>What you call "freedom" certainly is a religion.
Let's investigate it futher.

Religion is a cultural system of behaviors and practices, world views, sacred texts, holy places, ethics, and societal organisation that relate humanity to what an anthropologist has called "an order of existence"
None of those apply to linux or fs.

> Different religions may or may not contain various elements, ranging from the "divine",[2] "sacred things",[3] "faith",[4] a "supernatural being or supernatural beings"[5] or "some sort of ultimacy and transcendence that will provide norms and power for the rest of life."[6]
Not applicable either.

Let's see another article, that is referenced at the beginning of the former.
>Philosophy (from Greek φιλοσοφία, philosophia, literally "love of wisdom"[1][2][3][4]) is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language.
That's more applicable.

Hello, noob here.

I'm ready to take the plunge from W10 to Linux.
I tried a live usb with Elementary and so far I like it, it sees my ntfs disks and the hardware works.

I have a question:
Will when installed it also be able to write to the existing ntfs data disks? (usenet, torrents).
I don't have the space to backup all my movies and music.
>>
>>58215445
Then what's an easy way of removing them both easily
>>
>>58215467
- remove orphaned packages on update
- leave program caches alone, they exists to make your shit faster
>>
>>58215460
It should, you may need to add the ntfs partitions to your fstab so you don't need to manually mount them.
>>
>>58215460
>Will when installed it also be able to write to the existing ntfs data disks?
Yes. it sues a module(driver) called ntfs-3g, comes by default with any distro.

>I don't have the space to backup all my movies and music.
I would recommend unplugging data disks during installation. Just for safety.
>>
>>58215496
There's 300mb of space that I can't account for and Firefox cache seems to be the only culprit so how do I get rid of that shit don't care if it's slow

>>

CentOS still has the 10 years updates.

>Isn't Debian stable as fuck too ?
Yes. But each version has a lifetime of about 2~3 years + 2 ~3 years of security updates.

Most servers I've used were debian or, more recently, ubuntu.
>>
>>58217082
>Why ? Isn't Debian more stable and viable ?
Ubuntu server is pretty stable, mainly the LTS version. The main vantage over debian is that new versions of software are made available and the old ones receive security updates.

For example lets suppose debian 8 was released with django 0.9. Unless there is a massive security update that can't be backported, it will end it's life with only the 0.9 version available, which will receive security updates.

On ubuntu you will have the 0.9 version always available with security updates, but they will also make 1.0, 1.10, etc available.

>Fedora server
That's a meme. They support each version for like 12 months and red hat OSs usually require a reinstall to update.
It's changing with they new package manager, dnf, but debian and ubuntu are still far superior for version upgrades.
>>
>>58217087

To make it simple, if you are going to use the same version of a software over a decade or if you develop your software against a stable API/ABI and won't make use of new features that may be released, then RHEL/CentOS.

Otherwise ubuntu/debian.
(If having the *option* to use newer software is important then ubuntu has advantage)

It's basically the same. The differences are mostly in the package manager and package nomenclature.

>In final we wan't to cancel a lot of shit and do it ourself on a server, and we still don't know what Linux we'll use and learn.
I recommend ubuntu then, it has more widely available documentation. Anything that woks on ubuntu will probably work on debian too.

Hey guys, i've been playing around with Ubuntu for some time (a few months). I have installed it along with windows on dual boot. Now i want to try learning Kali and thinking about triple booting it. Is there anything i said that is wrong? Is Kali as good as they say?
>>
>>58217666
Its a hardware key, it does not send it keycodes to the os, it is a level above so you can do special keycodes that only access outside
>>
>>58217684
>Is there anything i said that is wrong?
Yes.
> Is Kali as good as they say?
No. It's for script kiddies and won't teach you anything useful. If you want to be a l33t h4ck3r pick books on programming, operating systems, network and hardware.
>>
>>58217720
Why the hate? I actually wanted to try pen testing, and the best Linux based OS i found is Kali, closely followed by Parrot.
>>
>>58217684

>triple booting it
kali isnt really supposed to be used like that. rather install it on a usb or use it through a VM.
also, there is no >learning kali but learning its tools. it is more or less a collection of pen tools.

Kali is fine, but don't learn the tools
You can use the tools at beginning but you want to learn the workings and how to pentest where the tools stop, this requires a huge amount of reading, learning because there is lots too it ( networking,OS security, application security, programming, web applications, crypto, inner workings of the OS ) and alot more.
>>
>>58217765
It's not hate, I'm dead serious. It's for script kiddies. No one seriously uses it and you won't learn 'pentesting' with it.

Actually 'pentesting' is not a real thing, no one that works with security uses that word.

Some good books:
The C programming Language(not exactly for beginners)
Computer Systems a Programmers Perspective
Operating System Design and Implementation
Unix Network Programming vol I & ii
The TCP/IP Protocol, IBM Redbooks
The tutorial for Scapy

More related to security/malware but require knowledge of the above:

Practical Malware Analysis
Reversing - Secrets of reversing egineer
The Rootkit arsenal
The shellcoders handbook
The art of software security assessment

Some other good books:
The Art Of computer Programming
Artificial Intelligence a Modern Approach
Computer Organization and design

I've heard of but haven't read(both introductory)
How to Think like a computer scientist
Computer Science from bottom up

After you have a good notion of how things work, you can just search: software do to X and read the manual.

Note: I prefer to learn things by doing them, I'm not trying to scare you with a list of books os pass as a hacker l33t. There just are somethings you won't learn on tutorials.

Not much. All the software you need for email is available on all distros. New features, the few of them, are not deal breakers. Most of the time it will be just running updates and keeping track of stuff.
Use whatever you find more convenient.

>>58218112
Yeah, so the API/ABI for the library you are developing against changes out fo nowhere, everything stops working and you can't figure out why.
>>
>>58218122
My 2 cents:

- choose a topic
- install related programs on your current distro
- learn them
- choose a new topic

With installing Kali you have 1000000000000 tools and basically don't know where to start or what you want. IMHO pentesting distros make only sense if you're pentesting on a daily basis.
>>
>>58218138
Well, you aren't going to develop stuff for outdated other stuff, right?
>>
>>58218122
>Most of the good books you posted i have already read
Why are you asking about kali then?

> If not Kali, then which OS would be most preferable?
Any GNU+Linux that is well maintained, has good documentation is a good collection of packages.

Kali only has the last, which it inherited from debian.

Arch, fedora, *buntu and debian are good options, in no special order.

The best way is to learn a software at a time. For example, I want to sniff networks, I install and study wireshark. I want to make custom tcp/udp packages to test vulnerabilities in low level software, I install scapy or use netcat.

Good forums are kernelmode.info and tuts4you. Also subscribe to the development mailing list of software related to what you are studying, if low level networking openssl and the linuc network stack are good options.

Try adding the .local after the hostname.

To use it over the internet you will need to know what IP your modem currently has. You will need to setup port forwarding on the router and maybe on the mode.
You might want to use a service like no-ip.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. Publishers often refer to copying they don't approve of as “piracy.” In this way, they imply that it is ethically equivalent to attacking ships on the high seas, kidnapping and murdering the people on them. Based on such propaganda, they have procured laws in most of the world to forbid copying in most (or sometimes all) circumstances. (They are still pressuring to make these prohibitions more complete.)

If you don't believe that copying not approved by the publisher is just like kidnapping and murder, you might prefer not to use the word “piracy” to describe it. Neutral terms such as “unauthorized copying” (or “prohibited copying” for the situation where it is illegal) are available for use instead. Some of us might even prefer to use a positive term such as “sharing information with your neighbor.”

Xubuntu has better battery life than Ubuntu, and also uses less RAM
>>
>>58221460
Battery life isn't distro related, retard. It's related to how you use your computer.

I have a question related to distros that are hosted at sourceforge. I heard that it's bad because sf bundled crap into random software like GIMP. Now I've read that sf changed ownership, but does it also mean that sf stuff isn't cucked anymore?

Change of ownership is not relevant to it being (un)safe.

Just torrent, my man
>>
>>58221568
Always cut out the man in the middle, which means, not using sourceforge.
>>
>>58221597
which also means, not using github, AUR, PPAs, etc, right?
what a retard

some distros gzip their modules, so "*.ko" won't always work
also, you can use basename to strip off paths, which is probably faster than using sed
find /lib/modules/$(uname -r) -type f -name '*.ko*' -exec basename {} \; | sort
>>
>>58221661
Yes, and it belongs to >>>/r/ebbit where identity is welcome.
>>
>>58221670
Very nice. Thanks & saved.
>>
>>58221670
just compared, seems basename is slower
basename: real:0m4.549s user:0m0.100s sys:0m0.432s
sed: real:0m0.380s user:0m0.216s sys:0m0.028s
>>
>>58221750
come to think if it, sed is only run once, and has buffered input from the pipe
only considered avoiding regex, i guess find's "-exec" isn't that efficient

Actually, some 4channer committed a patch for GTK2, but GTK2 is frozen and most programs use GTK3.
