President Trump Edition

Post your component list, rate other anons', and ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

Assemble your parts list; built-in price comparisons by vendor and a compatibility filter.

>To activate the Description, select build from sidebar then click on the title over the parts list
>Description contains notes, other options, and build skeleton for easy customization / cost savings
>WARNING: Motherboards with Intel's 100 series chipset (B150, Z170, etc) will require a BIOS flash to support the new Kaby Lake CPUs!
>Note: Win7 and 8.1 cannot be installed on a Kaby Lake system

Have a budget, but don't know where to start? This will recommend you a parts list based on price.

>OUTDATED CPU RECOMMENDATIONS (no mention of Kaby Lake)
>Consider substituting an i5 7500 for an i3 in any RX470/480 or GTX 1060 tier build
>Consider stock fan+heatsink for any i3 or locked i5 build without a Z mobo
>Consider a B150/B250 or H110/H210 mobo for any i3 build
>Add a 240GB SSD to the "Great" tier build

What is with /g/'s refusal to buy windows? I make decent money and was able to justify the $130 for a copy of 64-bit windows 10 pro. It was a one time purchase for a system I will use extensively every day. For everything ranging from work, to school, to gaming. After spending almost $1600 on a PC, why not just buy a copy? You never have to worry about updates fucking your crack/Daz loader settings up.

I mean if your build is worth like $500, then yea spending almost 1/4 of your budget on Windows is a kick in the dick. But many of the systems ITT don't meet that criteria. I'm not a MS advocate by any means as I've been using a borrowed copy of Windows 7 with removeWAT since SP1 released because I was broke. Just curious.

Don't listen to the other anon. The 4790k is still a valid chip. I would recommend a 16GB kit of ddr3. See if you can get 2400mhz stuff. If not, just standard 1600mhz is fine. Shop around in ebay. My buddy scored a 32GB kit (4x8GB) of ddr3-2133 MHz on eBay for $80.

Maybe another SSD for game installs? Minimum 500GB. Crucial MX300 525GB is usually around $140.

If your budget allows, sell the 970, get a 1070. The 1070 is almost close to a 980TI in performance with 2GB more VRAM.
>>
Should I buy cnps10x optima or hyper 212 evo? I know 212 run a little bit cooler but that plastic fan brackets looks extremely flimsy.
>>
I'm from El Salvador and a friend of mine will travel to the USA between July and August to get me a few parts for my new PC, budget is near $1.4k and I came with this:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pPHN2R

What my friend is going to help me get with are the motherboard and both video cards, since rx480/gtx1060 are worth around $400 here and motherboards with more than 1 PCI are worth near $200, everything else is just a couple of bucks more expensive.

I need opinions and how I can improve budget and performance wise.
>>
Bigger SSD and a 1070 like other anon said, 4790k is better than skyshit in some things.
>>
>>58571206
Definitely don't get crossfire 480s. CF always sucks.
Get the i5 7500 or even consider the i5 7600K, since overclocking seems to be easy on the Z270
You can't use that fast RAM at full speed unless you have a Z270

By the time July rolls around, AMD will have released more powerful cards than the 480, no need for CF. AMD will have released new CPUs as well, so you should come back and check current builds then

Why the fuck you running 333Mhz DDR? Fucking get 400MHz shit. Just double up to 16GB and call it a day.

I run a 4790K, and there is ZERO reason to upgrade right now. You will see shit tier performance gains moving up to anything else. Wait for Intel's next step at the end of the year and see what they have to offer.

I have dual GTX 970 right now. I'm holding out to see how the new AMD Vega looks. Else, maybe I'll cop a used GTX 1080 for a good price. I run a 42" LG IPS 60hz display, so upgrading my GPU is a bit more of a concern.

I don't know how it got this far.

It was just going to get the i5 and a 1050ti so my anime body pillow could play too but I found the 390x for $165 and the 2k display for $50 locally and it snowballed.

I would've specced a better cpu if I had known this is where I was gonna end up. Still might sell it and switch.

Oh well it was pretty cheap and I'll have a decent second comp.

Still needs a cpu cooler. It will be getting clocked to 4ghz with a 39x multi and a 103 bclk if its stable.
>>
>>58571871
That's how most of my "small upgrades" have gone as well.

How many sata ports do I need on PSU if I plan on having like 4 harddrives?

do the harddrives plug directly into the psu, or do they connect to some kind of splitter wire.

the wire(s) will be hardwired to the psu unless its a modular design and have breakouts where you plug the stoarge drives in. you can also google psu sata cable.

A cheap quadro or a higher end GTX like a 1080, the GTX line has great OpenGL power despite not being quadros, AMDs newer FirePro cards I'm sure will be sufficient too
I mean small scale 2D rendering won't take any resources really, and *small scale* 3D doesn't ask for a lot either, your GPU shouldn't be the biggest baddest skyscraper-rendering powerhouse if you're just designing small hypothetical structures

How do you guys figure out what's a good CPU? I'm looking at pcpicker and I understand ones that require certain watts but then there are things that have i7 Core - (anywhere between) 4400-7700k or something, while other CPUs just have random edgy names attached to them.

It goes away when I fullscreen most games, and 1/10 times it's not even there. At 1440p with no scaling it's unnoticeable, and with scaling it's a mild inconvenience at best

>>
>>58581098
I'm going to get an i7 7700k.
>>
>>58581133
I wouldn't. For one, the 7700K doesn't support ECC RAM, which is more critical than you'd think for production VMs. Two, you also don't need the iGPU on the 7700K since the virtualization software takes care of that for you (plus, you'd be much better off running a discreet GPU in a PCIe pass-through). Three, Xeon E3s and E5s have lower TDP and overall power consumption than their i7 counterparts, which adds up over the years. Four, C232/236 motherboards (if you're going the LGA1151 route) features much better support for virtualization features as well as remote management for hardware if you're running a headless VM server. Five, those motherboards often last far longer under high temperatures for extended periods of time over consumer chipsets and boards since they're tested far more thoroughly for performance consistency and durability. Same goes for the Xeon E3/E5 CPUs themselves.
Six, you can overclock a $280 E3-1230 v5 to the same clock frequency as a 7700K stock with an ASRock C232 motherboard that has an external clock generator (it's this board >>58576160)

I'm swaying off Sapphire because of 2 year warranty and from what graphs I've seen, it seems to run the hottest, but also it's really a lot cheaper than the other 2 cards
How big of a difference does PCB have ? MSI seems best for the "best cooling & noise" but you said mediocre PCB
I guess the question I want answered is ASUS or MSI, since their cost differs only in 10 euros
ASUS has 3 fans, but if they're smaller than the 2 on MSI, they would run louder, if I understand correctly
>>
The lower right screw on the motherboard standoff for my microatx motherboard won't go in, and I made sure I had the right screw. I already put together the computer, (posted here like three days ago about this) and it seems fine, but is it really good without that screw? A couple of the other screws became kinda loose in the standoffs too, but I figure that the graphics card being screwed into the case provides enough force along with the other screws to keep the motherboard in place.
>>
>>58586861
For a normal user virtually none. This is only relevant if you want to OC, do note that the MSI does not have dual BIOS.
Onlly cards to really avoid are Gigabyte and PowerColor.
If cool & quiet is your main concern then MSI is what you want. Asus also has some interesting cooling issues, nothing alarming, though.

So MSI should be cooler and quieter than ASUS even though ASUS comes with 3 fans ? and what is dual BIOS used for ? Don't plan to OC if that matters

MSI is fine, both Asus and MSI are, basically your choice.
Asus also hase some nice features like additional PWM connectors for case fans, it's a meme but ok.

not him, but how would the xfx one be worse ?

also, regarding 1060 vs 480 what is better ?
>>
>>58588354
Yeah I've seen those, but the fans that came with case are 3pin so I won't have use for the connectors on the GPU, it's a tough choice, but I think I'll go with MSI, since it's a bit cheaper and seems that the fans are top notch on it
>>58588379
Didn't talk about XFX at all, since they don't stock here, but I've also heard it's a solid choice
Also, not sure, but I think with the recent updates 480 got maybe a bit better than 1060, also proper dx12 and vulkan support, so 480 is a safer choice if you don't change GPUs every month
>>

It depends really, if everything goes perfect and DX12 and Vulkan take over (and developers actually use it correctly) Then the FX.

Started looking at parts a month ago and I didn't know what I was doing. After ~20 different drafts I landed on this.

CPU: Precessor was originally 6100 but then kaby "half price i3" lake was released
MOBO: B150 -> B250
GPU: Have always played games on the work oriented family computer then later on work oriented laptops. So this card will be a massive upgrade towards gaming from my laptop that runs Borderlands 1 at 800x600 resolution on minimum settings 12-20fps.
HDD: Better value over the 1TB drives and I'm sure 3 is even more overkill for my needs.

Will most likely opt for linux over Windows to try it out. Suggestions and bully pls

a few things

the R4 is big case, probably the biggest mid-tower you can buy. i'd recommend looking into ITX cases which are smaller, and less expensive.

also, the power supply you picked isn't modular, which means that the cables are installed in it permanently. this is cheaper but if you look into modular power supplies, they're easier to work with. here's a picture of one.

also you can buy motherboards that already have wifi installed, and you can find them cheaper than that motherboard plus the wifi adapter. but really it's better to hardine your pc to the router. it cuts out the middleman and you don't have to worry about interference, plus faster internet.

and with the i5 6500. it's a locked CPU so that means it can't/shouldn't be overclocked. with the Zxxx motherboards, the Z refers to the ability to overclock CPUs. you can save some money with an H170 motherboard that doesn't give the ability to overclock but saves cash.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Z789yf

so check that out, you have the same CPU, but a smaller form factor, built-in WIFI, and you have a better GPU.

>>
>>58590443
Generally speaking, you want a unidirectional air flow in your case, going from a filtered intake to an unfiltered vent. The problem with all cases is that there isn't enough direct rear fan mounts to even out the number of intake fans, on top of the airflow-dividing areas around the RAM, CPU cooler, and GPU/PCIe cards. Therefore, the best airflow in almost any case (barring a thin ITX or a rackmountable chassis) is from the front-bottom intake to the rear-top exhaust.
>>
>>58591031

don't fall for the gsync meme

That's not how bottlenecking works, that CPU will be able to fully run 2 980tis easily. Even leaving "bottlenecking" behind because it doesn't mean what you think it means, that CPU will be able to keep up with new games easily. It wouldn't hurt getting a 6700k but that's because games are starting to use extra threads, not because he has 980ti in SLI. The 980ti practically matches the 1070 in benchmarks, to the point where you can literally estimate that they're the same card. There's nothing wrong with that CPU and those gpus
Except that SLI is trash, on the maybe 15% of games that support it you'll get maybe a 30% boost in frames, on the other 85% of games one card will just be turned off. SLI is a fucking shitshow and is declining, don't fall for it (ESPECIALLY not with brand new cards)
I'd recommend a 1070 or 1080, for example CSGO could run 144fps/1440p on a 1070, but a doubt BF1 would even run that on a 1080 card
You're gonna have to sacrifice a setting or two but at that budget you could just get a 1080 and be down with it
Or buy Vega when it comes and and if it's a good price, it's supposed to be 1070/1080 tier performance
You don't need an watercooler at all but if you insist on getting one, 240mm watercooling is always better than 120mm
I'd just suggest an air cooler
>>

As far as I've been able to gather, non-k overclocking isn't possible with many lake chips. It's hard to get real info among all the misinformed bullshit posted online though.
>>

But people like this https://youtu.be/ng-pmHV-RMM are seeing a 20% improvement with 980s in SLI compared to a single 1080.

Now a person might say that it would be wiser to get a single 1080 and wait for SLI down the line, but at that point I'd just sell the 980s and trade up.

And the Enthoo doesn't have the best air cooling for overclocking, which is why I'd go with a great liquid cooler over an air cooler.

Only AMD mobos come with backplates as far as i know and all mobos include some basic stuff, usually SATA cables and shit.

Buy used and you can get an actually competent GPU

Nothing I could recommend personally, as I've said, I have Define Mini C, which doesn't have 5inch drive bays. Fractal Design is solid choice, their Arc series should probably have place for optical drives, but someone would probably recommend something that is better, it all depends on what you are looking for in a case

Probably should wait for another thread, but my friend's looking to build his first PC after his prebuild died.
He's not going to play PC vidya on it but he wants something that can run Final Fantasy 14 at max settings. Can't he go cheaper if that's the case? All he really does on the computer is web surf and draw.

Thanks for all the help, https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/mVygqk (Same build with the SSD and case fans added)

Planning on upgrading to i5 7500 and GTX 1070 after Kaby lake+ and Pascal+ come out at the end of summer.

Kid seagull I found dead and buried at sea for your troubles.

Time to stop posting, retard. If you had half a brain, you'd know that AMD doesn't have any competitive CPUs out right now and that Kaby Lake is slightly better than Skylake while being equally priced
>>
>>58592560
Try to save up for a 470. The 1050Ti is a prebuilt card/mobo powered, so you pay extra for the perf
Consider a 500W PSU because it will come with 2x 6+2Pin connectors
>>
>>58592811
If you had half a brain you wouldn't suggest Kaby Lake non K OC on Z270 mobos because that's only possible with Skylake.

It's not balancing the airflow, it's getting the airflow in a mostly uniform direction that's important. People who put a fuck ton of fans everywhere get worse temperature than people who put the right fans in the right places.
