yeah apparently I need third party repos to get anything proprietary. not good, rather have that with as little hassle as possible.

fuck, I wish arch could be a little more stable. everything else just feels incomplete in comparison.

>>57975606
You're looking for gentoo. You can have older packages (not sjwbian-tier old) for the stuff that breaks most often but you can still have the bleeding edge packages for anything you want

I'm trying to get off windows asap. Wanting debian but having problems. First, it seems like you need to already have some linux system to boot from USB for installation. What is up with this? Then I tried unetbootin but it said that it I had hardware that needed proprietary software. Not preferable, but OK. Thing is it wanted me to have the software on some usb or something and install it right then! I was like, uhh. And then I quit out.

Did I do something stupid? Was I on the right track? What about slackware?

no, just change BIOS boot order.

>Then I tried unetbootin but it said that it I had hardware that needed proprietary software.
first time I hear about anything of the sort but if it's a relatively new laptop I wouldn't be fucking surprised.

what are you trying to install this on?

>Was I on the right track? What about slackware?
I wouldn't look at debian or slackware for a windows replacement. the former will frustrate you with its lack of recent software and the latter will put you so far out of your comfort zone you'll probably just give up.

I'm going to get shit for this but I would personally recommend ubuntu.

Also, I partitioned my hard drive but I don't know how to use this free space. Obviously I want to put an OS there but how do I go about this? Will the installer address this? In the debian installer it seemed like it wanted to partition then, but I had done it before.

This is what I gathered from the debian install guide. They were talking about some command which would format the usb correctly.

My computer is lenovo ideapad u530 touch

I actually went to the website for ubuntu just before posting this but was scared by the corporate product feel. That's when I went to look at slackware.

I'm not super concerned with the distro being hard to use when I'm in it, I just want to install something. Preferably more free.

Hi
I have the exact same wifi chip. You have to install this package:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/broadcom-wl/

However if you have grsec enabled you need this https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/broadcom-wl-grsec/

If you are using the -ck patchset in your kernel you want this

Just wrote a script to set random wallpaper from /wg/. You can change the board is it from editing the python script. Change the name of python script to pape.py.
Also in the script you can change interval, and the way wallpaper is it (this one is for gnome 3).

I feel like this has been asked to death, but in palemoon/fire fox how do I just get the KDe file picker to work?

i went into about:config and changed ui.allow.platform.file.picker to both settings. on true it lets me preview one file at a time, on false it shows pic related. forums seem all over the place giving advice on how to fix this.

Pretty cool idea.
Improvement ideas:
- Drop the papes to /tmp/.
- Write the resolution check and the loops also in python and make it a single script.
- Check for more wallpaper setters like feh, so it doesn't rely on gnomes gsettings.

I love Linux, I love the community around it, I love the people who selflessly support it, I love the whole premise of controlling the machine that you use right down to the firmware level

I love GNU & the FSF and all the work that they so tirelessly, thanklessly, persistently, forcefully, commit to, even if I think that sometimes their zealotry is somewhat overbearing they have an incredible commitment to a free society

I also love cheap hardware I can use to knock out code on the go, which is why I bought a Cube i7 Stylus, networking didn't work out of the box on Ubuntu but drivers were on github & pretty easy to compile

This touchscreen does not have drivers
I have looked everywhere

I'm not looking for tech support, I want to write a driver for this motherfucker, I'm decent in C/C++ though I haven't worked on anything major outside of small bugfixes to existing projects, and I've never written (or shit even really thought about) a kernelspace application before but I figure it's time I nutted up and gave something back to the Free & Open Source Software community, even if that something is relatively insignificant and will benefit almost no one outside of a limited range of people with similar hardware.

So how would an amateur programmer go about writing a driver for an unfamiliar device? I'm not even sure where to start

>Many channers call Arch Linux a "meme OS". This is mostly due to the fact that it does have a package manager, however it is very glitchy and most Arch users compile. Furthermore, a large number of users in their community are underage and in a middle school grade level. There have been many criticisms for Arch Linux for not using the GNU coreutils and instead using busybox for its userland. This is mostly a criticism of followers of the Free Software Foundation, and users of Arch Linux (and members of the Open Source community) often refute it by stating that the GNU coreutils are bloated in their coding.

Arch used to be about "do as much as possible without getting in my way" and you had sane defaults and a simple installer.

But the devs stopped caring and make the users do more and more pointless shit and the people who still use Arch eat it up because they believe they learn something by following a step-by-step guide from the wiki.

Most Customizable Distro: Arch Linux

Arch Linux is the best rolling-release distribution out there. Period. Ok, I could be biased because I am an Arch Linux user. However, the reason behind my claim is that Arch excels in many other areas, too, and that’s why I use it as my main operating system.

Arch Linux is a great distro for those who want to learn everything about Linux. Because you have to install everything manually, you learn all the bits and pieces of a Linux-based operating system.

Arch is the most customizable distribution. There is no “Arch” flavor of any DE. All you get is a foundation and you can build whatever distro want, on top of it. For good or for worse, unlike openSUSE or Ubuntu there is no extra patching or integration. You get what upstream developers created. Period.

Arch Linux is also one of the best rolling releases. It’s always updated. Users always run the latest packages, and they can also run pre-released software through unstable repositories.

Arch is also known for having excellent documentation. Arch Wiki is my to-go resource for everything Linux related.

What I like the most about Arch is that is offers almost every package and software that’s available for “any” Linux distribution, thanks to the Arch User Repository, aka AUR.

Recently I loaded into Arch I installed two years ago to try send my .vimrc to buddy.

Just usual I though I can copy/paste it from text editor to web based social network messanger and that's it.

Found out I need to use "=y "+y :%y+ to yank into system clipboard
Found out my vim is compiled without clipboard support so I need to install gvim (and it conflicts with vim so I need to install gvim and uninstall vim)
Found out my installation is two years old and I need sudo pacman -Syu
Found out I have to create
mkdir ~/.gnupg
touch ~/.gnupg/dirmngr_ldapservers.conf
empty file for pacman -Syu to work

Everything is fine at this point, I delivered my vimrc

I rebooted the laptop.

"Your" code isn't your anymore if it's on another system. Unless you believe in bullshit like ip of course in which case you are retarded.
>companies taking it, making it proprietary,
That's fine though and it means the GPL is a more cucked license than BSD. I'll be sure to use BSD if I ever publish any software.

But it doesn't make you a cuckold.

Your not in the sense of property, but in a sense of relatedness, like your children.

When I choose a free license, my goal is that the code for my program is free for everyone. Allowing others to take it and make it proprietary is the opposite of my initial goal.

You're not any less of a cuck just because the GPL forces them to grant sloppy seconds to everyone.

>>57983450
Nope, it has no relation to you if it's being used in other systems, especially if modified by another entity.
This of course assumes you don't believe in bullshit like ip. Do you believe in it?
>>57983470
You are contradicting yourself, how can you possibly be free if you can't do whatever you want with that piece of code?
The proprietary version of your code isn't your code, it's a modified and relicensed program based on your code. If you can't do whatever you want with a piece of code you aren't free, simple as that.

You wouldn't want your adult son to do drugs even if you can't legally stop him. If a license like the gpl prevents (legally, mind you) your code for being used to abuse users, than that's at least acceptable compromise (assuming I buy the nonexistence of ip, which I'm not convinced about) from an utilitarian standpoint.
>>

It doesn't
>>
>>57983645
Your entire argument implies belief in ip. Which you haven't answered by the way, where do you stand on this issue?
If I transfer some code to you and you run it on your system it isn't my code anymore. It stops being my code once it reaches something physically owned by you.
>>57983660
I wouldn't want him to and I would try to influence him but I would have no right to stop him from doing so.
Changing code in any way can't possibly be defined as "abuse". If you think the gpl has anything to do with freedom you are being contradictory and inconsistent.

If it's like this guy says >>57983698 you literally have no point here, the gpl already does what it should do if it is even remotely related to freedom.
>>
>>57983738
>Changing code in any way can't possibly be defined as "abuse".
Changing it an licensing under a proprietary license abuses the users freedom. And the code one supplied is being used as an instrument for that oppression.
>>
>>57983779
This assumes it will have any users or it will have more than one user (the creator of it)
In no way does my freedom get "abused" if I license and run my own software under a proprietary license.

Also your freedom can't be abused if you chose to install it willingly and knowing that you can't see the source code. Your privacy might and probably will get abused, but anything that happens as a result of you installing proprietary software is your own responsibility and is a result of your own retardation.

You are using some kind of retarded definition of freedom where doing things to items you own is considered "unfree"

Answer this by the way - do you believe in IP?
>>
>>57983858
>Answer this by the way - do you believe in IP?
Yes. Ip is abused but one has a small right to ones work (e.g. someone shouldn't be able to take credit for your work anymore than they're able to distribute malicious things under your name). In short term (~2-5 years) one deserves remuneration from innovation one comes up with to incentivize innovation. It's a restriction of freedom carefully made to pay for the costs of innovation. Right now it's been perverted to hell, and the name is misleading anyway, but the general idea is legitimate.
>Also your freedom can't be abused if you chose to install it willingly
Even if I choose to not run proprietary software, I can still be pressured in many ways to do so, most obviously as a job prerequisite. If such license was considered unethical an harmful, to the extent of precluding its usage with copyleft, we could have made the companies producing them compromise and release it under better terms. So we do have a ethical need to oppose it.
>>
>>57983779
>oppression

>>
>>57983996
I'm not talking about it being abused. The concept itself is utterly retarded.
>(e.g. someone shouldn't be able to take credit for your work anymore than they're able to distribute malicious things under your name).
Yes, that would be fraud. Nothing to with IP.
>It's a restriction of freedom
Then it's literal shit with no reason to exist.
>but the general idea is legitimate.
No, the idea of you owning an "idea" is literally retarded.
You don't infringe on anyone "intellectual property" by reproducing the exact vibrations of their vocal cords while they're whistling, they don't own the sound or the melody that comes out of them.
You can't own data or thoughts, you can only own physical manifestations of them, as in you don't own a program but you own the thing it runs on.
>I can still be pressured in many ways to do so, most obviously as a job prerequisite.
So your own choice? Leave the job then if this is such a problem to you. If you don't then you value the job more than not running any proprietary software, fair enough. Which is your own personal choice, why should everyone else be forced to not use proprietary software for you not to be "pressured" into using it?
It isn't unethical by itself and you haven't done anything to prove the opposite yet.
>to the extent of precluding its usage with copyleft,
>I believe in freedom but I think you should be prohibited from doing something with things you own"
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
>>
>>57984151
>I believe in freedom but I think you should be prohibited from doing something with things you own"
Yes. In order to maximize the amount of freedom, restrictions of freedom are sometimes necessary, there are such things as indirect effects. I don't see what's so unusual about this.
>No, the idea of you owning an "idea" is literally retarded.
This is why I said the name is misleading. Maybe it would be better to call it something else? It's still a good mechanism for paying for the cost of research. (By the way this is also the reason I think researches at universities have much less rights to ip, they're already payed for it with taxes)
>>
>>57984283
>In order to maximize the amount of freedom, restrictions of freedom are sometimes necessary,
No, how can you not see this as being contradictory? You are using some retarded definition if you think this is somehow possible.
Not being allowed to kill people isn't an imposition on your freedom since you didn't have that right to begin with.
>This is why I said the name is misleading. Maybe it would be better to call it something else?
It's the perfect name since the concept claims you have a right to "intellectual property" when such a thing doesn't even exist. You have a right to own property, you don't have a right to own thoughts. IP implies you literally own other people's brains if you think of something first and then someone thinks of the exact same thing.
>It's still a good mechanism for paying for the cost of research.
It's not though, it just slows down any possible new research which might have been done because you have to pay royalties
>>
>>57984350
>It's not though, it just slows down any possible new research which might have been done because you have to pay royalties
Before patents, the usual way about this was by trade secrets, and that could slow research for decades. It's stated purpose is the acceleration of research. If it fails at this (it might, but I would need to see this with empirical research) then I would consider it harmful.
>No, how can you not see this as being contradictory? You are using some retarded definition if you think this is somehow possible.
I don't see the problem, honest. Seems like a standard game theoretic scenario.
>>
>>57984465
>I don't see the problem, honest. Seems like a standard game theoretic scenario.
If you think maximizing x is preferable you can't possibly think that restricting x is an acceptable scenario. It's a contradiction since you are literally saying one thing and then doing the exact opposite.
>and that could slow research for decades
Same with ip, it's obvious that having to pay for "intellectual property" will slow down or even make certain research impossible.
> If it fails at this (it might, but I would need to see this with empirical research
The concept itself is utterly retarded, you can disprove it in your own head.
I hope you don't think going around and measuring circles to empirically research and prove that pi has the value it has is something worth doing.
>>
>>57984580
>The concept itself is utterly retarded
I don't think so. So
>, you can disprove it in your own head.
I'm not convinced.
>Same with ip, it's obvious that having to pay for "intellectual property" will slow down or even make certain research impossible.
Yes. This is why I'm against the current terms. Copyright is something like the life of the author plus 70 years (and empirical research shows there was no gain from it, which I consider obvious but it's the honest way to proceed) So I consider the current terms harmful. Not the general idea obviously.
>It's a contradiction since you are literally saying one thing and then doing the exact opposite.
It seems we're not understanding each other,
if I forbid you from imprisoning bob, that's a restriction of freedom which has indirect consequence (bob's freedom) and is overall good.
This scenario is a bit contrived as you have nothing to gain from imprisoning bob and bob is a clear loser, but in standard game theoretic scenarios involving cooperation like the prisoner dilemma, the wrong incentives can make respectful and well intentioned parties act against their best interest. Changing the incentives by introducing restrictions is fairly pedestrian in such situations.
>>
>>57984768
If the examples in my previous posts about the implications of ip as a concept sound completely logical and rational to you then you have some problems.
>Not the general idea obviously.
So the general idea of you owning something nonexistent is fine?

Your example presupposes that I have a right to imprison bob, which I don't. Which then means you haven't restricted anything since I did not have a right to go around and imprison or kill people in the first place.
>>
>>57984872
>So the general idea of you owning something nonexistent is fine?
What do you mean nonexistent? it currently exists and it's enforced. Do you mean artificial? I don't put much stock in "natural rights" I'm an utilitarian.
Do you mean it shouldn't exist? Why?
So if it works for it's stated purpose I don't mind if it's artificial. Aside from the name being misleading I don't see what you've said against it. We could call it "the scheme for the incentivation of research" or CIR for short (I suck at names), the name is only important when it's misunderstood. Now the name has been misunderstood by the people in charge of setting the terms, so I agree that coming with a better name is probably important.
>Your example presupposes that I have a right to imprison bob
Say then, that you would imprison bob with his sayso (I'm not sure if that's legal, I think it is). Why would bob agree to that? You should probably do some reading on the prisoner's dilemma, that's the part of the picture you've given me the impression of missing.
