Aksing this again, although the anon in the other thread was helpful, I wouldn't mind reading more on the subject. He recommended two boosk, namely "Network Security Assesment" and "A Guide to Computer Network Security".

What are some others on the subjects, specifically those protocols and cryptography?

So I want to setup a 5.1audio system
Can I buy a cheap receiver and send only audio through optical from my mobo and th send vĂdeo signal from my gpu to my tv?

My tv is 4K so if I were to connect it to my receiver I would need to buy a receiver caplable of 4K/60hz 4:4:4 and that goes like double my Budget

The other workaroubd I have found is to buy 3 lepai amp and send audio signal from my mobo to each amp

What's the difference between the reboot at the end of a Linux installation and the normal reboot?

I have a Surface 2 Pro with a bad internal drive and installed Mint 18 on a 128gb micro SD. When it rebooted at the end of the installation it booted from the micro SD and everything worked fine. But when I turned it off and back on a week later it's back to acting like it has no OS (goes straight to the "Trusted Platform Enable/Disable, Secure Boot Enable/Disable" menu and nothing else.

Can I run the end-of-installation reboot from Terminal via bootable USB or do I have to sit through installation again and just never turn it off?

I bought a Gigabyte GTX 1060 3gb for $200 and I'm alright with it, I'm just kinda curious if an RX 480 would've been a better buy.
I game at 1080p, and am not planning on upgrading to 1440p or anything any time soon, so memory isn't a concern. 3gb vs 4gb of memory isn't something I'm worried about as I came from a 1gb 650 ti and could live with that.

I'm heading by the store I got it at tomorrow for other reasons but while I'm there, should I return it and get a 480?
>>
>>58005356

>>
>>58001722
WD red or comparable Seagate server drive + external hard drive enclosure or dock.
The WD red is pretty reliable and since you shouldn't be moving it and tossing it around a lot, an 'ultra rugged' enclosure or external travel drive isn't needed.
>>
>>58005374
If it's the same price, yes. Especially if you can get an XFX GTR one, reviews seem to show that XFX has the best 480s. New drivers have the 480 basically equal in dx11, and noticeably better in dx12 (comparing reference to reference). I hear the 3gb 1060 is a bit slower than the 6gb as well.
If it's noticeably more expensive for the 480, stick with your 1060, as the 480 is only marginally better and consumes a bit more power.
>>
Why are NVIDIA GPUs/drivers so shit now?

I bought a GTX 680 in 2012. It ran flawlessly for four years, never had a driver crash ever, every game ran fine, good temps, hardly audible, etc.

My PC was murdered by a family member and I had to build a new one.

My new GTX 1070 runs hot as fuck, loud as fuck, often has some shit tier coil whine, I regularly have driver crashes, sometimes I even download newer drivers and fuck my performance in some games over.

What happened?

>>
>>58005478
Coil whine and running hot are AIB issues usually, or did you buy reference?
>>
>>58005374
I'd say get the RX 480. AMD generally gives you a better deal for your money. The only time you would want to buy NVidia is if you wanted a super graphics card, the kind that AMD doesn't have, but since you don't want something like a 1080, AMD is your best bet. You get better specs and pay less.
>>
>>58005513
MSI Gaming X was what I bought.

And I just say hot relative to my 680... Even at 100% for hours my 680 would top out at like ~70C... And I couldn't even hear its fans.

This 1070 regularly gets into the mid 80s... And that's with its fans sounding like a fucking jet engine... MSI support told me those temps are perfectly normal.

4chan was not my first resort here. I don't mean to be rude, but "google something" is hardly a helpful reply.
The myriad installation problems in the linux threads all involve a working drive in the Surface. The closest thing I've found is instructions to install the boot partition on the internal drive and the OS on the micro SD and that doesn't help since the Surface is not detecting the internal drive at all (I think it's loose and these are a bitch to open and work on).

I know there's a difference between the normal reboot and the reboot at the end of the Linux installation because it did a warm reboot and loaded off the micro SD. The question is only "can I instigate this type of reboot from Terminal and if so, how?" and if you don't know, that's okay. Maybe someone else does.

To reiterate, the Linux install worked correctly, but during a normal warm or cold boot the Surface is not looking to the micro SD for an OS. BUT the reboot at the end of the Linux install *did* cause the Surface to look to the micro SD for an OS and I'd like to know how to do that without formatting and reinstalling every time I turn it off.

Just got some speakers for my PC. Every time I want to switch between speakers and headphones I have to change "Default Device" under Playback sound options, and then change the device for the volume mixer to change volume. Wtf.

Am I missing something , or is their a more efficient way of being able to switch between speakers and headphones with ease?

It's plain english, anon.

After finishing the installation, it prompted me to remove the installation medium and it rebooted and it worked. After turning it off and cold booting, it did not work. After booting by bootable USB and then rebooting (and removing bootable USB) it did not work.
Something definitely happened during the post-install reboot that did not happen during a cold boot or reboot from USB. I don't know what, and apparently you don't either.
That's okay, though, thank you anyway for trying to help.

This isnt a thing, it is not another special program that magically shuts down. It is literally the same reboot that everyone has.

What's an example of a simple problem where this is the best approach? How do you tell if a keyboard is shit? I want a decent wireless/mouse thing for when I am in bed, and I've always wanted a backlit keyboard so I found these two things on amazon:

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01AUO3UYS/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?smid=A2IJXZ1FD77INR&psc=1

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00ORFW2UA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A15CBTP5BTSNTZ&psc=1

I am super less concerned about the wireless one as it's just something quick and dirty, but I want it to be full size.

The backlit one would be my main keyboard though, I don't want it to be a waste.

Also if I add a third monitor to my setup, is that going to cause my computer to explode? Especially while doing the vidya gamin?

1. You clearly have no idea what might be causing it to fail on every reboot after the first
2. You didn't ask for logs
3. post-install reboot just means the reboot that happens at the end of the installation
4. do you not even know that systems can reboot with special instructions? have you literally never seen "your computer may restart several times during this process"? do you not get the fact that this means it is doing something during this reboot which does not happen during a cold boot which is why the process continues after the reboot? do you not realize that rebooting with special instruction does not require a different reboot command, just accompanying instruction?

1. Your card most likely is not being recognized and or is mis-formated.Your chroot instance(the magic install shell) is supplying it properly
2. You didnt take the smallest step and provide the basic set of logs
3.You are classifying this """""post install reboot""""" as something special(other did you give it a name with a name then just """reboot"""
4.Maybe in your windows world, but when using linux, outside of maybe a special run around touching the kernel, you wont ever have such a thing.
5. No one is going to help you if you are this combative

>>58007379
I don't have a link, but basically since they are hard disk drives, the disk drives are most likely fine. When you get a new PSU, maybe try powering the HDD. They may still work, but if they are fried it could damage other things by shorting out or supplying a higher voltage over the SATA cable to the mobo or something. If you don't want to try that, the way you would recover the data is by putting the disks in an identical drive with a good controller, or putting a new controller into the bad HDD.

It won't be easy mind you, but that's probably what data restoration professionals would try if the drive was non-responsive. Make sure it's the same logic board. Same manufacturer, same model. Some models may share a logic board, but I'm not sure. You would have to research the specific ones

like with a tree view? Yes. If you want something like explorer, I think there's third party ones with a tree view.
Look into windirstat if you want more of a tool. It's really useful for figuring out where all of your space went.
You could probably write a batch script or python or something, but not every file type will have a metadata tag appropriate for that. Having the android device sort by filetype is probably the easiest way though.

I ordered the components for a custom built gaming PC back in 2012 and am now looking to upgrade. I'm an amateur so I would love any input or advice. I use the PC for school and gaming-wise I run things like Skyrim, Overwatch, CSGO etc. My budget is ~$1000 CDN

Here is the current setup:
CPU: Intel Core i7 3770K @ 3.50GHz
RAM: 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3
MOBO: ASUS P8Z77-V LK
GFX: 2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660
SSD: 111GB OCZ-VERTEX3 (BOOT)
SATA: 931GB Seagate ST1000DM003-1CH162
POWER: 750w

I am definitely going to upgrade my chassis for aesthetic reasons, and I'm pretty sure I've decided on the Corsair CC-9011048-WW (pictured) However there is also the option of a Mini/Micro ATX version of the case which is significantly cheaper, but I'm unaware if the smaller MOBOs will fit my needs, thoughts? My current MOBO hasn't given me any problems, and I'm definitely not upgrading my CPU.

What do you think I should upgrade? Should I buy a MiniATX, regular ATX or just use my old one? Should I upgrade my RAM? What else do I need when purchasing a new chassis? Should I get 2 new SSDs or just one? Should I buy custom weaved cables? How can I tell if RGB LED strips are compatible with a MOBO or PS?

Right now the things I may purchase are:

GFX: (CDN$ 365.93) EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 GAMING, ACX 2.0 (Single Fan), 6GB GDDR5 Graphics Card, 06G-P4-6161-KR
MOBO: (CDN$ 240.99) GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 (rev. 1.0) LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

I'm having a serious problem with my computer and it started to happen today. I had my computer running for a couple of weeks now an decided to clean it out. I didn't so much cleaning because the R4 makes my job easier. Cleaned off the fan filters, powered it on, suck on the BIOS splash screen. I remember this same thing had happened before and a restart usually fixed it but that didn't happen. I unplugged it, waited awhile and plugged it back in. This time it finally let me back on Windows 10 but right after I got all happy it gets unresponsive again on Firefox. Flip the reset switch in the back, power it back on, suck on the BIOS screen again. At this point I had to narrow it down to some sort of hardware issue so just had the KB+M plugged in, removed one RAM stick and it worked. I put in a second stick and it kept getting stuck in a bootloop where it kept restarting every 2-3 seconds which means something is shorting something. Eventually after about an hour trying to screw around with it I updated the graphics card driver because I was thinking that was the problem but it wasn't. I ran 12 cycles in memtest64 to see if there were any errors, nothing, even took out the CMOS battery for good measure and still nothing. I have a feeling that my ssd is starting to fail but ssdlife is telling me something completely different. In the process of trying to reinstall Windows 10 it reached 100%, restart, and now in the boot menu the SSD isn't showing up now. If I were to unplug my computer and wait a bit then it would show up. Anyone have any ideas? I'm almost positive at this point it's the SSD

850 EVO is a SATA SSD.
950 EVO is the M2 version.

When you need a feature a new motherboard came with.
In example, M2 slot, DDR4 RAM, Need to upgrade CPU because its outdated or doesn't meet your requirements for what you are doing, etc.

1070 is overkill for 1080@60FPS, get one if you are going to play at 144Hz or 1440+.
GTX 1060 6GB enough for high settings at 1080@60FPS.

>Is M2 worth it?
Not really, SATA SSDs are good enough.
They are really expensive to be worth it and you cant notice the improvement in most stuff.
SATA SSDs like the 850 EVO are already fast enough for everything.

>New monitor
Motherboard? No.
1070? No exactly but it would go great with it.

>>58008863
>Yes SSD plus
I thought so, i wouldn't be surprised if it started failing, its a early low end TLC SSD after all.
6 years sounds good enough from it.

Still check the SATA cable.

I see on consoles, like a ps4, it upscales content to the max monitor/tv resolution. Does anything on a PC do this? Say you play a blu ray on your PC that's only 1080p but you have a 1440p monitor, can you upscale the video to 1440p or does it just get stretched?
>>

thank you very much for the info. so I think i'm going to buy this case, a 1070 card (do i need 2 fans?) and probably a 1440k monitor. given my setup should this all work with 750w?

also random question would LED strips like this work as lighting for my case?

One of the main things you should look in a GPU is cooling so yeah.

Yes, 750W is more than enough.

Before adding LED strips and other decorations first get in order what you will buy since you will spend a good amount of money on the GPU alone.
>>
>>58009063
the monitor is probably a few months down the line purchase but I want to really enjoy an above 1080p experience at some point and itll be a long time after this that i upgrade.

do you have any suggestions for a 1070 card? this is what im looking at

also how many fans do you think i should run in the case I am getting?
>>
>>58009119
EVGA had problems with VRMs turning on literal fire on their GTX 10x0 line.

Try MSI or Zotac.

Also Corsair carbide 540?
Looks quite expensive but cases are mostly personal choices so up to you.

Usually 1 intake and 1 exaust is enough.
1 intake and 2 exhaust are good too.
>>
>>58002827
No, yes, install Windows first (if it isn't already) and Linux Mint second, so you get GRUB.

You should be able to get files from other partitions if they're in a compatible format, all you need to do is mount it.

Partition with that Windows partition manager shit. If you just use GParted you might fuck it up if it isn't just installed. It might say that it can't shrink it's partition past x MB/GB, even though you have y GB free space left, and I can't help you with that one.

Don't fuck up.

It's not worth getting, especially not now.
If you're on a tight budget you should wait until Zen.
Not to buy zen, but just to see if it's good or not.
If it's good, prices on CPUs are gonna come down.
If it's not, AMD is dead and you'd better get a CPU before prices shoot up

It's a fine enough processor in some situations.

If you're into gaming it gets badly let down by the crappier single thread performance.

It does tend to overclock well though.

That said a run of the mill i5 should easily best it in most situations.

Will prices go down on any CPUs when zen is released? I'm not in US so it's unlikely I'll get the trickle down value for ages. I'm pulling the pin on my build in Feb next year so I still have time. I'm leaning towards Intel though, and buying a 1050Ti with it.

Checked the cables they're fine. It was actually a Kingston SSD sorry. It seems like this hangup problem only happens when it wants to. I'm not sure of anything else that would cause the system to freeze like this and then having BIOS not being able to find the driver. I never flashed the firmware before, is that something I should look into?

I meant flashing my SSD

Would any version of Linux show this? Like I said I tried some AVG rescue boot USB and it said there was a problem with the mounting drive or something along those lines. It was a Linux program I believe.

I probably have no other choice but to go back to 7. If that fixes my problem I'll never use 10 again.

Yes, just make a Linux Mint USB and check that your SSD is being detected and run the test benchmark on it.

Also that your PC is not crashing while you are using it.

Also if you are using a SV300 you bought probably one of the worst SSDs available leaving chink SSDs aside.
You got what you paid for.

Kickstarting a "dead" LiPo in a thrifted tablet while I wait for a replacement. The protection circuit is hella aggressive and won't charge if it goes below 3.6. I found the cells at 3.0 volts. Currently bypassing the circuit by feeding electricity through a spliced USB cable sitting on the cell tabs. Looking to go to just under 4.2 volts before I put it back in. Power source is a 1A battery bank that happens to have the same 6000 mAh capacity as the battery pack. The 9 volts are there just to weigh down the wire.
Also, the cells seem to balance each other automagically, as measuring either of them results in the same reading despite having only fed one.
Anything else I should be aware of? Is the voltage going to spike near the end of the charge? Maybe I should check in with >>>/diy/ or >>>/toy/?

If you do not care about storage space - yes (Currently at ~3TB, 113818 songs). You can always convert down, but not up. That is why a long term flac library makes sense: Not because of any fancy difference that might be heard, but because you can always use the currently best lossy format if you are away.
In the moment, that might be Opus.

Oh, and don't even try flac with any preset over 5 - that's not worth it.
