Post your component list, rate other anons', ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, and your country if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

>Assemble your parts list with price comparisons by vendor and compatibility filter.

General Tips:
>Consider an i5 instead of an i7 if you are not a content creator
>Consider stock fan+heatsink for any i3 or locked i5 build
>Consider a H110 or B150 mobo for any i3 build
>Always consider an SSD (240GB ist recommended) for your build

>>
>>58531804
Unfortunately, you can't overclock the 6400.

So your best bet is to go with a used 6600K(The -K denotes that the processor is unlocked for overclocking with Z170 chipset motherboards.)
>>
>>58531966
You literally can. That motherboard has a bios that lets you change BLCK on any skylake chip.
>>
Is it worthwhile building a home server on an opteron 4365 EE CPU? I can get a Mobo+CPU for $120. 8 cores, cheap ecc ram under 40W for that money seems nice.

I want to experiment with containers, especially Docker, and VM networking.

Dumb question coming through, choo choo

When I turn on my PC, my fans spin up for like a second before the whole thing shuts down again. Now, it only does this when I plug it into a new socket each time, otherwise it just straight up refuses to power on.

Is my PSU dead? All I did was move my rig from one place to another. I've tried swapping RAM, and it didn't do anything.

>>
Any recommendations on a text reading and writing monitor(s)? I read a lot of articles and write a lot of papers. I can go up to 1000 USD, but a little over is fine. I'd prefer to have two.
>>
>>58531804
Im all for overclocking but the 6600k is designed to be overclocked, meaning an blck-overclocked 6400 won't match a multiplier-overclocked 6600k. But that's still a good option and a good deal to Z170 a 6400.
The 290x... I mean that's 470-tier performance, it'll be perfect for 1080p but not for too long
>>
>>58533526
Looks bretty good. Can probably get cheaper ram with same specs.
>>
>>58533716
Yeah when I added that set it was cheaper. Didn't notice till now

DDR4.

When does DDR4 become wortg it at what.bandwidtg and at what CAS latencies?

3200mhz with 15CL seems to be the sweet spot. But I already have 3600mhz with 16CL DDR3.

What's the math and where's the math comparing the two?
>>
>>58531804
Get 3000MHz RAM
Get 240GB SSD
Get RX 470 rather than 290. Same perf, but the 470 has a LOT of advantages

>>58533472
Yup, seems like PSU. Could be that another component has shorted. Strip the PC down to the basics

>>58533526
Shitty monitor

>>58533694
Consider an ultrawide instead of two monitors
>>
>>58533785
Frequency divided by the CAS latency gives a rough approximation of relative performance
The main advantage of ddr4 is that it can be clocked insanely high at normal voltages; ddr3 at 2400mhz is actually better than ddr4 at 2400mhz, the difference is that 4266mhz ddr4 actually exists and ddr3 tops out, even with extra voltage, long before that point
The "sweet spot" refers to the fastest ram you can find at a good price, not necessarily performance between ddr3 and ddr4
Basically is just get the fastest ram that you're comfortable with paying for, lower CAS is better but latency should be an afterthought once you've chosen your frequency, since increasing frequency quickly accumulates way more performance than lowering latency
>>
>>58533785
>>58533835
So no, I doubt new ram performance gains would even be testable, let alone noticable, let alone worth it
>>
>>58533833
How is it shitty
It's only 254
It's 1444p
It's an IPs panel
1 ms response time.
The only thing that could be improved is the frequency response but a 144hz panel with the same specs would be around 500 dollar.
Not looking to argue, just genuinely curious about better options in the same price range.

I'm going to be upgrading RAM soon. Should I keep the pre existing 4gb and add 8gb, or remove the 4gb entirely and replace it with the 8gb?
>>
>>58533898
It's actually 4ms pixel response time, don't ever say an IPS monitor has that fast of pixel response, at the moment that's impossible
Also I think that's a good monitor for the price
>>
>>58533940
Yeah sorry I was looking at the wrong spec sheet
>>
>>58533920
if your 4GB of ram is single channel and you want to add an 8gb stick, don't. If it's 2x4GB that you want to add, it should be fine as long as they're the same frequency. But if it's a single stick of 4GB and you want to add a single stick of 8GB, just replace it with the 8 entirely.

>>

You need adaptive sync (freesync/gsync depending on gfx card) and a high refresh rate. You're probably the same guy from the last thread, but if you're too poor for a nice 1440p monitor, you're too poor for 1440p.

Doubt it, pic related.

The ref 470s are underclocked and overvolted at stock, so you can get a fairly large overclock to 1340MHz on the binned chips. 290 is a bad purchase

I need to continue to refine/update the builds, but those builds are still great. One thing I might change is the Z170 boards to Z270 in some of the non-OC builds (better boost tech, "Enhanced Turbo", or some shit, which allows all cores to boost to the maximum single core boost). I need to figure out if Enhance Boost/Turbo works on both mobo chipsets as long as the Z170 has been flashed with a new BIOS update.

>So, in the case of the Core i5 7600K we're reviewing here, base and turbo clocks receive a significant uplift - run the chip on a Z170 or Z270 board, hit the XMP button in the BIOS and you'll have a processor running at 4.2GHz on all four cores with zero effort required. 'Enhanced Turbo' is part and parcel of XMP memory overclocking on all enthusiast boards these days.

According to the article,
>anything higher than 2133MHz frequencies are not possible on existing Skylake-based motherboards. Kaby Lake introduces support for 2400MHz DDR4, which should extent to lower-end boards. So not only will we see a frequency boost to the processor itself, but the chip should produce better gaming performance if paired with faster memory.

I'm new to this, so sorry if it sounds like a stupid question.
I put all the computer parts I've already ordered or planning to order into a psu calculator site, and it said that I'll use 290-360V, and so the PSU it recommends it either a 500V or a 550V.

My brother built his own computer already, but is using a 1000V because... reasons, I guess. It's won't be too much more powerful than mine, checking the specs.

You don't need more power if you're not using more, right? Or am I missing something?
I know upgrading is a thing but even then switching cpus and gpus in the calculator didn't show much of an increase in power requirements.

What did you mean this?

I've had it since 2015 with no issues, are they known to explode or something?
>>
>>58546051
your computer will only use the power it needs, not the power the psu can supply. So it's always better to have more breathing room just in case you plan to expand. I also remember hearing that they also handle better than smaller psus because they're not taxed as much but that sounds like bullshit.

But long post short, wattage doesn't matter as long as it's rated above your needs (500w is way more than enough). What does matter is that you get a quality psu that has a good reputation and quality components. The bronze/silver/gold/etc rating matters more.
>>
>>58546249
Shitty cheap PSU's are unreliable. It probably wont start a housefire but don't expect it to last longer than 5 years.

>>58544593
>cheap and simple solution
Buy one fan and put it on the spot at front
>expensive and complicated solution
Buy a case with better airflow design, and get a tower-style CPU cooler + couple of noctua meme fans while you're at it.

>>58546051
>You don't need more power if you're not using more, right? Or am I missing something?
No, you don't. Oversized PSUs are just an old meme. People buy them "in case they decide to go for SLI/Crossfire" but they never upgrade to two-card setups. Also a 550W PSU is probably more efficient since you're closer to the 40-70% spot where the effiency curve is at its highest.
>>
>>58546347
>>58546369
Alright, thank you. Even if I expand the cpu it should still be fine, and I have no intention of crossfiring or anything, so this should be good.
Thanks.

I'll buy an extra fan or two just because as well.
>>
>>58546469
think about it this way, replacing the cpu doesn't really change the power draw. Going from a 6700k to a 7700k for example changes nothing. If anything, upgrading components can reduce how much power your system uses. Adding components does however. So if for whatever reason you decide to add a shitload of HDD or whatever, then you might need more wattage. 500w will most likely be way more than enough.

Depends on the games. 480 can handle the vast majority of relased titles at 1440p 60FPS. But you're not going to get that framerate on most new AAA games without seriously lowering quality settings.

You can set the res lower for gaming if you need the extra 1440p real estate for work. Depends on monitor size as to how good the downscaling will look.

I think a build based on the 4C/8T version of Zen should be possible, maybe they will also release a 2C/4T version, who knows. Imho you should wait until after the release.
The thing with Vishera builds is that they are based on a soon to be dead platform and are worse in single threaded applications such as most older games than modern Pentium or i3 CPUs.

kek, I've got mine for just under $270, and that's when supplies were limited

Anon, there is no shortage in the UK. Brand new they are £300, I got mine for £235.

And we pay 20% tax so £46 of £235 is tax.

Burgercoins don't directly convert to bongs. Plus the pound is down against the dollar. Usually it is around £1.4 to the dollar, it is currently £1.2 to the dollar.

If I add another graphics card of the same exact type to my system, that allows for more monitors correct?

Just want to be sure as i'm doubting myself and feel retarded.
>>
Quick windows question.

I've been using pirated version all my life, but then 'upgraded' for free when 10 was free.

Can I somehow carry this over to a new pc, or do I need to start cracking again?
>>
>>58549387
Yes. But you can run 2 monitors off one card as long as it is powerfull enough to run them both.

Doesn't your current single GPU have enough ports to run multiple monitors or do you already run 4 monitors from one GPU ?

I am a poorfag and I'm currently debating what to do. I have an old VGA monitor lying around and could use it for productivity as a second screen when I'm programming, but plugging it in would involve removing my current GTX 750Ti, and reinstalling my old GTX 460, as the 750 has one DVI, one DP, and one HDMI, whereas the other card has two DVI and I have a VGA-DVI adapter laying around. Should I take the gaming performance hit for productivity, or should I deal with the loss in productivity for those sweet, sweet polygons?
>>
>>58549869
My file server is using way too much CPU during normal file transfers or copies between SATA drives. Add that on top of the regular disk usage over the network and my server is struggling to get anything done with normal speeds.
Either I need to find a way to offload the CPU's work onto an external SATA controller of sorts (if they exist), or I need to find an alternate means to copy/transfer files, even if it means I have to switch to a different file system (using NFS for compatibility)

Sounds like you've got a really old server or there's some other problem. Post specs of the server and a screen of the CPU usage. Are you running it headless?

No screenshots for reasons, but it's an Atom C2750 on a Supermicro motherboard and CPU usage routinely hits 99% during file transfers from one logical drive to another. Transfer speeds does its thing where it maxes out the hard drive's peak speeds, slows down to about 80% of the peak speed, then drops to ~40MB/s for the rest of the transfer/copy.
Yes, it's a headless server running Windows Server 2008.

Do I need gsync to get 144hz out of a 1440 monitor with a 1070 if the only comp game I'll be playing is overwatch? Most other games I play are RPGs or single player so I don't mind dips there

There's a few IPS 1440 144hz monitors far cheaper than the gsync versions
>>
>>58550427
The point of gsync is that you're not getting 144fps, and that's okay
>>
>>58550427
So those monitors have ULMB? I would get a gsync monitor just for the ULMB
Also I doubt you're getting 1440p144fps maxed on overwatch, gsync might be useful there
IPS is the meme here, that's what's driving the price up, gsync adds money but at these resolutions and especially these refresh rates, IPS costs more than gsync

To me there's no reason to spend money on 1440p if you're don't want to pay for adaptive sync. If you're looking for a cheaper setup, Vega + 1440p Freesync will be far cheaper than 1070 + 1440p Gsync

Anyone got advice on an office workstation PC build? I'm a graduate student (not in computer science) and my advisor said he would subsidize me if it was a reasonable amount (under 650 for the tower). I have two Dell U2515H's from the department, so just need to power those.

I'll be using Word, Excel, PP, Outlook, LaTeX, SciPy, Matplotlib, R, Carl Ziess AxioVision Imaging Software, ImageJ, RasMol, ChemDraw, SAS/STAT, SeqPup, and Photoshop for sure. I just had to do a mind dump of the software that I've used in the past. I'll have to use Win7, but I'll probably have a drive for linux also.

I've read something about buying older xeons on ebay and using those in builds, but I'm not really sure what kind, or if that's good to do.

Anyway, here is what I came up with so far (pic related).

>Not sure if I should do 16 GB ram vs 8 GB ram
>Graphics card needed to drive both monitors smoothly?
>Need the build to be quiet, since in a shared lab space and some people flip out if it gets loud

2MB, 2340x2819px
So I got my case and I'm trying to install the motherboard, but the standoffs they give me don't quite match the screws, but the pre built bump standoffs do, what should I do to alleviate this problem, I could put the screws in the 4 other slots and not worry too much about those standoffs, as long as they are installed.

Link to PCP you filthy negro.

>Not sure if I should do 16 GB ram vs 8 GB ram
8GB for office, 16GB for workstation, although i don't see what workstation you're going to use in a simple office.
From what i'm readin 8GB should be fine, but if he pays anyways and if some money is left then why the fuck not use the money.

>Graphics card needed to drive both monitors smoothly?
No, if it's for work only and you don't do any CAD, graphical whatever buying a GPU is wasted money.
Same here, i'd say no GPU is fine, invest that money into the CPU.

>Need the build to be quiet, since in a shared lab space and some people flip out if it gets loud
Silent case, fans and aftermarket CPU cooler it is.

Also what about keyboards and mouse? The Dell trash we use at work makes me want to puke over it.
>>
>>58552024
