VT-d + QEMU will show you the light
>>

Why? Recreational use:
>browsing YouTube
>Netflix / Amazon Video / anything streaming
>Spotify or music in general
>Gayming

So what exactly is the problem? Linux can do all these. There are even quite a lot AAA games available.
>>
How do you know what's specific to your OS?

I got a pi and put Raspian on it. Apparently its tweaked Debian, but when I followed Spotify's instructions to install it (they even mentioned the instructions being for Debian), it failed.

Obviously the underlying Linux commands and stuff are all the same.
It feels superficially similar to the netbook I put Ubuntu on (makes sense because Ubuntu is derived from Debian?)

But just how far do the similarities go? I was under the impression that all Debian packages should work since Raspian is Debian.
>>
>>58497113
Vim cilorschemes do not require explicit setting of colors but may instead say 'make this group color1' (where color1 is from your Xsettings/terminal).
Most good colorschemes don't however.
>>
>>58497359
All Debian packages should work on Raspbian but Raspbian is made to be lightweight so it doesn't come will all the libraries that Debian comes with.

I'm planning on installing gentoo on my new SSD, but it doesn't get here until Wednesday. What can I do right now to speed up the installation process later? Can I precompile the kernel in Arch and copy it to the gentoo installation?
>>
>>58497654
whateverctl is a naming scheme for any cli control application for something else, and systemd uses that convention so you have systemctl to manage daemons and journalctl to manage logs.
>>
>>58497654
>>58497772

I also assumed that ctl is shorthand for control, which kind of makes sense.

>system control

>machine control
>timedate control

It's consistent and I like it.
>>
>>58497766
You can install Gentoo into a chroot and then just copy it to the SSD later.

Kind of surprised something that easy doesn't occur to you by yourself and you have to ask, you must be kind of slow.

My recreational use is browsing the internet, listen to music, watch a movie every now and then, play roguelikes and play a few steam games that I like, which consists mostly of source games and indie games.
Is such a use case so hard to imagine that you can't see how someone would use Linux recreatively?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>Windows 7 SP1

>>
>>58498542
If you weren't dumb as a brick you'd know that FSF requirements for a "free distro" are fairly simple and straighforward.

There's only one rule
>no-non free software.
No exceptions.
>>
>>58498624
Debian is that and they still won't accept it.
>>
>>58498624
>>58498656
he forgot to mention that there can be no non-free software in the repos either. You can access non-free software in Debian even though it's free by default, so FSF can't approve it
>>
>>58498624
There's more. The documentation also shouldn't recommend nonfree software. Debian for example fails here.
>>
>>58498656
Debian has non-free repository.
Therefore, the one and only rule of "no non-free software" is not followsed.
>>
>>58498542
>>58498656
>>58498685
Why would one care what some arbitrary "foundation" declares what is right and wrong?
The kernel's still have firmware for closed source proprietary software to run the NB/SB/PCI/RAM/CPU controllers anyhow
>>
>>58498656
The only way they would accept it is if it would explode when you try to apt-get some non-free (as in freedom) stuff.
>>
>>58498712
>NB/SB/PCI/RAM/CPU
those are handled by the bios/uefi not the operating system.

debian out of the box comes with a deblobbed kernel with the possibility to install the required non-free firmware

My touchpad is really sensitive, so I've searched for a solution and I found this command

xinput set-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Synaptics Noise Cancellation" 25 25

The original numbers are 8 8. It really solves the problem but it always comes back to the original number when I turn the laptop off. What should I do to fix this?
>>
>>58498712
They're not declaring it right or wrong. They're simply giving you a list of distros that are purely free software
>>
>>58498712
this, why would someone want to gimp his system
>>
>>58498778
Put it in .xprofile.

.xprofile is supposed to run everytime X starts
>>
>>58498788
s/gimp/de-cuck/

Isn't is good to know that your distro comes completly without cuckware? FSF endures distros aren't "gimped", you can install what you want on them like on every other distro else. The "only free software" requirement is about the default state a free distro should be shipped to the user.

I have some problems with Booting fresh debian installation.

So, basically I shrinked my SSD to 2 different volumes, one contains Windows and the other one was supposed to hold my Debian installation, so I installed debian on that shrinked volume and was asked to overwrite my master boot record with grub(? dont remember), I pressed NO, then the new dialog comes up asking me to install GRUB loader somewhere. I installed it on USB drive hoping that I could boot my linux installation only when using this specific USB drive.

What I expected: Without USB I expected that Win10 will boot normally using his own bootloader (and it does) but when pendrive is plugged and booted from it, the message would pop up asking me to boot up linux or windows.

Result: Win10 boots normally indeed but if I boot that USB with GRUB it just gives "no operating system" message.

So now, I'm locked out from that system, how do I boot into it now? Also, how to make my distro to boot using a pendrive ?

You seem to have made a bit of a mis take in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Alright so I installed archlinux, I have a window tiling system (i3) and i downloaded chrome. But I'm a beginner, and now for the life of me I can't figure out how to launch chrome. Everything else was difficult, so there were tutorials, but this basic kinda thing there isn't a single guide for.
>>
>>58500033
i3 usually comes with dmenu
do Mod + d and then type chrome. Otherwise install dmenu.
>>
>>58499936

I didn't notice your WLAN comment and not having a wired connection. That kind of changes things.

Either way, yes, that's why you don't use shitty abstraction layers which are against the very core principle of Arch Linux. Spending your time troubleshooting something that no one but the guy who wrote that shitty script messed up, you could have spent that time installing Arch on your own.

What are you trying to use to connect? Install Network Manager and use nmtui, it's as easy as it gets with that. If you have an X environment you can also use the proper Network Manager GUI like the nm-applet.
>>

There isn't much differences. They all does the same thing, you can install the same software...
The differences is somehow the point of view of the distribution maintainers.
>what software are pre-installed on your base system
>which DE it's using by default (if any)
>how should it handle updates, upgrades...
A new user will only see the UI that differ. A more advanced users will start to think his distribution is superior because of his package manager or because some other stupid reason he heard of
>>
>>58499858
You need to install kernel with proprietary modules for your wifi card.
>>
>>58500033

Your window manager type has nothing to do with the way you launch programs.

>>58500050

It doesn't "usually" come with dmenu, because it's not related or created under the same roof as i3. Some distributions might suggest it during install, but Arch certainly doesn't install it automatically (even if it is in the optional packages).

Regardless of dmenu, how can someone be in a position to require an "advanced" window manager (a tiling one), but not know how to launch a program? Surely he knows how to open a terminal emulator. Because that's all he has to do to launch a program by typing its name in, since the executable should be placed inside his PATH as long as he's using a normal distribution and installs packages with a package manager.

I'm in a bit of a predicament /fglt/ and I wonder if you could help me out. I need a laptop for programming, mainly C and Python for college. Don't got the money right now, but I do have a cheap $200 lappy that I got 2 years ago that came with Win7. It was already straining itself with Win7 but now it really chokes with Win10.

I'm completely new to Linux but I heard that Mint is a good starting point OS that is not very resource intensive is that true and is it good for programming as well?

The number of packages doesn't make your computer "slower", retard. Stop filling up your harddrive with your Japanese cartoon porn then, because according to you it's slowing your computer down.

Hint: not every installed package runs in the background.

Mint is a derivative of Ubuntu. It uses a different desktop environment, and it does some other package management-related things.

There were some security concerns with Mint as-of last year, with how they managed their website and neglected to apply security patches from upstream. They're not usually recommended right now.

With regards to dev tools, it doesn't matter what distribution you pick. They'll all supply gcc & python, and you'll be interacting with them through a terminal.

Read again: only a minority of packages does that, idiot. Even then, autostarting installed packages is a stupid thing and the only distribution which does that as far as I know is Debian/Ubuntu. You can turn that off, so it's not an argument.

>It's also very inconvenient to have a bunch of packages you won't need installed on your system.
How is it inconvenient? It doesn't affect you, unless you have a hard drive from the 90s size-wise.

I have a thinkpad with a dying battery, and FreeBSD is really shit for that

Every distribution is the same, because you can install the same software on it.

Will there ever be truly free laptops that aren't from 2008?

Not knocking old Thinkpads, however it would be great not paying ~$700 for legacy hardware.
>>
>>58500787
It's just very cumbersome to have so many useless packages in the applications menu, it's a pain to remove them all.
>>
>>58500861

Only GUI programs appear in those menus. That's a very small minority compared to the number of packages installed.
>>
>>58500946
Mint has both problems, to many GUI programs and too many packages.
>>
>>58500857
Probably not.

Hardware manufacturers will pay through the nose to keep the user locked down.

There are effort to render IME and all similar technologies useless but all the security holes discovered by various enthusiasts that could be used to achieve it are patched within the next microcode update.

To make a modern x86-based machine free you have to invest a lot of time and resources to reverse engineer everything on it.
No company is interested in doing this because a) it brings no money b) you would get sued by OEM day one.
And enthusiasts do not have the combined time, money, resource and knowledge to do this.

In 2017 there is only 1 motherboard model that is considered truly free which is an ASUS D16 server motherboard with custom firmware that was reverse engineered by a group of autists.
But the most basic configuration with a single AMD Opteron CPU, 16G of Ram and some basic GPU you have to pay over 4 thousand dollars. For the same cost you get a full-blown prebuilt workstation from an OEM like dell with a modern xeon CPU, ecc memory and a workstation gpu.
The price of freedom is expensive. Too expensive.

At this point our only hope are RISC architectures (like ARM, Power9+, RISC-V etc gaining enough traction to replace the x86 architecture which is at the core of the problem)

That was very informative. Thank you.

I'm thinking of just buying a 2008 Thinkpad and installing Libreboot myself, however I surmise it will be quite complicated. Perhaps if I stumble upon $700, I'll shell it out to Ministry of Freedom. I hope better, affordable alternatives come out in the future. I'd be willing to pay 1.5x of what I'd pay for comparable propriety-locked system.
>>
>>58501152
Probably the easiest (and i assume the cheapest) way to get a stallkike approved computer would be getting an ASUS C201 which is an ARM based chromebook that uses a chinese Rockchip CPU which (surprise surprise) does not require proprietary firmware even in the default configuration.

The process of loading Libreboot on it it's fairly straightforward.

https://libreboot.org/docs/install/c201.html

I honestly think that their method of write protection (the screw in the motherboard that acts like a switch) is one of the most ingenious methods of making a device tamper-free without completely locking the device I've ever seen.

I would actually buy one If I had "money I had no use for" but unfortunately I'm eastern european.

You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. [ and ] shouldn't be beside anything ie, "[ $a -lt 50 ]"
In sh, use -lt, -gt for numbers and <, > for strings (in perl it's the other way around)
If doing multiple tests, do
[ $a -lt 80 ] && [ $a -ge 50 ]

For maximum autism, quote all variables unless you want word splitting. And quote what you want to echo.

I don't get how they made W7 incompatible with the new CPUs. Do they refuse to boot old OS? Doesn't that mean old linux distros won't run either? Do they just mean it isn't officially supported?

>Windows 7 was designed nearly 10 years ago before any x86/x64 SOCs existed. For Windows 7 to run on any modern silicon, device drivers and firmware need to emulate Windows 7’s expectations for interrupt processing, bus support, and power states, which is challenging for WiFi, graphics, security, and more. As partners make customizations to legacy device drivers, services, and firmware settings, customers are likely to see regressions with Windows 7 ongoing servicing

Basically, they turn CPUs into fucking SoCs? Fucking hell.

Anyone have any experience with Solus? How would it be for a daily driver?

Any of you dual boot? After two years of backlog, I'm incredibly tempted putting Windows on a small SSD. Does m$ still doesn't like it when there's an existing OS before installing? I remember fucking shit up two years ago. I can't GPU passthrough with my current hardware, but an eventual Zen build a few months after the release might fix that.
>>
>>58506158
well, it eats up 20Gigs on your hard drive that you can't get back when you try to install a better OS

it was really fucking with me when "sudo x" would return "no such command sudo". Thankfully it was an easy fix.
I have found that I am liking linux so much I wan to install it on my desktop computer which is just for gaymz now. But looking through steam and GOG linux libraries is blowing my mind.

Debian wasn't friendly for me at all and I moved to Ubuntu for a week. I came back and have been enjoying it for three years now. Debian Sid is pretty nice, but I've had it almost break on me once with an apt upgrade removing almost a GB of packages. Having THE debian based distro is very advantageous since Ubuntu is very popular.
On the games, the Linux game library is still lacking, but it has some nice titles. Wine isn't perfect either, but less demanding games run neatly on it if you wish to use it.

I used Majaro for about 2 mintues. After installing it, it would kernel panic and I couldn't find a solution, so I installed Antergos instead.

When I tried it out on a VM, it seemed like rolling release Ubuntu without the botnet. Probably decent if you have no idea what you're doing.

Ive been googling furiously and I have successfully setup Elysium WoW 1.12 in playonlinux, however I can't get sound to work.

I am not 100% sure what is going on but after lots of dicking with it I think the problem can be fixed by switching from alsa to pulseaudio but for some reason I can't do that.

I'm not really sure what is wrong but none of the forum solutions I have found match up to my problem and I was wondering if someone can help me figure out what I need to know to fix it or do it differently.

Also I am having gross graphics problems, but one thing at a time.

What's a pdf annotation program for linux that lets me add inline text annotations without a box around them?

I used okular but the box is un-resizable, and sometimes is smaller than the amount of text, so I have to click it to show the full annotation.

Pic related is the type of annotation I want, what PDF reader can do this in linux well? I used to use Foxit for this on windows.
