I've been setting up CWM, and whenever I close the laptop lid, the window manager is frozen when I open it up again. I can still type in a terminal if it was open, but I cant move anything, invoke the wms menu by clicking the desktop, etc. This only happens when the lid has been shut for a while, but it happens very reliably with cwm, only some of the time with openbox.

Arch because bleeding edge mpv.
>>

Absolutely anything. Every single distro can easily compile the latest mpv version. Debian-based distros have repos with the latest mpv nightlies, while Arch-based distros can automatically compile it using the AUR mpv-git. However any other distro can basically download mpv-build and run that so it's not really a difference.

Why even use grsec if you won't do hardened compiling?
Your question doesn't even matter on a binary distro, just do whatever makes you feel secure since that's the standard you are using if you are fine with a binary distro and somehow "need" grsec.
>>
>>57958090
>slackware is somehow easier than gentoo or arch
>arch and gentoo are considered "difficult" for some reason
no...
>>
>>57958031
It's not really. Once you wrap your head around everything it's a piece of cake. And Fedora is a good choice. Stick with it.
>>
Slackware, arch and gentoo aren't difficult to use. I've used all 3. On arch now for convenience. Arch is the "easier" of the 3, only from convenience's view. Gentoo is "hardest" only because it's package system is more complicated to use. But it's still not that hard.

People must be really stupid if they can't even install GNU/Linux. It's easy.
>>
>>57958095
Id have to switch to something like ubuntu to do a hardened compile right? I dont mind that at all, just trying new stuff. What else could i do in a custom compile thatd add security? Just a place to start would be great
>>
>>57958176
>Gentoo is "hardest" only because it's package system is more complicated to use.
By no means is it complicated to use.
Wouldn't slackware be the "hardest" since you have to do most of the stuff a package manager does manually?
>>57958188
I don't know if this is a joke, but you can't really do system-wide hardened compiling on binary distros.
And why did you even think ubuntu and arch are somehow different in this regard? You want something like gentoo if you want grsec + hardened gcc + hardened compilation for every single package. Basically look into hardened gentoo.
>>
>>57958234
Slackware is easy because it has most of the libraries already installed, so there actually isn't much to be manually done. You just run a slackbuild and you have your software, or install it from git. 9 times out of 10 you already have the dependencies. The most annoying thing to install is ffmpeg. Everything else is just like using AUR.
>>
>>57958151
it better be, I fucked up my windows install so that it isn't detected as an operating system on boot when I tried to make a partition for arch

Is there any normal recovery method for this,
>>
>>57958234
Dont worry, im retarded when it comes to linux. Asking my first questions about this. What determines a distro as binary or not? Ill search around with gentoo.
>>
>>57958285

Are you sure it's still there?

The first thing I would do is
sudo update grub
and reboot to see if it shows up in grub on reboot.

If that isn't it maybe try os-prober.

Or you could just forget about Windows and reinstall using the entire disk. You will be much happier.

>>
>>57958367
Do you really think you need something like grsec if you don't know that? Get a normal distro first, fuck around with it for a while and then install hardened gentoo.
Also look up what compilation even is, i'm sure there are videos explaining that.

Any distro is fine, but GuixSD (Scheme/Guile) or NixOS (Haskell DSL) are interesting as you can produce reproducible builds in an independent environment (no more virtualenv junk). Can also use it for building docker container specifications, deploying a gagillion servers all identical to each other or install ZeroVM and play around with that kind of restricted container environment.

Control the entire OS through emacs which is what I do (GuixSD) and if you're like me you probably are using emacs for code auditing anyway since Hi-Lock exists. For instance, given a giant blob of J2EE web handler code, I can eyeball one handler, recognize the annotation mapping the method to URL syntax, and then punch in a hi-lock regex to light up similar annotations everywhere in the file, then glance through the whole file looking for color patterns. I can read any of those functions and recognize the code that checks "am I an admin", hi-lock it, and then quickly spot any function mapped to a URL that doesn't check admin credentials.

Org-mode also helps with manual code review so you can bookmark sections, and for billing if you're an appsec contractor (like myself). Magit is also essential, single key revert and tracks the updates of your checkouts for you with an easy UI.

Anyway I can not shill GuixSD enough these days

Ubuntu GNOME comes with a lot of default programs that I never use, like Empathy and Evolution. I don't want to uninstall them, since I might need them in the future (and I've heard that it's generally a bad idea to uninstall things that came with a Linux OS), but I don't want them clogging up my menu. My solution has been to go into /usr/share/applications and change the extension of their .desktop files. But considering how much stuff is in those files... will that break anything?
Also, while I'm at it, how the hell do I change what programs are the default for a file type? I hate having to right-click my videos and hit "Open in mpv" so they don't open in Totem.

I just went into the BIOS to boot into the ISO, and it said Secure Boot was enabled, even though I disabled it as part of the installation (and now every time I boot, it says "booting in insecure mode"). Because that's the window manager theme and you're changing colors for GTK2 programs.

Do not edit GTK themes like that. It will cause inconsistency between GTK2 and GTK3. Find a GTK theme which covers both that you like and then find a window manager theme that you like (Xfwm4).

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Fedora is bloated like most "just werks" distros, of course you have a million packages installed.

The full name option doesn't matter , useradd just appends a comment to the user
useradd -c "Mr.4chan Anonymous" anon

I personally found Slackware to be easier for me to get the shit I wanted working than Antergos. Honestly, most distros are a crapshoot. It all depends on what packages you want and your specific hardware.

So you like software which doesn't allow you to change it, share it, divides the community, spies on it's users and is riddled with NSA backdoors?
>>
>>57973787
I'm using Arch, if it matters.

>>57973787
Guix is pretty cool, especially the package manager. Check out the video on the index page.
>>
>>57973881
I wish it was easier to find people talking about these new kinds of package managers like guix and nix. Mailing lists always seem to be the preferred choice of communications for open source devs, but using email is so annoying and cumbersome.

Do you guys think those package managers actually have a shot at being the future of GNU/Linux? Or are they just a neat concept that'll eventually be lost to time?
>>
>>57973881
educate me on the Guix package manager

Im currently on a really crap computer that has an atom core and using xubuntu rn. Its alright, a little slow but thats to be expected.

However would a different distro like puppy linux or lubuntu be a better choice? Or even tailsos?
>>
>>57974092
why not install lxde and find out?
>>
>>57974132
because im wondering primarily about performance before installing it.
>>
>>57974150
you know you can install lxde on xubuntu, right? don't need to remove xfce or anything, either

the only difference between xubuntu and lubuntu is that one comes with xfce, and the other lxde

Can anybody tell what's wrong with this bash script? It used to work flawlessly, but now won't unzip any files with a space in it. It only looks at the first word, but I swear it didn't use to.

extract() {
if [ -f "$1" ] ; then
case "$1" in
*.tar.bz2) tar xvjf $1 && cd $(basename "$1" .tar.bz2) ;;
*.tar.gz) tar xvzf $1 && cd $(basename "$1" .tar.gz) ;;
*.tar.xz) tar Jxvf $1 && cd $(basename "$1" .tar.xz) ;;
*.bz2) bunzip2 $1 && cd $(basename "$1" /bz2) ;;
*.rar) unrar x $1 && cd $(basename "$1" .rar) ;;
*.gz) gunzip $1 && cd $(basename "$1" .gz) ;;
*.tar) tar xvf $1 && cd $(basename "$1" .tar) ;;
*.tbz2) tar xvjf $1 && cd $(basename "$1" .tbz2) ;;
*.tgz) tar xvzf $1 && cd $(basename "$1" .tgz) ;;
*.zip) 7z x -o"$(basename "$1" .zip)" $1 && cd "$(basename "$1" .zip)" ;;
*.Z) uncompress $1 && cd $(basename "$1" .Z) ;;
*.7z) 7z x -o"$(basename "$1" .zip)" $1 && cd $(basename "$1" .7z) ;;

esac
else
echo "unable to extract '$1'"

Oh, and specifically for .zip. Something with the
-o"$(basename "$1" .zip)"
won't take the entire filename.
>>

you expected it to work, also rename it 'ex' like it was before
