I like GNOME quite a bit, and I'm thinking of going with Ubuntu GNOME as my first distro, but I also want to give XFCE a chance. Problem is, it looks and works ugly out of the box on Xubuntu. How do I make it not awful?

I know, but I at least wanted to give it a fair chance. After all, there's the possibility that I'll like it even better than GNOME.

>Guix
Anybody Guix here?

It's NixOS but using Scheme(guile) instead of that weirdo Haskell-derived DSL NixOS uses so this means you can drive your whole operating system from emacs in a simple functional language(scheme). This has massive advantages especially if you're a dev making docker containers and other things you need to deploy exactly as is across eleventy billion servers.

Essentially instead of piles of programs and daemons that all require specific config files you have one scheme file that configures and deploys your system. You can super-abstract this like a lightswitch where you push a button and bam! dozens of servers deployed all identical to each other that will never have any production updating issues.

This is true. IntelME has full TCP/IP stack and memory access and shares flash with the BIOS. It operates totally independently of the main CPU and is actually really frightening. Glad I'm Librebooted.
>You know very well X86 is hostile towards anything but commercialized proprietary software

>>

Guix can also just be your package manager for Gentoo, you drop in some binaries and then can scheme your system configuration.

Since you use Gentoo, it might be easier to roll Exherbo on your laptop using their package manager completely schemed with Guix but only if you want rollbacks and dependability. Exherbo is all ex Gentoo devs
>>
>>57937736
>But what's a realistic alternative to the x86 arch?
of course, one doesn't exists. I just feel like x86 is cornering free users more and more every generation. PC architectures I guess are just too expensive with R&D and hours for a functioning free alternative. I suppose that's why Talos failed

>>57938236
it's also because they are trying to fit a newly release architecture with server budgets in mind into a workstation that it failed. Even if they raised the money it would be very difficult to get a userland going because development for a relatively obscure platform with free software would be a mess.

The grand reason GNU/Linux flourished is because there weren't too many architectures that fragmented the dev community so a lot of manhours went into x86

Power8 is just too obscure. It needs to commercially scale to workstation to even become relevant and even then it would still have trouble attracting devs

That's my take, maybe someone with a more technical background can fill in the details and corrections

>>
>>57941459
Honestly I'm not really sure what you're asking here.
As for tab completion, why don't you just try it? Are you not on a Linux machine right now?
Basically as long as you type enough of a files name so that it can be uniquely identified in your current directory and then hit the Tab key it will fill in the rest of the files name, including any escape characters. So if that "tvshow.s01e01..." file you have is the only one that starts with "t" for example then you could just type t, hit tab, and that's it

GNU/Linux rookie here. Want to install some drivers for an ethernet adapter I got. Readme says to extract the tar.gz file using a command and tells me that I can use something called modprobe to mount the driver with another command.

>>
>>57943115
tar.gz is a simple archive format like zip, just extract it
the modprobe command loads the driver into the kernel
read up both things (man helps)
>>
>>57943115
You need the driver to be loaded as a module into your kernel for it to work. modprobe does exactly that.
Extract your tar.gz and do modprobe ath9k or the name of the module you're trying to load

http://pastebin.com/rPkmnCrj

These were the directions in the readme. I just extracted the file with a few clicks and now I have the .ko file and I'm not sure exactly what to do with it or how to reference it in the terminal with the modprobe command.

No, cd means change directory, basically the same as clicking on a folder in your file manager.

make
sudo make install

No. Choosing a distro based on your favorite environment is a good way to go. Package managers and repos and etc are irrelevant to me. Again 'my opinion'

KDE your favorite DE?
openSUSE has the best KDE experience

GNOME?
Fedora has the best GNOME integration hands down

Arch is a good choice because why would you want to install some distro that comes with another DE?

I'm trying to install Ubuntu GNOME as a dual-boot alongside Windows 10. In Windows 10, Disk Management listed my partitions in the following order:
>260MB, 100% free EFI system partition
>371.85GB, 35% free NTFS C:
>499MB, 100% free Recovery partition
>558.91GB, 100% free NTFS D:

I want Ubuntu GNOME to go on the D: partition. Is that what pic related is showing me? If so, why is there a divider? I'm guessing that the part on the right is the Ubuntu GNOME installation, and the part on the left is my personal files (like my home folder and stuff). In that case, how much space does the Ubuntu GNOME installation need? What should I do? I understand that this is probably a very stupid question, but I don't want to have any uncertainty at all. After all, if I didn't need Windows anymore, I wouldn't be dual-booting, and I don't want to risk destroying it.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>what is the best linux distro for gaming?
a lot of people says ubuntu and steamOS are the distro to go because they are officially supported.
I didn't tried them so I can't tell, but using a bleeding edge distribution might be a better idea. When I bought the talos principle few months ago it runned like shit and had to lower the settings to the minimum. In just a few months I can play it with everything set to high.

Maybe it would be the same with ubuntu or fedora or whatever the distribution, but my experience is that I saw great improvement all this year with a bleeding edge distribution.

Now the problem with /fglt/ is that once you say arch, gentoo or debian testing it will result in an endless shitposting.

I finally got everything working just fine on my little server using quickbox.io but it feels bloated as shit since I'm using ubuntu (desktop) an stuff

to try to unbloat it a little I just did sudo apt-get purge ubuntu-desktop + sudo apt-get autoremove I wonder if I will break anything

There is any better (easy) alternative to quickbox?

Should I just use ubuntu server or I will notice no difference?
>>
>>57945615
why you didn't went with ubuntu server in the first place ? or with another distribution more suited for servers ?
>>
>>57945634
It was my first time I didn't even know ubuntu server was a thing and quickbox need ubuntu or debian and looks like debian fails a lot with it
>>
i'm going to install debian
But I have over 100GB of ripped music on my harddrive
I have two hard disk. One with windows and the other one with some random data
How should i manage the instalation to have debian and my music?
>>
>>57945614
>debian testing
people should stop installing testing
stable is good for stable servers or complete newcomers, unstable for the average desktop user
>>
So I'm back. I deleted the D: partition, and according to the instructions in https://askubuntu.com/questions/343268/how-to-use-manual-partitioning-during-installation, I plan to use the free space as follows:
>20000MB ext4 /
>600122-24096MB ext4 /home
>4096 swap area
>Note that there usually is an existing EFI System Partition (short ESP, efi in the screenshot), that the installer will automatically detect and mount to install EFI loaders and programs.
Am I good to go, or is this going to royally screw something up?

should i go with fedora instead of debian?

What do I have to consider when I want to install Debian? Is the package situation really that bad?
Does WiFi and audio work out of the box?

For native programs there is firejail, not sure if it also works for WINE stuff.
>>
>>57946101
>Is the package situation really that bad?
Nah, just use aptitude instead of apt, it helps solving problems when you fuck something up.
>>57946101
>Does WiFi and audio work out of the box?
Depends on your hardware, if you need a nonfree driver for your wifi, you just need to enable the nonfree repo and install your driver, that's it.
In case you're lazy, just go with Ubuntu.

You could use a firejail.
Or better yet chroot.
Or do like me.
I have mSATA SSD with windows on it and I use it when I want to play games.
>>
>>57946470
Different guy, using Ubuntu. Been using apt - what exactly makes aptitude better?
>>
>>57946521
I'm using apt too, but I think aptitude is good for noobs because it provides friendly [y/n] solutions, while apt just prints an error message and the user needs to solve the problem manually.
>>
should I learn bash or zsh for scipting?
>>
>>57946619
First learn bash, then learn POSIX sh, then, if you want, learn something else. POSIX shell scripts > every other shell scripting language, because of portability, which is useful when you switch systems or want to share your scripts. A POSIX compatible shell script will run in most shells, while a script with bash, zsh or fish-only elements only works on the specific shell.

Make the free space ext4 and make the mount point / and don't touch anything else and you're good.

WINE is fine. A malicious executable for Windows can't do anything to Linux.
>>
>>57946711
Sorry but you're completly wrong.

I'm new as shit to Linux and I know the sticky says that /g/ isn't for personal tech support ... but how the fuck do I install Linux as dual boot without needing an external Hard Drive to boot from. I just want to launch my PC and choose which OS to use.
I managed this a few years ago on a laptop, but I can't remember how and then the motherboard died.
>>
>>57946290
How does "friendly" stop me from doing that? Is it physically compelling me to do so? I am I contractually obliged to do so when I'm using this site? Is there anything that states I can't go against whatever notion of "friendly" you have dreamt up in your head? As far as I'm aware I didn't sign anything when making my first post in this thread.

Don't even consider posting this bullshit if you can't answer all of this.
>>
>>57946290
You are fucking retarded, just saw the second part.
Who defines "useful" here? How can you possibly know if someone is "useful" when he doesn't have an account? What is the objective measure of "useful" that every single poster here has agreed to? I assume I missed some kind of registration process which explains the terms and asks me for my agreement if I want to post here.

And how can you stop me from being unfriendly if I didn't sign a contract with you and I'm not breaking 4chan rules?
Please take your retarded bullshit to some other site, reddit.com would be a good choice for someone like you.
>>
>>57946726
Do people actually create viruses intended to infect linux through wine? Otherwise wouldn't closing wine kill it?

Opinions about openSUSE Tumbleweed?
>>
>>57946735
It's really brainless on most "user friendly" linux distros. They do everything for you.

Filesystems on disk use something called partitions. Even windows uses partitions, and in fact a lot of computers will come preinstalled with an extra partition on the disk for system restores or some crap.

One partition usually, very tiny, houses the bootloader that fires up the OS. If the bootloader is configured for multiple OSs and knows which partition they reside on then you can dual boot.

All you need is to create extra space on your harddrive to create a new partition, install the distro on it and overwrite the windows bootloader to GRUB which will let you choose which OS to boot.

But like I said all of this is pretty much done for you on distros like Ubuntu and Manjaro I think, and you'll get a chance during the install to specify how much you want to shrink your windows partition by to make space.
>>
>>57946869
I haven't agreed to that though. Does posting here require signing a contract stating that I will be friendly?
If not, fuck off.
You still haven't answered a single question.
>>
>>57946735
There are lots of great guides online to do this.

Essentially you need to shrink a volume from disk management in Windows. Boot into a live usb and install the distro onto the partition you created. Most installers will configure grub for you so that when you boot up you will be able to select what you want to boot.
>>
>>57946711
Yes, it can.
I've been doing WINE and malware research because I'm sick of /g/ contradicting opinions.
wait for it in next BH.
>>
>>57946979
I'm pretty sure when people say it can't do anything what they mean is it is extremely unlikely that you're going to run into anything Linux specific while running WINE applications.

Which means no privilege escalation, and only windows specific infections (which can't be run without you starting up wine again anyway)

On the other hand, if some evil mastermind gets you to run a windows application knowing that you'll use WINE and hides Linux specific malware inside it then sure, maybe you'll be vulnerable.
>>
>>57947050
>I'm pretty sure when people say it can't do anything what they mean is it is extremely unlikely that you're going to run into anything Linux specific while running WINE applications.
Not necessarily.
Try running MEMEZ under WINE.
Or any malware that overwrites your MBR.
>>
>>57947116
So WINE will interpret syscalls or whatever to linux but how does it get root access? I've never given WINE root access.
>>
>>57947050
On a standard wine installation the home dir of the user gets symlinked to the windows appropriate, so any mlaware nuking that will be able to really hurt your system.
>>
>>57947153
It doesn't need root access.
Try it.
>>
>>57947187
Yeah, but how much malware out there even "nukes" anything? They don't just fuck with you for fun, most malware serves a malicious purpose that benefits from you not even knowing you've been infected.
It's just going to do what it does on windows, install itself into the locations for autostart on windows (which will be inside the wine directory) or add shit to your registry (which is still contained in wine).
Say it goes looking for executables in your home folder to infect, is it even going to detect Linux executables as valid targets?

Have you ever been infected with malware that just randomly does shit to your computer to fuck with you with no real purpose? Because I remember back in the days when I was still using windows, going to shady porn sites and getting infected, and I never came across anything like that.
>>
>>57947314
The point is that wine is not a security-layer.
How likely or unlikely an infection would be is a whole different question, and most malware targets pebkacs anyway (and I suppose if you're here you'd be above that level of incompetence)
>>
>>57947314
A simple malware that delete your partition tablet is more than enough.
>>
I want to install openSUSE.
Will my WiFi and audio and my second GPU work out of the box?
