I've started using fedora for the first time ever in my 7 years of linux and I'm loving it. After Ubuntu, then Debian, then Arch, then Gentoo, then Debian again, and now to Fedora everything just seems to work. yum/dnf works as well as apt, the default programs pull my email/calendar into gnome and its notifications nicely, bluetooth JUST WORKS, and everything has sane defaults. The installer was quicker than any other distro I've installed, default disk mounting is easy to manage, and my t420 has never run a distro better.

I've installed i3 in case I need to do some productive work with a workflow and environment I'm used to, but I'm going to try this gnome thing for a bit. Anyone else using fedora and have any tips or tricks they've learned during their time using it?

Look through the ncmpcpp man page and see where an ncmpcpp configuration file should be and what should be in it. I believe there is a setting in that config file to set your library location

I just finally got a job involving Linux after using it on my machines for 5 years. Thanks in part to /g/ although I rarely visit anymore.

I have a background in infosec academically, then I switched to computer engineering because hardware attacks intrigued me the most. I have been repairing laptops/desktops since I was a teenager, and mobile devices for the last 3 years. I took intro to linux but it was slow so I dropped it, taught myself to program and use bash well, and have been using it daily ever since. I also have ran a few botservers and made a few websites.

My current machine is a samsung chromebook running seaBIOS and gallium os. I have one of the early intel atom models with ethernet, displayport, and upgradeable RAM/mSATA SSD ( so 8GB / 500GB). I also have many remote servers, mostly using debian.

Most of what I'm working on now applies my networking skills as well as acquiring a palette for common webserver issues. I have to handle 6 chats/tickets/calls an hour. The pay is low but pays the bills with a little extra.

I want to get really good at this though. I have a harder time focusing on this stuff at work compared to when im curious at 3am. I work with alot of smart people but try not to rely on them, but escalate as needed.

Any tips for a webhost nub?
>>

i have 3 VPS including one my company supplied me with.

I'm hosting my shops and public sites on their server because its nice seeing the servers from the webhost end and knowing right away when theyre down or damaged.

I keep my personal stuff like projects and logs on my server, and use the third as a vpn / proxy server for connecting to my seedbox.

>>57954583
It has scripts like wifi-menu where as with gentoo you need to manually configure wpa_supplicant, for example. It's also a lot faster to install. 45 minutes or so for arch (faster for a non-beginner, 15-20 minutes), several hours for gentoo due to the initial emerge -auDN world.

isn't gentoo a meme? why would you compile every program of your system? when you're ready compiling, the program already got a new update and you're compiling infinitly
>>

It's not as bad as it sounds. The initial install can be frustarting, but updating with emerge is a breeze and doesn't take as long as you'd expect as long as you do it often. Do it everyday or two so they don't add up. Also there's firefox-bin so you don't have to compile that.

Copy a working kernel config to .config in the kernel directory. Like the one in /boot/ of your livecd or current running kernel. Then make localyesconfig. >>57954968
yes. what sound even remotely surprising about that? why would you want to compile 10 packages and not everything else? especially if you care about security, it would be idiotic to compile 10 packages with hardened gcc and not the rest.
but you have every single package with your particular use flags, most of which are automatically set by your profile. on other distros you literally get all of them. why the fuck would you want gtk3 support in a kde package if you don't use it, why the fuck would you want packages with systemd, bluetooth etc support if you're not using it, and so on.

show me how you would "script" this without making it more convoluted and harder to maintain than gentoo - setting a hardened gcc profile (you would have to set everything that goes into doing that manually), recompiling your toolchain, compiling every single package on your system with your now hardened toolchain
do this in less than 3 commands.

>>57955047
nope, most of the work is done by your profile. best practice is having a small number of useflags set globally in your make.conf.

There's a lot of compiler fighting going on right now. It's not what should be happening.

Anon that's a pretty fussy line among performance programmers anyway. If you find an issue with the code generation you can either mess about with your code to make it generate what you want (Common example would be to pull out if statements out of loops or save the value in local variables, which they all still frequently mess up) or you could look at the compiler and fix the issue, and every other instance of these issues you'd have.

I've done it myself and I don't consider myself a particularly expert compiler person.

Obviously untrue. It's either very little effort or a lot of effort. But it's never no effort. Even if automatic. And beyond that you may find changes that you dislike, which certainly have to be accounted for as an effort in updating as you'd have to roll back or deal with it.

Stop using feh.

If you need an image viewer and wallpaper setter, use imagemagick. Alpha males use mpv and enjoy animated gifs, webms etc.

There is literally no need to install additional useless software like feh.

Is Ubuntu (or some Ubuntu flavor) my best choice if I'm looking for a somewhat stable webdev machine and I don't know A LOT about Linux?

I know my way around the terminal and shit, but I feel I'm not ready for a full blown tiling WM and using only CLI software.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask...

I want a Libreboot system, though I'm unsure of how to go about getting it. I don't have hardware/low level firmware experience beyond building a desktop, fixing a laptop or two, and configuring GRUB from an installed operating system. Will hardware flashing be difficult? Should I just buy a laptop with Libreboot preinstalled? They're only like $200 on ebay. And if I fuck up the Libreboot installation can I flash the stock BIOS and still have a usable PC? I have a Thinkpad T400 btw.

Also why is RMS such an autistic sperg? Video related. He just flings his spaghetti everywhere.

Ubuntu is always the best choice for learning the whole thing. Also, you can install any WM like i3 in Ubuntu and switch to it when you login. It also doesn't prevent you from using and learning the shell.

if you did a speech in english and then was asked to do it again in spanish, you would at least lose some shit.

Stop wasting space and just slit your wrists.

>>57956397
From IntelME. It's a micro controller that's inside of the CPU but separate from it. It can send and receive network packets which is twice as scary knowing that it also has full TCP/IP stack and memory access. It can turn your PC on and off. I want it disabled. Share your advice or stuff a sock in it, dickhead.

nope, i don't expect an award for being able to function at a basic level. RMS might want one though for being able to somehow restrain himself from masturbating and shitting himself on scene.
>>57956457
Why would he stop wasting space if he slits his wrists? Cremation isn't very popular so you would have to wait for a long time before he actually starts decomposing and taking up considerably less space

ever heard of amd, kid?

Yes. It's actually worse in many ways in regards to user freedoms. AMD products are also just shit performance wise.
