Is it worthwhile building a home server on an opteron 4365 EE CPU? I can get a Mobo+CPU for $120. 8 cores, cheap ecc ram under 40W for that money seems nice.

When I turn on my PC, my fans spin up for like a second before the whole thing shuts down again. Now, it only does this when I plug it into a new socket each time, otherwise it just straight up refuses to power on.

Im all for overclocking but the 6600k is designed to be overclocked, meaning an blck-overclocked 6400 won't match a multiplier-overclocked 6600k. But that's still a good option and a good deal to Z170 a 6400.

When does DDR4 become wortg it at what.bandwidtg and at what CAS latencies?

3200mhz with 15CL seems to be the sweet spot. But I already have 3600mhz with 16CL DDR3.

The main advantage of ddr4 is that it can be clocked insanely high at normal voltages; ddr3 at 2400mhz is actually better than ddr4 at 2400mhz, the difference is that 4266mhz ddr4 actually exists and ddr3 tops out, even with extra voltage, long before that point
The "sweet spot" refers to the fastest ram you can find at a good price, not necessarily performance between ddr3 and ddr4
Basically is just get the fastest ram that you're comfortable with paying for, lower CAS is better but latency should be an afterthought once you've chosen your frequency, since increasing frequency quickly accumulates way more performance than lowering latency

if your 4GB of ram is single channel and you want to add an 8gb stick, don't. If it's 2x4GB that you want to add, it should be fine as long as they're the same frequency. But if it's a single stick of 4GB and you want to add a single stick of 8GB, just replace it with the 8 entirely.

The ref 470s are underclocked and overvolted at stock, so you can get a fairly large overclock to 1340MHz on the binned chips. 290 is a bad purchase

The plug on your mobo looks compatible with router antennas. I need to continue to refine/update the builds, but those builds are still great. One thing I might change is the Z170 boards to Z270 in some of the non-OC builds (better boost tech, "Enhanced Turbo", or some shit, which allows all cores to boost to the maximum single core boost). I've been running an FX-8350 for a little over 4 years, and I'm finally looking to upgrade.

Western Digital will likely fail within 3 years. HGST drives are generally what you want if you need a 3.5" HDD.

First time builder here, did i make any c critical mistakes or is this list fine?

Budget: Around 1100€, the parts in the image combined already cost 1100€ (so please don't advise me to get more expensive parts without reducing the cost elsewhere)

For the last couple of days there has been times where my second monitor has begun flickering a little. Not going completely black, but just fluctuating between brighter and dimmer light.

Now, I turn it on, it displays the correct image for 1 second, then it just goes black. It's claiming to get a signal, but it's just black.

I have a 290x + 6700k.

I need a new monitor. I want 144hz for overwatch and dota, I can run those games above 144 I believe so I dont think I need freesync for that. However I still also want to play GTA which runs at like 80 frames but dips below 60 in some are and the witcher which plays at 50 and dips sometimes. Should I get a freesync 144hz monitor to smooth this out? I'm sort of confused with refresh rate and when tearing happens so that's why I'm asking.

I plan to get a new monitor soon for when I move into a fema trailer in the next few days cuz flood. My build is a 1070, 6600k setup so I had wanted to get 144hz and 1440p to take advantage of it. But I also have a ps4 that I got a bit after the flood to have something to play during my free time while waiting on insurance money and I'd like to be able to play that on whatever monitor I get. Looking things up it seems ps4 looks ass on 1440 displays, can anyone confirm that?

Just bought a freesync 144hz viewsonic monitor with LESS THAN 1MS RESPONSE TIME.

Is this true or is it a marketing meme?

I'm new to this, so sorry if it sounds like a stupid question.
I put all the computer parts I've already ordered or planning to order into a psu calculator site, and it said that I'll use 290-360V, and so the PSU it recommends it either a 500V or a 550V.

My brother built his own computer already, but is using a 1000V because... reasons, I guess. It's won't be too much more powerful than mine, checking the specs.

You don't need more power if you're not using more, right? Or am I missing something?
I know upgrading is a thing but even then switching cpus and gpus in the calculator didn't show much of an increase in power requirements.

No, you don't. Oversized PSUs are just an old meme. People buy them "in case they decide to go for SLI/Crossfire" but they never upgrade to two-card setups. Also a 550W PSU is probably more efficient since you're closer to the 40-70% spot where the effiency curve is at its highest.

think about it this way, replacing the cpu doesn't really change the power draw. Going from a 6700k to a 7700k for example changes nothing. If anything, upgrading components can reduce how much power your system uses. Adding components does however. So if for whatever reason you decide to add a shitload of HDD or whatever, then you might need more wattage. 500w will most likely be way more than enough.

Depends on the games. 480 can handle the vast majority of relased titles at 1440p 60FPS. But you're not going to get that framerate on most new AAA games without seriously lowering quality settings.

You can set the res lower for gaming if you need the extra 1440p real estate for work. Depends on monitor size as to how good the downscaling will look.

I am a poorfag and I'm currently debating what to do. I have an old VGA monitor lying around and could use it for productivity as a second screen when I'm programming, but plugging it in would involve removing my current GTX 750Ti, and reinstalling my old GTX 460, as the 750 has one DVI, one DP, and one HDMI, whereas the other card has two DVI and I have a VGA-DVI adapter laying around. My file server is using way too much CPU during normal file transfers or copies between SATA drives. Add that on top of the regular disk usage over the network and my server is struggling to get anything done with normal speeds.

Anyone got advice on an office workstation PC build? I'm a graduate student (not in computer science) and my advisor said he would subsidize me if it was a reasonable amount (under 650 for the tower). I have two Dell U2515H's from the department, so just need to power those.

So I got my case and I'm trying to install the motherboard, but the standoffs they give me don't quite match the screws, but the pre built bump standoffs do, what should I do to alleviate this problem, I could put the screws in the 4 other slots and not worry too much about those standoffs, as long as they are installed.

You have to install Win7 by disk if you're using Skylake or inject USB drivers into the img if you're trying to install by USB

Should I overclock my GPU for games? I have MSI R9 290 with Arctic Accelero Xtreme IV and with profiles that I've set it never reaches 155 Fahrenheit or 70 Celsius.

My CPU is i7-2600 with Asrock H61-DE/S3, so I guess I cannot overclock that. Am I Right?

Yes. You might be able to pick up an i7 3770 for cheap in a few months, which would be a slight upgrade and a lot cooler.

alright so changed a few things, researched prices better and got this. I decided to hold off the SSD for now as I don't really need storage. Thankfully I know people in Canada and the USA so I can take advantage of some better deals there.

Fucking finally, although given my past experience with all velco tiedowns, those things will not hold the test of time. All of mine have either gotten so caked with dust that the fabric doesn't catch on the hooks very well or gotten brittle due to age and stretching. I wish more cases would use magnetic clamps.
