Hey pc builders, please help me build a new system, currently running off a computer built in 2011 which is still going okay, despite blue screens once a week.
Games I frequent include Overwatch, Rust, Rocket League and probably Fallout 4 amongst others as the Steam Winter Sale kicks in.

Current Specs include:
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6900 series (Sapphire)
Processor: Intel Core i& CPU 960 @3.20GHz (8CPUs)
Motherboard: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
RAM: 8GB

My friend build this one for me back in 2011 as I was quite computer illiterate, while I'm not the best now, I am a bit better. My budget is around $1000-1200 for a pure pc (no peripherals) and I live in Australia.

I assume at a base level I would want to get an i7 processor and at least 16GB of ram, however am unsure on the differences between running say two 2GB graphics cards or 1 4gb card. Am also quite clueless on the difference in motherboards.

Do NOT build a new PC right now, just wait for AMD to release their new CPU lineup, and hopefully intels prices will get cut and AMD will have something that's fresh as fuck on the market.

I have an msi rx 480 gaming x 4gb along with a i5 6400, and I'm getting abysmal fps in most modern games, it varies from 60-20 on recommended settings(usually high), and 1080p.
I get unstable fps on some older games also, I'm not sure what's wrong since my build should be fine for current games.

But i'm not shure about my graphics card. Gtx760 have hdmi 1.4 which can support only 4k@30hz. But unofficially it supports MST which make it output 4k@60hz. TV have HDMI 2.0a. Will it work on 60hz?

No idea about Keyboard/Mouse, but i don't really like that cheapo shit. The CM QTK is a good budget mechanical, with either red or blue (maybe other) switches.

how do I properly overclock my GPU
I've been bumping up the clock speeds and running heaven benchmark but I never see any artifacts or anything (at +150MHz now), I can just keep bumping it up (to the point where games will artifact red blobs, but not heaven)
And what do I do with memory clocks? I just arbitrarily bumped it up 300mhz because online said it would be fine
Am I looking for an error/artifact limit or am I expecting a temperature limit (hovers at 68° benching now) first?

6600 is a ripoff for a little more speed, go with 6500, works fine. 6600K is better because you can overclock on a Z170 Mobo.

H170 mobo, got a nice ATX case for cheap. Alternatively, you can go back to the micro-atx mobo you had, but it'll be out out of place due to the size difference.
470 is a bit slower than the 1060 3GB, but the 1060 3GB has 10% less shaders than the 1060. And since it's rarely under 199/200 bucks, the 470 is a better buy.
Cheap, but good case. I have the Core 1000, would buy again 10/10.

I suggest you take a look at the EVGA G3 650/750W. It's an excellent successor to the G2. What could be interesting for you is that it has the "eco" switch one the outside / rear of the PSU.

Had a PC built/put together today, pic related. The "Unknown" RAM is

I expected the new motherboard to need a clean install of windows/ubuntu because I read something about that on the internet, but I didn't. Good, no need to restore backups etc. afterwards, no need to install windows/ubuntu again.

I had to install a new ethernet driver. What other drivers do I need to install/remove/reinstall? And why does the RAM show up as @1069 MHz when it should be 3000 MHz (and in the bios/uefi it said 2200 MHz iirc). Finally, it recognizes my mouse/keyboard, but I mouse scroll doesn't work, and the speed settings are all fucked up (Even turning windows speed and mouse settings up to max, it's slower than it used to be). Checked. And yeah, just for comparison look how much better the hexacores have held up over time compared to the quad cores. It's worth it for like $200 more if you're the kind of person that doesn't care about always having the best of the best, but just wants a really solid PC to own for a long time.

I cringe every time I see someone pay for an extremely overpriced Z117 mobo with a 6700k when they could have had a 6800k with a sensible motherboard and enjoyed much better long term performance in exchange for like a 5% hit to single threaded performance in some shitty game for the next year.

This thing has a massive heatsink and it's virtually inaudible in all kinds of use.

After some thinking, I went for that one over the 6800k.
Basically because of the price difference. Got it 80€ cheaper.
But they're practically identical in performance.
If they're around the same price, naturally go for the newer 6800k.
Also apparently the 5820k overclocks a bit better with less heat.

Hey anons I'm building a pc out of hand me downs and a few bought parts and I've run into an issue. Whenever I hit the power button the the led light for the power lights up and the rest of the computer doesn't get power.
The power supply's fan jolts a little and then stops each time it's turned on again. I can't seem to turn it off unless I turn off the power supply

you can technically get windows 10 for free using the media creation kit (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/) by just not putting in a product key, but there's a watermark on your desktop and you can't directly personalize using the personalize tab. otherwise it's fully functional afaik.

there are also cheap product keys you can get to supplement the media creation kit and get an "official" form of windows, but they're normally OEM which means you usually can't get support from microsoft.

either way it's reccomended you don't shell out 100 dollars for the microsoft version.

Hey /g/, built a cheap computer for my stepbrother. Got everything assembled, plugged in, computer turns on, but I get no video out either from the video card or the onboard video, and I have no idea if the motherboard is POST'ing or not.

I don't believe it is, because the computer will "run" for about 10 seconds, turn off for 5, then turn back on. Rinse and repeat.

I'm going back to Micro Center tomorrow to get a case speaker (the cheap case I got doesn't have one), because I have a feeling that will tell me what's actually wrong. But before I make the drive over there, is there anything else that might be immediately causing it? Tried booting up with no RAM, video card removed, no SSD devices plugged in.

Building my first PC for audio production and light gaming
Budget is ~$1100

I need it to be quiet, have plenty of USB ports and be able to run CPU intensive tasks

Tbh I would get a different PSU, perhaps an EVGA G2 series or a Seasonic. I don't know enough about Raidmax to have an opinion about it in the pro/con department. Everything else is fine, just make sure you enable XMP so you can take advantage of that 3000MHz RAM. I've never seen a Corsair SSD but they don't make shitty products often so it should be fine.

A GPU isn't necessarily necessary... Just make sure you check where your onboard card benchmarks compared to other onboard cards, and how those compare to actual GPUs so you'll know if you can actually run the games you want to play.

Aside from that, you might as well get 2133Hz DDR4 RAM since that's what your motherboard will support, I would even go with 16 GB to be on the safe side.

You can get literally any optical drive, just whatever is cheap.

A 450-500 watts PSU will be fine. If you can find one that's modular or semi-modular, get it to save space for better airflow. Although it might not matter because it looks like that case has a panel in the back to stick wires behind.

Also make sure whatever monitor you're using is large enough for your workspace. I'm using two 1080p monitors for FL Studio, but a single 1440p or a widescreen display would probably be fine.

I just bought a Asus Z170-AR motherboard along with a bunch of new gear and I can't for the life of me figure out how to set the board to Legacy mode.

I've turned off everything with UEFI and it seems to install windows 7 in a Legacy configuration but then I can't get it to boot.
