having my USB HDD plugged in messes up my boot. It tries to do then "windows is loading files" thing for no reason (there's no boot media on any drive etc) and then complains about startup being busted. When I remove the drive everything is kosher. The mobo is a MSI X99A Raider and the HDD is a WD Elements or something, 3TB. The HDD isn't even listed anywhere when I go to BIOS, and the #1 boot choice is the Windows loader or whatever. What am I not getting? A normal USB stick being plugged does not mess up the boot.

I'm debating getting a few 32-128gb flash drives to install linux onto as a way to test several distros at a time. Would this be an efficient way? Once I get them and find a few that I like, I want to be able to plug them in and boot from them as a way to run Linux without worrying about repartitioning drives every time. Essentially using them as external hard drives to use a personalized OS on any computer I come into contact with that isn't my own. Will this even work?

I'm using Iridium browser and Facebook is broken, I can't see all my contacts in the chat box and every time I try to send a picture it says it's not a valid image file. I already gave permission for Facebook to set cookies and still nothing. This started out of nowhere, it was working fine yesterday. I tried with Chromium and got the same result, but Icecat and other Firefox-based browsers work fine.

think my PSU is on the blink

it won't power up unless it's been unplugged for about 10 minutes beforehand
and when it does boot, sometimes the primary HDD refuses to work
but when it's on, it works fine

is it the PSU?
trying to reboot it just puts the power light on for a split second, then the whole system is unresponsive until you unplug it

How well do old core i7s hold up to newer core i5s / i3s?

The current main thing I use for browsing / music / etc. is a macbook air from school, with an i7-2677M 1.8ghz from I think 2011. I know chrome would mostly be a ram thing, but in general would I see a performance decrease if I was using a slightly less old core i5 (or even something cheaper like a new Atom)?

Reposting from another thread

I currently already have a decent rig but wanted to get a laptop because I am often away from home. I would like to be able to play at least some basic games to keep me occupied if it comes down to it. I'm in a hotel often but don't really want to make a mini itx build to carry around. So I can either buy a new "gaymen" laptop with a 1060 in it OR I can buy a Laptop with type-c thunderbolt and a good processor and use something like the Alienware AMP to put in my 390x. Anyone with any recommendations helps.

Is a computer science degree good if I only care about low level concepts like operating system design? I've heard computer engineering and software engineering thrown around and don't know much about them, but I get the impression somehow that they're more or less a joke. HTPC question.

I am in a household of avid movie and TV lovers, we have a gigantic bluray collection and while we love physical we would like to have everything we buy more easily and quickly accessible.

So we had a plan to put together a really high storage FreeNAS server to dump bluray remuxes of our stuff onto then have a small Kodi HTPC in every room with a TV to stream them from.

Now I need to know what specs this will require, keep in mind we're looking to have full REMUXES dumped on the storage, not low bitrate re-encodes or Plex re-encoded streams. So we're talking the full 30-40GB MKV files with with 25-50 Mbps bitrates.

I don't know if this means we'll need a bit stronger CPU in each HTPC. How much RAM, etc. The FreeNAS box is likely to be quite expensive (but we've all agreed to that, since it can also be used to store personal other things with RAID redundancy for better protection than our regular PCs) and I want to try and keep the HTPCs as cheap as we can.

Redpill me on Windows 10.

I was told two things about it: it is impossible to completely disable telemetshit (telemetry) on it, and Windows 7 now has forced batch updates on it which makes W10 the only modern Windows option. Are either of these claims true?

I just completely fucked my Android devices screen, and W10 allows Android apps, so I think I need it. I removed (but still have) the serial number on my Android device a week ago since it was falling off so I have low hopes for warranty helping me out here.
>>
>>57993025
Responding to myself but sorry for the poor wording on "forced batch updates". I only meant apparently W7 updates are now pushed in batches, which disallows cherrypicking everything but telemetshit updates.

Hey thanks for the feedback, and I'm sorry but I have a scummy extra question to ask.

Is it possible to pirate W10? I pirated W7 and last I heard of W10 was when it was announced free before all the details of that were even out. All anyone had to say on pirating W10 was pure speculation.

Now that I say this though, I might want to just use an android emulator, I guess, however inconvenient...

I'm not experienced/knowledgable enough to talk about "impossible" but it's definitely beyond "difficult". People have run "telemetry removal" kits and still detected suspicious traffic.

I find it amusing that every time I bring this up someone's like 'THEFUCKAREYOUTALKINGABOUT??!?'

Yeah, they're not releasing individual updates any more. Said the windows 10 update model was such a big success they decided to backport it. I haven't heard anything officially about windows update forcing updates, but they're simply not going to release the individual versions any more. All you can do is get cumulative updates with everything, or nothing. The exception is the monthly security only updates rollup, but they're going to be a pain to get.

http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-to-move-to-monthly-patch-rollups-for-windows-7-8-1-as-of-october-2016/
http://arstechnica.com/business/2016/08/windows-7-8-1-moving-to-windows-10s-cumulative-update-model/
-

However, I don't quite know what telemetry is. All I do know is I don't want to feed m$. Not to say I hate Microsoft for making cash, or dislike their anything, but it's a burden of proof thing, you know. I'd rather not deal with something I don't need to.

Hey /g/, just got a 4K TV.
I plugged my PC into the TV directly with an HDMI cable and it looked fine.
Well, I'm a /v/ag and have consoles, so I like to have an HDMI switch.
I bought a switch.
When going through the switch, small white pixels pop up on my TV screen, some flickering.
Also, when resolution is set to 1920x1080, the dots disappear.
My game consoles running through the same switch also get no dots.
I'm using a GTX980.

At a base level, I'm pretty sure it means giving metrics (information, statistics) back to Microsoft. In this case, it includes screenshots, program usage, lots of Cortana info, etc. etc.. I think installgentoo wiki has sources.

Even if you opt out of giving data in the installation, it does it anyway. I personally have a bit of issue with the privacy issues, but mostly my issue is the "fuck you" attitude Microsoft does it with.

Also, I guess I'm this thread's 'THEFUCKAREYOUTALKINGABOUT??!?' guy. fair enough.

Aye, totally. I think anyone not in the know will sorta flip tables when told they literally just will not have as much freedom as they did prior beyond a specific date.

But yeah. I've observed the descriptions for telemetry toggles and the like, and I really dislike the idea of giving anyone anything when I need not do so. I didn't know they eat screenshots, however. That's pretty not cool with me.

Dumbass who fried his motherboard last week, back again with a new mobo and similar problems...

With integrated graphics, I can boot to BIOS just fine, but when I stick in my GPU and try to turn it on, the CPU and GPU fans just twitch but nothing starts...
I have it breadboarded now, and hooked in my case's power switch; if I hold the power button down for 5 seconds, it will reset and I can make it twitch again, but nothing else.
Setup is:
Gigabyte GA-Z97N-WIFI
i7 4790k
Stock Intel cpu cooler
16GB RAM
OCZ 700w PSU
ASUS strix 980ti

I'll try to pull the 800w power supply from my main pc in the morning and see if that makes any difference.
>>
>>57994302
650 is cutting it a tad close. But yeah, without any peripherals in, that should be fine. Again, might be a bad rail, or just a shoddy PSU that ain't pushing the power it says.
Other than that, have you tried putting the GPU in a different mobo?

So I bought a bunch of anime BDs, only to realize that I don't have a way of playing them. What would an external Blu-ray drive do for me? Their Blackwidow switched from Cherry MX Blue switches to Gateron (cheaper) switches a few years ago without decreasing the sale price. Not to mention Razer's reliability seems really here and there.

Deathadders have had a history of double clicking after two years, just after their warranty expires. But others have told of using them for many years, some even over half a decade, even closer to a full decade. But double click issues are still written for miles.

You also may be paying premium for the gaymen aesthetic and Razer brand, however that doesn't inherently take Razer gear off recommended lists, so it may not be worth considering, dunno. I've only seen strong, dissenting arguments for the above two Razer products- the Deathadder and Blackwidow (before the keyswitch change.)

Hello

I've recently taken up programming more seriously than Hello World in some common languages. I've created a web app in Ruby on Rails for training purposes but now I'd like to do the same thing with a Rails API. However I don't quite understand the concept and I don't know how to word the questions I have.
The web app approach was pretty straight forward. I used MVC pattern where controllers took the biggest hit to manipulate data and feed instance variables to the embedded ruby templates where some kind of front end framework (I used bootstrap) was used to make everything look alright.

Now my understanding is that using an API first approach (or a BaaS approach) means creating a RESTful API that responds to HTTP requests with a JSON message. What I don't understand is how is this API used by an application. For example when creating another web app but this time wanting to use the API, are the API and the application two different projects? How do I make API calls anyway? I want to create the entire application in rails/coffeescript. What is this pattern/architecture called? I still need to create a rails "backend" (in essence controllers) that makes calls to the API that I've created and maps responses to ruby objects to be show in the front end?

I've used external APIs before where I just need a URL and some kind of gem to create the request. I've never used "local" or self-made APIs before. Does the API exist in the same project as the code used to call the API and the rest of the front end etc?

Thanks

I just bought a new rig and it made me ask myself a few general questions I never considered before. Hopefully this won't sound too techsupporty.

1) If my system shows 32 gb installed ram (24 usable) is this related to the ram or is this normal? I might have to move it around or clean it, but I've been too lazy to open it up.

2) Is 67C max temp on the CPU too much considering that it's winter (still pretty warm inside my room though, at least 21C )? CPU is AMD FX-8350.

3) Open Hardware Monitor shows three fans on my motherboard, marked Fan #1, #3, #4. Is there a problem with a fan that's supposed to show up as #2? There are two giant fans at the bottom of the case which I've never seen functioning. I just assumed they activated when needed, but maybe I'm wrong.

Overclocking isn't necessarily going to give you a huge boost to FPS, especially considering most games are much more bottlenecked by the GPU than CPU anyway.

I have noticed small improvements in Dolphin after overclocking an old processor though, so emulators can be a good reason to do it if you don't want to upgrade.

Dunno about hardware, but CSGO is a mess, it's a load of years worth of addons over a limited engine that uses resources inefficiently. I doubt it dude

Anyway I just went babbling freestyle in wordpad for 60 seconds and I got roughly 300cpm, compared to 220 in online tests

So I was right assuming I scored lower than I could, whatever.

Is there any Music Player for Android that shows the cover art for each file correctly in folder view?
I've tried several Players and none seems to address this.
PlayerPro for example reads the cover of the first file and applies it to all tracks. Pretty annoying behavior if you commonly deal with collections of random tracks in various directories.

i scripted the cropping of these ones to save some time

you could automate everything i'm doing, just;
- resize the browser window to display the unscaled images
- run a script which does right-click-save on the canvas, then clicks next page, waits a bit for it to load, then repeats
- crop the results out with a script that just runs imagemagick (i did this for the second one)
- compress the results, optionally (i did this, just lossless optimization, though)

Is there a decent way to have a batch file pause and wait for a command in to nircmd to finish before continuing? For some reason it likes to just trigger it on its own thread and then continue on, sometimes fucking things up because it didn't wait long enough for things to process. I could just put a timeout but that's not satisfying.

Recently I got an external HDD for my windows 10 laptop to store torrented files. However since I moved the files from my laptop's HDD to the external HDD my torrent client (utorrent) does not seed them. It only seeds files that are in local storage. It reads "Error: Files missing from job. Please recheck." or "Error: The system cannot find the path specified." How can I set it so that I can seed files that are in my external HDD?

sort of, linux will boot from sd card and allow you to use your ssd. use unetbooting and a distro of your choice. i reccomend ubuntu debian or tailsos. Puppy is also good depending how old you machine is, but since it has an ssd, 2012 at the earlierst

Guys, I was working on building a site for the last 2 weeks and when I woke up this morning, most of the css had gone to shit.

Some of the css is still being pulled, but most of it is not. It's almost as if somebody went through and deleted half of the style sheet even though I can still see the non-represented css in there. What the hell happened? What do I do? I was supposed to present this site to my employer by tomorrow for a huge promotion.
>>
>>57999759
okey, will it then be as if the sd card is my main storage? say I install or download something, will it end up on the sd card?
>>
>>57999708
Yes, but which one specifically? It's hard to know which ones are good or bad if I have no knowledge on the subject.
>>
>>57999809
yes, \you can still use it as a usb drive too. Additionally you can move stuff to your ssd, its basically as if sd = c drive, ssd = whatever drive. you can specify the download path too, to use the ssd.

This is actually super useful for data recovery, and is why just a password tends to be useless.

If it doesnt boot change the boot order from bios, figure out how to change it yourself

How do you tell if a keyboard is shit? I want a decent wireless/mouse thing for when I am in bed, and I've always wanted a backlit keyboard so I found these two things on amazon:

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01AUO3UYS/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?smid=A2IJXZ1FD77INR&psc=1

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00ORFW2UA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A15CBTP5BTSNTZ&psc=1

I am super less concerned about the wireless one as it's just something quick and dirty, but I want it to be full size.

The backlit one would be my main keyboard though, I don't want it to be a waste.

Also if I add a third monitor to my setup, is that going to cause my computer to explode? Especially while doing the vidya gamin?

I'm going to build a PC and I was wondering if I will need any kind of drivers beforehand, since I don't have an optical drive for the CD that came with the motherboard

Yes, you can connect to the internet without any drivers assuming you are plugged in by ethernet.

You may not be able to connect with a wireless adapter if that needs drivers though.
