what's the best way to wipe a HDD?

I currently have an old PC with a 500gb HDD that I would like to put into my newer PC as a third storage drive, but it also has windows on it. I've backed up everything I want from it so i'm ok to wipe the whole thing.

Can I just put it straight into my new PC and wipe it on this (i'm worried it might have viruses on it though) or use some program to wipe (maybe from booting with USB drive?)
>>
>>57748032
Have a Linux machine or live CD?
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX bs=4M

Replace sdX with whatever device your disk shows up as. You can use /dev/random or /dev/urandom if you want to use random bytes instead of just zeros, but zeros are close enough for government work and a whole lot faster.
>>
pretty stupid question here, but
would I encounter any problems at all by using a HDD through SATA -> USB ? Just bought a WD Blue to be used for a future build, but I want to use it to transfer data from my laptop for now. > really dont want to fuck it up

I bought a new monitor today and sometimes it like turns off/restarts for like 3 seconds, basically turns black and I think the activity led turns off for that moment
It's connected through DVI, because there wasn't a DP cable with it, I will buy it in upcoming days, could that be the problem or what ?
>>
>>57748358
it will work fine lmao dont even worry about it
it will just be slower due to the USB bottlenecking
you could also plug in the sata directly in the motherboard if you want higher transfer speed, you dont have to fix the HDD into the PC for that, just leave the case open while u copy stuff or whatever
>>57748533
make sure the power cable for the monitor is plugged in properly
same for the DVI cable

the other router is somewhat expensive, around $100. used it in my last apartment, got the same or better ping than another computer which was wired. it supports openwrt if that makes a difference

what is this called? so i can google it? tried "bridging" but that seemed to be something else.

or can just plug it into a wired connection and disable the wireless on the modem?

Thats pretty much the plan. You will probably need to tell to the router to use the modem as a source of internet though.

It so happens that my monitor does not carry USB through DP, but is that all on monitor or does DP version has to do something with it, I know mine is 1.2 on the monitor, the same on the GPU, and I'm not sure what version the cable is itself
I know the newest DP is 1.4 ?

Framerates are sometimes in ratio of 1001. Like 24000/1001.
Why 1001?

I heard that it could either be to reduce resonance in electronics, I also heard it could be due the the absence of a progressive frame before a key frame. I try to google it but google is not my friend. So what is the real reason?
>>
>>57749977
It is supported on 1.2 and up, not sure if its an optional spec
The manufacturer may have just decided to have separate cables so even if you had an older displayport device you could still hook up the USB ports.

Thinking about getting a recliner, swivel lounge type chair for gaming at my PC

Kind of like pic. Thoughts? Is it a bad idea or what?
>>
>>57749963
you're confusing the meaning behind the two values

your mics being rated for "16KHz" is referring to their maximum response frequency
and the "44.1KHz" is referring to the DAC (sound hardware) sampling frequency

these do not need to match, in fact, it would make sense for them to match, a 44.1KHz sampling frequency can only capture signals up to 22.05KHz

basically, is 16KHz (real sound frequency) high enough to capture what you need it to (more than likely)?
if so, set your software to capture from the mic at 44.1KHz, and you're done

someone else can give you exact numbers but invest in a good cpu the most for minecraft. a fast dual core like a g3258 might be sufficient and those are dirt cheap like $60. graphics comes secondary, a 750 ti is probably good enough and those are $100. look for prebuilts with those components. maybe like $300-400 total

because wifi, already a speed downgrade from wired connection and gets worse the more stuff you put between you and the router
you can move the router closer to you, invest in wifi repeaters (google) to increase the range, or connect over lan
>>
>>57754282
rated wifi speed (such as "300mbps N") is raw, peak, and theoretical
it does not include protocol overhead (which is considerable), and is only attainable in ideal conditions (antennas very close together, with no inteference)

and rated range only means "you can connect at the lowest speed up to this distance, provided line of sight and no inteference"

if there's a wall in that 15 feet, the speed will drop considerably, that's normal

note that this is in contrast to wired ethernet, if you have a cat5e+ cable, it will do 1gbps, consistenty, up to 100m. protocol overhead is minimal, and inteference has to be pretty intense to cause any problems (and in such cases, you can opt for slightly more expensive shielded cables)

depends entirely on the quality of the plastic and metal connectors in the remaining hinge
if you want, you can try (carefully) pressing it back into shape and holding with duct tape or strong glue to give it a longer lifetime
realistically, if you're CAREFUL with your 300-800 dollar stack of delicate plastic and metal, you don't have much to worry about. it shouldn't break from normal raising the screen.

lithium ion batteries work best when they're used within a range of their total power
they do not like being completely discharged and completely charged over and over again

best thing is to charge within high ish range, like 60-80% - don't let it fall under 60, don't let it go over 80. annoying to do but keeps battery at peak for longer.

apple say that because their phones are known to run out of juice when they say they're at 20% or something, because they're badly calibrated.

laptop lifetime is more determined by how much you use it and how rough you are with it, than by how much you pay for it.
spend more than 300-400, scope out best build quality in a laptop shop (or online, read reviews), don't throw it too much, and you'll be fine

there's no go to laptop for build quality other than a thinkpad, but they're not typically built for aesthetics

How do i reseat an EVGA GTX 1060 so that it gets properly connected to the motherboard and actually works? please help :d

As in, the computer works fine without the graphics card, but when i insert it and power on the computer goes to black screen, and doesn't enter BIOs or the OS.
I have heard in other threads regarding the specific card that it might be caused by the cards size.

>>
>>57757606
Well a few things
1. At least make sure the card gets power. Try a different video card if possible.
2. Make sure your motherboard supports the card, contact your manufacturer.
3. Update your BIOS to the latest version, if possible.
4. Card could be dead. Try returning and trying another one.

I just started learning to program with Python last month. I feel like I'm doing pretty well; I've been solving some simpler programming puzzles pretty easily. I'm noticing that any solutions I look up after I'm done are significantly shorter than mine, like a one-liner fizzbuzz and the 100 doors puzzle in a few. I feel like I'm approaching it in a specific way that might be useful in larger projects, but is there a trick to figuring out these complicated, condensed solutions?

>>57757254
After looking into it more, I think I'll just go with a raspberry pi, no tablet. The Pi can do whatever the tablet can anyway. I still want to know how do I connect these things, such that the phone can get power, but also send data to the Pi.

The fan on the card is spinning, so i'm sure it gets power.
I'll look up the compatability.
I have updated the BIOs to the latest version.
I really doubt this is the case, i've kept the cable out and grounded myself, and i have heard nothing and felt no discharge. That being said, it *could* *maybe* be it.
Thank you for your help my man. Wish me luck.
>>
>>57757768
I doubt it isn't compatible, but always good to check. But my best guess is a dead card.

f takes a function and two list. Applies function g to the head of both lists, then concats the result, with the result of recursively calling the same function on the remaining list.

Recursive calls end when a list doesn't have a single element in both lists (I think).

I got raspberry pi I'm doing a silent install of NOOBs on, now on the github it says

runinstaller quiet ramdisk_size=32768 root=/dev/ram0 init=/init vt.cur_default=1 elevator=deadline silentinstall

Yep. If the package scripts didn't create it for you, you make it. Make sure apache's user (www-data. typically) has permissions on that directory. Verify the host in /etc/apache2/sites-available

nano a simple index.html with just hello world in it to make sure its working when you hit localhost.

I have never used centos before.

I do believe on cent that the package is httpd and is managed in /etc/httpd instead.

If it is not required, srsly just use ubuntu. There are a million fucking resources for ubuntu.

I'm trying to learn the basics of overclocking my CPU and GPU.

It's my understanding that you can increase the clock rate of your CPU without increasing the voltage, but this can cause instability. How/Why is it that you can increase the clock rate without increasing the voltage? Doesn't a higher clock rate (higher Hz) necessitate an increase in power consumption by default (higher voltage)? I might be missing something.

I'm also not entirely sure what the distinction is between my GPU Core Clock and Memory Clock. I can apparently overclock both, but I'm not too sure what the difference is.
>>
>>57758587
the voltage needed depends on the chip quality
no 2 chips (even of the same model) are the same
higher quality chips require lower voltage for the same results
also better start with GPU overclock as its safer, and follow step by step guides carefully for CPU OC

Thanks for the info!

I'm currently OCing my GTX980 from 1366MHz to 1450MHz (about +100MHz) and only adding +10mV. Starting small and working my way up.

So, my i7-4790K is 4.4GHz at stock, and the stock VCORE (VID) is 1.280V according to the BIOS (although CPU-Z says it's 1.283V; not sure what causes this discrepancy).

I suppose a reasonable goal would be 4.6GHz, but I'm not sure what kind of voltage I should be shooting for, given the stock voltage of 1.280V. Any idea what kind of increments would be reasonable?
>>
>>57758671
So no
>>
>>57758470
No, G is a function that takes 2 values as parameters, i.e. a->b->c. In this case, a is the first element of the first list, and b is the first element of the second list. The result c is found by applying g to both elements a and b. The overall result is a list of elements, obtains by applying g to each pair of head elements from the two list.

Think of two queues. If you pop two elements from each queue, then apply some function to them, then the result is stored in a queue.

i had a FX-8350 and a 970 chipset motherboard
the only flaw is that theres no way at all you will do any stable overclock
in fact i even disabled the autoboost clock just in case
also be careful with crappy VRMs wich some 970 motherboards have, or VRMs that require a top-down fun and will overheat if you have a sideways fan in your CPU
>>
>>57758695
just remember that a OC is worth nothing if its unstable
some people brag about huge OCs that make their PC crash after 10 mins of gaming
run at least 1 benchmark after each OC change to see if it crashes
and remember that making the vcore very high above default will drastically reduce the lifetime of the component

My computer wont boot windows it only says "repairing disk errors. This may take over an hour to complete" I let it do its thing for 14ish hours but no success. After some research I learned about the recovery drive and did that and it worked however I found out I never made a restore point. My question is, do I need to replace my HDD in order to get it working again or is there something else I can do?

so i bought some new parts for my machine during black friday. a new graphics card that installed and works fine, and another 8gb of memory. i also had a small overclock on my processor(like 100mhz or something, just barely moved the multiplier)to bring it from 4ghz to abou 4.1ghz.
for some reason, after i installed that extra 8gb of ram, when i booted up i got an error saying: overclock failed. it directed me to the bios where the OC was then disabled. i overclocked it so long ago that i honestly dont remember how i did it or if i even did it correctly.
im wondering why installing new RAM would cause this?

My computer has a strange issue. The computer will run fine until everything locks up. However it's not normal freezing. I can move my mouse around and I can even close/work programs. However I can't open any new ones and eventually the program that do work freeze until finally I can't use explorer.exe and have to restart. Could this be a hardware issue or is my windows 7 corrupted or something?
