Post your component list, rate other anons', ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

More or less what I have right now, mobo/ram are not quite right.
How does the 6GB of vram affect the rendering? I understand a more powerful GPU, but I've never really understood how VRAM plays a role.

Speaking of ram, would more ram be benificial to cadding software? I tend to hover around 60-70% of my ram utilitization on average.

Is raidz really necessary for a torrentbox? Would a JBOD setup actually be better? Is risk of disk failure while rebuilding the pool overstated? I don't like the idea of losing a many TBs of data instead of just the few in a JBOD setup. Convince me raidz is the way to go.

I can vouch for EVGA.

I've been pushing a EVGA 560 to its absolute limits since 2012 and it's still working perfectly. Probably over 10k hours of high load in all those years.

Goal is a near-silent HTPC build for ultra lite computer work (max load would be watching a youtube video).

It's the second computer for my wife and I, and so needs barely any storage; can access other content via network share. It'll be in our lounge room as a media PC/stream box for the kids to watch online content and conntected to the TV.

Dude.. don't. That's 130 bucks out the window. Just get the cheap Silverstone and you're good.
Also, if you want a slient system, the PSU is the least of your problems m8.

Hi /pcbg/ this is not exactly about PC building but I need some advice. I need to buy a gaming laptop. Yes it has to be a laptop because I move a lot. No, I don't play demanding things like FPS, mostly rpgs and strategy and old stuff. But I need it to hold up dammit. So from my research it looks like an i5-7 with a geforce 960m, and most possibly an Asus since in my long years using laptops it's been the most solid brand by very far. I think I'm not being very retarded here but I'd appreciate any input you might have.

>>
>>58100520
Both are decent, but generally speaking, you get more features for the same money with ASRock, and Gigabyte is pissing me off personally, by habitually releasing a fuckton of revisions for the same model of motherboard.

A new I5 4690k costs the same as a 6400 in my country.
Which one would be better for emulation + 60fps/1080p gaming when paired with a gtx 1060?
I feel like the 4690k would be better but it would come back to bite me in the ass in future upgrades because of mobo + ddr4.
What do you guys think?

Just got a new 1060 and it has the same problem as my old amd card. Lots of games get rendered without any regard for the AA settings in the the NCP/CCC, just the game's settings, which seems to be more and more bare bones these days. I used a 3rd party workaround years ago but I can't remember what, it was AMD only as well, I think.

So how do you force AA in games when the "override application settings" option won't do it?

I'm looking to move my rig from an antec 1200 to as small and minimal a case as possible.

I have a full ATX board that I can't replace unless I also upgrade CPU so I'd like it to be able to fit that.

The smallest reasonable I've been able to find are only mid towers.
>>
So I've got around $2000 to blow on building a pc, first-time builder here. Thinking about going for a GTX 1080 with an I7 6700K, 8GB RAM and 2TB HDD. Not sure about case/PSU/mobo yet. Are those parts about where I should be aiming with 2k? Is getting 16GB of RAM a better idea, considering it's $50 vs $100 that I could instead spend on, say, getting a $50 better mobo?
>>
I have a 300W PSU right now in my prebuilt machine. I was looking to do a simple upgrade of a graphics card since the integrated one is garbage. What can I put safely into the machine without risking safety. Eventually I intend to upgrade the power supply as well, but I'm taking this one step at a time.

I was thinking about the Radeon 460 Windforce since i heard it could run without too much power. This is the first time I'll be fiddling with this computer at all, so I'm not really sure what my options are.

4690K would be better for emulation, plus you can OC
But a modern platform probably isn't much more.

>>58100686
Considering your PSU has a 6-pin power connector, you can get a better gfx card like an RX470 (make sure it only requires a 6-pin) or a GTX 1060. You might want the 1060 if the power budget is tight.

Replace the CPU with an Ivy Bridge i5.

If your mobo has a standard power connector, you could replace the PSU if yours is very low wattage.
>>
>>58101052
The other real issue is that I have a $300 budget. I'm trying to get both of them if possible, but my priority is the graphics card.

So if I were to add a 550W like https://pcpartpicker.com/product/DPCwrH/seasonic-power-supply-ssr550rm, what would be a good, still relatively budget option for a graphics card? So I'm looking to build a new 1080p based system and salvage as much as I can from my previous budget build (Speccy included). Budget shouldn't go above $600 USD (possibly even $500) but I can salvage the case (ATX Mid), the PSU, a 212 Evo fan, and the HDD.

I checked the pcbg link in the OP and was wondering if it was worth it to replace the mobo for an Intel CPU, or instead, can I stick with my current mobo and CPU and not risk bottle-necking a new card like a RTX 470/480 or GTX 1060 and spend the money on a new display and SSD?
>>
>>58101829
just get an a10 chip and a 470
>>
>>58101828
Almost completely negligible
If you're permanently using wifi (why the fuck would you? But assuming you would) then get a dual band PCIe/mPCIe wifi adapter, a dual band router and an antenna or leads for an antenna
But if you just want your wifi to work, get a $8 USB wifi adapter and work on finding a big Ethernet cable
>>
>>58101829
Unfortunately you can't use FX CPUs with that board (from what I read off gigabyte's site), so you definitely want to upgrade your mobo/CPU/RAM.

So you're looking at (at min)
>i3 6100 + B150 + 8GB DDR4
>240GB SSD
>Gfx card
>1080p 60Hz display ($50 used)

You can probably get $75 for your mobo+CPU+RAM

>>58101899
>get a dual band PCIe/mPCIe
Can't, he's on mini-ITX
>>
I'm about to buy a z170 setup after having 10 year old 775-stuff. How much different is overclocking memory & cpu now? Is raising the FSB clock and having that boost both cpu and memory still a thing, or is that gone completely? I'm reading some conflicting information on how clocking memory works in relation to the FSB/whatever it is called now.
>>
>>58101829
With your budget, you cannot get all six items, so you have to weigh the benefits of each path. Getting a new screen, new card, and SSD will do much more to improve your overall experience than getting new CPU, mobo, and RAM. Sticking with your current CPU means that you will be bottlenecking your new card in CPU-intensive games, but it will not be THAT big a bottleneck, as the 955 is still decent. Having a weaker CPU is something that you can live with until you can upgrade, and the new SSD will help make everything feel faster.
>>
Is there such a thing as 1080p144hz IPS? My search leads me to think no, and I refuse to accept a TN panel. Considering 1440p144Hz, what is the projected performance if I were to get a 1070 to power it? Would I have to accept lower frame rate in a couple years? Even going that way and justifying $500-$700 for the monitor, I still am forced to take 27" instead of 24".

Can someone please illuminate this quagmire?
>>
>>58101952
He can get a mPCIe wifi card though, that's what 100% of "onboard wifi" ITX boards use, they just wire an antenna plug to the I/O
>>
>>58101997
A 1070 can run a lot of games at 1440p/144hz, and even more if you're willing to lower settings, but it can't play everything. It CAN basically play everything at 1440p/60fps though.
You refuse to buy a TN, that's your mistake and your money, TN panels have gotten great, and you can get 10-bit color with them (most panels including IPS use 8-bit) for reasonable prices
You can't get a high Hz IPS monitor for a reasonable price, that's just unrealistic 1080p or 1440p
>>
>>58101997
Look into VA panels. You probably don't need 144Hz, but you definitely want more than 60Hz

>>58101990
>With your budget, you cannot get all six items,
Yes he can. 1080p monitors are a dime a dozen these days
>>
>>58101997
1080@144Hz screens are all older models. You are most likely correct: They are all TN panels. If you want IPS@144Hz, you need to get 1440p, and it is quite pricey.

I am using a 1440p@144Hz screen right now, with an R9 290. It is fine for most mainstream games. Your 1070 will get 100+FPS in most games other than Witcher 3-tier stuff. You will still get ~60FPS in Witcher 3, but that is not really making the most of your 144Hz screen.
>>
>>58102012

it would be better if he saved the remainder until he has enough for an i3 ($120), mobo ($80), and RAM ($40). Maybe the Zen stuff will be cheaper.

Of course, if he can get the card/screen for much cheaper than what I put up there, then he can make it fit.

I may be able to get the card for cheaper through discounts, but not by much (Looking at the 470 and the Gigabyte version is $180 because of Prime on Amazon). Screen could also be less pricy too. But yeah, I feel stuck doing one or the other all the same.

>>58102265
because its the best cpu you can get for the socket, although if its the am3 socket there might others. 8350s are way too expensive to run, so dont do it imo.

>>
>>58102304
>>58102373

Yeah, my mobo is AM3 socket currently, so most of the AM3+ stuff wont work without some weird peg based, bios-demon summoning voodoo.

>>58102445

Thanks for the link, hopefully the MSI version is alright.

After thinking about it, the easiest route is to just replace the GPU, then add a new screen and an SSD for now, and save the rest up for preparation to switch to a better mobo / chipset and Intel CPU. Thanks for all the help /pcbg/.
>>
>>58102589
if you can just update the bios to use am3+ do it then, but i think upgrading a pc is almost always a bad idea. what you need to do is use it till its dead and dusted sell it and start again.

of course ram upgrades are g, but most of the time its not worth it. Shame they keep changing the socket type

Anyone have some links to some good PC building guides for COMPLETE ignoramuses like myself?

>>
>>58102637
A lot of the higher end boards that originally were shipped as AM3 could be flashed to AM3+ (like my 990).

I like the idea of upgrading over time. This board has a 4300 that I replaced with a 6350. I'll probably upgrade to an 8350 after Zen gets released. After selling the 6350 the upgrade will probably cost me 15-20USD for a 33% theoretical upgrade in CPU power.

I'm hoping that my Hyper 212 Evo will get an AM4 adapter kit, so that I'll have one fewer consideration when I'm deciding between 1151 and AM4
>>
>>58102734
is zen confirmed am3+? if it is i might upgrade too... perhaps this means we'll get some new matx boards at last...

Unfortunately this one didn't get that luxury. If it was a higher revision of my mobo. Mine, I think, is one revision model right before my mobo got am3+ support. (1.4 compared to 3.1). Sucks.

Quality PSUs work for a long time, then die quietly. Some of the best quality PSUs have 10 year warranties, so you getting 8 years is good. If the PSU is not giving you any trouble, keep it till it dies.

Low quality PSUs do that, but they do that a lot earlier than 8 years. If you have a low quality PSU and you got very lucky with it living for 8 years, then change it for sure.

Also, if you are wealthy and can afford to replace a working item for something new just for peace of mind, you can get a new PSU as well.

Seems like a decent budget case. Enough room for fans, but based on a couple reviews they have stopped supporting the case, so if you wish to buy extras or whatever they're doing for a 'modular case' you'll be disappointed.

As for the graphics, personally I'd go 1060 6GB. But in all honesty the performance difference is miniscule, probably 5% performance difference, going up or down depending on the API. Go with what you feel comfortable spending the money for, they're both solid choices at this point.

Keep in mind G-Sync has a hefty premium if you ever wish to opt into A-Sync monitors, however.

1070's should be ~$400 now, and widely available at that price. Most of the big names (Gigabyte, MSI, Asus) have excellent units for that price. The only one with an issue (iirc) is one particular EVGA unit, which explodes when under stress. Avoid that one, unless you want to take it apart and add the thermal pads they are giving as a fix.

No big problem I thought, just get an adapter right? Well I'm looking into them now and it looks like they don't support 1366x768 for some reason (which is my shitty monitors resolution.

I found one that lists 1360x768 as supported, but not 1366. Do you think it will support it anyway? Maybe it is just listing 1360 because it is more popular?

The only alternetive I have is to have my monitor in 130x768 res, but it makes everything just blurry enoughto hurt my eyes.

Fuck off.
>>
>>58108933
i7 has hyperthreading(and is clocked a little higher), so anything that can efficiently use more than 4 cores(like CAD and compiling, games not so much) will benefit from one. The k models are clocked a little higher and can be overclocked1. They're probably2 not worth getting over non-k models unless you're planning to overclock them.

1Locked Skylake CPUs can also be overclocked via increasing the base clock(as opposed to increasing the multiplier, which is how overclocking is usually done), but only with specific motherboards and with specific versions of the BIOS. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, though.

26600k isn't really good value over 6500 or 6600. 6700k is debatable, since it's only like $10 more than the non-k version so if you're already paying $300+, it's only marginally more expensive.
>>
>>58100227

Is there a way to set a resolution of 1360x768 on a 1366x768 monitor without it stretching?

I just want the 3px black border on each side, I thought that would be easy enough to do but I can't figure it out, mainly because I'm not even sure what the name of what I want is.

So your priorities are shit. I guess that was obvious from your problem in the first place.

Over the last month I'd been putting a desktop together. I finally got it up and running on Saturday.

- ASUS Maximus VIII Ranger motherboard
- Intel i7-6700k cpu
- EVGA GTX 1080 HydroCopper gpu
- 16gb DDR4 RAM
- 256gb M.2 ssd
- 2tb HDD
- Full loop water cooling, aquacomputer & hardwarelabs mostly. EK cpu block.

I built it to play Planetside 2, Star Citizen, War Thunder, Squad, things like that.

I've been fucking around now for a few days just trying to get some fairly basic shit working under Linux. Is this indicative of what my entire Linux experience is going to be like? I haven't even begun trying to set up WINE or a VM for gaming yet.

Do I stick with it? At what point is it just not worth it and I should just install windows 10?

Well, As someone else who's basically played all of those, you're going to probably want to try and get Windows 7/8/10, depending on preference i guess.

I used to have a mac which used WINE to play all of my windows steam games on it, but wine inherently has flaws which can make games break, mostly relating to improperly installing drivers and missing corefiles, these carry over to linux as well when i tried them. If you can put the effort into it and prefer the look of linux, go for it, you'll likely be able to do more, but if you simply want to game get Windows and just rice it, you'll get about the same looks at better native performance.

Fuck, kind of what I was afraid of. I just don't know at this point if I should go through the effort of getting a VM set up with pci passthrough or if I should just wipe everything and set up a dual-boot situation.

I don't prefer anything about linux besides it not being controlled by Microsoft and the opportunity to learn some new OS skills.

this makes me sad. im also a neet, but i think i have psychological problems and social skills that were stunted at a young age from childhood trauma and years of stress... homelessness worries me as im stuck in a permanent state of depression.... what worries me more is knowing people dont care. that they would see me as a burden and wish for me to disappear when ive tried my best to stay out of the way.

I've tried dual-boot before, and to be honest i'll tell you that if you want to go for that, do it BEFORE you start using either of your OS's. It's not particularly hard, just fiddly, and will probably work better than otherwise cuz you can launch your windows for gaming and linux for whatever else you want.

Don't ever try to dualboot with a macintosh, despite owning one it is the most fucking difficult thing i've ever encountered in my life, even the tool they provide is a piece of shit that doesn't let you do it in the best of situations
>>
>>58114705
I also forgot to mention that WINE will not like DX12, at all. i've been there, and sometimes it will work fantastically, other times it will just shit itself and you actually have to rebuild the wrapper for it to be able to play again.
>>
>>58114775

It's obvious from your post that your "psychological problems" are 100% self diagnosed and you're just using them as an excuse for your personal failings. Even if you do have genuine psychological hurdles to overcome, you're still obviously using them as an excuse.

Childhood trauma and years of stress? Nigger do you really thing your story is unique? Do you really think your struggles were truly adverse? Do you honestly believe that anything you've been "subjected" to in your short and comfier than most life excuses the way you've chosen to live it. It IS a choice.

You're worried about being homeless and that's why you're depressed?

No, you're depressed because you recognize your own helplessness and you're too fucking useless to do anything about it. You're depressed because you KNOW you're a burden. "People like me" don't see you as a burden, you ARE one. I don't give a fuck whether you disappear or not, I just don't want to carry your weight.

Dual-booting really does sound like a pain in the ass, and honestly I'll probably skip that option entirely. I'll give Ubuntu until the end of the week and if I can't play a fucking game by Saturday or Sunday I'm going to try all over again with Arch / Antergos. I'll give that another week and if by the following Saturday I'm not playing games the Linux community can suck my cock and I'm going back to using Windows.

3 weeks is long enough.

Lads, so I bought parts for a new machine but I'm getting BSOD whenever I try to install windows. Computers posts, goes to bios, and then shit gets weird. I'm getting windows error 0xc00000e9, which says hard drive issue. But I've tried 3 hard drives, and nothing. I've tried two sets of ram, nothing. I've tried installing windows from DVD and USB, it doesn't matter. I can't even boot into ubuntu from USB.

So I'm thinking it's either the motherboard or the CPU. Does the information above suggest one over the other?

This one was the one I was considering.
>>
>>58117381
Bit excessive, but seasonic is a good brand.

I feel like you'd get a better deal with a 750w seasonic, if you decide to upgrade your CPU/GPU to some serious high grade parts, it'd work out.

But for the most part, a 500w PSU should work out, and if seasonic/evga doesn't have it, then I guess go with that.

But if you really want to save money, go EVGA 80+ Bronze 500w, half the price.
>>
>>58117448
Thanks for the recommendations. I think I might upgrade to the 750w in that case. It doesn't seem that much more expensive, and if it helps ensure I'll be able to upgrade in the future, ten or twenty bucks may just be worth it.
>>
>>58117261
Your prebuilt may have a special connection between the mobo and PSU, in which case you can't just swap it out
>>
>>58117579
I believe it uses standard connectors. I've checked in it myself as well as seen a few people online upgrade this very same prebuilt and I don't remember there being anything fucky with the PSU and mobo, I'll certainly check again though, just to be sure. I think the only thing I need to keep in mind is making sure it's the same size or close to the size of the old one.
