Literally the main reason I use Unity (Ubuntu) is because it's hardware-accelerated/composited out of the box

Are those WMs like Awesome or i3 also hardware accelerated/composited or can they be? I didn't like how Xfeces was clunky to set up for compositing even though I got it working okay with Compton.

Yeah it may only suffer 1 crash every 2 years, but if you are running data centers worth of servers, that means you'll spend all day, every day, putting out fires instead of building new things.

It doesn't really matter what your desktop runs but I want stable over all the servers, it's also easy as hell to patch stuff yourself but I guess you are far away from that.
>>
>>58034363
>>58034368
How I can do this?
>>
>>58034217
Do you think servers never get replace or rebooted? I build out new datacenters all the time, but I'm not going to put 4.11 on them because there is a lot of code that needs to prove itself before it is ready for the big time.

You are right that kpatch was only added in 4.0, but you are demonstrating how much you don't know if you think that is the only way to hotpatch the kernel. Various solutions for that have been around for a decade. Besides, you can basically only use hotpatching for very small changes. For instance none of the hotpatchers that I'm aware of have the ability to apply patches that include changes to data structures in the kernel. So you can go from 4.4.0-52 to 4.4.0-53, but you can't go from 4.4.0-53 to 4.11.0-1. There is also a performance penalty to the kernel because you have to intercept function calls and map them to the replacement code.

>>58034460

>>
>>58034379
meh, Not only do kernel updates bring with it security fixes, but it can fix other issues that could possibly make the system crash through regular use. Some people argue that constantly updating the kernel actually decreases the overall system stability because you’ll be running on a kernel that you’ve never used, so you cannot assume that it will work as well as the kernel you were previously running on. While this is also true, that margin is rather slim, and only people who run servers or other important systems really need to be cautious. For most normal consumer-type users, updating your kernel outweighs those issues by a lot.

Also many major updates to the kernel improve the overall speed of the system. While some changes can be very subtle, others aren’t and can make a big difference, such as the famed 200-line patch (see https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=linux_2637_video&num=1 ) that increased the overall productivity of a Linux machine by quite a bit. There are even some crazier changes such as this, where Linux can run off of zero CPU cores (see https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTA4MTc ). If you’re a speed demon (and I know many of you who use Google Chrome are), this is a good way to get a bit more juice out of your hardware.

What's the "right" way to encrypt large files on GNU/Linux?

Is containers and dm-crypt the best approach?

The biggest problem seems to be having enough space for the container and the content. Is there something glaringly obvious that I am missing?

Just use gpg. The container is all you need. When you open it access the data when you're done you just seal it back up

>>
>>58034652
>use gpg
but the problem with gpg is that it doesn't delete the original data after encrypting (unless you extend its functionality with scripting). This means you essentially need double the space of the original file to encrypt. Unless I'm missing something obvious there is no way to make gpg encrypt and only keep the encrypted version.

Since you're the stupid toddler here, I'll help you.

Let's start with module names.

python -m SimpleHTTPServer 8080

While this command will work on all distros and serve to current directory, but on Arch it will fail, because the python3 module is called "http.server" instead of "SimpleHTTPServer".

In the same way, all programs that use python2 syntax, module names, etc will and do break on Arch Linux.

Do you have GRUB on said HDD?
If so, try to boot from the HDD with Gentoo.
If not, you haven't configured GRUB correctly before rebooting.
In that case, you just have to chroot into your system again and just run
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
. OR you didn't install the kernel into /boot. Which could also happen. So, you might have to do that instead of the GRUB thing.
Perhaps even both.

I had this same problem on my t460. There's actually a physical switch somewhere on the motherboard that you have to disable.
This turns off the new proprietary standard that lenovo has started using in some of the newer models called "safe switch."

It's kind of like the bootloader on a phone where it prevents any changes from being made to the bootloader so it won't let you install grub.
I wasn't able to find any guides on this online, but I figure it out myself pretty easily. If you open the bottom and post a picture I can walk you through it.

>>

nice bait! you'll have to wait 10 more years though.
>>
>>58036941
The display server hardly has anything to do with UI design and X11 isn't going anywhere in the near future.
We will actually lose features and will need to gradually fill holes left by those.
Another related thing is that Wayland is being gimped in some areas because security considerations, a lot of people use environments where said security issues aren't a concern.
So we end up with a lot of usage cases that compositors need to fill, yet again extending the protocol. So we are doing fragmentation even before the project is in widespread use.
Most likely more extensions will crop up with graphics stacks etc.
We might end in situations where say kwin doesn't support proprietary nvidia drivers, but mutter does.

Wayland maybe the future, but it's no looking so bright anymore is it?

Gents,
I'm installing Arch on a brand-new SSD that I got today and I'd like to implement full disk encryption.

I've been looking at Arch wiki and options for dm-crypt and it appears that I cannot use LUKS because that fucks up TRIM.

From the Wiki, it appears that the best option for SSD drives is #Plain dm-crypt.

Does anyone know if that's right or has done this and can offer me some advice?

Thanks!

Holy FUCK, Wayland is fast and smooth. There are a few bugs in big, ugly X programs that don't stay within their toolkits (Firefox, Emacs) but porting work is underway.
>>
>>58038164
There's no way to do proper encryption of any sort with TRIM on an SSD since you're leaking data by allowing the firmware to reshuffle shit around. If your threat model is just random nogs stealing your laptop then go ahead and turn TRIM on, but if you're worried about state actors leave it off.

GPU passthrough gives you a full Windows VM for muhgaemz, with real direct access to your GPU. The only bug you have to watch out for is that if you have the Nvidia driver, Nvidia will periodically push updates to block you using geforce cards in a VM until the KVM devs find another workaround. They do this because they make fucktons of money on selling Quadro cards for people using GPUs on servers and don't want to give up the shekels. If you have an AMD card it pretty much just werkz.

This post gave an idea.
>>
>>58040700
I suppose it a mechanical disk especially with a bad filesystem (like ntfs) and with a single partition it makes a difference because a swapfile that resizes could increase fragmentation a lot and slow down file access

But in a SSD I don't think it makes a difference and it's easier to maintain. A good move imo.
>>
>>58030721
Where did the BSD General go? Why no more?

Can I request a beginner BSD distro here?
>>
>>58040748
Freebsd if you read the manual. Debian/kFreeBSD if you are interested.
>>
>>58040726

But no one uses ntfs for his Linux partitions.
Speaking of ntfs, I hate it so much in combination with Linux. It fucks up file permissions and makes everything 777. Whenever I have to copy something from an USB flash drive I want to kill myself.
>>
>>58040873
Exactly, Linux file systems are good at avoiding fragmentation and with SSD the physical position of data on the drive doesn't make a difference as it did in mechanical drives

So it makes sense to abandon the swap partition because it makes things easier to figure out for new Linux users. Experienced Linux administrators can always use a swap partition if they prefer.
>>
>>58040873
NTFS is good for usb hard disks because it makes file sharing easy with any OS and you can connect the disk to a TV

Before NTFS-3G I had to have 3 partition on every external disk, one EXT3 for Linux, one FAT32 for file sharing with Windows, and one NTFS because fat didn't support >4GB files. It sucked.

Go back to windows. Linux is a tool, not a toy. Linux is made for coding only.

Yeah you can run a win7 VM on linux. And it's the best option for gaming on linux.
>>
>>58043547
Not him, but if you want to be technical about it, it is.
It's just mostly used for piping the stream into mpv.
And if it wasn't, why is it called 'youtube-dl'?
I know that it can be also used for various other sites and not only YT.
>>
>>58043631
It started a simple youtube downloader, but now it supports thousands of services and is used by many programs to get the stream link.
