it. Same ipc just higher clocks. A 6500 will last for years.
2: it works but you need a BIOS update first. Can't update BIOS without a CPU. If you have a friend has a Skylake cpu, you can use that to update it, just pay for some thermal paste for them. Bclk no idea.
3. Cryorig h7 easily.

Now I got a really strange question.
Let's say I want to overclock non K skylake and I can get 6600 (not K one) slightly cheaper than 6500, should I go for it? Is there some advantages?

Change ATX case for a mATX case, some might be cheaper, but I would recommend looking at Define mini C, would only cost up to 10 more, but since you chose mATX board, why not mATX case too

Oh it's stable. I'm just a pussy about temps even though i know it's fine well above 70s. I only have a 1080p/ 60hz monitor. If any game I play sees a bottleneck I'll be extremely surprised. Even GTA V gets 60 fps smooth. Why push the clock speeds when my performance needs are met?

What are the better AMD GPU manufacturers ? Never owned an AMD card, but now I will probably buy 480 or 470, no idea what manufacturer to take, I've seen people talk about XFX but that one doesn't stock here, so what other good ones are ?
Also how much more powerful is 480 8gb against 470 8gb ?

Don't do this, because the parts will likely have become cheaper at the end of the two month period. But if you're having trouble coughing up the money, some things are ridiculous, like the 1TB SSD or suggesting a 1080.

The Kaby Lake build is on the right track, but honestly the 1TB SSD is overkill.. 480GB + 2x 2TB HDDs in RAID, and then you'll have fault tolerance as well as higher speed.

If you're considering 1070 SLI, just buy the EVGA 1080 and use the step up program to get the 1080Ti

I was saying that in general, CPU temp isn't a problem unless it throttles.
My video game load temp (gtav) is like 60 flat. Much less in the vast majority of others. The only time i ever see 70c is aida64, and that's only the peak of core0. Average is around 66 or 67.
>>
>>58556611
Windows 7 in a VM, right? How much of a hit does the gfx perf take?
>>
>>58556450
Don't ever buy a 470 -8gb please. You will hit 100% gpu useage wayyyy before you approach 4gb vram. 480-4gb is the 1080p value sweet spot. The 8gb mayyyy come into play at 1440p with ultra textures but the 480 isn't the strongest in 1440p, so you run into that same problem again.

To your actual question, Msi gaming X card is awesome. Mine stays low temps in every 1080p game. I heard that the asus ROG and Dual ones are pretty good but check reviews.
Sapphire is a great company and usually the best AMD board partner, but their rx 480 this time around runs rather hot and/or loud. Not sure about the 470. Again, reviews.
Whatever you do, don't get a reference cooler or a gigabyte 480. Thermal throttling out the ass.
>>
>>58556669
Like barely any dent. It's not only a VM, it's a VM where you pass the graphics card through the host into the VM so the hardware is available for use. Where you might see problems is the CPU, this is where more cores is better. A hexacore would be perfect for this.
>>
>>58556739
Okay, so I can rule out 470
Now since I have a 1440p monitor I'm looking at 480 8gb, since it seems a better choice(and cheaper) than 1060 6gb and higher tier GPU are out of my price range
>>
>>58556450
The cards are about 15% different at stock, but you can OC the 470 to stock 480 performance

Some boards have issues with Windows 7 and some are incompatible to Linux, so if you want a Linux system, you should have checked compatibility first.

I'm not gonna go past 1080p for a while so I was thinking on one hand a 480 could be a bit overkill, but it could also serve as futureproofing in a way if I decide to build a better rig sometime down the line. Just pop it out of this old one and slot it in the new one.

I thought the reference cards were like the plain jane ones made by AMD or Nvidia themselves, no?
Maybe I have it all mixed up. Either way, 480 Sapphire ones all appear to be Nitro or Nitro+ from what I'm seeing.

I see this with 470s though. Top one is reference and bottom isn't? Makes sense the bottom one would be cooler, having another fan and all.
>>
>>58561727
If you stay at 1080p the 480 is slightly overkill. Sure you can reuse it later on, but if you don't plan on buying a new Pc for another 3-4 years a RX470 will offer value because you're likely to get a new GPU by then anyways.
Reference design cards have a shitty, loud ass cooler on it, unless you require such a design it's better to buy aftermarket models.

Seems simple enough. I'll try to go for a 470 to test the waters, and since it's a bit more economic it should be easier to do since I'm on a budget.
Will probably have to change the PSU as well. It's some chink brick that I couldn't even find info about anywhere. PowerStar brand or some shit, I don't even remember and I'm too lazy to open the case to check. I'm actually surprised it hasn't exploded in the 5 years I've had this rig.

470 and 480 are about 15% different at stock. Both are good 1080p cards. Definitely get an aftermarket card because you get a binned chip (better overclocking especially with the 470).

Depends on the games, but the 480 is really not a 1440p card, and buy the time you upgrade it definitely won't be

As a new builder, it's frustrating that all of these sites recommend mid-tower cases. After doing some research, I decided on a MasterPro5 (modular potential out the ass) and now that it's full, I realize I could have saved $50 and gone ITX. If you have no desire to run multiple GPUs and don't need more than two HDD slots, there's no point in a mid-tower case other than....well...nothing.

you need a special utility as MOBO manufacturers made a "deal" to only support Win10 for skylake. But most manufacturers provide a utility to create a Win7 bootable ISO to circumvent that.

For example, MSI has:
https://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/support/techfaqdetail.aspx?formid=3350
>>
>>58563131
scratch that, Intel made the deal by not including EHCI (which Win7 needs) in the Z170 chipset. So you use the tool to circumvent that requirement.

Hey guys is there a way to see if my GPU is broke or if it was my motherboard not being able to handle it?

It's kind of fucked up. I have a shitty prebuilt Dell XPS 8300 from the year 2012. I tried to put in a MSI RX470 but for some reason it wouldn't work. I can get my 560ti to work but not the rx470, like theres no picture at all but I still can hear the rx470 fans spinning.

I'm ordering a new motherboard and other items to make my own build but I want to know if the rx470 is broken or my computer is too shit to run it.

Any help would be appreciated because if I can't find out I will have to take the rx470 to a shop to see if it works which will cost me about 50$ and the fucking serial number got scratched somehow so the warranty no longer is good(even though I got it a month ago)

10 bucks you haven't connected the power cable or your PSU doesn't supply the needed power.

In reality it's not so much a build from the ground up but rather upgrading the parts that show the most age right now (i.e. shit GPU and shit fire hazard PSU, CPU is showing age but it can still serve for some time to my judgement).
When the money gets better I'll work on building one from scratch and use those two parts as a sort of kickstart to not begin from zero, or at the very least sell them to have a little more flexibility to buy better ones.

Initially the question was if the mobo was compatible with a Sapphire 480, but it led into the PSU probably not being able to keep up and melt or explode, whichever happened first.

I might go for a 750w G3 to not have to worry about overloading it (I'm not sure on this though, if 650w would already be enough, but I keep thinking of reusing it and the extra wattage could come in handy later), and still a Sapphire 480 to top it off and see if it runs.
Even if it's slightly overkill for 1080p I'd rather have it overperforming and limit framerates over dropping frames under 60.
>>
>>58564020
Could 750w really come in handy later?
"Later", things will probably not be twice as power hungry and "later", SLI won't exist
650W could handle any 220W CPU and any 300W GPU easily, I doubt you're getting more power hungry stuff than a 9350 and Titan XP
>>
>>58564020
RX 480 and 470 are fine in your situation, 480 is overkill and could be bottlenecked. For the PSU 650W is all you need.
16GB RAM is also more than enough, no idea about the mobo, definitely get a 120/240GB SSD and consider adding 1-2 fans if t's the stock case.
What about the CPU cooler, is it also stock? Consider changing it to something like a Cryorig C7 or M9i.

>>58564172
I've had the intention of getting more storage, yeah. It's been getting to the point where I actually have to delete garbage to make way for new garbage.
The case is a cheapy black box, one exhaust on the side for the CPU fan and a couple grills on the back with nothing really on them. No dust filters, no fancy stuff.
No extra cooling, just the stock Intel CPU fan and GPU fan. So far over the years it hasn't melted and usually doesn't get terribly hot. Maybe around 70C when I play heavy-ish games? I know the cooler it is the better, so I'll consider getting a decent fan if I can as well. Those two you mention look alright.

In all honesty it makes more sense to start a build from zero, but I want to try my hand switching some components around first before getting into a complete build cause I'm a bitch like that.
>>
>>58564483
Cooler is better but skylake really isn't that hot, even overclocked a fair amount, the new cooler is more for having less noise than lower temps
>>
>>58564483
Get a SSD regardless, it will make your PC fly and 120/240GB entry level SSDs are not expensive.
>one exhaust on the side for the CPU fan and a couple grills on the back with nothing really on them
Can you mount a fan at the front? Negative air preassure is not optimal.
70°C is ok, but far from good, especially since you don't OC.

>In all honesty it makes more sense to start a build from zero

>>

Nah the front is all covered up. The only thing I could think of is the plaques under the disc drive that detach to make space for more drives and shit, but they're just solid pieces of plastic now and I have the impression taking them off would do more bad than good.
If there were grill-like pieces I guess that could open it up, but with such a generic case I doubt those exist.

I don't think your OC results are that unreasonable then. You might just have a chip that performs great at a very low voltage. Combine that with your cooler and a good job by you installing the cooler and it's not impossible.

The only thing that would throw it off would be if your idle temps were way too low. Idle temps can't be less than ambient if the reading is to be trusted. A 22 C reading at idle is suspciously low and probably grounds for assuming the sensor is off by a few degrees.

i can't say for sure it's actually 22c ambient since our heater doesnt show the actual temp (just what we have it set to). also the screenshot earlier this thread was when it wasn't OC'd. it would make sense that the sensor is a bit off but I wanna believe

It's not like I'm looking to spend more, just would be willing to if it were the right display. I'd go up to 32" if it seemed like a nice panel.

I'm not getting WQHD and I'm not getting a 1080p panel that's larger than the 24" one that I already have, so it's going to be around $400 for a decent display. Not sure why you'd say $500 is "insane."
>>
>>58567010

you're insane because if you're gonna spend that money you should be looking at high end tv's in the lower sizes instead of overpriced 'monitors' that only go up to sizes where tv's begin.

you're literally gonna pay more for less.

for 500 bucks you can find a 4k tv that's ips and hdr. do your homework. it's not like you're going 144 hz or variable refresh rate. /g/ thinks tv's are stupid but that's because they're ignorant as fuck and running linux ons a 1440x900 18 inch monitor.
>>
>>58562203
KVM, Xen, VMware. Your only real losses are the shared cpu usage and ram. (also address lookaside, but I don't think that's appreciable)
>>
>>58567142
The absolute best 4k tv's have around 20-30ms input lag. Some of the ones with better picture and all of the HDR bells and whistles are up around 50-70ms or even worse. Completely unacceptable to me. That would piss me off much more than being limited to 60 Hz or being "limited" to a 32" display that I'm sitting a few feet away from.

It's OK. Get 2400MHz RAM since you're getting Kaby Lake.

I have 2400mhz rated ram, but when I overclocked my cpu it set it to 2666mhz. Now my motherboard has the ram light on, indicated a problem, but I haven't experienced any problems. My system is stable in 20 minutes of aida64 and unigine heaven. Should I just ignore it?

I want a new gpu but I think I'm set for a while, thoughts?
>>
Is a Radeon 7870 GHz edition still relevant? Have a client I built for 5 years ago. Got him an fx-6300/Radeon 7870 build for under $450. He said on certain games, (see 99% of them) the PC seems to be struggling just to give 60fps on medium settings.

Now I'm thinking the weak CPU is the culprit. Have an i3-6100/H170/8GB ram setup for $210 lined up from microcenter.

>inb4 the new pentium

He wants this build as soon as possible. I don't think he cares about the 3% performance difference between the two.

If the 7870 isn't up to the task, what would be a better replacement? 4GB 1050TI or an Rx 470 4GB? Both are under $170.
>>
>>58568397
Took pictures with a 7 year old samsung m8.
>>
>>58568412
Completely depends on the game as to what his bottleneck is. That CPU is very weak for games that require heavy single threaded performance and that's just about all games these days. The GPU on the other hand can give workmanlike 1080p performance but he'd definitely need to be turning down some settings to do that, and that still may not be enough on some newer GPU intense titles.

Honestly if he has the $170 to spend now on a new GPU while you're putting the other one together he should spring for the 470.
>>
>>58568457
Yea that's what I figured. I mean games like battlefield run decent because of the proper multi threading, but other than that, it's a stutter fest. so the i3-6100 would be a good enough step up yea?

And I know the 7870 is still a fighter. It's only real problem is it's lack of VRAM. Only 2gb.

So you'd vouch for the rx470 over a 4GB 1050TI? Any particular reason? Or is it just that much better? I stopped even acknowledging GPU benches when I bought my 980 TI.
>>
>>58568595
The 470 is a better all-rounder at that price. The 1050 Ti will probably edge it out in some heavily Nvidia favored titles but the 470 will beat it overall and seeing as how long your client kept his 7870 I think he'll be better off sticking with an AMD card that should age pretty well.

As for the i3 being good enough, I think as long as he isn't big on recording gameplay or thinking about streaming it should be fine. Only a handful of games out there get a big boost from having more than 4 threads currently. I think he'll be really happy with the improvement if he's a 1080p/60fps kind of guy and doesn't mind making sacrifices where required. The bump in performance from what he's got currently is probably worth what he's spending depending on how much you charge him for the labor.
>>
Someone make a new thread.
>>
>>58568653
Ah I'll probably charge him a measly $30-$40 for labor. His PC is built, just swapping a few things and installing windows 10. And yea, that Radeon lasted him quite some time. The rx470 should as well.

His son does the gaming. Maybe I'll let his son talk him up to a 7600k/z270/rx480 build.
